The signage/menu could be better &/or more clear. There is froyo happening all over & then you see in smaller letters that they have smoothie bowls. So the smoothie bowl is pretty good but I will say you're paying more for granola than actual smoothie. It basically goes granola in the bowl, then smoothie, & then more granola w/ the cut up fruit of your choosing. Too much granola & the raisins are hard (unless something else) so you can chip a tooth trying to bite it. So let's just say for those of you white folks who don't know or understand how racism works, read a book. I highly recommend the smoothie bowl. It says it's a smaller version of the acai bowl, but is still a very generous portion. Yogurt Express is such a hidden gem in Happy Valley. I'm consistently shocked each time a townie or Penn State student or alum tells me that they don't know about it. As a PSU alum who lived in an apartment on that end of town, my group of my friends and I would always hang out late at night after full days of classes, IM sports, and THON meetings. Or we would have to pull all nighters for projects papers or exams and it was hard to find a good study spot. Apartment? Lovely bed to sleep in that is too warm and tempting. And often to full of fun to focus or too decaffeinated to stay up late. Library? Too far and bus schedule only goes so late and a girl shouldn't be walking back home by herself in the dark. Hub? No late night food. McDonalds? Greasy and fueling a corporate machine. Other places that end of town? Closed too early, or poorly lit, sketchy and no seating. Penn State student and townie alike, meet Steve. Steve, the owner is everything wonderful about a local small business owner. He is there each day serving you- friendly, innovative, willing to accommodate and knows his stuff. And even though it had been two years since either of us had been in, he remembered what my alum friend and I (who were regulars) liked to order. I asked if there were gluten free, dairy free, and sugar free options on the menu. (Usually the answer at fro yo or ice cream places is no. Or yes, but my sister Jess is stuck with only one or two unappetizing options.) Even after the high filter that her health restrictions creates, there were still endless options for her to choose from! We were both on cloud 9. And it just got better. One of the most exciting discoveries, YOU CAN GET CREAMERY ICE CREAM THERE! And not only that but... *drumroll please* ... YOU CAN MIX FLAVORS! I. Was. Incredulous. Elated! What a find. Jess and I both ended up landing on a creamery ice cream selection. Two creamery flavors for Jess, thank you very much! And a small bowl of Apple Cobbler Crunch for me. Steve asked if I wanted toppings and I asked if he had any that would match that. He suggested crushed graham crackers. I told him to to go with what he knows matches well and he did not disappoint. I didn't think it was possible for creamery ice cream to ever taste yummier than how I experienced it growing up in a family of Penn Staters- eaten with a spoon straight out of the gallon, around a table outside the creamery on a warm summer day, but boy was I wrong! Discriminatory and hostile me and my girl wanted to try out yogurt express downtown next to envy. And from the moment we got in we're profiled. We both talking in Spanish while he was with a customer. Once he was done we approach to order he yelled at for not following the sign to go around the line yet no one else is in line. Once we do he then lecture about listen to the instruction. At that point i was done but my girl gave him a chance and wanted to eat still. She looked at the board to decide what she wants. He then comments again " are you going to order or not" and that when we both just walked out. That kind of hostile to me and my girl especially is not something we should have in our community. read more

Do not waste your time or money at this place. If you're looking for frozen yogurt, you're better off going to Kiwi where you can actually make it yourself and have a variety of frozen yogurt flavors. About a half hour ago I went in here planning on buying a smoothie. I walked in the store and began looking at the board to plan what I wanted in my smoothie. When I finished I noticed the owner in the back corner slicing strawberries. I figured he hadn't greeted me since he had a few more strawberries he wanted to get through and that he would walk over in a few seconds when he finished. Now, looking back this would have been a much less awkward experience for me if the man would have just greeted me when I walked in instead of just ignoring me and hiding in the back corner. Nevertheless, he continued ignoring me, slicing strawberries for about 3 more minutes. I felt very uncomfortable, unsure if I should just leave or not. I gave him the benefit of the doubt and figured maybe he just didn't notice me in the store. Now at this point I had only felt uncomfortable, no sense of anger (yet). I politely said "Hi, can I get a smoothie?" And his response? Haha, he said "Not like that you can't." In quite possibly the rudest tone you could imagine. I was baffled that the first words he uttered to me were such rude ones. Clearly, I was wrong for giving him the benefit of the doubt. He obviously knew I was in the store the whole time. From then, he went on to tell me that basically I was an idiot for not reading the signs on the black ropes. You know, the ropes that are used to format a line. A line of customers typically found in flourishing businesses. Oh right, that's why I didn't bother with that. Because I was the ONLY person in the store. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen a single person in this store. And deservedly so! To think I ever felt sorry for this man, alone, in his empty store. Anyways apparently I was wrong for walking on the left side of the rope instead of the right side. But he still wanted to know what I'd like to order. L O L. I left and got a pretty decent smoothie across the street at Redifer. Moral of the story: this guy sucks. I mean, I even read previous reviews to see if anyone else had such a poor experience here. He refused to serve someone because of their skin color????? Grow up dude. And to the man who owns this horrendous establishment: I wrote this all for you! Yes, indeed I DO know how to read. And even write. Thank you for the advice on learning to read, though! Maybe you should spend you're free time, in that empty store all alone, learning how to be a polite person. Somewhat mixed feelings on this place... yet I'll give it 4 stars. I got an acai bowl - strawberry banana. I was a little disappointed that per bowl, only 1/2 of an acai packet is used. I believe 2 banana are used so the base is very very banana. I go on... the bowls a huge. Then put granola (which I wasn't a huge fan of the granola they use) on bottom, cover with acai mix, then top with up to four fruits, more granola, and either peanut butter or Nutella. Wow. The fruits you can add on top are hit or miss. You get very generous servings. Some look super fresh like others look like the definitely came out of a can. Like I said I wasn't a huge fan of the granola. It has raisins and chunks of something that were break your teeth kinda hard. The price is kinda steep for me. 9+ dollars for an acai bowl.. I would prefer it be be 7ish, 8 with tax. Not a huge decrease I know but for some reason 9 is just on the verge of overpriced for me. You can also get frozen yogurt and creamery ice cream! The rumors are true!! You can mix ice cream flavors. They only have 6-7 flavors to pick from, but you can mix em so who cares. The interior of this place is lacking a bit. There actually is a decent amount of seating when you count the upstairs loft. However the ceiling leaks and the furniture just looks a little jankie. I guess they don't want to put nice stuff out for college kids.. but still. Also I recommend they have more than 1 employee working so deal with lines when they form. I've gotten food here probably 20 times in the past few years and the owner has been nothing but nice and welcoming and I have yet to seen him not greet a customer with a smile. If you are coming here thinking it is a "yogurt" shop... you know one of those places you get some healthy frozen yogurt in a multitude of flavors and can choose any healthy fruity topping youd like - you are wrong. Yogurt Express is an empty store with a couple choices of frozen yogurt, like soft serve ice cream (in vanilla, chocolate, and peanut butter) and they serve some creamery ice cream as well. I have been here a few times because of it's convenience when I am craving ice cream, and have been disappointed almost every time. The owner kind of stares at you and is usually the only worker. They are not stingy on their portions, but quite pricey. They pile on the toppings, usually candy, but there is a good chance of them being stale. There is a lot of seating, and a neat upstairs loft to sit with friends, but last time I was there gnats were flying everywhere and kept flying into my face. The store does not provide the best experience in my opinion and as a lover of ice cream, it is hard to disappoint me. read more

Hostile mean owner - I took him to court for harrassment and he lost!! Now he is officially guilty of harrassment and he was forced to pay a fine and pay for my court fees! The harrassment charge will show up on his background check! This is from the review I posted on Yelp when the incident happened about 3 months ago: I was already completely out of the store, and passing by Envy nightclub next door, when the owner of Yogurt Express caught up to me. He elbowed me in the side of my stomach to stop me from walking (I'm a woman, by the way, about 5'4"). Stopping me with his elbow, and getting in my face, he proceeded to yell at me saying: "You FAT SLOB! You are not welcome at my store! If you ever come back here, I will remember you, you C*NT!" I was amazed. I gained weight from some medications that I am on and I'm very sensitive about my weight. No one has ever called me a "fat slob." I told him: "Oh, you're harrassing me! I'm calling the police!" So I called the police and 2 officers came within about 10 minutes. They interviewed me and I recalled exactly what happened. And then one officer waited outside with me and the other one went inside Yogurt Express to interview the owner. When the officer came back out he said that the guy, the owner of the store, had admitted to chasing me out of the store, getting in my face, and calling me a "fat slob" but would NOT admit to elbowing me or calling me a c**t. The officers were super duper nice (as a black person I honestly have no idea if police are going to be nice to me or not, but these guys were awesome and they were both white). The police actually called the guy an asshole! He said that he could tell the guy was an asshole, and they were going to check on the cameras outside of Envy nightclub, and if the cameras showed that he had elbowed me then I could press charges. Unfortunately if he just yelled at me I could not press charges for that. read more

One of the places that I visit only when my friends want to. I don't even know why the owner called this place Yogurt Express since the best thing from this place is its Berkey Ice Cream. It only has 3 flavors for the frozen yogurt and I am also not really sure if it is a real frozen yogurt or not since it just tastes like some ice cream cone from McD. The topping are also mediocre standard, nothing special about this place. What makes it worse? The owner... No smile, no hospitality, no nothing. No wonder this place is always empty. I mean, who wants to visit a mediocre place serving mediocre things with grumpy angry owner? Once two of my friends and I came to this place from McD. I had a sundae from McD and brought it inside with me when my friends ordered something... The owner basically told me to fuck off. What the heck? My friends are customers and even though I didn't order anything that time, I always ordered something on my previous visits. Since then I never visit this place again. The place is big, but also unorganized. No atmosphere at all. Boxes all cramped on the cupboard. Old sofas with FM radio playing. Do not visit this place... If you want a frozen yogurt, go to Kiwi Frozen Yogurt. It is the real frozen yogurt place and the people are friendly. If you want ice cream, just go to Berkey? Dirty/unorganized shop - rude worker. I had gone into Yogurt Express looking for something refreshing on a summer night and was taken back by the unclean look of the place, but what REALLY put the "cherry on top of the cake" was the gentlemen who was working behind the counter. He was an older gentlemen - owner/manager/work, I don't know - but he look tired, disheveled and just all around not approachable. Myself and my co-workers easily waited ten minutes in line (on a Monday night) to be served to which there were only four flavors - Peanut Butter, Strawberry, Vanilla, Chocolate yogurt. I was disappointed that he didn't have a refreshing "tart" flavor but I thought I'd give it a try. I asked to sample strawberry - I didn't like it, too creamy. Then I asked to taste peanut butter when I was greeted with an abrupt "NOPE, you can only sample one!" very rudely. I did not like the strawberry and I was not going to pay for something I wasn't able to ensure that I liked. I have gone to Penn State for years and have finally visited this hole-in-the-wall. My biggest regret in college may honestly be not finding this place sooner. I had the berry blend acai bowl and it was unbelievably good. The granola is homemade in the kitchen and their fruit is fresh and organic. Plus you have tons of options of fruit to top off the bowl. The serving is huge it can easily serve two meals. Most of all, there is excellent service. The man that was there was incredibly friendly and conversational. I will absolutely be showing my friends this hidden gem. I am looking forward to the semester staring up again so I can become a regular! read more

My roommate's birthday was on Monday (9/14/15) and we stopped here after picking up a dozen insomnia cookies. We haven't tried the yogurt yet...but their cookie cakes are incredible. As a college student at Penn State, I have made many trips to Yogurt Express for an açaí bowl. This açaí bowl is good, but simple--a packet of açaí blended with frozen fruits and topped with fresh fruit. Every time I've been in, the same man is working. He isn't particularly friendly, but is usually never rude. Unfortunately, the last time I went to treat myself to an açaí bowl with some friends, the man working was extremely rude, specifically targeted directly toward my African American friend. He made snide comments under his breath after making it very clear that she was unwelcome, but that he was happy to serve us white people. Things escalated to verbal attacks by him and at that point we felt it was in our best interest to leave the store mid-ordering. Fortunately, Trader Joe's sells the exact packets of açaí that this man uses, and you can even blend the whole packet in whereas he cuts it in half. If you have a blender, I highly recommend you make your own açaí bowls and avoid dealing with this sad, discriminatory man. read more
