The CHICKEN pasteles that should be renamed POTATO with CHICKEN... 3 tiny pasteles for $11... not worth it.
E H.

The sign for the pupusas special got me and I also decided to try the chicken pasteles. The pupusas were good but had a bitter taste that was off putting. The curtido was lacking oregano and more time curing on the vinegar. The chicken pasteles were more potato than chicken. I don't understand why they call them CHICKEN pasteles if they got more potato than chicken. So misleading! And 3 pasteles (very small) for $11 is not a bargain. At least should have ALL chicken or just rename them to POTATO WITH CHICKEN. It was not the best food so I don't plan on going back...The taste from the pasteles was burned, old oil, not fresh, not flavorful. I'be given up on looking for pasteles in LA!

Great food and service to start this review . My wife is Salvadoran so she introduce me to this delicious food and culture . I recommend this restaurant to anyone that's around the Valley . Craving popusas or salvi food hit up this place . Buen provecho

Wow I'm disgusted and at a loss of words!!!! If I could give this place a -star I would!!!!! I came to dine in with my fiancé and found this in our curtido! When we told the lady she walked away and left us hanging finally when she decided to handle the situation she offers us a DISCOUNT!!!!!! Can you believe that!!!! A discount? Like what? When I told her I wasn't paying for it she gave me the worst look possible! Walked away and left us hanging again!!! We went up to the register and asked one of the other workers if there was a manager and she said no with an attitude... all while this was happening the servers where in the back laughing!!!! Idk how and why there's an A in front of the store I've never seen a restaurant with an A grade have COCKROACHES in their food! never returning there again! !

I have spent almost half my life in the kitchen cooking professionally. I have read the reviews and there seems to be a lot of concern over how long the food takes. If you want fast Mexican / Latino food you always have Chipotle, Baja Fresh or Taco Bell. You won't have to wait at all plus they come gift wrapped. If you want good food that is cooked to order (which explains the wait), then come here. I have never had fried Tamales but will be back for them soon. So for those of you who like hole in the wall mom-and-pop places, this is worth a trip.

We've been coming to Mi Carbonero for years! It's our go-to spot for all things Salvi food. Bottom line, the food is good, the place is clean, & everyone is super friendly. I did notice that their prices went up a bit, but I guess that's the case everywhere. They used to have a deal on Thursdays for discounted pupusas (not sure if this is still the case). With all that said, they are a bit slow in service. I placed a phone order in which I was told 20 minutes. I came in at 20 minutes, but still had to wait an additional 15 minutes to get my order, despite the place not being super busy. They did check in with me periodically, however - which I appreciate. And, they do have a sign indicating that service is slow. So, you have been warned.

It's a solid little Salvi place. There wasn't any single item that was shockingly good but they did everything well. The pupusas, curtido and horchata were delicious, the service was friendly and the prices were low. The thing that really made them stand out was the air conditioner. This thing was more nuclear powered wind machine than ceiling mounted air conditioner and on a hot day that's sometimes all you need. So if you go in on a hot summer day and the place seems packed with people just sitting.... and lingering,........ leaning a little bit, ..........not really looking at anything.....now you know why. Enjoy. 2013 #115 / 365

It was my aunts birthday and she wanted to come here for some pupusas. She told me that they were really good and not greasy. We ordered two pupusas each but I had a tamale and coffee. The pupusas were on the small side to me but I guess each person makes them a different size. What I did like a lot was the fact that it was not really greasy like the place down the street on Lankershim, lol.

My friend and I were looking for a spot for lunch yesterday and we came across El Carbonero. To be perfectly honest, we were actually going to check out Manna - which is in the same plaza - because I had major hummus cravings but they were closed. Good thing. Salvadorian food is so much more than pupusas and there are some El Salvardorian restaurants throughout the valley and beyond, but I think people mostly associate their food with those deliciously fried and cheesy treats. I don't blame them - they're great. El Carbonero has traditional and typical Salvadorian dishes spanning breakfast, beef, chicken, mariscos (seafood), and antojitos (small bites). The friend that I was with is Salvadorian, so she was my guide on the menu for certain things that I wasn't familiar with, like pacaya. Pacaya is a pickled palm flower and they serve it stuffed with cheese, battered, fried and covered in a tomato and bell pepper sauce. It was served with rice, beans and a salad. It was really delicious. The pacaya has a slightly tangy taste and it's texture is similar to a cruciferous vegetable. Nice crisp bite. I enjoyed it. We also shared a pupusa because you have to order at least one. It was a cheese and loroco pupusa. I've eaten many of these in my life and what I really liked about this one is that they weren't greasy. Try El Carbonero if you're looking for something more traditional.

I have eaten food from here twice now and both times have been phenomenal!…read more The first time, my boyfriend and I made a larger take-out order of just pupusas to bring to a Friendsgiving. This time, I ordered two pupusas and then their pastelitos. Pasteles de res. First things first- the restaurant is easy to find and parking isn't too bad! There are some spots in the back, but I've found street parking easily both times I've gone. Inside, the restaurant is decorated with all sorts of nods to El Salvador, including a super iconic soccer jersey and even some Salvi beers. The workers were all friendly and accommodating. The food is GREAT!! The pupusas are good. Cortido is awesome. I really liked the pasteles, even though I've only had handmade before, so I was skeptical, but they were so good, I devoured way more than I meant to!! I really did mean to have leftovers from my order, but I only have one remaining pastele- they come with three to an order. I will continue ordering from here and hopefully I'll have a chance to eat at the restaurant next time! So good!

The cheese on the pupusas was a bit salty for me but everything else was amazing. Go with ALOT of patience as they do take a bit to bring out the food. Service was a bit slow, I think they should hire another server. The place is cute! It was good for our big group. We were still able to talk and laugh. There's some parking in the back but it's scarce. Street parking is tough. That would be my only negative point about this place! Perk, they sell beer and alcohol!

The pastelitos were tiny, and to make matters worse, I found myself chewing on something purple it looked like a piece of fabric or a rag. Absolutely disgusting. After the fact, I saw that other people have reported getting food poisoning from this place, which is really concerning. The pupusas were also jammed into a small container, making them messy and unappetizing. I only ordered from here because it was nearby, but I definitely won't be coming back.
