This time around I had some aji sauce to have the dish with, and fries on the side. An improvement was that the portions were actually good portions. Well, at least for the proteins. A meal could actually be visualized with this kind of portion as a whole, which is important because before I got to eat this I was getting quite a bit hangry (trust me, you do NOT want me getting hangry). I got my steak medium done, which they were. Rice was also cooked well, and the juice from the steak that got on the rice was flavorful. Onions were crisp too and a good cut. However, and this is a BIG however, even though I did get napkins in my bag as well as the Inca Cola I'd added in, there was nothing to eat anything with. No fork, no nothing. I'm sorry, is it illegal now to put eating utensils in with our delivery orders? Is assuming that they'd just give me a fork to eat my lunch with against the law now or something? Where I work doesn't always give me accessibility to be able to use eating utensils when we have lunch breaks, so I had to wait a while before even beginning to eat most of what I'd had. I was still able to eat the fries since that is usually a finger food anyway, but Lomo Saltado is definitely NOT a finger food! You need eating utensils for that, I don't care if it's delivery or not. That's like trying to eat Mac and cheese with my bare hands. See where I'm going with this? Maybe if I were to go in person things would be different for the better. As it is now though, I cannot overlook the lack of eating utensils. Ah well.

Nice crispy outside, and stuffed full on the inside. We could tell they were freshly handmade. They were clearly not frozen. The coffee is perfect. It had a robust coffee flavor. Not a bitter or burnt flavor, but a full coffee flavor, with a slight hint of cocoa. Staff is very friendly and attentive. They know all the dishes. I wasn't sure what to order. I told the waitress I was really hungry and asked what's popular. She suggested Calentado. It's a dish with eggs, rice & beans, meat, and cheese topped arepa. Meat choices are chicken, steak, ground beef, or chorizo. I tried the chicken. The waitress recommended scrambled eggs with onions and peppers. Our food came out very quickly. The plates of food were enormous. Each plate had enough food for two people. And everything was great! They have a large assortment of pastries and desserts up front. Unfortunately, I was too full to try any. They seem to be very popular in the neighborhood. While we ate, we noticed the staff joke around with people who popped in for coffee, sandwiches, or desserts. There are a lot of regulars. Tables, counters, and floors are clean. Take out refrigerators are stocked well. Popular music plays at proper levels. Loud enough that you can hear it, but not so loud that you can't hear each other. For appetizers, I ordered the Lomo Saltado Dumplings, which came with a ginger soy sauce. Each dumpling had one large chunk of beef inside. I wasn't a big fan of that...I think they would have been better with diced, more tender beef. They were fried perfectly with a nice crispy exterior. For drinks, I tried the $10 happy hr drinks, Menta Madre (pisco, fresh lime juice, passion fruit, and fresh mint), the Margarita Munay (silver tequila, orange liqueur, fresh lime juice, and rocoto pepper), and a $6 beer. These were some of the best happy hour drink prices I've seen. I also tried the El Capitán PG ($13), made with vodka, guava juice, fresh lime juice, and amaretto. Even at regular price, it was still a great value, and every drink was beautifully presented. For my entrée, I had the Seco de Carne, a beef cilantro stew served with beans, salsa criolla, and yuca. Since my iron has been low lately and I'm dealing with TMJ, the tender braised beef was much easier to chew than a steak would have been. I don't eat meat, and they immediately listened to what I was looking for and recommended the shrimp in garlic sauce. I've had this dish at a lot of Central American and Latin restaurants, and this was easily one of the richest, most flavorful versions I've ever had. My wife loves tostones, so we've had them plenty of times, and these were some of the freshest and best we've had, perfectly salted, crisp, and the plantain was cooked exactly right. Not mushy, not hard, just perfect. Their fresh juices were also incredible and absolutely worth ordering. The vibe of the restaurant is a huge part of the experience. It feels authentic, lively, and welcoming, and even the artwork inside and outside is worth stopping to see.
