I visited the Sylvia park location but since it's not on Yelp I will write my review here. This is a fusion restaurant with Mexico as inspiration, but for me has more style than substance. The staff were friendly and the service was fast, the decor is brilliant, but the food is way off. A carne asada taco really only requires steak, onion, cilantro and salsa. The carne asada taco here had fried onion rings and chipotle mayo. The only thing I could taste when I bit into it was the mayo. The battered shrimp taco tasted like turmeric. With the lack of authentic mexican food in NZ, I really wonder why this restaurant chain thought it needed to change up on an amazing cuisine, and then to name the restaurant "Mexico". I can't tell if it's arrogance or a lack of confidence to reproduce the real flavors. It neither produced something special and new, nor reproduced the magic of the original. Mexico is one of my favourite eateries in Auckland, for its vibrant and fresh Mexican cuisine, extensive tequila list and super funky and delicious Frida's margaritas. Their menu boasts a wide range of dishes, and there is definitely something for everyone's tastes. I also love the fact that their menu is so versatile - you can come here for margaritas and some snacks, or have a three course meal, or just order a three lots of their famous fried chicken and you will be set for the night! Speaking of fried chicken, my favourite dish on Mexico's menu is, and always will be, the Mexico Fried Chicken. It is spicy, served with the perfect sauces (chipotle mayo and jalapeno mayo) and I guarantee you will be licking your fingers. I even ordered it for my birthday buffet lunch last year, check it out on my blog. Last week, Mexico launched their new Autumn menu. It is full of earthy local produce, like beetroot, celeriac, butternut pumpkin and black plums, plus there are brand new tacos, snacks, specialties and salads. Mexico has also taken note of fan's requests to have more vegan and gluten free menu items, so they have added three new dishes with the Guajillo Mushroom Taco, Pan Roasted Cauliflower Taco and Crispy Chickpea and Pumpkin Salad. And for all you margarita lovers, there are new Frida's Margaritas flavours! I'm eyeing up the Pineapple and Cracked Pepper and the Raspberry and Elderflower. If you want something without alcohol, there are also two new sugar-free sodas to choose from - Classic Lemonade and Turmeric and Ginger Tonic. I visited Mexico in Britomart on two occasions to check out their new menu - for a weekday lunch, then lunch on Saturday. Starting with drinks, I LOVE their new Raspberry and Elderflower Margarita. I have had it twice because it is divine... refreshing, sweet, and the perfect accompaniment to the spicy dishes. Also, the Mango and Passionfruit Margarita went down a treat too. And for a great non-alcoholic option, we recommend their Turmeric and Ginger Tonic Soda. Delicious! For snacks, we loved their new Beetroot Hummus Dip, served with cricket tortillas. Super crunchy tortillas, which I enjoyed. On the second occasion, we tried the dip with fresh tortillas, which were equally as good. Another highlight were the Croquetas, filled with potato and smoky queso (cheese), green onion, candied almonds and remoulade. These were melt in your mouth! Along with their lip smacking Fried Chicken, Mexico are also known for their tacos. On the first occasion, I enjoyed the Beef Carnita Taco, with white sesame, chipotle, coriander, crispy ginger and Baja Fish Taco, with red slaw, mayonnaise, chili and coriander (not pictured). Second time, I tried one of Mexico's new tacos - the Pan Roasted Cauliflower Taco... it is vegan! While I loved the colours, I found it strange... having not had cauliflower in a taco before! It was also too spicy for me. Thank goodness for the margaritas! Continuing with the vegetarian dishes, we also tried their new Crispy Chickpea and Pumpkin Salad with cucumber, lime & chipotle dressing and candied sesame. It didn't scream Mexico to me, but it was tasty nonetheless and had wonderful textures. Like the Croquetas, another highlight were the Chimichangas, which are essentially deep fried burritos. At Mexico, these are bite sized and are filled with fried mushroom, leek, chili, queso and cactus and served with a salsa asada - beware it is hot! I had never tried Chimichangas before, so this was a joy to eat. Perfectly fried, flavoursome and we could have ordered seconds...or thirds! And now, for my second love (after the Fried Chicken) - Quesadillas. This delicious morsel is basically a tortilla filled with cheese and heated. However, you can add any fillings you like. Mexico does a great vegetarian one - Portobello Mushroom, with spinach, smoky queso and chili, served with a blackened onion crema. And, my oh my, that crema! They also have two other options - Chicken in Mole Amarillo and Coffee Agave Lamb, which sound divine, so much so, I will have to come back and try them both! Aside from the food, another reason why Mexico is one of my favourite eateries is the decor. Having being a fan of Mexican sugar skulls (and skulls in general) for a very long time, whenever I walk into Mexico, I feel right at home. The colourful walls are covered in memorabilia from Mexico, including artworks of Frida Kahlo and influences from Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), plus loads of cacti. It is definitely one of the most fun restaurants to visit in Auckland! If you are not able to get to Mexico in Britomart, there are four other locations in Auckland - Ponsonby, Ellerslie, Takapuna and most recently, Sylvia Park. This is probably the best Mexican in the Southern hemisphere. First understand how much I love Mexican food - I traveled to Mexico simply for the food. So yes, I am a frantic! And so when I tell you this place is awesome I mean it. Now you have to understand this is Mexican inspired. So you won't find your typical Mexican dishes here - yes, sadly no nachos or tacos. But every dish here is amazing. The quadrilles were amazing, we ordered the lamb and it was fantastic. Also try the ceviches with watermelon, you won't regret it. To the strawberry on top of this chilli Mexican cake, is that have amazing cocktails. We were drinking all night long! Let's just say when coming to New Zealand, make sure you stop off here! This is not Mexican food. It's an overpriced smorgasbord of ingredients that tastes somewhat inventive, but is definitely not Mexican food and ultimately falls short. On the plus side, the atmosphere is great. Colorful and quirky, the walls crammed with portraits and photos and all manner of Mexican-y things like lucha libre figurines, Day of the Dead paintings, and even a Mayan wall hanging that was identical to the one we picked up outside of Cabo years ago. Excellent drinks list -- we had the lychee margarita (sweet and yummy) and the sparkling sangria (cool and refreshing). They have a few different varieties of Mexican beer (Modelo, Corona, etc) and a few wines to choose from. Food-wise, I had the vegetarian enchilada (with mushroom, potato, and spiced pumpkin seeds) and found it pretty blah. The portion size was also tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiny for the price ($16). I think it was intended to feed a small Mexican bird. Also note -- none of the menu items are listed as vegan, but they can make a couple of the menu items vegan for you on request. My parents both had the carne asada quesadillas and they were barely recognizable as quesadillas -- couldn't see any cheese on there at all. Queso-less quesadillas, maybe? Again, the consensus was -- overpriced and uninspiring. When you're from Texas and have lived in this part of the world (Australia/NZ) for the past 5 years, you quickly learn that good and authentic Mexican food is non-existent in this part of the world, and that chefs are just coming up with their own quirky takes on what they think Mexican food SHOULD taste like. Which usually misses the mark, sadly. This place is just another example of that. Again, I don't really mind if food here is called "Mexican" even if it's not, as long as the food is really good -- but the problem is, most of the time the food falls short. As other reviewers have mentioned - portions are small - good for the waistline but not for my husband. The deserts were very hit and miss. Cookie with ice cream was 2 plate sized dry cookies with a small tablespoon of ice cream - largely left untouched by those that ordered it. As a big supporter of taco Tuesday I wanted to try out this Mexican restaurant. While looking over the menu I couldn't help but stray off and not stick with the traditional taco but instead try the Mexican fried chicken: I read it was the best fried chicken that someone had tasted and being from South Carolina I HAD to try the fried chicken- I was not disappointed! The chicken was so crispy while still being tender. The perfect amount of spice and two different sauces to try (one spicy and the other a green cilantro sauce) Another hands down favorite was the melon and mint margarita. After years of stagnation, Mexico is part of the revitalisation of Auckland's downtown area - full of colour, life and noise, the restaurant is almost exclusively packed to the rafters. This popular hotspot is often standing room only by 6.30pm, so make sure you get in early to secure a table - bookings are not taken but you can put your name on a waitlist at the door. Mexico Restaurant is famed for its contemporary Mexican fare - my favourites are the DIY guacamole and soft shell tacos with wild mushroom, fennel and marjoram, sour cream and toasted pinenuts . I also recommend the Quinoa salad, which comes with, wild rice, green beans, grilled zucchini and mustard greens. The best and most satisfying Mexican experience I've ever had in Auckland. Without a doubt. I'd heard it was brilliant but having been to Tijuana recently and had 'real' Mexican food, I had had my doubts, but I was pleasantly surprised. The decor of the restaurant was fantastic. Brightly painted skulls, flowers on every table, Frida Carlo artwork, lights hanging in jars from the roof, staff with great floral headpieces and a mouth-watering menu - there really was nothing average about Mexico. Prices are incredibly reasonable, with soft shell tacos only $6 each and quesadillas big enough for two only costing $15. As a group of four we shared three tacos, two quesadillas, salsa and corn chips, the most amazingly delicious fried chicken AND had pitchers of margaritas all for $25 each! Our food arrived so quickly we'd hardly had time to get excited about it before it was in front of us. Stellar service, and another bonus was the staff all seemed genuinely happy to be there. Mexico is the perfect place to have lunch and enjoy the Summer sun, or alternatively a great place to kickstart a night out on the town. Just one word of advice; the green hot sauce is crazy hot. LOVE it here - the brightly coloured walls chocca with Mexican inspired artwork, the fresh-faced waitresses wearing oversized flower headbands and the flavour-packed (yet affordable) food and the vibrant and lively atmosphere. The menu at Mexico changes almost every month but current fav is definitely the lamb, pumpkin, guajillo soup with quinoa and tortilla. So warming with the perfect chilli hit. Plus I love the liberal sprinkling of crunchy fried tortilla strips on the top. Not to mention it's rather filling - enough for a light lunch, which at $12 is a steal! (Note. big eaters will definitely need to order a cheeky taco or two as well...) The staff were very helpful even with a busy restaurant and helped offset the lack of quality grub. I found the quesadillas to be lacking a key ingredient called cheese. It was mostly this chicken paste that was lacking in flavor. The tacos went a bit overboard with flavoring. Mexican food is supposed to be simple in concept and they should stick with that where ever possible. This was my second time coming here and my last when it comes to food. If you want a light meal with a side of margaritas then this is the place for you. However if you are a fan or actual Mexican food then I would suggest you look to Little Mexico or Dos Amigos. The Tapas style menu is very good however and I very much enjoyed the Chorizo and Octopus skewers. Calling it a Mexican restaurant is a little bit of a stretch though and the wait for a table (even one that was booked) was close to an hour. It is so easy to fall in love with this place...if you manage to get through the door that is! The waiting times here are the worst I have seen in the world (yes the world) they send you away for an hour and two then you still have to wait some more. Book in advance if you can. The staff at the door are super rude. The joy killers. I havn't tried to get into other branches apart from the one in Britomart. Moving along, the food isn't authentic mexican despite the name. There is definitly a mexican element to it but that is as far as it goes. Having said that, the fried chicken is to die a thousand times for. The churros are great too. This place is all kinds of popular - and that popularity is showing no signs of dampening. Now this means it can be a bit of a wait for a table. Staff do their best with running a waiting list, and they'll contact you when a table is available. On my most recent visit, the wait time was a great deal longer than initially informed (unfortunately). Finally our table did become available - and what happened next, was excellent customer service. We had our faith restored in hospitality, when our waitress informed us that our first round of drinks would be free. Delicious sangria was served, and our starters arrived promptly. Particularly memorable items from the menu were - the fried chicken, the lamb quesadillas, prawn tacos and the churros (shared at our table, as we couldn't resist something sweet). Notable mention also to the three cheese quesadilla. Getting small items to share from the menu, works out to be quite reasonable once divided among friends. Went to Mexico on a Sunday afternoon. The place was not packed yet so we got a table right away. The food tasted very good, but we made a huge mistake: when we enter the restaurant we were VERY hungry. This is not the type of restaurant for VERY hungry people. After sharing one meal and taking both one main, we went to the supermarket and bought some sushi as we felt we would need it afterwards... I feel this IS the place to be if you want to have an evening or a night with drinks and some food, but not if you are trying to calm down your hungry feelings... We will definitely think we will give it another try, one day when we have eaten beforehand. Preface this by admitting I just moved to Auckland from San Francisco, so my standards are pretty high. I was hoping to love this place - it's super close to my apartment, its a top 50 restaurant, and I love Mexican food. Sadly, it didn't live up to the hype. The atmosphere was nice, and the waitstaff were lovely. The chips and salsa were just meh, as were the chicken and fish tacos. The margaritas were weak and just ok. The potato/corn fritter appetizer. were pretty yummy - simultaneously crispy and soft and tasty. They were even better dipped in the salsa. The highlight was the dessert - we got the poached pear and rhubarb with coconut creme and puffed wild rice. My coworker wanted to go out for dinner, but couldn't decide on which cuisine. His wife didn't want pizza, I already at Thai, so we decided on Mexican. We decided on Mexico because the ambiance was much better than MexiCalis, and the reviews were good. We started with the BBQ pork belly taco* (AMAZING), 3 cheese quesadilla (more AMAZING), followed by tinga rabbit and slaw (delish), pumpkin empañada (more delish), then ending with a deconstructed vanilla cheesecake, vanilla orange custard*, and the spice cake with ice cream and mint (not great). All in all, it was a good dinner. Eh. i think this place is quite hyped up. I've been to a few Mexico Restaurants (Takapuna, Ellerslie, Ponsonby) and my favourite so far is probably Ellerslie because i like the design of the outdoor seating area. The only dish i really look forward to is the FRIED CHICKEN... so flavoursome and juicy and to top it all off there's mayo that goes with it. I usually order their soft tacos (pork, beef, eggplant, chicken, prawn, you name it. oh usually not at once... usually..) and quesadillas (corn, fish, chicken, again not all at once haha).. however they are just ok to me. nothing that exciting. I think after having this other AMAZING beef taco in Ellerslie just ruined every other taco for me now hahah I go here to mingle with friends, sip on sangria/margaritas and nibble on food. I had high expectations for my first Mexican experience in NZ, especially being part of the Mexican revolution has that has been sweeping Melbourne. No guide dog so that was not an issue with this experience. As with all Mexican I started with Guacamole and house made tortillas. The tortillas were beautiful, but for me that's where it ended. The Guac was salty, and I mean to say, I love my salt, but even for me, it was salty. It could have been green play dough with salt on it, and I would not have known the difference. Mains, no this is where the meal had the chance to improve, and It did save itself from getting 1 star. Speaking of stars, the star of the evening was the fried chicken. Not sure how anyone could mess this up, but it was mostly moist and delicious. (There were a few overcooked and chewy pieces) It was partnered with chipotle mayo which was well balanced, and complimented the dish perfectly. I also had 2 of the soft shell taco's, the Beef Skirt w whipped garlic, grape, apple and smoky almond and also the BBQ pork pibil in achiote, picadillo of pineapple & peanut cream. Both dishes sounded amazing to read, and had my mouth watering, but as I mentioned before, the star was the chicken, meaning that these tacos did not live up to their fancy names. They lacked passion and flavour. No balance and overall very bland tasting. I also got the chance to try Chicken mole de xocolate, this had some nice flavours, but tasted a little dated, not the fresh and vibrant Mexican that screams it origins, more subtle, hunched against a wall, covered by a sombrero kind of flavour. read more

I went to Mexico before going to the airport to catch my flight home. We'd not left quite as much time as we should have, and explained to the staff that we'd need to eat quickly. The food arrived literally minutes after ordering, which meant I was able to savour the amazing spread rather than wolf it down. The Mexican fried chicken should be on everyone's list, the flavour in that crumb is indescribable, sooo good. The guacamole was fantastic, packed full of flavour and with a good serving of chips. We shared a few enchiladas, which were out of this world, and some delectable prawns. Topped of with some Mexican beer, it was a fantastic last meal in NZ. Turns out they'd made a mistake processing one of the payments (since we had split the check between us all) which is understandable but really unacceptable that instead of apologising and trying to figure it out from the start, the restaurant refused to consider the fault was on their part and spent 40 minutes making us feel like we were trying to rip them off, with the 14 of us standing outside in the cold or taking up precious space inside. It wasn't until we'd actually left them a contact number and gone home that they called and said they'd looked back over their transactions and found it was indeed their mistake. The walls are decked out and the dark dining room lit with candles has an eery cinco de mayo junk shop vibe. The tables are chairs remind me of primary school. I'd heard a few rumors that the waitresses here can be a little frosty and unfortunately that rumor was true during my experience. Good service doesn't necessarily mean you have to totally kiss the asses of the patrons, it just means that you should have a smile on your face and look like you're actually enjoying your job (even if you're not really). We ordered a bunch of tacos each, a vegetarian quesedilla to share, a salad and tostaditas and they were all fantastic. You can tell a lot of thought is put into individual ingredients as well as the combinations and it really pays off. We also decided to give the desserts a try.. a bit of a hit or miss there but I think they're worth ordering just because you won't find anything like them anywhere else, at least not in the CBD area. The place itself is incredibly photogenic and has already been Instagramed to death and the bathroom also doubles as a shrine to Frida Kahlo. Unfortunately during our visit the table next to us was occupied by a pretty rowdy group of office types.. I noticed a couple of empty sangria jugs on their table so there's your culprit. Lots of swearing and loud discussions of pretty vulgar topics.. it never hurts to be mindful that there are people around you trying to enjoy a meal when choosing to talk in public about your embarrassing Saturday night. if you are coming from somewhere where there is a lot of mexican food...such as the USA then I think you would be quite disappointed. They dont have hearty mexican meals... which is what I am use to. The tacos are a complete rip off...they are tiny. It is basically 2 bites and you are done. The fish taco was $8.... for two bites that is a bit steep to say the least. I would normally pay about $2 for something like this in the states. I do however like the atmosphere. And yeah theres not many places to eat Mexican in Auckland so I guess its like your paying for something rare. But I wouldnt go there hungry because it will cost you an arm and a leg to fill up. read more

I love mexican food. I have been to Mexico in Auckland CBD and Hamilton CBD as well, on a couple of occasions with friends and family. Good food, unique menu, a very dark and interesting ambience, friendly staff. I recommend everyone should visit the place, if you enjoy mexican food and exploring new eat-outs. read more

I'll start off by saying that most of the lower reviews for Mexico on here have come from Americans - and that is totally understandable. Mexican food in America is amazing. There just isn't that much of it around Auckland, unfortunately, and what there is around tends to be boutique-y, which is just what this place is. (On the other hand, we have Indian restaurants a-plenty here, which tend to be few and far between in the States and tend to be boutique-y in the way that Mexican restaurants are here.) So this place is definitely up there for Mexican-style food in Auckland. The first time I came here I thought it was slightly bland and a bit average, albeit with excellent decor, atmosphere, and cocktails (tamarind margarita was awesome). Second time I was much more impressed. Bean dip was good, tacos were interesting and really good. Interesting flavours in small portions and reasonably priced (for this kind of place in Britomart). If you want a killer burrito, wander up to High Street to Jalapeños (walk straight past California Burrito Kitchen, IMHO) and get a massive burrito, full of beans, for cheap. If you want a Britomart-style Mexican experience, this place is fun and the food is tasty. read more
