The day pass for adults at $7 each was a great deal, especially since kids ride for free. The interior of the train was impressively clean--seriously, spotless--and well-ventilated, making the ride comfortable from start to finish. The conductors were friendly and accommodating, adding to the overall positive experience. The children particularly enjoyed the ride, making it a memorable family outing. Highly recommend the Metro Rail for a convenient, clean, and enjoyable transportation option in the Austin area!

The single ride can only be purchased in cash from the kiosk at the station AND you need exact fare or you will get your change in the form of a use-it-or-lose-it CapMetro voucher that expires in 15 days - boo! Most folks will prefer the ticketing experience using the CapMetro smartphone app (unless they have exact change and really only need a one-way trip for $3.50). I highly recommend installing the app and getting payment methods set-up in advance so that boarding, activating your ticket, and displaying it when asked will be a breeze. Paying at the kiosk can be a hassle and if the queue is long, you might miss your train and wait 30 minutes or more until the next one arrives. Students with a photo school ID or a CapMetro "Reduced Fare ID" can get half-priced tickets, but to access this benefit through the CapMetro app, you have to first visit their Transit Store in downtown Austin to set it up in person (call 512-389-7454 for instructions). Be sure to bring a birth certificate, passport, or other proof of age/eligibility for the rider. This also applies to seniors, people with disabilities, and active military out-of-uniform. Other ways to purchase passes at retail outlets are detailed at https://capmetro.org/purchase/. If you are used to traveling via public transit in other major cities, you may find using CapMetro services to be, well, somewhat frustrating. The truth is that we haven't made the investments that we should have to keep up with the rapid growth of our city and you can see the evidence when you ride our trains & buses. For MetroRail passengers, this means that trains don't come very often, they don't stop at many places that you likely would want to go, and parking is often not available anywhere near the station where you are starting your trip. However, if you aren't in a hurry, are aware of the limited schedule, and are actually headed to Crestview, ACC Highland, Plaza Saltillo (Eastside entertainment district), or Downtown (business and entertainment galore), the MetroRail is a comfortable ride that relieves your need to sit in traffic or find elusive parking at your destination. In Austin for SXSW and had an awful experience with one of their riders, to the point that I'll…read morenever use this service again. I'd been using Uber for most of my trip to get from one session to the next, and have had nothing but positive experiences. In this case, I needed to get from the Hyatt Regency to the Long Center, an 8 minute walk according to Google Maps. I was in a rush to make my next session, checked Uber and the fare estimate was $3. I saw a Pedicab rider nearby and figured I'd give them a go, instead of waiting for a car, since the venue was so close and I hadn't used them before. When I jumped in the Pedicab, there were signs that clearly state that the riders work for tips only. The rider did not say hello, mention anything about rates (since the 'tips only' signs are clearly marked), was not friendly and started blasting obnoxiously loud music while I was trying to make a quick call to a colleague. When we arrived - less than 5 minutes later, most of which was spent waiting on a traffic light - I gave the rider $5 (more than Uber estimated, and what I thought was fair) and said thank you. He proceeded to tell me how, "I normally charge $10 for that ride" in which, confused, I pointed to the sign that clearly states the rider works for tips only. He said, "Yeah, but I charge $10." Obviously this is a violation of Pedicab policy, or he would have given me the rate BEFORE I got in, and not AFTER we'd already arrived. Still confused, I told him that I could have used Uber for $3, to which he rudely and loudly responded in front of other convention goers, "Yeah, well I'm not Uber, I charge $10!"...again, despite the clearly marked 'tips only' policy. He was absolutely right. He was not Uber. He was slower. Ruder. Did not have AC. And, unlike Uber - where their drivers actually care about the perception and reputation of the company that they're representing - he was unprofessional and dishonest...so it makes perfect sense that he should charge over 3x what a car service charges. How silly of me to think otherwise. He then went on to use profanity and insult the $5 I gave him...until he saw me using my phone to take a photo of him and the number to call for complaints, to which he quickly rode away like a coward who did not want to be held accountable for literally demanding money from riders and clearly violating Pedicab policies. He was riding cart #30, at roughly 4:30 pm on March 14, 2015. If the Pedicab company cares about the way their riders treat customers while representing them, they can contact me and I can furnish a photograph of this class act and model employee who should immediately be fired / not permitted to represent the company. I will say, however, that other Pedicab riders that I have encountered in Austin have been VERY friendly and polite, which is why I decided to use them in this instance. But this experience left me with a massively negative impression. I understand that the riders who cart people around are physically exerting themselves; but to claim that that service is worth 3x more than sitting in a comfortable and air conditioned car? And yelling at customers, demanding more money? Please.

Drove around for far longer than I wanted to admit, and ended up parking up on 10th street. No problem, the weather was chilly, but nice in the sun, and much to see during the walk down to Van Zandt. Got there a bit early, so we explored Rainy Street as well. I must say, Rainy definitely got my appetite going! Check-in was simple: you walk into the hotel, get scanned in, get a wrist band and bag, join the line, and once 3:00 hits, up the stairs you go. There's no map nor instructions; you really just walk around and choose how you want to experience the event. My take on the experience overall was that it was simply controlled chaos. It was a dense crowd, and a lot of shoulder rubbing, but everyone there was super nice and really just there for a good time. And good times were had. 16 competing chefs, plus drink and cheese stations galore! The food was excellent and our favorites included the dishes from Banger's, Black's, and Juliet. And although not part of the competition, Contigo's smoked leg of lamb was so good, and deserved votes as well! As for the drinks, we loved the gin and tonic from Roxor. We also managed to get to the front of the pack to watch the butcher demo from Salty Sow's Chef Marmulstein. He definitely knows his stuff and gave a captivating presentation. In the end, my stomach was near exploding and pretty much had to skip dinner. The event was super fun, so very Austin, and highly recommended! Some tips for next time. Don't rush! None of the stations ran out of food. Also if you're here with a friend, maybe share the first round of samples and go for seconds at the ones you liked the most. That way, you get to sample more non-lamb dishes and won't walk out two pounds heavier.
