We had a great Galentine's Day at Mexo. This was our first time and we enjoyed the concept of the restaurant. The waiter was friendly and helpful. He suggested the huaraches as the appetizer and they were phenomenal. Probably my most favorite part of the meal. Highly recommend! The skinny margarita tasted fresh, and quickly turned into two throughout the meal. I ordered the red snapper for my main and it was cooked to specification and tasted fine. My friend ordered the mahi mahi tacos and I appreciated the crunch and flavor balance when I took a bite. We splurged for dessert and had an interesting empanada type dough filled with guava purée and goat cheese with some coffee to wash it all down. Overall, a great experience. I came here with some friends on a Saturday evening. We had made a reservation in advance, and didn't have to wait at all upon arrival. For starters, we ordered the classic guacamole to share. It was good, but the portion size was a bit small, especially for something that's traditionally a shareable appetizer. For my meal, I tried the cuitlacoche tamal stack. It was unlike anything I've had before, but honestly it was really good! It had an interesting combination of textures, but was filling, hearty, and unique. It was also served with a side of beans. Overall, the atmosphere was welcoming and clean, the staff was friendly, and the food was good. After passing by it so often, my friend and I finally tried Mexo! It was really nice inside and I loved that every table had a candle to set the mood. Our server was very knowledgable about the menu and gave us some suggestions since we were both indecisive on what to get. I decided to try their oaxacan margarita which was new to me because I've never had mezcal before! The server told me that it was going to be smokey compared to the usual margarita that uses tequila. It definitely reminded me of having a cookout but in a drink! My friend and I got the shrimp ceviche to share and my mouth is still watering from how good it was Then I got the pollo con mole poblano, one of popular options the server suggested. I loved that the mole came with cilantro rice and it was a big portion so I took home leftovers. The only thing that could've been better was more seasoning on the vegetables that came on the side. My friend got their deconstructed tacos which was pretty cool and came with tortillas and a side of the cilantro rice. Everything was great - food, service, vibe. Price was as expected. I couldn't get over how fresh and flavorful everything was! Some of the best food I've had. Called repeatedly only to get busy signal perhaps 20 times. Son drove back to get queso. Tacos are tasty, but ridiculously small for $25. Queso is not worth $16. Elevated, authentic, delicious Mexican food. It's pricier than your typical Mexican restaurant but definitely worth it! We had the enchilada Rojas, esquites, and a mole carnita dish (can't remember the name) and enjoyed it all. Service was quick. Any restaurant that makes house made huitlacoche gets 5 stars in my book. With MeXo's mission to create a menu of a mix of pre-Hispanic mesoamerican and modern Mexican dishes I would say this beautifully plated huitlacoche dish hits home. I'm impressed I can find a Mexican delicacy like this in Grand Rapids. We also tried a Mayan dip as our appetizer which was a fantastic start. Cute spot and great location. We kicked off our culinary adventure with a couple of their signature cocktails: The Paloma Rojo: Smoky, refreshing, and citrusy, this concoction featured blanco mezcal, Aperol, grapefruit, lime, orange agave, and a chile salt rim. A perfect way to awaken the palate! I ordered the Palenque Margarita: This was a truly exceptional margarita - smooth, upscale, and expertly crafted with El Tesoro Reposado, Grand Marnier, fresh lime juice, and house-made orange agave syrup. The tableside preparation added a touch of interactive fun. With drinks in hand, we delved into the menu, starting with the MeXo Queso Fundido. While I typically prefer a smooth cream queso dip to a Fundido, this Fundido was a winner, and I would easily order it again. The two cheeses, Chihuahua & Oaxaca chees,e were a perfect melty combo that was elevated with a balanced addition of chorizo, poblano peppers, and roasted corn. It was gooey without being too stringy, and the house-made corn nixtamal tortillas were fantastic. We could not stop eating them. Next up was the grilled octopus, which turned out to be my favorite dish of the night. The Pulpo Ceviche featured perfectly grilled octopus with red onion, cilantro, lime, goat butter (I am not sure I have ever had goat butter, who knew?), tomato, avocado, and cucumber. As an octopus aficionado, I can confidently say this was one of the best preparations I've had in Grand Rapids. The octopus was tender and charred just right, and the citrusy marinade, along with the other fresh ingredients, created a flavor explosion in every bite. I can't say I've ever been to a pre-Hispanic Mexican restaurant, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. It was delicious and definitely changed my view of Mexican food. I'm thinking moles and other yummy foods! The Sikil P'aak/Pumpkin seed dip was delicious with their house-made tortilla corn chips. There was a hint of spice to complement the creamy deliciousness of the pepitas. Esquites/Roasted corn dip- this was easily my favorite of the night! Think of it kind of like street corn/elotes but in dip form. I would highly recommend this! Pato Con Atapakua- This wasa duck breast with Purepecha sauce, with black rice and charred zucchini. The zucchini was prepared simply, which served as a good canvas for the sauce. I couldn't tell any pineapple flavors though. The duck breast was cooked perfectly and was juicy. Quatro Leches Cake- OK I am super biased as dessert is my favorite, but this is a delicious play on the tres leches cake traditional dessert. Because it is soaked, it was super rich and moist, but somehow the cake itself holds up well to the soaking. Very fun! read more

Salsa duo is sooo good- one was spicy, one chunkier and middle is pickled veggies. Corn dip was 50/50- some loved, some didn't. I thought it has a little smoke to it. Skip the skirt steak, it was undercooked med-rare; too much sinew. Some pieces too difficult to chew, needed to be spit out; required something more than a butter knife to cut. Visiting from out of town, both my mom and I thoroughly enjoyed the fresh Mexican food from MeXo. I ordered their Carne Asada a la Tampiqueña 1939 and mom the guacamole (lighter appetite than myself). Both were delicious. The steak melted in your mouth! We had very quick service, and the interior is filled with authentic Mexican art and graphics. Outside, there are tasteful, welcoming murals. Four of us went for lunch after a meeting for work. Not busy.... only two other tables with 2 customers at each table I had to ask twice for hot sauce waiter Robbie R. Snapped at me both times and said, "salsa is on the taco" looking at my taco it was smaller than the others "No salsa" Regardless, I was requesting salsa for my beans and rice! Had high expectations for MeXo, but wasn't thrilled with the meal at all. We ordered a few margaritas, pretty standard, and got their little puebla mole bites and their queso fundido for appetizers. Our group thought the queso was alright, and the puebla mole bites were pretty good. The 2 entrees we wanted to order were out of stock, so my friends got the fish baja tacos which were a decent sized portion, but lacking enough papaya salsa to make them pop (you can get better fish tacos at Taco Borracho). I got the enchiladas rojas which somehow tasted like nothing at all.. I did not mention this, but asked for some salt and the waitress came back to the table to ask WHY I felt I needed salt... so I mentioned that they were a bit bland. Then she came back to the table with the salt and assured me that the entire kitchen tried the red sauce and that it was seasoned perfectly.. LOL.. ok? Unfortunately running out of entrees, a pretentious chef, and expensive mediocre food has MeXo falling to the bottom of our list in a city full of options. read more

We were meeting up with a friend of ours who lives in Grand Rapids and chose to meet her here for lunch. None of us had been here before so it was a fun new experience. We ordered two margaritas and a Mexican Old Fashioned. Oof! Those were some strong drinks! My co diners ordered taco platters and I got a Mexican Brisket Sandwich. Everything was very authentic and delicious. I loved the ambiance there! Beautiful paintings adorned the walls. There was a downstairs area with a private dining area and another bar. Our server was very friendly and patient and took his time to describe items and make recommendations. Wow!! So very much impressed with this place! I had a won a gift card from here and FINALLY got the chance to use it and took my mom here for lunch. We came for lunch around noon on Saturday during ArtPrize and there was only one other group eating so we were sat and served right away. We started with drinks. They are a mezcal and tequila bar so there was plenty to choose from. The drinks were strong but not in a bad way! We had the Queso Fundido as an appetizer recommended by the server and it was SO delicious. Served with corn tortillas that they ground and make in house (!!!) and served with a little side of salsa. Literally SO tasty. I could not get enough of this. We each got a torta as our meal and this was also delicious. They also said they make the bread in house. It definitely tasted fresh and the meat was so juicy and well seasoned. I got medium spice level and it was perfect. It came in a little broth/soup and I was just so pleasantly surprised with how tasty everything was. The presentation of the dishes was great too. I hope to come back here again soon! read more

Met a friend for Sunday brunch before a musical at the civic center. The food was just ok, despite the nice presentation. I ordered the pork torta that's dipped in this sauce that can be mild/med/hot. While the sauce was flavorful, the meat while nicely shredded lacked in seasoning/flavor. The bread was a little too thick but not bad. My friend ordered the huevos rancheros and liked it. We also ordered the shrimp ceviche. It was quite hot which our server mentioned, but it was presented more like a salad. Had sliced avocado, sliced shrimp vs diced, and sliced radish and cucumber. The chip it came with were fresh, but I think if the ingredients to the ceviche were prepared differently it would make it better. I enjoyed a mimosa with grapefruit juice, and my friend had a Bloody Mary with tequila. If I could rate the service, cocktail menu, and atmosphere, alone, this would be 4 stars. The atmosphere is spacious and open, and there was live music a woman playing percussion and a man playing keyboard. This was a new thing per the server so. It sure if more music is to come. Had brunch at Mexo this Sunday morning, and just wow!!!! Hands down the very best chicken enchilada I have ever eaten!!! The sauce had perfect spice and richness, the chicken was tender, and the tortilla was just flawlessly yummy. A duo of musicians set up while we were there, and my husband said "good thing we are almost done". Too often a band = deafening noise. Could not be further from the truth in this case. They started playing, and my husband said "too bad we are almost done eating and we have to go". They were outstanding!!!! Everything we ate was perfect, but even if it hadn't been the art, and charm of the venue would have been well worth the trip. It was a bit disheartening but we'd just move on and find somewhere else downtown. We finally made it but still sat by the bar. The service was fairly slow but the meal was fantastic! I really do think they have great food and would enjoy it again, but I think people need to know that there is going to be a delay on food and service so not to try and stop by a quick meal. read more

Gorgeous presentation of dishes -the Oaxacan marg with mezcal is a smoky dream! We got sopes, octopus ceviche, a tamal stack, the pork belly, and four leches cake. The best for me, by far was the margarita and gratis tortilla chips. I also enjoyed the tamal stack. The pork belly was a bit dry and went unfinished. The cake was interesting in novel execution (fruity), but not very flavorful. I probably also would not reorder. Our waitress was a smidge slow, but very friendly. MeXo is a pretty unique place. My boyfriend and I met some friends there for dinner on a Saturday around 8 pm and were seated right away without a reservation. They have their own parking lot, which is really nice. The interior is warm and comfortable, with different rooms and little areas that make it feel cozy. I wanted to try some sotol because I'd never had it before. Our server wasn't able to tell us what sotol is made of, which I thought was a little odd. However we got a half shot of one of the sotol choices and it came with a little chaser. The sotol was very smooth and the chaser was savory yet bright. I really liked it. If you like tequila this is a good option for something different. We started with an order of Smoked Brisket Huaraches which were delicious! They're little bean cakes topped with a savory sauce and shredded brisket. The brisket was tender and juicy with just enough fat, and the bean cake was moist but held up the meat well. I was expecting them to be dry so I was pleasantly surprised! The green salsa was also really flavorful. Everyone at the table loved the huaraches. For my entree, I ordered the Trio of Carnes ala Parrilla, which is basically a deconstructed taco dish that comes with steak, chicken, and carnitas with some pinto beans, guacamole, tortillas, and some spicy salsa. It was a pretty small portion of food for $36 and I was completely disappointed because all of the meat was dry. Sooo dry. Luckily the beans and guacamole helped, but I really expect perfectly cooked meat for $36, so that was a bummer. I tried a bite of my boyfriend's fish tacos and they were really delicious -- expertly seasoned, lightly battered and not super greasy. I definitely would order those next time. I didn't see the brisket tacos that other reviews have mentioned, otherwise I would've tried those. I also had a margarita, which was nicely balanced and not very sour. It's shaken tableside which I think is a little over the top, but the drink itself was good. For dessert, we shared the flourless chocolate torte and the churros. Both were okay, but nothing special. The chocolate torte was very dense and intensely chocolatey. The churros were hot and fresh. Overall I had an okay experience, but probably won't be rushing back. Our server was polite and pretty on top of things, but I was a bit thrown by her not knowing what sotol is made from, as MeXo is one of the only places I've ever seen it locally. Stopped by for a quick drink and enjoyed their Happy Hour! All of it was so good! Definitely recommend the Smoked Carnitas Huarache I've never had it before. It's essentially an oval shaped mess dough filled with a ton of good stuff. It was soo good! Everything was gluten free pretty much and I didn't get sick. Drinks were nice and service was 10/10.
