My boyfriend introduced me to MexiCali last year and we've been regulars ever since! :) Small and quaint, maybe 15 tables and a friendly smile at the cashier greeting us. Then I saw the heavens open up and really, the only thing that matters, besides tacos ... the SALSA BAR! :)
He got the carne asada burrito, as usual :p and I got a crunchy ground beef taco, al pastor and classic asada street tacos with a side of rice. We split a drink and were were set for just under $15. Not bad.
We decided to have the delicious Mexican style rice and tamrind drinks they offer (think orange julius with the machines that constantly ran the drinks like a waterfall) in a convenient soda dispenser type machine now, and it was good. Like a sweetened rice mile, more a native drink and something I like on the way out. We had some water and then a pepsi. Ah, soda.
The salsa bar offers it all! Green medium, taco sauce mild, habanero HOT, pico de gallo, fresh jalapenos, and even the signature ranch with a little kick of salsa is available by the scoop for you, for me! :) The roasted salsa is a favorite and I love the charred bits of peppers and watching all the friendly employees fire them up on the grill before turning them into future dipping delights! OK, look. Here's what's up with the salsa bar. You have to make sure you taste them before you just pour them all over your food, because lets face it, tempature matters and sometimes it gets busy and employees forget ... or whatever, but I've had a few times where the pico de gallo and bottled sauce, specifically, have been RANK. I mean... so bad. I love salsa with rice, so I caught it both times before my tacos were ruined, and the rice can just be scooped out, so it was all good. I let them know and they were nice and apologetic about it. What more can I ask? A free chocotaco? Sure, but not a deal breaker! ;) So, yeah. Onward.
My handsome date was all smiles as the tender steak pieces, smothered in sour cream and guacamole, the rice and beans fighting for the top and of course the salsa took over. He's partial to the green sauce, which has a nice spice to it, with fresh onions and cilantro. Some days have a bigger kick than others, but we'll take it! The burrito is enough to fill this guy up for HOURS and he's never had any gristly gross bits. Great, fresh off the grill taste and I often sneak a bite or two or three or nine. What?! With free drink refills, I may or may not have another bite ...
The tacos are legit. These are my favorite crunchy ground beef tacos within a 5 miles radius. The meat is never greasy and the shell, though not homemade, never gets soft or soggy. The taste is never comprmised and the flavor is slow and low with cumin, chili powder and other classic flavors one expects in a classic ground beef crunchy shell taco. These taste like every Mexican family I know!
they have a bathroom, but it's a pain in the arse to use it! You have to get a key and exit the side door, walk along the drive through lane to the back of the restaurant and it's small and dark and weird. BUT. I was so glad it was there. Just be warned, it's a bit tricky to get to. read more
