I love UM! It is a private college that was founded in 1925 by Coral Gables developer George…read moreMerrick during Florida's prosperous land boom years. He donated the land and money with the mission of bringing a higher education institution to the growing South Florida community. The college adopted the nickname Hurricanes in memory of the devastating 1926 storm that hit the area just as the university opened. After the land boom bust the college struggled but it experienced significant growth after WWII. Their football program boosted them to national prominence leading to academic expansion. and they celebrated their 100 year anniversary last year. The University of Miami spans 240 acres on the main Coral Gables campus. It has a strong albeit expensive academic program including a medical school. Their colors are orange, green, and white representing Florida's citrus industry. The mascot is Sebastian the Ibis. The campus is park like with large trees, the man made Osceola lake from the 1940's in the center, and 1920's architecture with the oolite limestone Coral Gables is known for. I have visited the Lowe's Art Museum on campus and the Gifford Arboretum in the past and most recently I came for the Beaux arts Festival now in it's 75th year. Now could not be a better time to visit since UM is in the College Football Playoff National Championship against the Indiana Hoosiers. They have won five football championships since 1983 and we are hoping for number six. To make the famous UM hand gesture hold up your hands in front of you palms out and put your thumbs so they are touching and your hands form a U shape. UM fever has spread throughout the entire city of Miami with events happening in conjunction with the big game all weekend long. The highly anticipated game takes place Monday night. Go Canes!

To be honest with all of you Yelpers, I have not attended Florida National University. However, I…read morehave worked with them in various projects that have required their consultation in the past, which is why I am here today writing this review. First of all, I cannot stand individuals that leave crappy reviews because they're disgruntled or were fired, have this crazy expectations of a place/service/institution. So when I saw this "ex student's" review, I couldn't help but note the obvious: Is this really someone with the credibility to put down an institution running for over 30 years. An institution that has helped thousands of Hispanic Americans and Non-hispanic Americans take the next step into their lives.. improve their lives? With all due respect, "luli l", before you go bash on an educational institution, I suggest you use spell check. I have personally seen the dedication and commitment Mrs Reguerio has on improving their teaching methodologies, on opening new avenues for students to explore. Just recently FNU launched their athletic department! Students don't know this, but this costs hundreds of thousands to launch and keep up with. Why does FNU do this? Because they want to make their student's experience the college experience they want, something they can forever remember in addition from academia. I have given FNU 5 stars because I have not only worked with their team, but worked with their students. They're harnessing the mind of some brilliant individuals. So rather than basing your decision upon this not so eloquent individual, I suggest you go find out for yourself. -Jose

This is a great university, with a very good quality although there are some professors i will…read moreadvice you never accept like Bety Flores, this woman is racist, she never provides a proper feedback because she actually doesn't follow the rubic properly, today she might remove you 10 pts because you said something wrong, tomorrow she will remove 20, and after that she will removed whatever the points she wants, this is not a proper way ti qualify students, any-other professor that respect him/herself would do so, it's unethical, if would have read about this lady before I would never took the class with her, she is going to downgrade your GPA, and if you call her asking for an explanation she is going to evaluate you harder, and after that she'll say that it depends on you! Don't that speech with her, you will regret! Talk to Magaly, the best advisor ever, and tell her you just don't want her! I ended with B, gladly qnd with a lot of effort, but not because she explained anything but because i had to do all the job, technically i paid for this class to do all the job fir a teacher write on my BLACKBOARD that I should make clear that my questions weren't on any place, otherwise she will send us back to the book, what kind of teacher is she? She is supposed to make our minds clear if we don't understand, wherever the information might be she should be happy to help us, like professor Villasuso (the best ever) Finally, if you go to her videos you will see how prepotent she is and how derogatory she is towards the student! Not a good teacher at all, worst experience ever! If anyone else had similar experiences (which is most probably) i ask for you to share it, so you can avoid someone else this awfull experience in such a great university! So sad because of her working here!

I visited The Koubek Center recently for a Miami Film Festival GEMS screening…read more The center is located in a residential area so may be a little tricky to find initially. Parking is quite limited so ensure some time to find some or to carpool/ride share. We found street parking but had to walk a few blocks to get inside due to the gates being closed and only triggered to open via cars. The actual theater inside is really nice, clean and quite updated. Great screen and sound system and comfy seats. Clean facilities and kind staff. I'd definitely return to catch another film here!

NOTE: They do not rent to people anymore unless you're planning on dropping big money/ multiple day…read morerentals. However, they will pretend they do in order to judge how much money they can get. The website makes no mention of these required minimum days or minimum $. I first contacted Koubek Center many months ago to inquire about a 4 hour rental of a classroom multiple months in advance. I didn't hear back from anyone until exactly 1 month later -- someone named Bianca who started the emailing explaining they are "swamped" and responding late to emails. This was fine and I inquired again about the rental. Over a month passed and nothing again. I tried calling but the director, Melissa, was never available and Bianca either doesn't work there anymore or was on vacation, I was told. Finally, after multiple more calls and emails where I'm basically begging to give them money for a service their website claims they offer, I was directed to a man named Antonio who told me he's "about to send an invoice." Yes invoice, not estimate. He never sends it and then ignores my calls for 4 days. Finally I give up and try going in person. Note that the multiple times I visited the Koubek Center -- none of the classrooms were being used. Including this visit. It was barren. I finally meet with Melissa who laments how overworked she is and that's why she's not answering phone calls or responding to emails. She claims she was "just about to tell me" (huh?) and tell me that she is no longer allowed to rent classrooms for only the minimum 4 hours. What? After 2 months of inquiries -- and two other people telling me it's available and even pretending to "send an invoice" to my email -- I'm finally told it's impossible. Which could have easily been done in the first email response. Except the truth is they only made it impossible after seeing a 4 hour rental (for any time -- I was flexible) really wouldn't be profitable for them, so they ignored all follow-up calls and emails. Honestly, if Melissa is so unbelievably swamped and overworked she can't send a single email or respond to a single phone call in 2 months, maybe they either need to hire someone else to this position who manages their time better. Don't bother dealing either this place. This spaces aren't even very nicely kept and the administration clearly uses immature passive tactics to avoid dealing with customers. It's frankly pathetic.
