As our closest local surgery, Mews became our first stop in 2000 for our Shih Tzu dog. She was naturally healthy throughout her life, so we rarely visited the vets and so were not largely familiar. After 10 years, she began to deteriorate, and so we visited Mews, who diagnosed an abscess in her mouth, drained it, and then sent her home. Unfortunately, she got no better. After another two drains and about 8 visits in a single month (charging us considerably each time, despite no more than a poke in her mouth for a few minutes on every occasion and nothing more), the vets continued to say it was an abscess which was healing. The bills slashed out savings, and after another unsuccessful visit, we stopped at another local vet on the way home for a belated second opinion. Within moments of being seen, this vet had examined her (mouth and all) and took a blood sample. It was the colour and consistency of treacle. Our dog had suffered with a cancer that (with little observation) could be detected by professionals. Instead, Mews had insisted that no further treatment or check was needed, as they had definitely removed the cause of pain. With the state of our dog's blood and the sickening smell that oozed from the needle opening, the second opinion vet explained that it was best to put her down as the cancer was far too developed. Had her state of illness been revealed earlier, our dog could have been saved weeks of suffering and distress from numerous vet visits and anaesthetics (not easy on an older dog, or on the wallet).
I am sad to say that I would not recommend a visit to this centre, and to consider getting a second opinion if you are even slightly unsure of the well-being of your pet. Our Shih Tzu was put down the day after we learned of her advanced cancer, and by the second vet. This he did free of charge due to our receipts from Mews revealing the extent of our investment in the health of our dog which was squandered. Our guilt in not being able to assist our dog earlier led to us not wanting another dog at all. However, two years on we decided to adopt two more dogs, and be more selective of who we trust them with. For the past three years, we have been taking our two new dogs to the vet who correctly diagnosed and euthanised our Shih Tzu and have never looked back.
Please do be careful. I'm sure there are many people who have positive experiences here, but if you are concerned, it is not wrong to follow-up with another vet. It is your pets' health and happiness which isn't to be sacrificed. read more
