The owner of the shop is very amiable & knowledgeable: he re-wired my lamp at a much lower price and in a shorter time than other places I contacted were able to. He knew a lot about Handel lamps & told me a typical price range--which was right in line with what I had paid. In addition, he took--without my asking--a little extra effort & secured some high-quality vintage-looking cord for my lamp. Fun Antiques is a real find for anyone who appreciates vintage aesthetics and enjoys finding unique designs to personalize their domestic space. The shop carries just about every interior design element, ranging from lamps and lighting styles dating back to the victorian era, to antiques and collectibles, furniture, framed prints and posters, and even sound equiptment ( fantastic record players and a nice selection of records.) The shop also takes in lamp repairs and does lighting restoration the first time I stopped was shortly after I moved to north Cambridge. Jerry, the shop owner, was kind, friendly, and found me an antique Smith-Corona typewriter and beautiful antique picture frame. Jerry is knowledgeable about all of the merchandise he buys for his store and helped direct me to some great pieces (at great prices) to light and furnish my new home. The store also stocks vintage watches, jewelry, books, and some clothing. I found a great 100% wool sweater one day while browsing. It's one of those places where you never know what you can find and where it is nice to linger since the atmosphere is welcoming and relaxed. If you are looking for quality vintage furniture or lighting or if you like finding one of a kind pieces to add to your home, I'd recommend stopping in and talking with Jerry. I am so glad I found Jerry's shop! He did an amazing job repairing a large floor lamp I bought off Craigslist that needed some rewiring. Jerry was so kind- he stepped me through the repairs, and gave me a very reasonable estimate and repair timeframe. My lamp works perfectly now, with all new wires and dimmer. Fun Antiques is a great little antique shop. There's a lean toward Danish Modern, but also wonderful finds from other time periods. The store is small, but its worth a stop in to check out the selection. Prices are incredibly fair. The owner, Jerry, is extremely helpful, friendly, and just an all-around fabulous person to do business with. I'd shop here again before going to another antique place that lacks his spirit. As a safety precaution, Jerry rewires all lighting himself before putting it out for sale. If you're a staunch antique elitist, this might not sound good to you, but if you're more concerned about old electrical wiring causing a fire in your newly decorated living room, I'd say its a good thing. Bonus: there's a collection of old microphones and some other audio equipment in a glass case in the back. Drool-worthy stuff. read more

Fun Antiques rocks!! I'm not talking about the antiques (They are awesome too!), but the their terrific antique lamp repair and restoration service. We had a Tiffany style lamp that wasn't working and inquired at a local lighting store about repair. The store didn't offer repair services, and they gave us the information of Jerry at Fun Antiques, whom they highly recommended. Not only did Jerry fix my lamp, but he also put on a pull chain switch for a classic look. Jerry is professional and really cares about what he's doing. So glad I found him - there is nowhere else that would do such a thorough and diligent job at a very reasonable price. I had my lamps transformed and also bought some beautiful earrings! read more

Jerry is amazing. The second I walked in he was all smiles, kind and knowledgeable about his antiques. I was looking for a coffee table and found a handmade wooden table with ceramic inlays, I knew I couldn't leave the store without it! Jerry was very flexible with negotiations and gave me an incredibly generous price on the table. I was visiting Boston for the weekend and was lucky enough to find this little gem. Jerry is very laidback and happy to let you browse undisturbed, but I had a great time chatting with him. He's very knowledgeable and friendly and once he knew more about my interests he showed me some very special pieces. I took home several little treasures including a gift for my father, and I'm still dreaming about the antler chandelier from the Black Forest I had to leave behind. A wonderful selection of lighting, as well as instruments. I look forward to coming back on my next trip! read more

Got a really great mid-century Danish chair here yesterday. He had it placed on the sidewalk right outside the door, so it caught my eye as I was driving by. It was a very fair price and in good condition. The owner is really friendly and helped me get it into my trunk. I looked around a bit and he has some interesting 40s + 50s looking furniture and had a cool old radio that I didn't get too close to for fear of wanting to buy it. I definitely recommend this place. Oh and it's more what I would call North Cambridge, than Porter. read more

Great vintage store that specializes in mid century modern and antique lighting. Owner is extremely welcoming and has an easy going vibe. Stock is well curated and priced accordingly. Update: while I thought this business did a good job of replacing a lamp switch on a wooden table lamp, and a switch embedded in the cord of a small table lamp, I later discovered that the man did not do a good job. The wooden lamp has gouges in the wood near the circular switch. The man didn't even take the time to try to repair the gouges he created or to fill them in with color (at the least). On the 2nd small lamp, the man put a 3-way switch in versus the 2-way switch that was on it AND on a matching lamp that it stands next to on an antique desk. Therefore, when I turn on both lamps, I have to take more time to advance the 3-way switch than the 2-way one. This should not have happened. He should have replaced the exact same type of switch on the lamp. He should have asked me first before making a change in the type of switch. I do NOT recommend this shop for lamp repair. read more

I'm late to post this review. 3 years ago our house suffered extensive water damage and we needed to salvage 3 antique chandeliers with brass fittings and crystals. Everything needed to be taken apart and rewired so they could be re hung according to code. Jerry did an amazing job and we were super happy with the outcome. Very reasonably priced for the job and a great quirky store for all kinds of other things. read more

I had tried to get an antique torchier rewired and repaired at another place and they made it so bad it was unusable but Jerry brought it back to working order and did so with a smile and some good humor. Jerry is the man! Just went there and bought a vintage fan. He was honest and told me the one I had liked was not working well and didn't feel comfortable selling it until he would rewire it. Very kind and patient. Not a great selection from the time periods I like (late 1800s/early 1900s), but for retro stuff, this is your place! read more

Jerry and his lovely assistant really saved me in a pinch. I had multiple vintage and/or reproduction fixtures (a brass moravian star and two george nelson bubble lamps) that needed rewiring and some general cleaning up and I had an electrician coming in just a couple days. Not only did they turn them around incredibly timely, but they did a great job at fair price with a smile and extra attention to detail where needed. Great, albeit small, collection. Based on what's displayed in the shop's windows, we assumed it was exclusively an antique lighting store. Well, in addition to the wonderful lamps, half of the store is dedicated to other funky and unique items, all priced fairly. While we weren't ready to purchase anything at the time, Jerry was more than happy to shoot the breeze and answer a number of questions. There is a laid-back vibe that permeates the place and makes you want to hang around even after you've seen everything twice. When we have some space to fill or are looking for gift in the future, we will absolutely be back! read more

I am months late in reviewing this place, but its a find. If you like mide-century/60's/70's furniture and accessories for the home, this place can't be beat. If it were in the South End, you could expect to pay double (at least) what the prices are here. Plus, this place has none of the snotty South End attitude. The owner is a very nice guy who is knowledgeable about his inventory and very pleasant to talk to or deal with. I saw a mirrored side table with a very 70's disco look - all triangles and odd angles. I fell in love with it but couldn't justify buying it. After getting into my car, I realized that if I waited, it would be gone, so I marched back into the place and was able to negotiate the price down a bit and I walked right out the door with it. So glad I did as it looks fantastic in my living room. I was also fascinated with the collection of microphones (think that famous deco microphone in the iconic Billie Holiday photo). Apparently, they have been refurbished so that they work, too! Don't know why, but I'm thinking this would look great on a bookshelf just as a decorative item. I have a feeling that this is not the place to go with anything specific in mind - just go with an open mind and maybe you'll find something you can't live without. I'm ready for another trip there. read more

I actually went in, not to buy, but to sell some older light fixtures from the home I purchased and was redecorating, and ended up exchanging them for an awesome light fixture that Jerry was working on that perfectly matched my new decor! He was so helpful about the exchange, offering information regarding rewiring and handing me change to put in the meter to give me time to discuss the new piece with my boyfriend on the phone. I got an old dusty Bridge Lamp in the basement of my parents house - it didn't have a shade, and was missing a few pieces. I remembered this shop from my drive from work in the morning, and because of all of the beautiful lamps in the window and thought they might be able to help. I walked in and Jerry jumped up to help. He showed me the possible shades that I could pick from (there were plenty to choose!) and he got to work repairing the lamp for me. He put on a new switch and replaced some of the hardware so it would be safer, and it would last longer, and then showed me while he did the repair! 20 minutes after I walked in I had a brand new lamp that I'm pretty sure my parents wish they hadn't given up! I couldn't have been happier and I know I'll be going back any time I'm shopping for or needing help with a new lamp. read more
