MeXo is a pretty unique place. My boyfriend and I met some friends there for dinner on a Saturday around 8 pm and were seated right away without a reservation. They have their own parking lot, which is really nice. The interior is warm and comfortable, with different rooms and little areas that make it feel cozy. I wanted to try some sotol because I'd never had it before. Our server wasn't able to tell us what sotol is made of, which I thought was a little odd. However we got a half shot of one of the sotol choices and it came with a little chaser. The sotol was very smooth and the chaser was savory yet bright. I really liked it. If you like tequila this is a good option for something different. We started with an order of Smoked Brisket Huaraches which were delicious! They're little bean cakes topped with a savory sauce and shredded brisket. The brisket was tender and juicy with just enough fat, and the bean cake was moist but held up the meat well. I was expecting them to be dry so I was pleasantly surprised! The green salsa was also really flavorful. Everyone at the table loved the huaraches. For my entree, I ordered the Trio of Carnes ala Parrilla, which is basically a deconstructed taco dish that comes with steak, chicken, and carnitas with some pinto beans, guacamole, tortillas, and some spicy salsa. It was a pretty small portion of food for $36 and I was completely disappointed because all of the meat was dry. Sooo dry. Luckily the beans and guacamole helped, but I really expect perfectly cooked meat for $36, so that was a bummer. I tried a bite of my boyfriend's fish tacos and they were really delicious -- expertly seasoned, lightly battered and not super greasy. I definitely would order those next time. I didn't see the brisket tacos that other reviews have mentioned, otherwise I would've tried those. I also had a margarita, which was nicely balanced and not very sour. It's shaken tableside which I think is a little over the top, but the drink itself was good. For dessert, we shared the flourless chocolate torte and the churros. Both were okay, but nothing special. The chocolate torte was very dense and intensely chocolatey. The churros were hot and fresh. Overall I had an okay experience, but probably won't be rushing back. Our server was polite and pretty on top of things, but I was a bit thrown by her not knowing what sotol is made from, as MeXo is one of the only places I've ever seen it locally. (I looked it up... it's made from the sotol plant!) And I just can't get over the overcooked meat for $36. read more

Stopped by for a quick drink and enjoyed their Happy Hour! All of it was so good! Definitely recommend the Smoked Carnitas Huarache I've never had it before. It's essentially an oval shaped mess dough filled with a ton of good stuff. It was soo good! Everything was gluten free pretty much and I didn't get sick. Drinks were nice and service was 10/10. MeXo is a downtown Mexican restaurant that may disappoint you. For all its hype, our experience there left us wanting. Here's where we were let down: 1) Space: Just north of downtown Grand Rapids in an emerging area, you'd expect it to be nice. With the exception of a few beautiful paintings on the walls, it's a bare place giving off a cold vibe. It's not welcoming or nice in any way. 2) Service: It was a little odd. The server was passionate about the restaurant but provided inconsistent service and poor food recommendations. 3) Drinks: If you like more sweet drinks, save your money. Their drinks are more bitter (even the marg wasn't very sour) and lack complexity. 4) Food: The four of us found each of our plates just average with the exception of the queso fundido. The Pozole Vegano soup lacked flavor. In terms of positives, I enjoyed the creativity behind the menu- focusing on pre-Hispanic food from the Mexican region. read more

Chef Oscar and TJ served us one of the best meals I have ever had anywhere. The avocado ceviche with lime, coconut milk, mushrooms and cilantro was delicious and an unique concept. Our server was wonderful and he gave our table tremendous service with food savvy descriptions. Our dinner guest were both chefs and they truly enjoyed their experience as well. We came here before going to a show at Devos. There was an awesome season pass holder special and we had only been here once before, years ago and hasn't returned because it didn't stand out. We were pleasantly surprised! We each got a mexo margarita and it was delicious! Not too tart and had a nice effervescence. We started with the salsa duo. We loved the molcajete salsa, it was smoky and not too spicy at all. The taquera salsa had delicious flavors but definitely had a lot of heat. I liked having both together since it tempered the heat of the taquera a little bit. Chips were homemade and delicious. We each got the deconstructed tacos, I got the carnitas and my husband got the steak. Both were really amazing! The carnitas were flavorful and juicy and the steak was seasoned impeccably. The tacos came with more salsa, guacamole, beans, cilantro, and onions. It was fun to assemble them ourselves. The tortillas were also really tasty and held up well. We shared the goat cheese churros and holy smokes. This was one of the best desserts I've ever had. I could use even more goat cheese because the bites it was stronger in were unreal. We were so excited by this meal and wanted to try everything on the menu, we bought tickets to their next chefs dinner while still eating dinner. read more

I had an excellent first experience at MeXo. This is a pretty nouveau take on Mexican cuisine that is [in some ways] comparable to other Mexican restaurants in town such as Luna and Donkey. It's very fancy and quite pricey, but overall the experience is worth the price. Their menu isn't extremely expansive, but it contains a lot of interesting items, it was hard for me to decide what to get. I decided on the Cuitlacoche Tamal stack, and I was surprised to see they had cuitlacoche, which is corn smut/mold, a Mexican delicacy, which is pretty edgy for GR's food scene. It was very delicious, albeit a bit too salty for my palette. My friend got an extra bloody carne asada platter and loved it. I loved my mezcal margarita as well. So the ambience is definitely where Mexo shines the most. There's a lot of nice Fridas and dia de muertos and other Mexican motif artworks lining the walls, done very tastefully. Some of the areas in the restaurant are incomplete, like the outdoor patio, where we sat. Some of the murals are unfinished, but I like where they're going, I can't knock a good work in progress, but one of the murals that is completed is breathtaking... it's an agave farm landscape featuring gorgeous mountains and a sky bursting with color. As someone who has painted murals in the past, the work that this mural artist did is impeccable. I definitely enjoyed MeXo. I enjoy the direction they're going. Their concept is solid, and with time, this restaurant will be more fleshed out. It's a bit out of my price range to go there regularly, but I am curious to try more of their dishes and to watch this restaurant grow more into itself. read more

Visiting from AZ. Sonoran mexican food is simply the best! The food here wonderful! I swear I heard mariachi's with every bite. The people should know this is the place for mexican food!! The only place in Grand Rapids to go!! The freezing weather meant nothing when I ate the shrimp!! The perfect spice and cooked to perfection. I felt like I was still at home. The fish..fresh..hot..crispy. A beautiful balance of colors and flavors. Torta in a bowl didn't make sense, but it didn't matter. Absolutely delicious!! The corn dip, a party in your mouth everytime you take a bite. Every bite is like meeting someone new at a party and being happy that they came. They seemed short staffed but I could feel a sense of team. They were all helping each other. Nobody wanted for anything. Someone always checking on you. First of all, the gorgeous mural in their parking lot. Stellar! Inside there are additional murals, a tribute to Frida Kahlo, and all things dias de los muertos (skulls, etc) for sale. The food is good. There are dishes I would love to try next time around, including dessert, but tonight it was salmon veracruzana for me served over black rice and mole (red) enchiladas for my mom. Her cilantro rice came out undercooked and had to be remedied with a new batch. Service was also a bit slow. Overall though, thumbs up! read more

What a cool place this is. It reminds me of another upscale Mexican place in town, in regards to the food. The chips and salsa were delicious - loved the hot salsa Verde! Wish the guacamole - omg I love good guac! The stars of the show were the pork belly and pineapple Sopas, and the Mexo Old Fashioned. By far the best Old Fashioned I've ever had - it was so smokey and delicious. The service was also great, but a bad thing to say. Love this place, can't wait to go back. read more

Finally stopped in to try Mexo once we saw their advertisement for $3 tacos during ArtPrize. There were only 2 other tables with guests around noon on a Wednesday. Our server never mentioned how the taco special worked and we had to ask about the sign out front, which seemed weird. I'm assuming they don't bring it up because they want you to spend a lot more money on the rest of the menu. Two of us ordered the taco special which ended up not being that much cheaper. I'm not sure how many tacos you get when ordered the $10 entree but I ordered 3 for $9. My wife had Oscars Baja Tacos and they were very tasty. Still seems like $16 is way overpriced for tacos in Grand Rapids. The last thing we ordered was the Oaxaca Queso Chile Relleno which was very flavorful with a kick. Overall, the atmosphere is inviting and the food tasted great. As others have said, it's much higher priced than all the other higher end Mexican options in town. read more

Finally tried MeXo a few weeks ago, and it was phenomenal. The huaraches were so good that I went with the brisket mole for my entre, and it did not disappoint. My only regret is not trying the quatros leches for dessert, but I just too full from the rich and massive portion of brisket. read more

Decor is 10/10. I'd go back just to feel immersed in the atmosphere again. The menu was stellar. It's usually hard to find authentic Mexican food that isn't tacos and tortas. Mexican cuisine is so elaborate and diverse that MeXo has captured some of it in its restaurant. I'll definitely be coming back. I wish I would've taken pictures of my food but I was literally too excited and raving to my date about the authenticity of the menu and seeing items on there I had not seen since living and growing up in Mexico. I'll say parking isn't exactly plentiful but it's also not impossible to find. Did I mention how gorgeous the decor is? And the food while on the pricey end is somehow acceptable due to the atmosphere. I wish there were more places like this in Grand Rapids. read more

Today was my first visit to MeXo and I really enjoyed the flavors of the food as well as the space. There weren't many people in for lunch so it was easy to have conversation. We started off with chips and guacamole - they had a few root vegetables in the guacamole that were fun to dip as well. I ordered 2 tacos (brisket and chicken) - hands down the brisket was AWESOME. It was a little spicy but I think it was just the jalapeño. Another person at my table got the brisket sandwich and he said "this is probably the best sandwich I've had in GR". The third person got 3 beef tacos and he cleared his plate within about 5 minutes! Next time I visit I'll have to go for dinner to try the mezcal they had listed! read more

I loved the live music they had. I've never heard a live Mexican band before. It was cool and I felt neat! My parents said their coffee was good but very unusual. You have to have an open mind: it has roasted anise and cinnamon flavor. They said it reminded them of Pho haha but they liked it. We used three cups of salsa to make our food less dry. My husband and I went on a Saturday afternoon, so it was pretty slow there. We had a reservation but definitely wasn't needed at that time. The restaurant had such a nice atmosphere and the workers were so friendly and did such an amazing job. We started with the Mole bites and they were SO good! Would definitely recommend those. Then my husband and I each got the Chile Relleno that was on special (we are both obsessed with chile rellenos so we get them wherever we go). But hey it all turned out great! Everything tasted amazing. And the desserts are incredible. Our only dislike was the parking... there wasn't any. They say you can park behind IF THERES ROOM but we were there at 3pm (not exactly rush hour) and that lot was full, as were all the others. Bring change and find a meter somewhere I guess. To me, something is missing. The non-warm florescent lights, maybe? Was curious if they had a Happy Hour. They don't. I hope that will change since it's a Tequila + Mezcal Bar. I thought they'd have flights. They don't. I hope that changes because, well, they're a Tequila + Mezcal Bar. Food was good, but, if I'm paying $16 for three tacos, they better be out of this world. They were okay. We also order the shrimp ceviche, but we never got it and, at this point, didn't really need it. So, instead, we ordered dessert - the bread pudding (pictured). This restaurant had 3.5 stars rating on Yelp. I read the reviews and it was a mix of yes it was great and no-don't come here. But because we were close by, we tried it. We got there around 7pm. First red flag...not busy at all. Bar was empty. Some of the servers congregated there chatting. The hostess greeted us quickly and sat us. Our server was nice and friendly but no personality. So to the food: we ordered the ceviche, pastor pork belly and guacamole for apps. Ceviche lacked flavor, pork belly pieces was on top of a tart shaped bread (3 pieces)...it was okay but expecting more meat for a $12 app. The guacamole was my favorite. Made well and full of flavor. Entree we got was the Boar tenderloin. It lacked flavor. I didn't like the plantain croquettes that accompanied it. I did enjoy the desserts. We had the leches cake and bread pudding. The four of us were very pleased. Starting with our wonderful server, Christine who was very personable and attentive. We started with a Los Amantes Anejo and a Marca Negra San Martin Mezcal. Quite pleasing. The guys then ordered an Oaxacan Old Fashioned and another exotic Mexican cocktail. Our entrees were equally delicious: Pollo en Mole Poblano, Tamar stack and Camarones Oaxaca Mole Negro. The food was pretty good, but over priced. We got the Carne Asada, which is a $30 plate, and the meat should have been much more tender for that price. I ordered it medium rare, and it was still pretty chewy. There are a lot of great Mexican restaurants around, so not sure I would go back to this one. read more
