You can't go wrong with anything that has the barbacoa. The Mexican dishes are stronger than the Asian ones with the specialty rolls being pretty overpriced for what they are. I would come back solely for the pulled beef. read more

The best of both worlds! The establishment is very nice, lots of fun and interesting decor. The staff and our waiter AJ were awesome. We had a little bit of both sides, Mexican and Asian. The nachos and fish tacos were so good and fresh. I asked AJ what his top favorite sushi roll was and went with it, the Mesu roll. So delicious, a very good roll. We did make reservations ahead of time since it was a Friday night, but that was very quick and easy. Fresh fish flown in daily from Hawaii. read more

Natalie is a rockstar. Made our fist night in Charleston memorable! Great food & drinks too!

Amazing vibes here! Highly recommend coming to this restaurant with a group of people. The staff was super friendly and the food came out super quick. They are a fun unique asian and Mexican mix. So I was able to get queso and sushi!!! Who doesn't love that. Also if you have a special occasion or just because you can ring this Dong and it's so fun. read more

Amazing spot overall! My husband and I love Mexican and we love sushi so when we discovered this place while looking for restaurants in Charleston we were so excited!! The service was great, our server was very nice and super informative with the menu. He also took the time to help us locate a changing table nearby so we could change our 8 month old daughter. The food was delicious, as well as the drinks. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves sushi and Mexican! read more

See all

So. Amazing. My friend and I originally just came for some churros ( which were some of the best I've ever had ) but we also ordered some chorizo spring rolls and they were of this world. The staff was so friendly, my friend actually brought a stuffed bear we were taking pictures of around charleston for fun and they brought a bag for it haha. I would definitely recommend stopping by here, planning on having my friends birthday dinner here! read more

Mesu surpassed our expectations! We lucked out and got an outdoor table which is first come first serve. Our waitress, Anna, was awesome and knew we liked spicy drinks and recommended a spicy rim as an alternative to regular salt on the spicy margarita. We got both Mexican and Asian dishes and definitely felt that the Asian food was their strong suit! read more

Highly recommend for a large group dinner. Booked an 8pm reservation on a Friday night for a bachelorette party and were seated promptly. Our table was square rather than rectangle which is so nice for big groups to be able to chat! Waitress was amazing, super prompt, checked on us constantly. Food came out quickly. We were part of a bachelorette party and they treated the bride to a shot and a turn hitting the gong. AMAZING playlist in the background. Margaritas were a little more sugary tasting than we liked but other than that food was tasty and experience was fantastic! read more

Great food and atmosphere! We had the tacos and sake. Our server Natalie was awesome!!!!!! We will be back :)

This place is awesome. The MESU sushi is delicious and so is the street corn. If you like sashimi get Vermilion snapper (beeliner) it was the best sashimi I've ever had. The atmosphere is perfect for a weekend night. Our server, Cheyenne, was amazing. I'll definitely be coming back! read more

MESU - Street corn. So delicious! - Mexican Near Me - Charleston, South Carolina

I'm not one to ever write reviews on things however, if I can save just one person from wasting their time and money going to this place, then it might make me feel better about my own experience. This was the worst sushi I've ever tasted. I ordered the lobster roll and my friend ordered the tuna. Mine tasted like mayonnaise with a hint of fish rolled into rice. Hers tasted like spicy rice...and that's it. The "honey glazed" edamame didn't even have salt on it muchless any glaze. Between my mayo roll and the mezcal speciality cocktail that tasted like something I threw up in college, I've never been more grossed out. Add to that the incredibly cheesy venue blasting Lil Jon and the ying yang twins, I couldn't get out of there fast enough. Waitress was friendly however didn't say a word when neither of us touched our well speciality cocktails. This place is a HARD PASS. read more

I consider Mesu the best bar in Charleston. They play the best music, have the coolest art and all of the bartenders/servers are really great. Dying to see some new food on the menu! read more

I stayed at the Hyatt hotel and visited with my family and a second time took take out to eat in room. Atmosphere in restaurant is nice and service was good. We had tacos, which are not traditional but were very tasty (I like them more). We had sushi and rolls which were very good according to my wife (i dont eat fish). My second order had a mistake, which was quite annoying (cheese in taco, although I specifically asked no cheese, and taco with regular wheat, although I specifically asked for there corn option). I received the entire money of the order which included other things. Felt a bit bad... but they got my 5 stars read more

I'm so pleased with our choice to come here. Everything was so delicious. I also love the Mexican and sushi fusion. My boyfriend doesn't like sushi so I haven't been able to get sushi as often as I'd like, and I love that I was able to get a delicious roll, and he could get tacos he liked and we had awesome margaritas too. Delicious meal! Will definitely come back next time we're in town. read more

Natalie was super friendly and helpful server. Food was delicious and definitely will stop by again

The food is outstanding and sushi chef Hunter was amazing and prepared everything to perfection. I highly recommend for sushi and tacos!!!!

Soooo good. Every time my best friend visits from Charlotte...we have to go to MESU. we always get good service even on the weekends and even on holidays like Halloween. We've taken advantage of the outdoor sidewalk seating since COVID. I recommend you call ahead and reserve a table. The warm tortilla chips are addictive...they must sprinkle crack on them. I've only done the Latin side of the menu...the tacos...even the veggie ones are memorable in the best way. read more

Honestly extremely disappointed is the entire staff there. Coming from a hospitality background and barely any guests in the restaurant. No one greeted me and the server looked like he rolled his eyes when I walked in. I asked to order to go and a I was sent to the bar. Bartender doesn't greet me either but says what do you want to get. I said can I see a menu. I ordered 2 tacos and nachos. I counted about 12 staff members behind the sushi station and bar. No one is doing much but chit chatting with each other like they are at a social gala. I sit and wait and wait and wait, I am watching 2 boxes of food sitting in the window for about 7 minutes. No other food orders coming out and that's just sitting there. I ask the bartender if that was my food sitting in the window and his response was if it was I didn't see it. No apology at all. No hospitality and no service at all. The manager just walks around and makes jokes with all the staff but doesn't check on any guests or even check the window to see if food needs to go out. Poor staffing today. read more

AJ was great and super attentive I never felt like we were waiting for food or drink orders. everything that came out was as advertised and I will certainly be back. 10/10. read more

Take out at this spot was tricky but worth it. The fish was fresh and incredibly prepared by their sushi chef. We are also huge fans of the street corn. read more

I would write this restaurant more as a sushi bar rather than Mexican and sushi. They have a very limited Mexican menu. The menu really includes appetizers only. No burritos, no enchiladas, etc. Also, the atmosphere of the restaurant is more geared for bridal parties. 90% of the patrons were either brides to be wedding party. Reservations are definitely difficult at this restaurant. It will direct you to a side called Bourbon and bubbles. This will not get you a reservation. When attempting to call, no one would answer the phone. Needless to say when we arrived, we did not have a reservation as planned. The chips and guacamole were good. read more

Really good food and drinks. Lobster rangoon roll and truffle tuna tartare are musts.

We were visiting for the weekend and after looking at different restaurants for dinner, decided on MESU. This place offers a very unique menu with a blend of Mexican and Sushi. We loved everything that we ordered and the service from Natalia was excellent!! The place has a club atmosphere with all the fun and good music (without the dancing). A must try if you're in the area. read more

Such a fun place and the tacos are in point!!! Don't miss the chicken and Carnitas. Great service from Natalie and the whole staff. Will be back! read more

Awesome sushi! Margaritas are so good! The braised Barbacoa beef taco was insane! And Natalie our server was so sweet and helpful!

This place was great!!! The food was delicious, and so varied (Mexican AND sushi?!?!). We sat at the bar and our bartender,Nathan, was great. I hard a tasty house beer and my wife ordered a house specialty, but substituted vodka for gin. Nathan gently and respectfully talked her into trying the gin. She loved it!!! Now the food! We had a lobster Rangoon roll, brilliant combo! So tasty and big! We also each had a taco; shrimp and chorizo, and a barbacoa. Fresh cilantro on the side. Every single bite was brilliant!!! Charleston has an amazing food scene and there are so many great restaurants, and Mesu is no exception!!! But the thing that set this place apart for my wife and me was Nathan!!! read more

I love this restaurant! Get the street corn!!!! I've had Natalie and Danielle as lovely waitresses the past times I have been here. Great service and great food. Absolutely amazing establishment, would recommend! read more

The food was good. However, the service we received was a bit concerning. I went here with a group of 10 for a bachelorette party. The check was being paid by one person, to be split up later on. Our waiter added an extra pitcher of drinks ($50) and an extra appetizer ($10) to our check. I hope this wasn't done intentionally but the waiter did not apologize or act concerned when we asked him to revise the bill. It was a suspect and odd reaction. The food and service was good besides, but if you are going here with a large group be sure and double check your bill. read more

Oh my god this place is insane. I had dinner here expecting it to be casual- boy I was wrong. This place was BANGING. The music in here is so good- very upbeat and fun. The food was pretty good. Service was good. Our server was busy but we didn't mind since we got some entertainment out of it. Great place. Menu is very small tho. read more

Their barbacoa taco is the best in Charleston! This place is a must if you love tacos and margs!!

We were very excited to try this restaurant and unfortunately, left feeling disappointed. Firstly, the music is great but it is very loud. If you consider yourself a bar only, it's fine. Otherwise, waaay too loud for a restaurant. We had the nachos which were very delicious and a large serving. We also had the lobster Rangoon roll and 2 tacos and they left much to be desired. Our server, a young woman, seemed uninterested in her job (as did much of the staff) and was MIA most of the time. We also witnessed a couple who was sat nearby, was never tended to and we watched them walk out after 15-20 min of no one coming by to take their order. read more

This was probably the best meal I had in Charleston, and we ate at a lot of different restaurants! The sushi was some of the best I've ever had. Drinks were excellent. We came on a busy Saturday night without a reservation but were still seated almost immediately. My husband and I loved the music and the fun vibe. Would absolutely love to come back again and try different items on the menu! read more

Mike and his staff were simply AMAZING! Delicious food, superb service and a fantastic atmosphere!!! Thank you, I will be back!‍

First, the good: The decor and atmosphere are mostly a lot of fun. (A complaint about the music content and volume later) It's a small, tight space, but they do a pretty good job with it. Pretty much all of our food was delicious. The street corn and the clothespin taco and fish taco were the highlights. We went with barbacoa beef for the nachos but after tasting the carnitas in the clothespin taco, we made the wrong choice. The beef wasn't bad, but lacked in flavor compared to the carnitas pork in the clothespin taco. The seasoning on the chips was great, but I wish the nachos came with some salsa in addition to the guac and sour cream. It needed something to break up the heaviness. The fruit on the fish taco was outstanding and the spice/flavor was great. The sushi roll and churros we got were pretty good, but not as good as everything else. The fried chicken taco was too sweet to me, but my wife liked it, so a mixed review on that. Sushi and Mexican food seems like it shouldn't work together, but it's a fun and interesting concept. Would be great for when you and your group/date can't decide on a cuisine and want options. Now, the bad: I hate to be the fuddy duddy, but wish they wouldn't play music with such explicit lyrics. Looks like someone else complained about it in their review too. The music is LOUD too, to the point of making conversation difficult. Toss in explicit lyrics about sex and all the body parts involved and what the singer is going to do with them, and it's not my idea of ambience. Man oh man are the prices inflated. I get it's Charleston and you're using good ingredients, but everything on the entire menu seemed overpriced by a good 25% for the type of cuisine. I guess as long as we keep paying it, they'll keep charging it. Our server was hit and miss. Attentive at first, then missing for extended portions. I would have had another drink, but he never came to ask or check until too late in the meal and I decided not to bother at that point. It definitely wasn't bad service and everyone was friendly enough, but it was just okay-ish and not great. My biggest pet peeve is that I cannot STAND paying a 4% credit card surcharge. It's not posted anywhere in the restaurant or menu, in what is a clear violation of Visa/MC terms, it's just a fun little surprise on the receipt at the end of the meal. On top of that, it's 4%, and this place ain't paying 4% in credit card fees, I guarantee you. The extra 1.25%+ is just a nice little padding to their bottom line and I just simply cannot stand the entire thing. I know it's a cost of doing business, I know restaurants hate it, but geez guys, do better. Card surcharging sucks and changes the way I perceive a place, but this place took it to another level. It definitely will impact our decision to return, which instead of being guaranteed is now up in the air. Edit: Owner responded and said their card fees are at 4%. I'm not trying to be petty, but I would like to reply back and say there's no way your fees are at 4%. If this business is paying over 2.5% they're getting ripped off. (Source: I work in that industry.) Also, just listing it on the receipt after you receive the bill is NOT transparent and is a complete turnoff. Again, I hate arguing, but if you're going to give generic excuses for something that is a tacky rip-off, I'll respond in kind stating that it's not true. Again, I know this industry intimately and what you all are doing (no matter what semantics you would like to use) is surcharging, not cash discounting. You're not supposed to be surcharging debit cards under any circumstances, and you're also supposed to disclose it up front with signage, etc. Cash discounting requires that you raise your actual prices on all items by 3%, then you remove 3% if the payment is cash. The merchant is very obviously adding a surcharge, it's not a true representation of their true cost, and it's not disclosed until you get your bill and it's buried in the taxes. That's why I'm frustrated and it will affect my choice to return, no matter what excuses are made. read more
