This was my first time at Method Climbing gym and I had a great time. The person at the front desk was very friendly and kind. The location is big and the levels are labeled so that everyone can be guided. You can rent shoes here. I saw that they have beginner classes as well as different groups you can join (ladies meet ups, BIPOC, student nights). I recommend this location if you want to start rock climbing or are experienced! The community looks very welcoming. read more

Confusing to get into the gym. The gym is located in the basement. But there wasn't any signs leading there. I first went into the cafe in first floor but then got confused as to how to get around until i followed someone to get into the basement. It would be better if they put more signs around for new comers for guidance and reference Also there is I believe 4 hrs parking for $4, but the signs are hidden and not easy to spot on. Had I known this before hand, I would have gotten parking quicker and instead of spending time to find parking around. Quite hard to find parking around downtown... The gym itself was nice. Quite big considering its in the basement. Its problems were different, cool, and with different holds that I am used to. I think its bigger in size than Rock Climbing Gym in Manhattan. Overall its a great gym to come for bouldering only. Even tho it has rope climbing but i think its too short to enjoy. I would go rope climbing somewhere else in NJ, say Hoboken or Hackensack... read more

Came here to check out the gym after hearing about it from friends. The gym is definitely big and has bouldering, some rope climbing as well as a workout area. The staff were super friendly and nice and there's a lot of good problems on the walls. The changing rooms are a little hard to find at first but they're through the curtains by the elevators. It definitely gets very stuffy in there as it's underground so the ventilation isn't as great but aside from that a great bouldering gym. read more

I have been here several times now and it is definitely the best bouldering gym in a 25 mile radius in NJ. The style is a bit compy, but there are a good amount of features to train on. Vibes are good, and plenty of strong climbers. There are a few ropes.. but I think it is top rope only and its very sparse Overall the facilities are great too, and it is about a 20 min walk from the Newark Path station Cons are that there is no dedicated parking, no signal as the gym is in the basement, and the employees can be a bit strict. For instance, my girlfriend, who is a graduate student, was charged full price on student day. Despite arriving late with only an hour remaining, they did not make any exceptions for her. read more

Excellent gym! The membership is worth it. It features an extensive bouldering wall that is changed every 5 to 6 weeks. A rock climbing wall that's 30 feet high. A weight lifting gym with equipment built to improve lateral movement/flexibility. For first time climbers there are numerous classes where professionals can teach you how to climb using proper technique. I'm new to climbing but it seems like this gym has everything for climbers. Top rope, autobelays, bouldering AND a designated workout area to get a great pump. Bonus points for the punching bag and speed bag. Street parking is nearby. You're probably best parking in a garage or using the Park Mobile app for metered parking. Right now the max is 1hr at a time on the meter so remember to refill in between your climbing sesh. We used the Groupon deal for a month long membership for 2 and visited for the first time yesterday. It was my second time bouldering and I was impressed by the size and variety of climbing routes. We went at 6pm on a Saturday and there weren't too many people there at all. I appreciated that most of the v0-v2 courses were actually doable for a beginner, and left sore and tired, with plenty of courses left to try for next time. The environment is friendly and it's fun to watch other more expert climbers while taking a break. The cafe has delicious tea as well. read more

I cannot say enough good things about Method. It has everything you could possibly ask for in a climbing gym meaning that it has gone beyond just rock climbing. There is a cafe above ground and a mini store stocked with the best gear around. The coffee from the cafe itself was worth the visit and the baked goods were right from Balthazar. I went super early in a Tuesday so my group ended up having the their gym to ourselves and the climbs made it all the more with it. The setting is super challenging in a good way and fun in the best way. It incorporates all the parts of climbing that make it fun like weight shifting climbs or even partner climbs. I think whoever comes will undoubtably find something that is their style. I didn't get to try the top roping, but I will say that the walls were relatively short, but the appeal of the gym is mostly bouldering so I wouldn't put that against them. As for the facilities, this is top notch. The gym area is stocked with the best equipment on Earth like Rogue squat racks. There's also a yoga room that is seemingly soundproof abs the tinted windows add to the secluded zen vibe. There's also small things like tripods set up for recording your climbs and a ping pong table for when you're lounging. Also, did I mention that the membership is around $70 a month?! Considering this may be one of the best gyms in NJ, that is absolutely worth it. I would definitely go out of my way to visit! It's worth the trip. read more

came here to climb because my sister really wanted to start rock climbing now that we moved out on our own. she says it's the best way to make friends haha and i definitely see why once i visited! majority of the staff that work here are SUPER friendly and helpful and the people who climb are also very friendly and helpful as well ! you wouldn't expect such a big climbing spot looking at the building from the outside but once you go inside, through the cafe and down the elevators, the climbing space is pretty big! i've never bouldered before so it was definitely difficult to at first but after going for a bit sometime now, i'm finally getting the hang of it and can see why people come often! it feel very nice to complete a set that you've been working on for awhile and it feels very rewarding when you finally do accomplish it. i love the fact that they have events here for the members as well. such as free shoe demos where you can try on different shoes to see which one you'd like to buy; as well as free beer & karoke nights. and if rock climbing isn't for you, there's still a gym and yoga/self defense classes you can take. although it may be a bit pricey ($85/month), i find that if you go once a week, the price pays for itself, especially since you can bring 2 guests for free/month. and if your guest starts a membership and you refer them, you get a $25 credit and your guest's $50 initiation fee gets waved (win-win!). overall, i see the hype. don't know if can continue for long since $85 is a lot of money per money, but for now, i highly recommend everyone trying this place out at least once! parking can be a bit hectic though so you can pay the $6 to pay in the parking garage or come after 6pm and park across the street! read more

I do like the gym in a lot of ways, and I can totally see where these good reviews are coming from; something about the route-setting seems very whimsical and fun, they have ping pong, that sorta thing. That being said, don't trust their promotions, be prepared for inconsistency, be aware there's not enough options for the price, and if you're going here be prepared to be nickel and dime'd by the owner. The most blatant example: I go there once for student night where they have a discount, and I say I'm a teacher and ask if the discount applies to me. They tell me it does and get me in with the discount. So then, I go again another time to student night, but this time, despite them having a note on file that I'm a teacher and to let me in, I get a bunch of hesitation and gruff from the employee. She begrudgingly lets me in, and then like ten minutes later while I'm IN THE MIDDLE OF CLIMBING she pulls me back to the front desk where the manager tells me he's refunding the discounted price and charging me in full for the day pass instead. I get no apology, no explanation other than 'the employees who let you in were wrong in both cases.' I ask the owner if, given that I came here for that discount and literally was already let in with that discount that I was told twice now is allowed for teachers, can they just let me off with the discount for today and then I know for the future? The owner gets rude and belligerent. I say 'fine, nickel and dime a teacher over five bucks when your employees told me otherwise twice in a row.' This man leans over the desk and says lividly 'what did you just say to me?' So, I repeat myself louder and basically just walk away. Congrats on making that extra five dollars...truly bad vibes from the owner. read more

I had the opportunity to climb at Method just before the official opening. I really liked it and recommend it highly. In brief, it was FUN. It has extensive bouldering and a smattering of autobelay routes. With its giant bouldering space, there are quite a number of routes at every level. Led by headsetter, Ivan, I felt the routes were interesting and fit well with the wall contours. Some routes were soft, others more challenging for the grade, but ultimately all fun climbs. At some gyms, there are absurd starts or dangerous finishes. I didn't find this to be true at Method. It also has to be stated that co-owner Obie Carrion is an amazingly nice person and equally amazing as a climbing coach who, in the past at another location, has casually helped me with suggestions about foot placement and body position. Having coached the world's best (i.e., Ashima), his skills far exceed my limited abilities. About the reviewer: 5'2", 63-year old climbing enthusiast known more for being happy on the wall than for his skills thereon as I max out at V4 or V5, at least as of this review. read more
