But…read moreElias Mat & Sant is perfect if you're looking for classic, Norwegian food in a casual setting. I enjoyed my time here. Elias Mat & Sant is located in the sentrum, Oslo's city center, so is walking distance to many sites and attractions. I visited here after walking from the palace along Karl Johans Gate as the restaurant is located off this main drag. Make reservations here for the restaurant is small and intimate. It was time to try reindeer while in the Nordic region of the world, so here I did. I ordered the reindeer stew, which was delicious. The reindeer stew was similar to a beef stew, but the reindeer is leaner, so didn't taste as heavy, which is a good thing. Over some mashed potatoes with a gravy and herbs and a side of lingonberry, it completed the meal. It also came with a side of complimentary bread, which is not always the case at other restaurants. That was a nice bonus though because the bread helped soaked up the stew. Perfection!

They added a nice layer of sweet and tart. The places looks brand new, limited cocktails and only four craft beers on tap. Service was excellent, thanks to our server we knew to mix the berries. If you are in Oslo, call ahead and enjoy a great meal.

The Salmon was another seafood restaurant on our list of places to eat while in Oslo…read more It was located in Aker Brygge which was a newer and expensive neighborhood. There was both indoor and covered outdoor seating. We did not have a reservation but came early enough to snag an inside table. It was the right choice as the rain really started to come down about that time. One caveat was that we had to wrap up our meal within 1.5 hours which wasn't a problem for us. The menu was unique as it was printed inside a newspaper. One just had to flip pages to find the drink, food and dessert menus. Given the namesake of the restaurant we opted to try three different salmon preparations: Our favorite dish was the salmon tataki which was lightly grilled in a ponzu sauce. If it was larger then we would've gladly eaten this as a main dish. The grilled salmon came in second as it was perfectly cooked. The mashed potatoes were a great accompaniment, creamy with truffle flavors. Our least favorite was the hot smoked salmon and pasta salad. There was an unusual taste to the pasta salad that detracted from the salmon. Service was just ok and it took a long while before we could get any attention to close our check. While tipping wasn't expected in Norway, the Salmon's credit card terminals start with a tipping option screen before you can pay. If you're curious about salmon farming in Norway then check out the exhibit at the other end of the restaurant.

The Salmon does an excellent job of showcasing the fresh and wonderful quality of salmon in many different dishes. The tasting plate was one of the best dishes they had. There were three different pieces of salmon with different accompaniment. I don't remember the exact cuts, but one was Lox, and the other was a cold smoke. My guest got a ginger salmon salad she loved. We also got the torched salmon nigiri to taste. The hype is real! This is definitely a must try! They get extremely busy, so a reservation is a must! They had indoor and outdoor seating with a heated patio (it was a bit chilly when we were there).

But first you gotta climb the steep stair up to the main area where you are greeted by a bar-look-alike counter. On the board, you see the summary of the menu, food on the left and drinks on the right. For detailed menu, grab the menu on the counter. On the left you will find an area with table & chairs where you can sit down. We tried the Hummus & Falafel 163kr and Hummus & Chicken 173kr plates. You will get a plate of hummus and another plate of pita, corn chips, beets salad & few other condiments. The hummus are not bad, a little bland & dry for my taste, I do prefer it to be a little more garlicky. As for the falafel, again, it was OK with lack of flavor & not very crunchy outside. As for the roasted chicken, it was decent & can get a little dry when dip with the pita. That being said, for the price, it really fills you up and I really liked the ambiance. Remind me of a hippy hangout spot with arts, photos on the walls and few knick-knacks for decor.

I was a fan of Bit's brioche until today. A good brioche is made with plenty of eggs and butter…read more Bit's original brioche had this, which resulted in a soft, moist, buttery pastry. This gives the brioche its characteristic yellow color. It was perfect the way it was and is very close in texture to my own brioche. So today, as I was catching my train from Oslo Sentralstasjon, I decided to stop by and feed my brioche cravings. Much to my surprise, the brioche I remembered only from a couple of months ago was not the same. Instead the brioche tasted like a normal "skoleboller." The brioche was like bread being a bit dry and lacking in egg and butter. It was also very apparent after biting into the brioche and having to chew a number of times, unlike before the brioche would melt in your mouth. The custard was fine, but the soul of the brioche comes from the eggs and butter. Why ruin a good thing? Something that irritates me is when quality is not consistent. Today's brioche was an absolute dissapointment. Cutting corners to save money and resulting in a half-ass product is never a wise business decision.

They also have baguettes, and different kind of sandwiches and you can self decide what vegetables and dressings you want. I always go for a Chicken salad with aioli and pesto. In the price of 117 kr it includes a slice of bread. It is really expensive and the staff are quite ungenerous with the amount of food. If I want some cucumber it isn't surprising to just get 3 or 4 slices, and especially with the chicken and bulgur (just a couple tablespoons) So it's a bit irritating constantly asking for a bit more. If I pay 117 kr i really want to get my plate full. It's better to have the salad to go (you get a bit more), then staying in. But nevertheless, a delicious healthy place that I recommend. + Their small brownies are delicious! Don't miss out on that, only 5kr á piece.
