Love this place. Working in Penrose we head over to the Ellerslie location any chance we can and several orders of the chicken is always on the cards! We love the Mexican beers (nice & light when you have to get back to the office) or the cold brew coffee which makes the afternoon at work fly by. Love the slightly fusion flavours in the specials and the awesome vegetarian options for those who are that way inclined. The decor is AWESOME, the service unfussy and friendly and it's not too hard on the pocket. It's not the most authentic Mexican food you'll find, but that's the half the fun. Good for kids and great for groups - we're counting down to the next work occasion so we can have some more of the chicken! It was my first time in here, there were quite a few dishes to choose from. We ended up having Spice Duck Leg, Eggplant, Xocolate Mole Beef, Soft Shell Tacos, and Mexico Fried Chicken. Been a few times and had a great meal every time. The tacos are well priced and so tasty - you have to try the deep fried chicken pieces - they are to die for! The tapas style of lots of small dishes is a nice way to eat and service has always been quick if you still feel hungry and need another taco! Coming from Los Angeles, where I grew up on Mexican food, the bar was always set really high. Well Mexico easily cleared the bar. Food is amazing. It is an extremely relaxed atmosphere and a place I can see coming for beer and some tapas. Had the Calamari off the specials menu. Amazing. Also had the fish taco and there were so many textures and flavours that it all combined nicely on the palate and then exploded. The rollitos were excellent and the pork and shrimp meatballs had such a flavour profile, we almost kept ordering them. Only disappointment was they were out if Dos Equis. Bummer. But everything else was fantastic. Staff was very attentive and an empty plate didn't last long on the table. Great experience and easily will be a regular favourite. read more

Great ambiance, and some interesting flavours. Having lived in Mexico before, this food is not Mexican or even tex-mex, it's a tapas style Mexican fusion. The tostadas were yum, but difficult to share. We found a bone in a pulled pork taco AND a bone in a fish quesadilla. We sent back the queso fundido, just awful. I've given them 3 stars because there was no argument when we sent it back. No charge. The kids menu quesadilla and churros were a hit with our daughter, but this is not a great place for family dining. EIther people have never really tasted delicious Mexican food or they can settle for anything. I'm a fussy eater. The food is JUST OK the portions are small and not everything tastes that great. I have tasted better. the ambience looks great and all that but I can do without it. a delicious food in a cave would get more stars than this. we had potatoe crips again the sauce wiasnt right the potatoes wre alright my mushroom taco was a disappointment,the quesadilla was alright. read more

It's all about setting your expectations.... The offerings are Tex-Mex based and considering the location it was not bad at all. Service was fine and the atmosphere was definitely date night. If you have traveled to Mexico or visited the SW US you will need to adapt. Thankfully there was a few hot sauce options on the table to kick up the flavor. I love the interior and ambiance of this place but the food is a real let down. I often find the flavours to be bland compared to what I expect from the descriptions on the menu.  Be aware that this isn't your standard Tex Mex kind of Mexican so your familiar crunchy tacos and burritos won't be on offer. The front area with picnic tables is great for groups and the cocktails are delicious. The fried chicken is recommended! read more

Mexico is always a hoot for a fun, casual dinner! When I went the other day they had redone the menu but I was ever so pleased they kept some of the old favourites like the fried chicken... can't beat it! Great atmosphere and beautiful decorations make Mexico a great dining experience. They also have plethura of food and drink options on the menu so you are never stuck trying to find something you feel like. I love that they have expanded so much so wherever you live there should be one closer than town or Ponsonby if that's not your cup of tea :) read more

Ive been to mexico and eaten amazing food but im sad to say this nostalgic styled mexican restaurant was a poor representation of amazing food with flare. The staff were not very attentive and the food came out staggered so we all ate at different times which is always a no. The lamb soft shell tacho special was dry and not very appealing. Last night we had a very special birthday in our tight-knit group - We had all been to Mexico Ponsonby before (which is a super busy establishment) And had such a great time, the delicious plates of food came flying out and we all left feeling really full. We were all looking forward to going back but trying somewhere more local. Excitedly we were all headed to Mexico Ellerslie and had opted (AGAIN) for the Set Menu 'Feista Menu'. We waited about 2-3 minutes to be seated by the manager who was less than friendly. Anyway we decided on our cocktails, a few of us lingered at the bar around 10 minutes waiting to be served. It was well worth the wait when mine arrived - It was delicious. We had a table of 12 (8 starving males and 4 ladies) and were given two small bowls (about 10 chips in each bowl) of corn chips and Salsa, Then given 4 portions of this corn dish - ALL BETWEEN 12 people. We asked if we could have another portion as it wasn't cutting it - She declined abruptly and handed us the full menu and said we can pay for extra if we want more food.. so we kindly requested to stop the Set Menu as we had been there an HOUR and only been given such a small amount of food and we would pay for what we had eaten. She said no and that the kitchen had prepped for us - that the rest of our Food would be out soon and took an order for which 'Soft Shell Taco' we would like. 30 minutes later they arrived. One had been requested without spicy sauce. It came with Spicy sauce. I said we ordered one without sauce the snotty waitress fanned around asking whose it was - A friend joked 'I'll have it' she slammed down the plate and said 'well u can have it and someone else can pay for it' - I picked up the plate and said 'excuse me we asked for no spicy sauce so you have got the order wrong' and she stormed off. Mine arrived and it was under-cooked and cold. We were all extremely unhappy with the wait time (For a kitchen that had apparently 'PREPPED' for our arrival) and the rudeness of the staff - I'd actually never experienced such terrible customer service.. That I decided I would say something. I was not going to pay $35 + for this meal and God knows how long the rest of our food was going to take to come out. It was 8:45 by then and we had all arrived just after 7pm! After a lengthy argument and a landslide of excuses, she finally agreed to let us leave and pay for what we had. She then walked off and proceeded to complain ABOUT us amongst the other staff while we were still there - HOW PROFESSTIONAL.. BUT It gets worse - After such a hostile experience a member of our group said 'This place is the pits' (And that's him putting it lightly) The guy behind the bar said 'What!' in an aggressive tone and then proceeded to drop his belongings down and said 'Let's go then' We will NEVER be back to MEXICO Ellerslie. read more

Booked weeks in advance for business dinner for 11 people for 8:30. Was tabled at bench type table where we could not even all fit in. Highly uncomfortable and embarrassing. Then ther service! You had to beg to get service and it was BAD. Mexican restaurant with no guacamole. It was noisy with heaters on when not even cold; extremely bad service and food portions that is tapas style. I had a quick lunch here on a Friday. The place was busy but I shared a long table with some other workers. And then was forgotten about until I flagged a wait-thing and asked where I should order my lunch. I had 3 separate orders: taco chips and salsa followed by soft taco with venison and soft taco with salmon. The taco chips arrived first and took me about 2 minutes to eat, well there were only about 6 on a plate although the salsa was great. Then the soft tacos arrived. The venison was a bit tastier than the salmon but again neither was a large serving. All 3 were side order sized but added up to $22 so don't expect to gain any weight here. Maybe that was the attraction for the mainly female clientele? Tasty but insubstantial. And apart from the taco chips not really anything Mexican about any of them. But I guess it is a new take on Mexican food so good on you. read more

Went here on a Wednesday, at lunchtime - they were pretty busy. I specifically asked for a rush order and they were great - I had my food within 10 minutes. Fried Chicken was amazing as always, and the Pork Belly taco was good. Really good service, even the new-ish wait staff. read more

This is my favourite Mexico in Auckland. The food/drink/service is the same as their original restaurant in Britomart. But the larger size, and different decor provide a much nicer and relaxed atmosphere. As per the norm for Mexico, food is very well priced and always tasty, but drinks are very expensive for what you get. I usually get the specials for something different and of course the menu changes every 3 months. The fried chicken stalwart is always amazing, as is the guacamole and salsa. This is definitely the best Mexican restaurant around the Ellerslie area. read more

Seeing as the weather has taken a bit of a turn this week, we decided to warm up with Mexico's winter menu and comfort ourselves with some good ol' fried and flavourful food. Having fallen in love with the niche original restaurant in Britomart, we were super excited when the Ellerslie restaurant opened, bringing that very distinct Mimi Gilmour Tijuana cool kid Mexican feel to our local hood. No matter whether you're there for a lazy lunch or a tequila laced dinner, you're guaranteed to have a good time with all your amigos. Pictured below is Mexico's infamous Fried Chicken, the Chicken Quesadilla with Mole Poblano, Corriander, Garlic Chips and Blackened Onion Crema and the Braised Lamb, Pumpkin and Guajillo Pepper Soup with Quinoa and Tortilla Shards. All the food was well seasoned and flavourful, with the fried chicken in particular deserving a shot out for being crispy perfection. Having been to the britomart Mexico and had an overall pleasing experience we thought we'd meet some friends at Ellerslies new version with an overseas visitor. We sat outside and I couldn't quite place what used to be in the outside area before, I was surprised I had forgotten it used to be a petrol station, the ambience was awesome as a semi outdoor, festively lit area. We decided to try all three of the chefs specials and the fave fried chicken. The pork belly quesadilla kind of threw us, the ingredients of black beans, kale and pork belly were almost non existent, it could have just been cheese fr all we could tell. The squid and chorizo salad was tasty but tiny, having no real salad base, it was immediately disappointing but slightly lifted once tasted. Patatas were not bad but not crispy. On the bright side, the rest of our party were pretty happy. Won't be rushing back unfortunately! read more

One of the worst customer service experiences in Ellerslie Mexico tonight. And since I've just got back from New York, that's saying something. We went to Mexico Ellerslie for my dad's birthday. Ordered the prawn quesadilla and there were no prawns in it. We just assumed they had taken the wrong order but when the bill came they charged us for the prawn quesadilla. We told the lady at the front of house and she dismissed us. Wouldn't take off the 2 dollars off the bill and was very rude, saying we were dumb and probably missed the prawns and we were dumb to assume that they had taken the wrong order and not said something. So first they stuff up and then they insult us. Good one Mexico. We used to spend hundreds of dollars here, but between this awful service and the food poisoning we got from the cerviche in Britomart the last time, won't be coming back. read more
