I used to love Metropolitan. It was my go to place on a day out with the girls for a bite to eat and lovely cocktails. Then it got very overcrowded and became the place to be for a while. And that's when I kind of started to fall out of love with it. It was no longer the place you could always get a seat and listen to quite chilled house music whilst getting drinks brought directly to your table. It was a cramped, twenty minute wait kinda place. I just stopped going. We ended up here for a drink last week after a meal and it seems a lot of people had decided to give Metropolitan a pass these days. There were couples taking up entire booths and no massive queue at the bar. We headed upstairs to the piano bar and got a booth straight away. This was nothing like I remembered it. The drinks I ordered were both tasty enough. A Lynchburg Raspberry and a Mango Frozen Daquiri. I got a sip of my friend's salted caramel martini and it was by far my favourite! However the atmosphere had gone from nice and chilled, to busy and tense to, now, a bit flat. It's such a shame because this really was one of my favourite places to go in Merchant City. I'm now on the hunt for a new cocktail bar with a laid back atmosphere since Metropolitan has lost a lot of its charm.

Great place for really good cocktails! Fav cocktail: parma violet. Not that keen on the food here so will just stick to the cocktails.

Really enjoyed the prosecco and steak here. The steak was well cooked and very tasty but would have been much easier to eat on a plate. Mine was served on top of the chips (making them soggy) and salad in a pasta bowl!? Very awkward to cut steak when it's piled on top of things. Also rather heavy on the red onion in the salad. The pate was nice too but not enough oatcakes (a familiar problem in many places) although I was brought some more when I asked. We were there for lunch at a free event - the service was great and the place is nicely decorated in a modern yet comfortable style.

Some friends and I had just been out for a nice meal in the Merchant City when we were tempted to go for some after-dinner drinks. As we walked past the Metropolitan, we decided to head in and share a bottle of wine. This is a nice bar. Joined to the Merchant Square, you have the option of sitting indoors or 'outdoors' in the large covered courtyard. After just a few minutes we were approached by a very friendly, smartly dressed (and drop dead gorgeous might I add) waitress who took our order and brought our drinks to the table. Unfortunately, as you'd expect for a nice bar- the drinks ain't cheap. The cocktails were pricey so it was more economical to share a bottle of vino. For a Thursday night, the place was quiet but enough people were about to give you a bit of an atmosphere. Sitting in the adequately-heated Square surrounded by potted plants, it almost felt like we were dining outdoors on the continent- what a lovely experience on a cold November night.

Definitely one of the top cocktail bars in Glasgow. Wide selection ranging from martinis, to hurricanes, to prosecco based drinks. (They also have your standard beer etc). My favourite right now is the Salted Caramel Martini which is garnished with a sliver of salted caramel - not that i need an incentive getting to the bottom of my glass. Too easy to drink though. The bar staff are very attentive and helpful, and will also come up with a special cocktail for you if it's not on the menu. I would recommend sitting outside on the cobbled Merchant Square.

There was plenty of seating, and the "outdoor" area on Merchant City Square is a nice place to sit.

She was very friendly and obliged us by answering questions about the ideal time to visit their establishment. She was a local and explained that around 10p it has much more of a club vibe. She appreciated that the drinks were cheap and despite working there admitted to going socially on a regular basis. I ordered a coconut fruity cocktail of some sort and my husband got the Long Island iced tea, however they put coke in it. And while it is described that way on the menu we've never heard of coke in a Long Island iced tea. The drinks here are much too sugary for our liking, but we can definitely see the appeal for the 20 somethings, especially when they have a live DJ.

I visited Swing on Saturday night (30 Aug 2014) and had a great time!…read more For something a wee bit different in Glasgow, this should be on your must-visit list. The club is intimately sized and follows a retro early-mid 20th century aesthetic. This is backed up by the fantastic service by the staff who address you as sir and madam. The entertainment began with RadioJam; a guy and girl duo playing acoustic r'n'b, which would normally be my idea of hell but it actually fit the mood nicely and my missus was ready to take them home with us to play in our living room on demand. After a short break, they were followed by the Fortunate Sons and their brand of Americana/bluegrass, which then had us up for a bit of dancing! As mentioned, the place is small so there's no place to hide if you want to throw some shapes. There was also a spot of aerial acrobatics by Silks. It was a short performance but threw up something different and was visually compelling. Swing is apparently famed for its cocktails and i agree. The two bartenders obviously knew their stuff and took pride in the drinks. At the start of the night when it's still quiet, they make more of a show of it and my 'Old Fashioned' was quite impressive compared to some previously had poor efforts elsewhere. Suffice to say, I reflected my appreciation with a good tip. There is a cocktail menu (which i think they vary each week) but they will make whatever you like. Also, while it's quiet at the start of the evening you will get table service but understandably this peeters off as the club fills up. Cocktails are pricey so take plenty of dosh if you're going to be ordering a few. However, beers etc., are more reasonable. Another thing I liked was when a large hen party showed up, clad in sashes and all the usual getup, a polite word was had from the club owner to remove their gear as this, I guess, is not what he wants his club to be known for. And to be honest it was the most dour faced hen party I have ever seen! We booked ahead to secure a table at an exrta cost (£7.50 pp) but folks can pay on the door for £5. I'd recommend getting a seat.

Because this place is part fancy cocktail bar, part football bar. I'm not saying that I didn't like this place, I actually really did. It was a nice place to catch up with a friend over some food and chat for a few hours. It's a very modern/upmarket place, but as I said in the intro, there's TVs around the place showing football. I think without the TVs I would really love this place, but I'm not into football at all. It was a Tuesday afternoon so I don't even know what game they were showing, but some people were watching it, so obviously that has some appeal. I had a virgin mojito which was lovely (if I'd been driving I would have had the non-virgin one, obviously!) and a couple of small dishes instead of a main. The squid starter was lovely, a generous portion and perfectly cooked. I also got a side of mac cheese which was deliciously cheesy and actually really big for a side. I didn't complain, obviously. Service was really good while we were there - the staff looking after our table were super friendly and chatty without being overbearing. Prices were reasonable and the place had a good vibe. I would definitely go back here to try it out again as I did really like it, and perhaps sitting in the restaurant area away from the TVs would be a bit more pleasant. Otherwise it was really nice.

The sleek and stylish interior matches the clean-cut look on the exterior, making the Bowery stand out against the lovably scruffy look that Queen St seems to have (that is a compliment btw!) The drinks menu is extensive; they have a nice range of beers and wines and some tasty-sounding cocktails too. The atmosphere was quiet and serene when we visited, which gives me the impression that this would make a great venue for a post-shopping lunch/cocktail date with friends. Lovely!

Located on the bustling Renfrew St. this place is hard to miss. The minute you walk in you feel like you're walking into a modern Latin American restaurant - sexy, dark, colourful are all the adjectives that are popping out at me. We came in on a Saturday night and it was busy, busy, busy. People were dancing, professional dancers were in full costume, every table was full, and all the guests looked happy taking down their fancy cocktails. The one downside of it being busy? It was hard to get a drink from the bartender. But once we got his attention, he was quick to serve. Our trip was short and sweet, since we had many other bars we wanted to visit this night. One drink and we were out of there. I would definitely come back for more drinks and dancing though. They also have a food menu that looked quite good, but unfortunately I didn't try anything. Good music, good vibes, good drinks. What more could you want?

The décor is okay, functional as much as interesting, there is a nice selection of spirits, especially rum, and I suspect that the tables can be cleared for salsa, gigs etc. The food and service though was slightly disappointing. Not that our server wasn't chatty or pleasant, the exact opposite in fact, it's just that the food took a while to arrive. Again, the menu is slightly disappointing too, there is very little on there that is specifically Cuban, in fact most of it would not be out of place in a Spanish tapas bar. I ordered albondigas (meatballs in tomato sauce), sticky chicken skewers, and the roasted chorizo. It took a while, when it did come though it was all tepid, it just wasn't warm enough, unlike my partner's, hers were all fine, but then again she didn't get the Gambas Pil Pil she wanted nor the tea at the end because it was taking too long! The roasted chorizo was great, a nice smooth chorizo with a really tasty red wine, honey and onion sauce. I also had some of my partner's Cajun cream mushrooms and they were creamy, spicy and properly warm. Nice large olives too. The meatballs were not bad, quite tasty, although I personally like them firmer, and the tomato sauce wasn't broken down enough, meaning it was separated and it certainly didn't coat well. The skewers weren't "sticky" enough, making them a little drier and the lime and honey flavour not as intense as it could have been. I'm sure it'll get better, these are no doubt just teething problems, but on the basis of this visit it's a three.
