I *loved* this shop when I first went on a furniture binge there (at the old Mass Ave location) in 2012. I was sad years later to find it gone, but just FREAKED OUT to find it alive & well & reincarnated at 93 Holland Ave in Somerville.
As far as I'm concerned, both architecture & furniture design took a terrible turn after WWII, so Metamorphosis is my jam. The old Mass Ave space was amazing -- this tangled jungle of pre-war furniture piled high upon itself in what had to be a fire hazard death trap, but which was kind of magical to explore if you took off your shoes & climbed around.
In total, I think I own two bureaus, a dresser, a desk, & an end table that came from Metamorphosis. I had no issue with getting the pieces delivered, but that may have been because I was subletting in an elevator building that summer. I don't remember precisely what I paid for each piece, but I remember thinking I got a pretty great deal all together. (I do remember paying $50 for the very old end table, because the man who delivered it to me was *Not Amused* that his employee had sold it to me so cheaply. He asked to buy it back from me, but I declined to sell it.)
My one complaint is the finish on the two bureaus & the desk. I'm not sure what it is--it's like a rub-on stain that easily rubs off (not permanent, & no clearcoat on top). I've had two different cleaners over the years damage these pieces (e.g. accidentally remove the color & leave lighter patches) while trying to clean/polish them. Since I got the pieces pretty cheap, I just sort of shrug about this...but if getting them Properly Refinished next year turns out to be a right pain, I'll update my review and take off another star. read more
