I was there at 9:00 am so still a bit early for a place that stays open until 3:00 am regularly! I took the waitresses recommendation and ordered the avocado toast. I added the fried poached egg out of curiosity. It was amazing! The toast had fresh tomatoes and seasoning. I have never had a fried poached egg... it was so expertly prepared, a real work of art and measure of culinary skill! I can't wait to return to try some other dishes

(and I didn't want to just do a cafe run). A friend reccomended this place and it was a couple of blocks away from where I am staying so I gave it a shot (bonus was that it's open at 0730 M-F, so for someone jet lagged, it was a great way to kill some time early in the morning) Got in and got seated (breakfast restaurants aren't really a thing in Norway, so it was empty when I arrived). Ordered the fried Brussels sprouts as a snack and the eggs, bacon and hash browns as a main w/ locally made sourdough bread from a local bakery on the side. The food was all presented well and tasted great. The hash browns were less shredded potatoes as puréed, then fried. (still tasted fine) and the eggs were scrambled perfectly with the bacon crisped up and sprinkled on top with some sprouts. The bread came lightly oiled and fried (so no need for butter). The Brussels sprouted were roasted with some peppers and served on top of some aioli. Service was great, food was great and will come back at least one more time before I leave town. Yes, it's pretty expensive (this all ran me ~$35 converting from NOK to USD) but Norway in general has a high cost of living, so this is on par with any other sit down meal in a comparable restaurant.

Though by the time I had received my food the place had filled up again with a line out the door. Liebling is a bit trendy, and has a cool shop attached with some retro items for sale. Which make for great gifts on the fly. Some of the tables in the shop are from old sewing machines, the seats could be from on old school. I ordered a Chai Tea Latte,` the chai was a bit spicy and lacking the sweetness that one expects when ordering this drink. It was also lacking a bit of love in the foam department. Overall, Chai Tea Latte was a swing and a miss in my book. The aftertaste the spices left burning my mouth and missing the sweetness was pretty distasteful. Onto the food, I ordered slice of bread served with hummus, lettuce and cucumbers which was very nicely put together. The hummus was amazing and left me longing for another bite, long after it was gone. I also ordered a slice of bread with avocado spread which was topped with lettuce and cherry tomatoes. This was spread was lack luster but I must say the bread, lettuce and tomato were quite fresh.

A little on the pricier side because you're paying for the view and location, but the meal was delicious and the service was wonderful. I had the hamburger, which came presented neatly on a wooden cutting board, with a cute fry-basket of french fries. The burger was a-ok, no complaints and no wonderful rave review. I also sampled the salmon and cheesy potatoes (a separate side dish not included with the salmon), both of which were tasty. The best thing, however, was the dessert. A chocolate mousse was plated beautifully on a slate board, and served with white chocolate and raspberry. So delicious! American Express is accepted here and free WiFi. Most of the time when you're in a city or a country that's much different than your own, you want to experience their food, but I was so intrigued but this concept that I had to check it out for myself. Sure enough, when I walked in I felt like I ended '50s America. This was a legit old-school diner, but with more wooden fixtures than the checkered patterns and plastic type seating that you may be thinking of. It still had the look and feel of a diner, but with a slightly more polished looked. The wait brought over the menu and a small glass of water. If nothing else, come here just to read the menu. It's hysterical. Small jokes within each menu item. I decided to get breakfast here so I got eggs, bacon, toast and French fries because the waiter didn't understand that I wanted home fries, but whatever. It's a potato so I ate it. The eggs were cooked exactly how I asked for them and the bacon was nice and crispy. Looking around, the milkshakes were passing me by constantly and these huge sandwiches. It really made me see how much we, as Americans consume. Their portions were out of this world big if you got a sandwich or something like that. My meal was just the right size, but as most things in Norway, it was expensive so I passed on the milkshake because I'm sure it was out of my budget. A fun experience none the less. I would take friends here the next time Im in town and if I was a local I'd probably be a regular here if I lived nearby.

I went because I wanted to see Norway's interpretation of a real American diner. It really wasn't bad, but I had to do a triple take when I got the bill. I'd want to try their great-looking breakfast menu, but don't want to go broke for American food on my vacation.

You should come here for THE best breakfast buffet in town!…read more I've had the breakfast here at Grilleriet during my last three stays at the Hotel Folketeateret next door (it's included in the room rate) and in fact the breakfast is the reason why I'm not bothering to try out any other hotels in Oslo - it's the most convincing argument...ever! What's so great about it? - Well, for one it is the sheer amount of variety that makes this breakfast buffet so good. - You could seriously walk up an appetite by simply strolling along it from one end to the other: there's many different kinds of breads - flat breads, rye breads, crunchy breads; then there's a plenty of different cheeses (I love the cumin-flavoured one) and also a nice assortment of cold cuts (such as hams & salamis). Then there's different kinds of smoked or marinated fish, coming with all sorts of condiments. The warm dishes should be mentioned as well: fried or scrambled eggs and a station where you can self-assemble your omelet . The obligatory bacon is there too, but also sausage, some sort of warm liver paté and...very randomly...a warm aubergine salad. The space itself is also fantastic: it's a vast room, but it feels so comfortable and cozy in there that I could hang out there forever. They have a nice mix of small, larger and huge communal tables. (I actually tend to spend my mornings here and set up my computer on one of the communal tables - the hustle and bustle makes my creative juices flow so nicely ;-) As for lunch and dinner, I cannot say much, but I was here with my Norwegian colleague the other day and she said that she had a terrific dinner here as well. Apparently they put chairs around the open kitchen bar and folks can thus watch the chefs preparing the food while eating and chatting. Go, Grilleriet, go!

It irks me because I make reservations specifically so I do not have to wait for a table. This place has no good waiting area either, so you just stand around like a fool trying not to get in anyone's way. Also, when we walked in, it was hard to breathe. I am not sure if the place always smells of oversmoked meats or if they had an issue the evening we were there, but wow, the smell was intense. I had gotten used to the smell by the time we were finally seated. Our server was a little slow, both with service and in the head, but he seemed to try his best with what he was given. All of the above is why I deducted a star, which should tell you how fricken awesome the food was since I typically rate a place quite low if the service wasn't up to par. Now onto the good part: The words that came out of my mouth after the first bite of my steak were something like "now I know why people spend so much money on good food." I am pretty sure I repeated this several times. It was the best steak I had ever had. It was cooked to perfection and so tender I cut through it like it was warm butter (cold butter is not easy to cut through). It is so good it forces you to eat slow because you dread the second that taste is not in your mouth. There were other things on my plate too. There was some type of glazed onion and some potato thing (yes, I am that fancy) and both were quite good, but seriously, don't waste your time with these extras if you get full fast like I do. There are not many places that have service that irks me that can make up for with their food, but Grilleriet definitely did. I would let them verbally abuse me if it meant I got to eat that steak again.
