This place is fantastic! Colorful decor, clean environment, friendly and remarkably quick service, even on a steady Saturday. The food is delicious, fresh, and authentic. At a very fair price too. The margs don't taste great - a step up from a spiked lime Gatorade imo - but they are strong in both flavor and effect and honestly worth the price. My friend and I split the jumbo because we didn't want to leave actually drunk. I was just passing through, but I'd love to come for happy hour next time I'm here. We have stayed at Morehead while passing through a couple of times and have been at Mi Monterrey before. We found it OK to return to. With this visit, I feel the same. It is fine, not exceptional and not bad. This time our chips were not fried in rancid oil, but the salsa leaves a lot to be desired. I feel like it is just some canned tomatoes with a little cilantro, lots of hunks of onion and not much flavor. I jazzed mine up with El Yucateco to make it a little more interesting. Ms T wanted a small meal, so just had a couple of her usual ground beef tacos and declared them fine. They let me order Huevos Rancheros for dinner even though they are listed on the lunch menu. I substituted salsa verde for the usual salsa ranchero. These were fine, the salsa verde is a little bland, needing more tomatillo for backbone and some green chile heat. As with our first experience, this is fairly average but OK Mexican. It keeps us out of the fast food places. read more

My wife and I had lunch at Mi Monterrey today, for the first time, and totally enjoyed the experience. Not a great location, in a small shopping center just off Main Street, but the restaurant was tidy, clean and well appointed, with an excellent attentive staff. The traditional start of chips and salsa was good and chips were warm and salsa pleasantly spicy. Iced tea was good and replenished often and items we ordered off the list of luncheon specials were tasty, hot and competitively priced. I had a luncheon burrito, rice, etc. and my mate had the chili relleno, which was especially spicy and good. She also had a crispy taco, which was served with abundant beef, lettuce, tomato and guacamole. Maybe the best Mexican food in Morehead, Kentucky. Recommended! read more

First of all let me start by saying I grew up eating and making authentic Mexican food. I am from Texas and I've had Mexican food in so many different states. I came in to this place because my friend recommended it. First look at the menu and I was skeptical. I order their chile rellenos and taco lunch special. I asked the waiter what kind of taco it was he mention a taco dorado. I asked for a chicken one with my chile rellenos. This food was definitely NOT Mexican at all not even Texmex. The rice was not cooked and lack seasoning, the taco was not nothing more that a Taco Bell taco and their salsa had no flavor, the chiles rellenos was not cover in egg like it supposed to be. I talked to the owner Marcos about what was going on. He was rude, disrespectful and dismissive. He told me that the food was cater to American and was not Mexican but if I was him I would just pay for it eat it and not say anything at all. He then walked off and ignored me without having an adult conversation about it. Few minutes later I called him over again and asked him how could we solve this issue and he told me in a very rude way that for this time only he wouldn't charge me for the food (even tho I didn't eat it) but not to come back and not to go to any other Mexican restaurant in the area to criticize their food and walked away. Not ones did he try to fix the problem or offer a different menu item. I have never been treated to rudely in my life. I am giving them a star for the waiter who were very attentive and nice but the owner is the complete opposite. I have no idea how this place according to the owner has been open for 10 years. If you are looking for good MEXICAN FOOD DONT COME HERE!!! You will be highly disappointed. read more

We didn't have silverware or napkins for several minutes after our food was served, and we never got the queso dip we ordered when we put in our drink order. I have literally eaten in two Mi Monterreys in two different states, and I mistakenly mixed them up in my reviews. My sincerest apologies to the Moorehead Mi Monterrey. The food was good, and we had a small child with us who needed much attention from her mom, and the staff was very supportive of her needs. Our lunch there was a respite from a long drive after our view of the eclipse in August. Oddly, we ate at the next Mi Monterrey within a few days of this one. I was taking my son back to college we decided to try this place since we were told it was pretty good. It was a little hard to find because the signage was very plain. But I had a general idea where it was, and I found it fairly easily. They were very few patrons when we were there, but it was still early in the evening. We were seated, and drinks ordered. They brought chips and salsa very quickly. The salsa is decent, and if I salted it the salsa was actually, better than most places. I placed an order of enchiladas with rice and beans. My son ordered grilled chicken with cheese sauce and rice only. Within five minutes we had our entrées. The beans were pretty tasty but salt made them better. The rice was bland but again salt saved the day. I was disappointed in the enchiladas. The bean enchilada was fine but the beef was not very tasty and the cheese enchilada was not melted. There was very little enchilada sauce which was better because it wasn't very good. There are too many Mexican restaurants out there today that I probably will kothis one another chance. read more

I ordered a STREET TACO PLATE which they said they had. They said yes and Al pastor was available. I got home and the tacos looked just like Taco Bell BEEF tacos. Cute little Mexican place tucked away in Morehead. Menu is filled with typical Tex-Mex entrees. It is SUPER CHEAP! Salsa was decent- not the typical tomato water I've found elsewhere in Kentucky. Could be spicier or have a spicy option. I had the chicken fajitas for lunch which were good. Churros for dessert were excellent! This place used to be good but really going down hill fast. Been eating here for years and getting pretty bad. Definitely the worst Mexican restaurant in the area now. I was there a few days ago and was served left over shrimp from the day before for my shrimp fajita. The tampico was disgusting. It was watered down and hardy any meat or cheese...yuk!! We have 3.2 Mexican restaurants in this town that I'm aware of (I'm not sure exactly how to count Taco Bell), and Mi Monterrey is possibly the most complicated to review for me. The food is good, but pricing is very noncompetitive with La Finca and Don Señor when comparing similar meals, and that ushers in a confusing drawback for me. The communication factor is admittedly higher than the other two direct competitors, and that earns it some solid points, so if that's on your concern list, maybe Mi Monterrey is your preferred next stop. In effort of keeping these reviews non-biased, I tried the same dish from all three major restaurants, and complicatedly enough, they each had their own strong points. Don Señor pulled in the best entrees, La Finca had the best veggies, and Mi Monterrey has the best sides. read more

Good food, we were passing through via I64 and like to try local places on Yelp. Salsa needed a bit more heat so we added some of the hot sauce on the table. I had the beef fajitas and my BF had a burrito combo. I prefer more flavorful rice, it was good. To illustrate just how good this Mexican restaurant is, this will be my first Yelp review. Now... where to begin... My girlfriend HATES refried beans. Calls them "mooshy-beans". After seeing my reaction, she wanted a bite. She smiled, looked at me and said "Ok. Maybe I like mooshy-beans!", and I had to physically restrain her from finishing mine. Anecdote over. Let's get to it. I am 46, former Marine, and have eaten in Mexican restaurants all over the country, including southern California, and this, with absolutely ZERO doubt, is the best ever. We ordered take-out there from their giant menu. I got the Fajita Mi Monterrey (grilled chicken, pork chunks so big you have to tear them apart and SO tender, chorizo and grilled shrimp, grilled bell pepper, mushroom, onion and tomato, served with beans, rice, lettuce, guacamole, sour cream and tortillas). $12.95. COMPLETELY under priced. It wasn't hot-spicy, but rather perfectly spicy and so flavorful from bite to swallow. I could taste every single different flavor. My only complaint was there were not enough tortillas due to the giant portion of filling (I'm a big boy, but there was enough for two full servings, even for me), but I'm sure that would have been remedied had we dined in. She had the fajita quesadilla, and was apprehensive due to past experiences with other places. She was stunned by the big chunks of the grilled chicken and grilled veggies (especially the tomatoes), which were exceptionally juicy, but not greasy, and so full of flavor. The service. Although we carried out, the service was still tops. The server took our order and described the dishes, even pointing out a better option of quesadilla that matched what she wanted. Very friendly and fast. Now, here's what makes this place a 6-star. The food is all heat-seasoned low, and for good reason: you can always add heat but you can't take it out once it is added. When the server returned with our food, I asked for two small cups to try the two hot sauces they have on the table (I have maybe 14 different brands in my kitchen because I do love me some hot sawse). He suggested their house-made hot sauce, and dang if that wasn't an epic suggestion. There are so many tiny ingredients in this thick and sweat-inducing sauce, making it the very best hot (and I mean HOT. Try some on your fingertip before going crazy) sauce I have ever enjoyed. A TON of back-end heat and so full of flavor. The salsa is very bland, so if you want your flavor to go to eleven, try mixing a bit of their hot sauce to find your perfect dip. Although cheaper that most restaurants, the food taste as much as it cost. The rice was dry and practically flavorless. The chimichangas were ok but much smaller than typical joints. Mi Monterrey has a pretty traditional Mexican - American menu that really doesn't differ that much from the other local Mexican restaurant. However, Mi Monterrey is our new favorite because of the cleanliness, quality service, and twist on some traditional recipes. 1. The restaurant has two sides: a "bar side" with lots of seating and a full bar --- this side is a little more conspicuous and less private --- it's great for large gatherings! I usually prefer the other side that has booths, one tv in which the staff will allow you to turn down the volume so you can hear your conversation with your guest. The quiet side is also beautifully decorated with a Southwest - American mural that wraps the perimeter of the walls. The tables, chairs, and floors are always clean, and I never feel "greasy" in there. 2. The staff are GREAT! They get to know you very quickly and provide you very special service with a smile. You can tell by their dress, manners, and treatment of the guests that they value your business and want you to return --- many times! 3. Like I said, the food is pretty typical, but they do have some "twists" on old recipes that I really enjoy. First, they have THE BEST salsa in town ---- always fresshly made with lots of cilantro! Yum! They have the best cheesy - nacho dip that I think they add a sprinkle of cumin because its very hearty in flavor. As for entrees, I'm very partial to their Beef Nacho Fajita Burrito and the El Sancho --- the latter is STUFFED with shrimp and sauteed mushrooms. Really a delight. They don't have draft beer, which is okay by me --- but they do have a good selection of Mexican makes: El Pacifico, Dos Equis, and of course Corona and reasonably priced. We are frequent visitors (usually once a week) and we always recommend Mi Monterrey to our friends. read more

Hands down my favorite restaurant in town. I'm a sucker for Mexican food, and cheap food at that. At Mi Monterrey I get the best of both worlds. The lunch menu is really great, has a decent variety, and gives you really nice portions without giving you that overfull feeling (unless you fill up on chips) the best meal in my opinion is the pollo bandido; grilled chicken tips in queso with rice and beans. Simple and delicious. I highly recommend the guacamole as well, it costs 2.99 for a little bowl which is a bummer but I can't resist getting it anytime I eat here. The wait time here is the best part, as it takes about half a basket of chips and salsa for your food to get out to you, I seriously don't know how they do it i mean i've honestly had longer wait times at taco bell than this. Drawbacks: the waiters seem to cover more tables than most places, so although you get your food lightning quick, when it gets busy it may take a while to get a refill on your drinks or salsa,but they are the friendliest bunch of guys. I also wish they'd turn the volume up on the tvs during ball games, so I can hear the commentary instead of mariachi music. I consider myself a lover of mexican-american cuisine (come on, we all know they don't eat enchiladas and nachos in mexico city) and i've tried quite a few mexican places in the region, such as el camino real in mount sterling, tres hermanos in ashland and grayson, and la finca and don senor here in morehead, and I can honestly say that while those all have their pros (the salsa at tres hermanos is way better, and la fincas has a better atmosphere) this little place in the plaza beats them all in terms of general food and value.
