My parents used to bring my sister and I to Meyer Dairy when we were kids. We revisited a few weeks ago and it was exactly the same as I remembered. This review is purely about the Ice Cream. I haven't sampled anything else from Meyer Dairy so I can't comment. The draw of this place is obviously that they make their own ice cream using their own fresh milk. That doesn't necessarily mean they make good ice cream, just that's it's fresh. I found the taste to be a bit lacking and the flavors muted. The servings are gigantic and for under $3 I got two massive scoops in a cone which is a great deal. I tried the butter crunch and there wasn't a distinctive taste or anything crunch, perhaps I just got a bad sample. On the actual cone I got the chocolate peanut butter which didn't particularly taste like either and I also get the peanut butter oreo flavor which I really liked. The peanut butter was very soft and creamy however the oreo was harder and somewhat icy. Overall I liked what I got and would go back, but it's not the best ice cream I've had. read more

Meyer Dairy Store has that old dairy store feel, and is a great place to stop with the family for a treat. They still use the old glass milk jugs that can be brought back in for a deposit. The ice cream has that fresh homemade taste, and there are many flavors to choose from. You can enjoy your cone inside in the dining area or you can take it outside, and eat it at the many picnic tables that overlook the Meyer family farm. This is a really great place to support. Until I started getting milk here, I honestly didn't know that any milk ever tastes better than other milk. This does, though. It's so fresh it actually tastes GOOD. I also love that their glass bottles are reusable- less waste! If you're wondering how fresh the milk is, just stand in the parking lot and wait for the wind to shift. At some point you'll be able to smell the cows. The milk end of this business is without doubt five stars. The ice cream, less so. I think it really lacks flavor. Service is less than ideal, too. I used to like to get a triple chocolate shake (chocolate milk, chocolate ice cream, chocolate syrup), but it must be annoying to make because whenever I've ordered it the staff behind the counter acted irritated and loudly tried to pawn my order off on each other- while I was standing there. Sure doesn't make me feel too comfortable. So I don't do the ice cream side anymore. But I only buy milk elsewhere in a real emergency. It's worth the trip, I swear. read more

On our way back from our Memorial Day road trip, was stopped by the Penn State Creamery which was closed on Memorial Day so we decided to give this place a try. It was not as expensive and they gave you more ice cream. I got the mocho chip ice cream which was ok, it seemed like it was a bad batch cuz it either wasn't frozen correctly or melted and refrozen since it wasn't as smooth, kinda crystallized. I will, however, review their milk. It's delicious: fresh, obviously local--hello, cows outside the store!, and inexpensive. Served in glass bottles for you to take home. If you return (recycle) the bottle, you get an immediate discount on your next bottle/gallon. Try local, fresh milk--you won't think twice about making the extra stop after grocery shopping. Can only speak for their ice cream, but it is awesome! Waaaay better than the PSU Creamery. I had the chocolate marshmallow, girlfriend had the grapenut (I know I know, wtf, but it was really delicious!). Meyer's Dairy is a national treasure, or at least a State College treasure, yet largely unknown to many of the residents. Every PSU student knows the Penn State Creamery and will wait an hour for ice cream there, but Meyer's is in many ways better, and much cheaper, and rarely has more than a ten minute line. Their wet walnut sundaes are my favorite. I also love to pick up a half gallon of milk in their traditional old-world returnable glass bottles. Look out over the back deck and you can see the cows that produced the milk grazing in the lush green fields, and their bottling plant is just behind the ice cream bar; it doesn't get any fresher than this. read more

Meyer Dairy is such a fun place to go to get ice cream. To me, going here is about it being a warm night and wanting to go to a dairy for ice cream. That said, the ice cream is just okay. Sure, it's refreshing and it tastes just fine but it's not the highest quality ice cream you'll ever have. It's a bit gritty. Like you can taste the ice crystals. Maybe it's because of the fat content or the air it's exposed to when they make it. I don't know much about ice cream making but I do know that that grittiness is the flaw in this ice cream. Meyer Dairy has it all. Pure, local, fresh ingredients make for superior product and Meyer's is proof of this. Their milk is delicious, hormone free and affordable (if you return the empty glass bottles - eco friendly!) and their ice cream is fabulous. A wide selection of flavors and ice cream treats - like my personal favorite - the chocolate malt. At Christmas time you must get your egg nog from Meyer's - also way better than anything offered by a chain grocery store. In addition to the more obvious items, Meyer's offers a simple menu of sandwiches and other luncheonette type items at ridiculously reasonable prices. All this offered in a family-run nostalgic atmosphere - ye olde milk delivery wagon included! I've had ice cream in a lot of places across PA and around the country. I love Meyer Dairy's milk and cream--really, it's the best quality you can find easily in this area without seeking out some private person and buying direct. The milk has such great flavor and is sold in glass bottles that are just as cute as can be. I love their milk! The cream is so thick, it often has to be spooned out. YUM. I'm not a huge fan of their ice cream however. I think it tastes too milky and doesn't have that rich, silky mouthfeel that I want in my ice cream. It's OK, but I wouldn't cross the street for it--I'd rather buy their cream and make my own at home. As for the other products, they are OK. Cheese is just cheese, ditto eggs, etc. Nothing that blows me away, and I'm not a whoopie pie fan because shortening kind of freaks me out. (Sorry, Pennsylvania.) Worth going for the milk! read more

I have eaten ice cream at Myers Dairy for years, however, I will not be back. During a visit last week, I discovered that the are now using carrageenan as a natural ingredient. I personally don't want seaweed in my ice cream. "Carrageenan causes inflammation, which can lead to ulcerations and bleeding," No thanks...I will stick to my Turkey Hill All Natural ice cream that doesn't use any crap that shouldn't be in ice cream. read more

As a State College local, I grew up with Meyer's Dairy, and it's still what I dream of when I think about ice cream. Everyone from SC knows that Meyer's is better than the creamery, although it's a little-known gem. My favorite thing here by far is the chocolate milk, which is the richest, most delicious thing in the world. When I come home once a year, that's the one thing I have to have while I'm in SC. Also note that in general, I don't even like milk. Also, the milkshakes are creamy rich perfection, and are in my top three milkshakes I've ever had. Plus, they have Teaberry here, which is an awesome flavor that you can't find in a lot of places! Also, they have really cute picnic tables outside, and a nice old-timey vibe inside. Fantastic ice cream right on the road from Penns Valley to State College. Milk so fresh you can tasted it in the ice cream. I ordered a sugar cone with a scoop of maple walnut and a scoop of chocolate chip brownie and it was like a gigantic sunday by the time they were done. Just had 'WhiteHouse' ice cream for the first time. Yum!! Vanilla ice cream with maraschino cherries. (However, nearly all maraschino cherries sold in the U.S. are now manufactured with a red food coloring. I love that the store offers more than its (delicious) dairy products, including a wide range of deli selections and items from other local businesses. The food gets 5 stars. The service gets -1. The ice cream is always good. I've tried a lot of flavors. The coconut chip and plain chocolate are favorites. For a good price, you get a generous scoop. The atmosphere is nice. The seating inside has a nice country feel and the picnic tables outside are in the shade which is nice on a hot day. Oh, and the farm is in the back :-) The service is awful sometimes. The counter is usually staffed by high school students that have an attitude with you. The only thing from receiving 5 stars is the fact that they are CASH or CHECK ONLY! Really? Are you kidding me? in 2013 ? NO Credit Card is allowed to be used here?! So I always have to make sure that I have enough cash for all the purchase I want. I love their milk... it really taste pretty good and extremely fresh. I ADORE their "Whitehouse" flavored ice cream which is a cherry and vanilla flavor mix.. The Whoppie Pie ( Chocolate with Vanilla Cream ) is my favorite. During the Thanksgiving season, I tried their Pumpkin and Cream Cheese Whoppie Pie- It was good but not nearly as good as the Chocolate Vanilla Cream Whoppie Pie.
