Was in Madrid recently and found the metro quite easy to use. From the time I landed in Madrid, I immediately found my way to the Metro and headed directly to the City Center. From the airport, you'll take Line 8 to Nuevos Ministerios and then connect to wherever you needed to go. Line 8 is one of the few where the announcements are also in English. The connections were quite easy to maneuver in my opinion. For me, I took Line 10 to Santo Domingo and then Line 3 to Callao and ended up near my hotel. Very seamless process. A tad bit of walking underground, but that is to be expected outside the US. I found that the 10 trip is the most efficient deal for a 3 day stay. The signage is pretty clear in my opinion. I think it's easy for any foreigner to manage manuevering, granted they've had some experience navigating the metros in their local cities. read more

I'm completely a fan of the Madrid Metro. It went where I needed it to go. The trains ran often. It is clean. It is quiet. And for sure, it is cheap! A five day pass was $30 and I rode the hell out of it for four of those five days! There's an app to help you get from one place to the next and it works well though the Google Maps were a bit better for timing. My only complaint is that it is not very handicap accessible. Too many stairs and not enough lifts. I'd also like to see more signage on the street pointing the way to the nearest Metro stop. read more

We both appreciated that it was a simple, speedy, and cheap way for us to get from our Hotel (near Sol) to the Atocha Station (for the Renfe Train to Toledo or to pick up our Rental Car). The Madrid Metro is one of the best, easiest and quickest ways of traveling around Madrid with it going to places that busses or other transportation might not. They is two major things about the Underground I dont like however : They is a large amount of stairs although some stations have lifts and escalators they can be a pain and when visiting Madrid and traveling on the Metro, you cant see the city when traveling with everything being underground. Out of the 3 Underground Transportation Systems I have travelled on (London, Munich and Madrid), I would have to rank this the lowest because the other stations have had shops and restaurants their and nicer scenes in the undergroud scenes than Munich and London. They are 12 lines with Dark Blue Line 10 going to Santiago Bernabau and Pink Line 8 going to Madrids Airport. Positives for the Underground however is fast travel with trains coming every few minutes for a reasonable price and it can take you anywhere in Madrid. As with other Underground services, the trains come every few minutes, so you dont need to worry about missing your train and rushing. I would of prefered to give 3.5 stars however I feel as it is a quick way to travel aroumd Madrid, The Madrid Metro deserves 4 stars. Although this is a great mode of transportation for residents, I would not reccomened this to be tourists main mode of transportation because mainly you can not see this great city when traveling. read more

Wow, this is a great Metro system, It is fast, clean, and well maintained. It's surprisingly affordable, and it goes all over. Different lines feel different, which is cool. Part of that is the age of the trains. I really like the big bright ones that go to the airport. A Metro Map is close to an essential if you will use it much. It will help you remember where to change trains. There are a few minor issues, like on my last trip the voice announcing the next station was quite. I liked the voice so I didn't have to keep searching for station names. Which leads to issue #2 some stations need to be better labeled. That problem was, not surprisingly, especially and issue in stations undergoing work. Those two problems led to me getting off at the wrong station one time. I didn't see a name until I was outside. Tip: I find I never ride the Metro as much as I think I will, the main tourist area in Madrid is fairly compact so I usually like the walk. I would advise, don't buy to many tickets until you are sure you will need them. Wish: that airport line would be extended to Gran Via or Sol (better yet both). Biggest grip? Many stations are very spread out with lots of stairs. So yes I do have some issues with them, it can get better. Still I don't know a mass transit system that does it better. read more

Pros: Two stars because trains arrive soon and the staff is helpful. Cons: Being complicated system I was told to pay €7 and that I will be able to use it "today" and "tomorrow". I took just one ride on that day a few stops and when I returned the next day it asked me to pay again... This time the helpful Metro agents told me I must pay €3, so I did. Took just one ride, just one metro stop. Then later on the same day I entered the station after some struggle to have the gate open for me. Was already a bit late for my airplane at Barajas, so at the exit from Metro to Barajas the gate won't open, so I was told by the Metro staff to pay yet another €3, which I refused to pay and told them that my flight is coming up soon. Finally they let me go without paying again. What a rip off system. 3 rides and €13!? Next time I'll just take the taxi! Also... why does the recorded voice say "proxima / next station" at the station which they have stopped at and already are leaving it? In other words the train stops at PROSPERITY and comes to a full stop, then the speaker says "NEXT STATION IS PROSPERITY". That is really weird. I used the metro twice while in Madrid to go from the airport into town to kill some time during my flight layover. The diagram of the lines and stops was a bit unclear, at least to me, but then again I don't usually use public transport in big cities. The fee to get from the airport to about 5 stops down into the city was 4 euros each way due to the supplemental airport fee. Still much cheaper than a cab which probably would have run more like 40-50 euros. Also, on the plus side it was fast, clean and not overcrowded. Would recommend it as a way to navigate Madrid on a budget for locals and tourists alike. read more

Definitely a great option to getting around Madrid. You buy your ticket per trip for 1 euro. There is a great option: 10 trips for 9 euros. If you go to the website, you can find the many other options to purchase tickets. The people at the information desks are also very helpful. The metros are always clean, and quite spacious. The timing on the boards are not necessarily very prompt, so 1 min may actually mean 5 minutes. A great option to getting to the airport since it is directly connected to the city by way of metro. You will have to pay a supplemental 1.50 euros. read more

Madrid's Metro system is my favorite in Europe and really shows that Madrid has its shit together in terms of urban transportation. There are something like 11 or 12 modern lines and they are linked to train stations and, most importantly, into the airport. As far as station names go, the best one is "Mar de Cristal," or "Sea of Glass." I'm knocking off a star because a lot of the stations are ordinary and, from some important metro stops in Madrid's dynamic center, such as Gran Via or Sol, it's 3 metro trains to get into the international airport. But, the connections are quick, so it's not that bad. read more

definitely the best way to get around in madrid's city centre, the metro takes you to the prado museum, buen park retiro, the opera house, the royal palace, and more. there are 12 different coloured lines, each running a different east-west or north-south route, with interchanges at heavily trafficked areas such as the train station. most lines start running around 0600, and run until 0200 the next morning, so it felt like it was open 24 hours since we did ride it quite late on some evenings. i appreciated that they had automated screens that informed passengers how long the wait would be for the next train and what direction it was running. my only complaint was that i had to stand up on almost every trip since there weren't many seats in most of the cars and they filled up quickly. read more

Don't even think about taking the Madrid Metro with a buggy! For one, only a few stops have a lift and are accessible with a buggy/wheelchair. Those who are accessible are very poorly maintained, with lifts often out of service and wider gates not opening. I can only imagine how tough it must be for people in wheelchairs. The Metro is very confusing, especially with all the lines that connect with each other with tunnels and hallways that are as long as walking the above streets themselves. It gets hotter underground than above. It's easy to miss a turn and accidentally get on another line. I am really bad with directions and my best friend who is good with them got lost here and there. It does make it easier and accessible on a dime to get to some tourist and cool central stuff in the city. A lot of these are within 30 - 40 minute walking distance, however, there were some moments in which we just needed a rest. Price is less than 2 euros each way. I will give it credit that Madrid have their stuff together in terms of transportation. Our city could learn from this. Connections are less than 10 minutes between which makes it really fast to get from point A - B. read more
