Stopped here for a cold treat after a long day of tournaments. Got here right before the rush hit. When you walk to the front door, there's a sign that directs you to enter from the left side of the building. The front doors are where you exit from. Upon entering, there's an unusual smell. It's not the ice cream or a sweet smell, kinda of an irritating chemical smell. Not sure if that's common here but it was distinct. This place does have over a dozen or so flavors as one time. Toppings are available and cost extra. Portions are not consistent. The small dish of ice cream was packed to the brim of the dish while the large ice cream dish showed each small scoop that was put in it. The patrons behind me ordered small dishes of ice cream too and those portions I would have considered to be a large. Even they questioned it being a small. There is some seating inside but it gets cluster very fast since there's a line of people standing in line to order. We took our ice cream back to our hotel since it was a short drive down the road. Staff was not friendly. The only reason I gave it 3 stars was the convenience of there being ice cream near the hotel and both my husband and son liked it. Stopped in today on our way through town and so happy we did! We were coming from Penn's Caves and headed to Pittsburgh so it was a little off the beaten path but such a nice way to cool off on a hot summer day. The benches outside under the trees were a big plus as well! Lots of flavor options and the inside of the store also has other staples like bread, milk and eggs. Ice cream was very flavorful and I appreciated that there were lots of pieces ad also that they were small pieces which in my opinion makes it feel like there's even more of the flavors/toppings. (Worst thing in the world is getting Oreo ice cream with 1 single large Oreo and everything else is just vanilla). Service was pretty quick too. Only complaint is that the ice cream was really melty from the get-go and when the person handed mine over the entire outside of the bowl was sticky with ice cream from her glove. I am a sucker for family/ locally owned businesses. I was in the area this weekend and heard of this place. Of course I had to stop and take a look at their products. I arrived around 10:00am on a Sunday and it was not busy, but there was a steady stream of costumers. I ended up buying their chocolate milk, three different kinds of cheese, and a coffee drink. The chocolate milk is so creamy and thick. It comes in a glass bottle which can returned at a later date. If you return the bottles, you can save money on your next milk purchase. The three cheeses, sharp American, raw hot pepper, and longhorn cheese, are flavorful and just what I expected. The raw hot pepper is super spicy to me, but may be just right for others. The sharp American cheese is excellent. I wish I purchased a larger block. This place is cute and welcoming. There is also heavy cream, buttermilk, honey, eggs, and so much more available. If it was not 10:00am, I would have definitely ordered some ice cream because I hard it is amazing. If I am ever in the area again, I will be stopping back! read more

My husband was in love with the lemon custard--he said it's the best ice cream he's had in a long time. I had the peanut butter oreo ice cream and it was good! I am from State College and have been eating ice cream at Meyer Dairy all my life. My favorite flavor is Chocolate Peanut Butter. It is just fantastic!!! I do not care for dark/stronger chocolate, so for me, theirs is perfect!!! Their milk is delicious, too, espcially chocolate, & even the skim!!! It is the freshest anywhere!!! There are so many great things about the store/restaurant that beckon customers to return!!! The picnic tables outside & the cows out back, the lovely countryside, the antique milk wagon, lunch, grocery items, cheeses, delicious eggnog during holidays, and the wonderful Meyer family!!! I had stopped In here time and again since the 1980s . Never recall having any problem till today. Went in for some milk and a sundae. A group of 4 people were get waited on with their picks of ice cream treats . 4 younger folks (kids) were working behind the counter. 3 of which were assisting the group in front of me. The fourth looked like she was making something for someone else where as she walked away with it. I was then given a milkshake by one of the girls waiting on the group in front of me, which wasn't mine because I hadn't even ordered yet! She had no idea where it went to. Then the group in front got what they wanted and walked away after paying. I stood there still waiting to be assisted. No one did. I stood there while one girl went and got a milkshake for herself, the one boy walked right by me and no one else was to be seen! So I waited a couple more minutes as there was no one there but the girl sitting down eating her milk shake. Once the boy came back and went by me a second time u spoke up asking for someone to wait on me . I sounded like a dad or boss having to tell them how to do their job. We ordered the lemon curd, chocolate chip brownie, maple walnut, butter pecan and white house. All the flavors were delicious! My favorite was the white house- it had cherries with vanilla ice cream. And the medium was two scoops the size of softballs. If you desire milk for your homemade yogurt or ice cream, you can buy a gallon of it on the counter to your right (as you walk in). Bring your glass bottle for returns and get a discount on your gallon. If you want a sit down meal, there is a small dining area to your left. Great ice cream, great price! read more

I grew up in SC but now I live in Philadelphia. When I come back in town there are three places I always try to hit, one of those places is MD. I'm a huge fan of their cookies and cream, however any flaovr you get will be smooth and creamy. One of the things I love the most about this place is that the portion sizes are great! The small is enough to fill you, and the large is enough to satisfy ice cream lovers like me. :-) Aside from the ice cream I enjoy the old school feel of this place. I love buying ice cream up north because they are not afraid I may don my bathing suit anytime soon--that's the only reason I can come up with as to why in the HOT south, I get a skimpy scoop. Back to the product--we went there after a Penn St. game (WE ARE...) There was a line out the door but it moved quickly. The only hold up was the family of 5 that felt they needed to try every flavor. My husband ordered his peanut butter something, my sister in love ordered chocolate, and I ordered the mocha. The line is an issue, because you are supposed to get in line from the far left side of the building for ice cream cones, but people still enter at the center and manage to squirrel their way into the line. That's really frustrating for those of us who follow directions. They really need to use a cord or be more active about telling people where to be in line for ice cream cones. No idea what they are building in the parking lot, otherwise it is exactly the same as it was when I came here as a child. But, I can guarantee that the two dairy farmers were hoping to at least supplement their meager living off the land. Don and Joe are from an era when hard work, honesty, quality, value, good service and customer satisfaction were the foundations on which every business was built and how they went about their daily routine when they first opened Meyer Dairy in 1970. Sadly though, Don was killed in a plane crash in 1982, but Joe, now 84 years old, is still at the dairy store every day. The store is perched on a hill overlooking State College and is a Mecca for connoisseurs of milk, ice cream and other dairy items. The milk at Meyers it's so fresh and is sold in cool retro-looking half-gallon glass bottles. When you buy it you pay a one-time deposit on the bottle and when the bottle is empty, you bring it back and exchange it for a clean, fresh and full one - recycling in its truest form! Then there's the ice cream. Don and Joe were making handmade ice cream and selling it to a cult following before Ben and Jerry were in underpants. Meyer Dairy ice cream rocks! It's creamy, tasty and the masses agree. If you don't believe me, stop by the store on any summer evening. If you can even get in the parking lot, you will immediately be daunted by the line of customers which is always out the door. So from milk to eggs, butter to bread, ice cream to chili dogs (yes chili dogs), Meyer Dairy has it all and does it right. When you go, and I know you will, you might see Joe hovering around or even working the cash register.
