there were a few important things i was looking for in a gym upon moving to champaign…read more 1. it was not filled with u of i students. 2. it had to have the classes i love to take (ie pilates, yoga, spinning etc). 3. it had to be close to my house. 4. it had to be reasonably priced. voila! i found it! it's called the mettler center. it's not your "typical" gym because a majority of what goes on here is physical therapy. so, yeah, i may bring down the average age to about 45, but hey, i love it. similarly, you can get some killer massages here (and 10% off for members. score). i love working out at this place for many reasons. first, i am not intimidated to use any of the cardio machines/free weights/other machines because there are no overly-muscled, steroid-using men giving me the stink eye. second, because i love the instructors i have for my classes (emily, don and rhonda get specific shoutouts). third, i can go at any time of day and get on any machine that i want to use (all that have tv's up front to tune into). fourth, they have just about anything machine-wise or accessory-wise in a gym you could ever ask for. fifth, they have cooking classes that so far have been quite interesting and useful in expanding my cuisine. sixth, the staff in general are always extremely useful and will help me with anything i need. seventh, well, i could go on but i'll stop the list now... anywho, the only thing i wish differently upon my mettler center is that they have a pool and larger locker rooms... and i only know the price for a monthly membership, which is $54/month with a $75 joining fee. since i'm in a joint membership, my price is $35/month (boy's is $54). with the membership comes the use of the workout area, free workout classes (with a couple exceptions), discounts on massages and cooking classes, 4 free personal trainer meetings, and again, the list goes on....

I actually don't know how many stars to give Mettler. I like (soon to be past tense) going there…read morebut it will all change come January 1st. Starting that day there will be no more classes and no more memberships. If you want to use the facilities, you have to book with a personal trainer at $55 per month. No more Silver Sneakers for seniors. There are members who have been taking classes there forever and who have been working out there forever. Mettler claims to love them all and appreciate them and yet this change. The focus is to better serve the community but I can't understand how that is achieved by eliminating programs and memberships. Mettler was a great place to workout. The atmosphere was relaxed. Most of the people there at the time when I went were seniors like I am; some in better shape than I and some in worse. The lounge area provided opportunities to visit and meet new people. People could leave personal items, even car keys, in the lounge's open cubbyholes without concern. I'm a proponent of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," and by all appearances Mettler was not broken. Maybe it's because all the freebie Silver Sneakers were depriving Mettler of revenue. Letters with corporate jargon and platitudes offer explanations but I can't help but think it's a purely financial move. So, for Mettler Past I give 5 stars but to Mettler Future only 1.

While I haven't been a patient of Dr Hsu's for almost two years, now, and ohhhh how deeply I miss…read moreher!, I felt that I needed to come here and write a review for her for the following reasons: 1) She deserves it! And I'm shocked to see that I'm the first person to review her! Good gracious, Dr Hsu is like... she's like the kind of doctor you pray you'll find. Warm, compassionate, understanding. She listens like no other. She spends time with her patients, doesn't rush them, takes thorough notes, thorough histories, and sets comprehensive plans! If you're not seeing Dr. Hsu, the only question you need to ask yourself (besides, "Did I fall on my head?") is, "Why not??!" 2) Having moved to Texas, I am deeply pained by how difficult it is to find an excellent GP. These doctors have more mood swings than all the cast for the entirety of the TV show Dallas! And that's saying... A LOT! What I wouldn't give for a doctor like Dr Hsu. What I wouldn't give for half a doctor like Dr. Hsu! Whether it's the bottom or the top, she's still running circles around these fools. =P 3) I don't know if I expressed it clearly enough, how much I appreciated her as my primary, before we moved away. For months after we left, she continued to prescribe a certain medication for me, a med that was difficult to find the right doctors for. Even though I'm sure it put her in a bit of a spot, she did it without hesitation or complaint. She did it because she wanted me to be okay. Because, as her patient, I came first. It's more than just an oath with Dr Hsu... which isn't to say that that's not enough or important to her, but it's just...she's more giving than she probably should be. That's no weakness, trust me. It's just that she's such an amazing person, it's really hard to put it all into words. If I had two hands full of sparklers, a line of fan dancers, an acoustic amphitheatre filled with rockin' classical, and a blimp overhead with a sign that read, "Dr. Jennie Hsu-Lumetta is the bestest doctor EVER," I still don't think I could do her justice. Sending her all my love from Austin!
