    Chocolate Cake

We recently tried Mezcal for a family dinner. I ordered the enchilada suiza with camarones and was really looking forward to it, especially since I was hungry, but it didn't quite hit the mark for me. The sauce leaned much sweeter than expected, which threw off the balance of the dish. My husband had the grilled pulpo salad and was ok with it. And to end on a good note, the churros and chocolate cake definitely made up for it, they were warm, satisfying, and a great way to finish the meal. Overall, a mixed experience, but I'd be open to trying other dishes next time.

Chicken mole Enchiladas ( Red Mole)

This is an Oaxacan style restaurant, meaning if you're used to Mexican food being taqueria style burritos, you won't find that here. My husband and I decided to share an order of their red mole chicken enchiladas. They also had a kids menu available, so we ordered the kids steak and cheese quesadilla with fries and a kids chicken taquitos with rice and beans. For the style of food this was, I think everything was up to par and had good flavors. The style is not really my preference though, so I don't think I'll be back. The enchiladas were simply plain corn tortillas with the red sauce poured on top with a couple pieces of chicken stacked on top, so you eat the chicken separately. The chicken was a bit on the dry side, luckily you have the mole sauce to dip it into which masks the dryness. Similarly, the chicken taquitos only had chicken on the inside - no cheese, no other sauce or anything, so they were also kind of dry to eat. The beans they give you are black beans but they're served at room temp and I think they would have been better hot. The steak quesadilla was the star of the meal - you get a pretty big portion size, relatively speaking, and there is a good ratio of meat and cheese inside. The staff was nice and the restaurant inside is beautifully decorated. Conveniently located a block away from downtown San Jose.

We were excited to try this restaurant. Sadly our experience was underwhelming. Service was a miss. Our server was all over the place except for our table. Being that the restaurant is called mezcal, we ordered mezcal cocktails. They were water downed and barely had any mezcal. The guacamole was $13 and came in a huge molcajete. The amount of guacamole did not fill the bowl. I ordered their specialty mole negro which came with chicken. The portion was so small and not worth $26. The flavor of the mole was mild and light. Not what I expected a dark mole would be. Better value were the enchiladas con coloradito ($21 with added chicken) and la torta ($17).

Came by for dinner the other night and it was a lacklustre experience. Same-day reservations were available and our table was ready upon arrival. Dining is available inside the dining room or on their covered patio. There is a bar on-site with a full alcohol license. Our waiter was very attentive in suggesting and recommending beverages throughout the evening. Started off with the guacamole and it was freshly made and served in a gigantic bowl. It was decent. Opted for a carne asada quesadilla for my main and it was edible. The carne asada was rather bland and dry. The entire quesadilla was lacklustre. I noticed my dining companions being surprised with their dishes as it wasn't what they expected. Towards the end of the meal, I noticed many still had plenty of food left on their plate.

What a lovely surprise! Staying downtown San Jose, we felt like Mexican! After scrolling for a bit I found Mezcal! Around 2:30pm we arrived and at first glance, I was thinking is this place open? Yes it was! We walked in and we were greeted promptly and we were told we could sit anywhere. We sat in the main dining area under the beautiful tree - as the outside area was being set up for an event. After being sat they quickly served water and fresh house-made corn chips and salsa. We then order: Guacamole Margarita Tacos de asada Mole negros with chicken Loved everything we ate! Was Delicious! Will be back again!

Well, I tried to be optimistic, Mezcal was honestly pretty disappointing. the beef was thin and dry. But luckily, the server recommended that I try a combination of the meats, and the pork was pretty decent as, was the chorizo. I've never had Oaxacan food before, so I don't have anything to compare this to. But I would not go here again if given the choice.

Stopped here on a work trip. I had the Salmon. Great cook and portion size. Could have used a touch more salt but great flavors. The staff was very friendly. Nice interior with a handful of tables. I think there was an outside patio too. Full bar. Closer to 4.25 stars. Check it out.

I'm rarely in San Jose but this is always a must, the inside is amazing, the decorations are fun and exciting. The food to match, I order a few things but for a first time the carne asada tacos are a good bet! We got in late this last time I was by and they still let us in and even order dessert, even though it was cutting it close. Got the oaxacan coffee for dessert and that was incredible

Mole Negro - Veggie Enchiladas Salmon
    Shirin B.

Came here for a birthday dinner and had a pretty standard meal. We ordered the salmon which had a lemon cream sauce and came with rice and veggies and we got the veggie enchiladas with a dark and smoky mole sauce. The salmon was cooked well and so were the veggies but the sauce they had was okay. The mole was delicious and the enchiladas weren't super heavy so anyone who's a fan of smoky flavors should order the dark mole and maybe an old fashioned made with their Mezcal! It was my friends birthday so the waiter brought out the dessert we ordered (the pecan ice cream wasn't great) but the brownie sundae was awesome.

    La Torta

This is such a cool aesthetically appealing restaurant. It is relatively large inside with additional seating in a covered patio type space. I came on a Tuesday night and this place was bustling. The service was quick, though our server wasn't particularly personable, he was attentive. I thoroughly enjoyed the food, especially the Mexican coffee. I never see that beverage out here and it was so tasty and strong (both in caffeine and alcohol). My friend got the torta, but he didn't care for it. I tried it and I liked it though it wasn't like any torta I've had before. It was more like a chicken salad sandwich but I liked it.

    Me enjoying wine.

Lots of take out orders and dine in orders. I ordered 5 super tacos to share with different meats (pollo, carne asada, al pastor, carnitas and chorizo). The super tacos come with cilantro, onions, avocado, sour cream, cheese and pico de gallo. All the tacos come with homemade corn tortillas - you could tell they were fresh. The tacos are big, not small at all. The carne asada, carnitas and pollo was my favorite. Al pastor was good as well, chorizo was not that flavorful for me. However, they also have 3 types of salsas (green, red and a creamy orange) you can use to help add some more flavor if needed. I plan to come back here to try their burritos and tortas as well next time.

The tacos were good and the tortilla they used was quite thick. The enchiladas had good flavor as well, and I would be interested in trying their enchilada with the verde sauce next time. Their prices have steadily risen over time and they have updated their menu prices as well. One thing that elevated this restaurant to 4 stars is their sauce! The red sauce and green sauce recipe is definitely unique compared to other taquerias. The red sauce bottle helps with the flavor tremendously and without it I would have rated this place lower.

We were seated at the booth in the back, which I have always admired, but I now realize it has its disadvantages. It is right by the bathroom, which got a bit of traffic on our visit. That's not such a big deal. The bigger concerns I have are: (1) there is no cushioning for those of us with little of our own and (2) you have to sit up fairly straight and if you want to lean against the wall, you're likely to rub shoulders with the wall hanging. Next time I will ask to be seated someplace else as there were two 2-tops outside. The food is always made from quality ingredients and I'm glad to see they are experimenting with pricing and quantity. I did not see mention of their daily happy hour, which was a feature of last year's visit so that may be gone. However, they now have a five tacos platter which offers relatively good value from the menu prices. This would be good for sharing for two people I think. But that is not what we ordered on this visit. My wife ordered two vegetarian (verduras) tacos and the Blood Orange/Jalapeno mocktail. I ordered the huevos rancheros. Unlike Luna, tortilla chips and salsa are not complimentary. So we let our appetites build. Our food arrived fairly quickly, so that was good and we dug in. My wife had ordered two extra eggs (extra charge) to accompany her tacos, and I think she was glad she did. The vegetarian tacos were not terribly generous for the price. My huevos rancheros came in a neatly stacked pile. My wife thought to ask if they had a hot sauce and they do! So we requested their hottest version. It was a welcome addition to the meal (gratis). A little vinegary, but plenty of heat. The mocktail was quite good. Like Spindrift and some other sparkling waters, it is not sweetened, but it had a good amount of strained blood orange juice, and you could taste the fresh jalapeño. I wonder if they have tried adding mint to this as I think it would be welcome. Maybe next time I will ask if they can experiment with me by adding some mint.

Once we were served we were never checked up on until the end when we had to flag them down to get the check. I don't think we'll be coming back.

I ended up choosing chilaquiles with a bandera sauce and carne asada as the added protein. The rest of the table got all different types of dishes from carne en su jugo to birria to omelettes. While we enjoyed each other's company sipping on our cafecito I enjoyed the ambiance of the space. Nicely decorated for the holidays. Since it was opening time it wasn't as loud as I imagine it can get in there. The sun did shine on the faces of those facing the windows which was not enjoyable for them. There was no way to cover the sun either since it was coming in from the top windows with no shade. My food came out along with the rest of the plates and we went right in to enjoy them. My favorite chilaquiles was covered in the white sauce. The red and green were good but the white sauce was my favorite. The carne was cooked well but I could taste it wasn't marinated or lacked flavor. I didn't get a knife to cut the meat so it was very difficult to enjoy a piece with my chilaquiles. It was hard to cut with a butter knife. I thought it would be a piece of steak but it was a piece of carne asada. Eggs were scrambled and cooked well. The whole plate was filling, had flavor, and was a good portion. The cafe de olla had a good flavor but a tad sweet for my preference. The space in here is a vibe. A fun place to enjoy large gatherings. I came for breakfast but will update when I come back to visit for dinner. Bathrooms are clean. Staff was welcoming and efficient in taking care of our group. Hospitality was a 10/10. Parking in the am was a breeze but at prime time I can see it being a complete nightmare so plan accordingly. I enjoyed my visit and will come back to check out the dinner menu.

As we cruised by looking for parking, it was clear we had picked a lively spot--buzzing energy everywhere: inside, outside, and even upstairs. We were quickly seated indoors, though on such a beautiful day we assumed we'd be offered outdoor seating. No big deal--we asked, and they happily moved us to a shaded table with plenty of space. Much better. Drinks were first on the agenda: margaritas and a michelada, all refreshing and exactly what we were hoping for. Our server, Michelle, was friendly, attentive, and even shared some helpful tips about perks with our American Express Platinum Card--a nice, unexpected touch. We kicked things off with queso fundido, though a brief mix-up brought us chips and guacamole from another table first. Once we pointed it out, it was quickly handled--but honestly, it looked so good we ended up ordering it anyway. No regrets there--it definitely hit the spot. We hadn't planned on a full dinner, so we went with lighter bites. The tuna tostadas and halibut ceviche were a hit--fresh, flavorful, and perfect for sharing. I went with the tortilla soup, which was good and nicely presented... but didn't quite wow me. I've been on a bit of a tortilla soup tour lately, and this one leaned a little heavy on the tortillas (soaking up too much broth) and had more zucchini than I expected. That said, major points for serving it piping hot--something a lot of places miss--and the avocado was a great addition. One thing worth noting: I didn't catch it until later, but there's a 4% living wage surcharge added to the bill--and it's taxed. That caught me off guard, and I'm still not entirely sure how that works in California. Overall, a fun, energetic spot with great drinks, tasty bites, and solid service. Not perfect, but definitely good enough to come back for another round.

I ordered the steak salad, which is what I've had every time I've dined at the Pruneyard location. It was very good, although the steak portion was teeny tiny. That was disappointing. But the greens were fresh and delicious and I loved the fresh avocado and roasted corn on top. Even the salad dressing was perfection. A few random notes: My waiter was running around like crazy trying to help all of the diners at his tables, but still came by and checked on me a couple times. The restaurant is LOUD despite being outside. They allow dogs on leashes outside. The dedicated parking lot is small, but I was able to find a spot. The meat was perfectly cooked, moist and No Chunks of fat at all, and there was plenty of meat as well, mixed with a perfect bit of rice & beans, cheese, a tiny bit of avocado (I always have extra at home for this + sour cream) and the dough is pleasantly thin. I throw this in a counter top oven, and while heating, the dough becomes wonderfully crisp... Ohlala. Staff was quick to take our orders and clean up. Corn tortillas are used for the tacos. The ingredient description for food options is concise and also descriptive to let people know what to expect. They serve soft, regular, and crispy tortillas at this chain. The carne asada was on the drier side when I had it this time. Definitely had juicier meats here in the past. The tortilla was a little crispier than I remember for the regular tacos. Will be back at this location or at the others since it's one of the popular choices in SJ!
