Mexico 2000 was an experience on so many levels. The restaurant is a pretty spacious resturant and in this time of Covid, all steps are being taken to make the customers feel safe; I did. Now back to the experience. Mexico 2000 gets an A+ for their food. I'd give an A+ for the drinks anf another A+ for the authentic Mexican astetic of art and other traditional touches throughout the resturant. Unfortunately, I only have a C+ for the service. Sadly, my bestie and I waited, not to be seated but for our dining experience to get underway. I arrived first and had to ask the waiter three times for lemon to add to my water. Additionally, when my friend did arrive, we seemed to be waiting an unusually long time to get our food. Perhaps it was because the food was made to order? I'm not sure but it was a bit much. Yikes! Luckily the food was fantastic and the portions were more than enough. Don't get me wrong, the waiter we had was friendly and all but he seemed to be distracted and as a result, he was unable to get an A+ from me. I'm not a snop but having to ask three times for something is not the best customer service. The truth of the matter is, I plan to return for all the reasons I have given an A+. Yeh, love this place. Located in the back of a bodega with enough seating for 8 people, this is my favorite plate of chilaquiles and my favorite bowl of posole in NYC . They use to have amazing Barbacoa on weekends but I think they changed Vendors and I like it less. Mom and pop owned, they are so sweet. I really don't want to tell other people about this place because it is currently a hole in the wall and have amazing food for cheap. To be blunt, I want it for myself but of course I have to write a review of how amazing this place is. The food is so delicious and have a good amount of portion. If this place was close to my house I would be here all the time. If you see this place from the outside, it pretty much looks like a Mexican grocery store, but don't be fooled because when you walk inside your greeted by the wonderful aroma of food. There are four tables that can sit about eight people, like I said hole in the wall but I don't care. I love eating out for the food, not the ambiance. Guacamole is on point. The chicken enchilada, I got the mole poblano is so good! The burrito is humongous and again so so good! The flavor is just right, not too salty and seasoned just right. Comes with three chicken enchiladas (in green sauce with some melted cheese on top), excellent side of rice and beans - very traditional - and a bit of salsa fresca and guacamole. Everything was exactly as I am used to from San Diego and friends' parents/grandparents homemade cooking. There are four small tables total paired off creating two large tables of four seats together. Prices were extremely reasonable and very friendly service. This place is great. I'd doubly recommend it if you want to catch a little of the world cup in an authentic atmosphere. There are just a few tables in the back so there isn't too much room. The food is fantastic. It's not at all like most of the fancy "mexican food" that you'll find around NYC. It's much more like the mexican food that you'll find in the southwest. I definitely prefer the hole in the wall grocery store to their newer restaurant, something about it just feels more genuine, tho I'm happy they're doing well, because they should be. What do I get from here? Poblano mole paste, which I then prepare at home with chicken and rice (always a jaw dropper with friends). I buy epazote from here, a typical herb used for many Mexican dishes, and it's usually hard to find at other super markets. I also love this champurrado, it's norteño/Mexico city style with milk, and soooo delicious. And the food, anything you get, will be real good! Highly recommend this place!! read more

I was expecting good California style Mexican food and instead it was one of those spots that is authentic Brooklyn bodega Mexican. I ordered a chorizo burrito to stay and when I took a bite I realized that it was filled with only chorizo and sliced cooked carrots --- no rice, no beans and I had to eat it with a fork and knife because the sour cream was on the outside. If you are going to stuff a burrito full of cooked carrots it should at least be mentioned on the menu and then you should change that menu and stop putting cooked carrots in your burritos. read more

So often I meet people who have moved from the west coast, and while they love the city, they bemoan the lack of decent Mexican food. I always point them to Mexico 2000. The food is rich, authentic, and always cooked with the freshest ingredients. It's straight Mexican, no fancy hybrid. They make their own tamales on the weekends, and everything is amazing. I lived on South 5th for 4 years, and ate everything there was to offer in Williamsburg. And that was the Williamsburg food prime, between 2004 and 2011. Today, I returned to Brooklyn for the first time in a few months, and Mexico 2000 was the place I went--its that good. Turns out, they're expanding! I love how it's family owned, and opened relatively late (I've made midnight stops). I've been a customer for over 15 years, took a 4 year college break in between, and during my first visit back the family was welcoming, kind, and attentive. Yeap! They did it again. I needed something mellow on the tummy after lingering Indian food from friday. I asked which soups they had, although the Goat sounded incredible, I opted for the Posole that brings a 'caldo Blanco'. My partner ordered Huevos con Chorizo which comes with perfectly cooked Spanish Rice and stewed beans (with chunks of whole garlic and onion freshly cooked this morning), she wished she had ordered refried. We split some Guacamole that we ate with the hot white corn tortillas that was perfectly creamy and delicious. Immediately after ordering the posole, they brought two plain enchiladas (red bean with iceberg lettuce, queso crema y cotija. "Y esos?!", I asked not having ordered them. She simply replied, "vienen con el Posole." I crunched into one and drifted to the simple black bean tostadas I had originally been introduced to with shredded cabbage, egg and cotija - 18 years ago at a small rural market in the hinterlands of the Oaxacan mountains. While these paled in comparison, they were in front of me and all that queso crema and cotija with refried reds couldn't be All that Bad. 2 minutes later, the Posole came out in a massive, deep bowl with fresh herbs floating in the clear broth. The Homine was huge, the size of quarters, large puffed white corn relative. Soooo good. A couple pork chunks brought little morsels of fat, which I may have eaten had I not had the 2 tostadas with all the queso and crema.. Wow. So stuffed. As usual I was fascinated by the nopales, epazote, various chilis, tomatillos, cebollin, radishes and countless other ingredients along the side of the store, but so utterly stuffed that I couldn't even begin to contemplate some grocery shopping. read more

To girls were sitting at the table by the tv enjoying a mind blowing amazing looking dish, a practically cornucopic pile of mexican treats. I was so jealous I approached the counter guy expecting him to have to repeat some strange and melodic word... "pssst, hey buddy, what are those two girls eating" "oh, the Taco Salad?" Considering the rapturous reviews, central location and great weather, I was surprised to be the only person at Mexico 2000 for an over an hour as I ate lunch and did some speed reading ahead of a book club meeting. Without people and with some slightly too loud ranchera playing, the atmosphere was a little lacking. This is also a place where the table comes with empty Stella goblets, guacamole bowls and menus when you arrive. It's overly fussy and no one removed this when I sat down. When the food started arriving, my two plates were crowded out by all of these present as part of a bizarre up-selling strategy. Although this is a Mexican restaurant underneath a subway line that is attached a bodega. No one comes here for the atmosphere. It's for the food. Chips and salsa at the beginning of the meal disappoint with cold chips and even colder salsa. There's no kick at all to the sauce and chips are definitely not made on site. Things perk up from there, with a massive $5 quesadilla al pastor. The crema is spread throughout the shell and there's plenty of cheese, pork and pineapple. I also ordered a chorizo taco, which was completely unnecessary. I only made it through a couple of bites, but this wasn't because of the quality of the food. I was charged $2.50 as opposed to the menu price of $2 for each of my two Diet Cokes. I thought about not mentioning this because of the small amount, but I'm glad I did. The error was immediately corrected (and the difference added on to the tip) with a smile. It was a nice detail, just like when I left, the manager thanked me for stopping in. NO. if you have ever been to Los Hernandes tortilla factory in Bushwick this is NOT even close to a fair comparison. I ate here twice. first time i had the cheese quesadilla which was just a greeeasy tortilla with blobs of cheese, shredded iceberg lettuce and shredded cheese on top of it. at Los Hernandes vegetarians get tomatoes and delicious avocados--an actual MEAL. after reading the positive Yelp reviews i went back today to give it a second chance and i had the huevos rancheros and i must say that i've had better and cheaper huevos rancheros IN MANHATTAN. {Cabana Cafe on Thompson--go there!} NO LOVE FROM THE VEGETARIANS. I ordered Lunch Special 3: Tostada, Soft Taco, Rice and Beans. The beans are a bit soupy and really good. Rice is that moist crumbly type which is the best. Taco was 2 corn tortillas, that white Mexican cheese, lettuce, etc. Red and green hot sauce on table. I travel the U.S as a consultant and have had my share of Mexican cuisine around the country. This restaurant has several items that are very delicious. Today I had the pork tamale and the carnitas taco. Delicious, fresh, and the perfect portion. The salsa is also fresh and satisfying. The staff is very welcoming. Hard to complain about a place that serves some of the best Mexican food in Williamsburg, delivers it free from 15+ blocks away, and costs less than $10 for a full meal (which is usually big enough for me to have dinner + leftovers for lunch). I get the enchiladas suizas meal every time, plus a taco or two and that's plenty for a dinner + leftovers. The chicken tacos are good, and they serve them either Mexican street style (cilantro + onion), "American style" (lettuce, cheese, sour cream) or any way you want (add whatever, they really don't care and don't charge you an unreasonable amount to customize). I've never had a bad meal from here, so it's very consistent. It's not much for razzle dazzle but it's good, simple Mexican food that's hard to find in New York. I'm from California so it's not necessarily comparable to the "best" Mexican food I've ever eaten, but it's damn good by NYC standards at half the price of most NYC spots. read more

I haven't eaten the food here yet, but I utilize the grocery any time I happen to be free and the M runs through my part of town. (which is actually a special treat unto itself.) Its a great place to pick up those cans of chipotles, dried peppers, sack of epazote, giant bag of tomatillos for that favorite recipe of yours. They actually special ordered me a tortilla press, something that was surprisingly hard for me to find in Brooklyn. Great stuff. The staff are super friendly and quite enthusiastic when you ask about some rare ingredient that you need. My housemates tend to sing the chorus "when are you going back to Mexico 2000?" when they want more salsa, tacos, etc. I guess it will be this weekend if the M decides to run it's rush-hour route on Presidents Day. read more

Don't see what the big fuss is over their food. Yes it's quick, yes it's cheap (though no cheaper than similar places in the surrounding neighborhood), but it's merits end there. The meat in the tacos wasn't particularly flavorful and was of a chewy consistency. This makes me question the freshness of the ingredients. So stop hyping it up to your friends especially those from California because your just making yourself look more like a joke when you are trying to convince them that there is good Mexican food in the city. If you like authentic mexican then check out Mexico 2000. More of a legit mexican bodega with a food spot in the back than Matamoros.
