This place is a great blend of Mexican and Japanese cuisine if you need a quick bite after walking up King Street! The service and food delivery were exceptionally fast and friendly. I had the bluefin tuna nachos which were well presented and abundant with fish, but did have that high quality bluefin tuna texture I'm used to. For my main meal I had the Birria ramen that I ate with excitement, but was a little disappointed with the lack of meat in the ramen and the over abundance of cheese in the taco to dip in their broth. The noodles were quite firm to my liking! I would definitely go back and try out more simple items rather than the "fusion" stuff.

very GOOD sushi!! I'm obsessed with this place!! The vibes are fun and definitely try the lychee martini SO GOOD! I would just come here for the sushi, I'm Mexican and i've had better tacos... and tacos don't go on flour tortillas. Aside from that, I love it here and i'm obsessed.

Tacos & Sushi? Sign me up! Mesu is an awesome Mexican Sushi fusion restaurant on King Street! The aesthetic here is great & the vibes are perfect for a meal with friends or a date night! There's bound to be something for everyone no matter what you're craving; & it's all delicious! If you have a hard time choosing between so many tasty options, I totally recommend trying a little bit of everything! The sushi is incredibly fresh and well prepared. The bao bun rocked & all of the taco combinations hit the spot! You need to check them out!

I have been on the fence about trying this spot because sushi and Mexican food didn't sound like a good mix. Through a Yelp experience I had the opportunity to try it and I am happy to report that the food was amazing!! I was pleasantly surprised. I was there for a Halloween event so all of the spooky cocktails were crafted to fit the occasion and tasty. The bartenders were the only staff members I had the chance to interact with and everyone was nice. The food itself: there was an assortment of sushi to choose from, street corn ribs, birria, dumplings, and tacos. Every bite I had was great. I'll def be coming back with my friends so they can enjoy a Mesu experience as well.

Tonight I crept into the Mesu Halloween Bash, and it was such a vibe! The place was alive with hauntingly good music, eerie lights, and plenty of spooky energy. My top food picks were the crispy rice and the Mesu Roll -- a lighter sushi with ahi tuna (my fav), avocado, white fish, tomatillo salsa, and cilantro. It was a fresh, flavorful contrast to the other fried treats at the party. The restaurant was transformed into a haunted hideaway draped in cobwebs and Halloween décor. The wait staff kept the plates coming and the tables clear. The only slight delay was at the bar, where our spooky-themed cocktails took a bit longer to brew... but honestly, with the high vibes, we didn't mind.

We went to Mesu for dinner and had a great time! They were kind enough to seat us with about 5 minutes left before the kitchen closed which we really appreciated. We started with the street corn which came cut into long pieces instead of on the cob and it was incredible. We also got the guac queso and salsa sampler which is such a good app choice if you're with a group. The sushi was surprisingly really good too and super fresh with no fishy odors. We tried a few different tacos and the Baja fish taco had a bit too much slaw on top which kind of took away from the other ingredients but overall everything else was solid. Definitely would recommend this spot for small bites and drinks!

This place was incredible from start to finish! Such a fun artistic atmosphere. Great service. The drinks were all creative and delicious- not overly sweet, just the way we like them. Every item we ordered off the menu was a home run- we will be going back to try more. We got a bunch of Mexican and sushi rolls for the table to share and were so glad we got to sample so many things. The sushi rolls were all very creative and delicious, out of the ordinary sushi rolls. The tacos were perfect and I have never eaten a better torta! Our kids enjoyed everything with us, including the mocktails. This place deserves a star! Can't wait to visit Charleston again to return here!

I recently visited Charleston for our birthday getaway and this was the first place. I stopped and got some food. It was really close in the neighborhood that I was staying so we were able to walk to it. We went during happy hour wish a happy hour from 4 to 6. They had a new appetizer which was the calamari and pork belly and I decided to try it. It was pretty good, but I will say that it was overpriced for the portion size. I believe I paid 22 or $23 for it. The margarita was also on the happy hour menu. And it was a great price and tasted delicious. It's for my entrée. I got the brisket nachos, which was an amazing portion for the price of $20. I found it interesting that they used Gouda cheese, extra cheese a choice on their different tacos and nachos. I thought it was an interesting mix of flavors because the spot is a Asian Mexican fusion. I really enjoyed everything that I had. I love the ambience inside. It's a very cool spot. Loved all the different pictures on the wall. And the service was really good. We asked the young lady about the different items before we ordered and she gave a really honest opinion. And I really appreciated that. I would definitely come back and try some more items when I'm back in town!

I'll preface my review by saying I definitely would come back and try this again. Maybe I just didn't order the right things. I was super excited to try this spot because it's a mix of my favorite things - Mexican and sushi! The queso was very good but I didn't love the seasoning on the chips, it was a bit overpowering. The fried pickles were delish! I ordered a smoked chicken taco - there was a ton of slaw on it, like way too much, and the chicken flavor was good but SO rich that I couldn't finish it. I ordered a shrimp tempura roll and it was very good but was missing cucumber. My friend also got the same roll and hers had cucumber in it. A mistake for sure but I was disappointed. However the atmosphere and service of this spot is awesome! They were able to accommodate a large group of 12 and was fast and friendly. Like I mentioned before, I would definitely try this place again but would order different things.

I think I need to give this place another shot. I was super unimpressed with the food but it has such great ratings. The meat in the tacos was super dry and bland. The bun bao were good and I'd definitely order them again. Dessert tasted like a grocery store frozen cake. I'll go back and update my review because again, everyone seems to love them place.

Food was delicious, our server was fantastic. We enjoyed the happy hour and I was happy they had vegan options (impossible taco) I had a veggie role and a taco salad! All was very good

Went here for the yelp elite Halloween party and it did not disappoint. Tons of sushi and tacos to choose from. They had Halloween themed drinks and a DJ. Could not have asked for a better place to celebrate Halloween

We had such a great time at the Halloween party hosted at Mesu! I was always a little scriptural of the Japanese Mexican fusion concept but it honestly works so well. Everything I tried was so yummy and the staff was so kind and accommodating. Over all 10/10. I definitely intend on visited here for dinner another time.

Holy wow. Best stop on our road trip. A marriage between our two favorites: Mexican and Japanese. There are wayyyy too many tasty options. We went with the avocado tomatillo salsa, queso, Baja fish taco, and street corn and I would recommend every single one. Social distancing in full effect and friendly staff who treated us like old friends. We're going back tomorrow for more! read more

We went for a bachelorette party, as reservations are kinda tough but I would come back to this restaurant every time I come back to Charleston for the vibes and service. The music was fantastic, servers are awesome, and the food was good! I'm sure it can get tiring serving bigger parties all the time but the servers just seemed to have a good time and be happy to be there. read more

What a complete let down. I dined here in 2021 and had a wonderful experience with attentive service and delicious food. I returned and couldn't believe how poorly this dinner went! I had a Tuesday reservation which was unnecessary because it was totally empty aside from a couple patrons at the bar. There were more employees than customers at the time of my meal. We were seated and handed room temperature water glasses from the host stand which was kind of strange... how long was the water waiting there? It took a while for a server to come to the table and it seemed like he was annoyed we were there! I ordered a margarita and a few sips in noticed a hair... it was black and curly. Definitely not mine. My sushi was average at best. My boyfriend ordered tacos (plural) and asked for a cheese to be left off. Server stated "our stuff is pre-mixed so we can't do that." When served, my boyfriend received one small taco closed with two clothes pins... it also took a trip to the bathroom to realize there were specials. The specials were listed on a poster in there, but our server couldn't bother to mention them. Almost everything we ordered could have been special eligible (margarita, chips, taco) but we didn't know until it was too late. We were still eating chips when the server took them back. Our dinner was less than 30 minutes. Rushed, unwelcome, and just a total waste of money! read more

My husband and I wanted to try a new place and decided on Mesu. We went last night and it was packed!! This place was smaller than I thought, we wanted a table but settled for the bar since we didn't want to wait 45 minutes. We got the queso for the appetizer. It was a little too thin for my liking but not bad. We split the sushi platter for the entree and my husband enjoyed all of the rolls. I, on the other hand, liked all but the Mesu roll. I'd maybe go back on a less crowded day. read more

The Nachos!!! Simply amazing. I don't eat red meat often but when I do I'm ordering the beef nachos at Mesu in Charleston, SC. After running the Cooper 10k there was not better way then to celebrate with sushi and nachos. Drinks were great as well. We had a piña colada and a smoked "Devils" cocktail. Great place. The food is great - the management is horrible. We went for a birthday dinner with a party of 6. At 1 hour and 40 minutes we were asked to leave, because we had been there longer than 1 hour and 15 min. Nowhere on the reservation or the website does it state a time limit on the table. We ordered several appetizers, multiple rounds of drinks, 6 meals, and 2 desserts. Our total bill was over $500 and we were asked to leave. After talking to the manager, he was indifferent about there not being a posted time limit. We were a quiet, easy table, spending quite a bit of money. We will absolutely not be back, and would have picked a different place to enjoy a birthday dinner with friends had we known. When we said "we will not be coming back" he simply said "that's fine". read more

Let me be real clear - you are doing yourself a complete disservice if you fail to check out this spot. Stupid good food. Great service. In fact, 5 stars is insulting. 7, minimum. Even in a foody city like Charlie South - this is a must. Pork Carnitas Clothespin Taco is served with pumpkin seeds. Yes, you read that right. Freaking pumpkin seeds. On a damn taco. Oh then you get mind blowing sushi. Don't over think this one. I had two nights in charleston for work. I came here twice. And I hate doing that. Literally have anxiety attacks by failing to try different spots. And you don't need a Xanax for this. read more

Intended to stop in for a beer and taco while waiting for reservation at Peninsula Grill. That changed quickly though considering food and charm of server and ended up canceling res at other place. Lauren was perfect - very attentive, complimented with humor and great dialogue. Food was amazing. Sauce on crispy chicken taco was immediate throwback to Hawaii in the 90s, jerk wings, perfect and sushi - fantastic. Whatever you'll paying Lauren, do more. Great server to keep. read more

MESU on King Street in Charleston is a great place for all things Mexican, Sushi, and drinks. I like having all of these things in one place and they make it work very well. Everything on the menu is delicious and flavorful. I like the atmosphere here as it is relaxed and fun. The service here is really good and they work hard to make sure that you are taken care of. He has such a wonderful demeanor and pays great attention to detail, not to mention he knows this town like the back of his hand so he has recommendations for days! I'm giving Mesu 5 stars. I have a lot of dietary restrictions due to a severe autoimmune disease. The staff was extremely accommodating, The chef (Matt) even came to our table to talk to me about my restrictions. I ordered the sushi and they omitted the items I couldn't eat. Matt even made a special Sashimi appetizer for me. I would definitely eat at this restaurant again. read more

iwas in chs for the weekend and found this little food place in downtown charleston. the service amazing, the food well prepared, good selection of drinks and what really catch my attention was this dish on the picture, barbacoa nachos. they really gave a twist on the way to eat nachos, good job , something so simple (nachos) could be so delightful!! bravo!! read more

A little hipster taco sushi bar. Don't let that scare you because it was amazing. Two aides of the menu, one side Mexican and the other side Pseudo Japanese/Sushi. We ordered a lot of the menu. We did not like the duck confit rolls. They were dry and the actual concept is good but the flavor profile was a little weird. But the other items, the sushi, the rolls, the tacos very delicious. I thought the shrimp taco would be a nightmare based on the description but it was absolutely my most favorite taco. My husband loved the deep fried pork taco. It was so unique. He wanted to take some home. Overall, great service, wonderful staff, unique and fun atmosphere, and delicious food! World definitely try again when in the area. read more

The eclectic menu offers a variety of delicious options. We had the barbacoa taco, along with two of the sushi items. All of it was very good. The taco was very flavorful and contained a large amount of beef. The service was also quick and attentive. They had an interesting cocktail menu with margaritas and sake. The only drawback is that it is very loud. We did like the music though. It is a very casual and lively restaurant. We enjoyed it and will be back! read more

Mesu stood out to me because of its unique menu, serving both Mexican dishes and sushi - which happen to be two of our favorites! We made a reservation for 6:30pm but since it was a rainy chilly day, we stopped by about 45 minutes early to get out of the cold and see if we could be seated early. The host was very accommodating and worked with the manager to get us seated which we really appreciated. Our server's name was Abby and she was so sweet! Very attentive and shared lots of helpful local recs with us. We bonded over both being from MD. To start, my husband and I shared the chips and guac - the chips were soggy for the most part and the guac did not seem that fresh, but when we ordered more chips, they tasted a lot better! My husband ordered two tacos - the Crispy Chicken Taco (which I also ordered) and the Barbacoa Braised Beef Taco. We shared the Tiger Roll. Everything was tasty and I felt like I had more than enough to eat. Around 7pm it started to get a little loud and the music was turned up which we didn't mind but didn't expect - seems like it becomes a fun college hang out Saturday nights. read more

Mesu was an unexpected pleasure that I wandered into. A person I walked by mentioned Mexican sushi and after hearing that it's hard to pass that description up. To start I had the ahi tuna crudo which was the perfect bite of pickled onions, fried onion strings, and fresh cut tuna. For dinner we had the Lobster Rangoon Roll..unfortunately no pictures. The roll tasted exactly as described..it was basically Lobster Rangoon but as sushi. If you like cream cheese and lobster how can you go wrong no matter how that is deep fried!? All of this was accompanied by a frozen Mango Margarita which had mango purée frozen inside! Great place and great service! read more

It might be better to do food handoffs at the open corner to the side so the waitress didnt have to reach high and over customers although maybe it is different when it is busy since I was the only one at the bar. The food itself was delicious although I must admit I can't tell the difference between normal sushi. I would rate this as normal sushi. To put things in perspective bad sushi would have dried out rice or fish that tastes a bit off in a bad way. Amazing sushi would be something that just tastes so different but in a good way. We have never had Black Tobiko (infused with squid ink), so we ordered Green and Black. The waitress got it wrong and gave us Red instead of Block . We should have sent it back, but we do like the red so we kept it. BIG MISTAKE. Normally a red Tobiko has a slight smokey flavor, but this was so over the top I wasn't sure if it was unique flavor to this restaurant or bad fish eggs. The wife thought so little of it she spit it out. The Green wasn't bad, but we were already on a downhill slide Next was two Eel handrolls which we normally love. Mine was OK, but The wife's Eel looked, and she said tasted raw and so this was another dish she could not eat. Next on the not so great list was the Ginger. Something else we normally love, but this Ginger was an odd darker shade pink to Red and had an funny taste to it. The Rainbow Roll was not bad, but I personally never had it with Shrimp. I am assuming they use Shrimp to lower the cost, but my preference isn't to have Shrimp as one of my fishes on a Rainbow roll. The spider roll we order was decent, but could have used some Eel Sauce on it. We tried something new for us which was the Salmon Tempura Roll. This consisted of Salmon tempura, crab, cucumber, avocado, masago, teriyaki. Neither of us have had Salmon tempura so it was not only unique but very good. We both loved the light crunch of the tempura fired Salmon. It has been many years since we ordered salmon skin, so we got 2 hand rolls. This was the star of the night. The roll was loaded with wonderful crispy salmon skin with Masago, scallion, spicy mayo. The wife usually does not like spicy mayo, but in this case, it paired really nice with the crunch of the skin. So yea some good, some medium, and some really bad.

I had a really disappointing experience at Misu in Charleston. They were actively advertising a $10 Tuesday menu online and even had signage for it posted in the bathroom, which I'll be including in my review photos. We made our reservation for 6:00 p.m., well within the advertised promotion timeframe that was supposed to last until 7:00 p.m. From the beginning, there was confusion and inconsistency from our server. When we first asked about the $10 Tuesday menu, she claimed she didn't know what we were talking about. As the meal went on, her answers kept changing--first it wasn't a real promotion, then much later (after we were already more than halfway through our meal), she suddenly mentioned that a $10 shrimp tempura roll was available. The information kept shifting depending on when we asked, which felt incredibly frustrating and disorganized. At one point, she even brushed off the confusion by saying she was "having a blonde moment," which felt unprofessional given the circumstances. Despite us asking about the promotion throughout the meal, there seemed to be constant delays in getting a clear answer from management. Then, at 7:01 p.m., after we had spent the entire hour trying to clarify the deal, the server suddenly pointed out that the promotional timeframe had passed anyway. This felt especially frustrating considering we had arrived on time and had been actively trying to resolve the issue the whole time. When the manager finally got involved, he stated they were "not doing that" promotion, despite the clear false advertising online and within the restaurant itself. He claimed he had no control over the website and only said he would address the bathroom signage. At no point did he genuinely acknowledge the misleading advertising or take accountability for how deceptive this was for customers. To make matters worse, there was an automatic 25% service charge added, which also felt excessive and poorly communicated. They eventually sent out some old, cold churros with hardened chocolate sauce, which felt more like an afterthought than a meaningful resolution and only added to the disappointment. Overall, this experience felt misleading, poorly managed, and frustrating from start to finish. Between the false advertising, inconsistent communication, lack of accountability, automatic fees, and underwhelming food and service, I would not recommend Misu. He bluntly told us we had overstayed, with people waiting for our table. This abrupt announcement was both shocking and demeaning, especially considering the nature of our visit and the considerable amount we had spent. When I confronted him to express our displeasure, noting the absence of any such time restrictions stated during the booking process and the absurdity of enforcing such a limit on a $500 meal, his response was dismissively matter-of-fact. His lack of empathy and unwillingness to accommodate a peaceful resolution to the situation only further dampened what should have been a joyous celebration. His parting words, upon hearing we wouldn't be returning, were a nonchalant "that's fine." It was clear that customer satisfaction was not on the agenda at [Restaurant Name]. This place is amazing!!!! My BF and I travel to a new state each month and for the month of October we're in Charleston. We asked some local friends for recommendations and this was one we chose for his 30th birthday. We've been to a lot of recommended restaurants during our travels but this place stands out! My BF likes Sake / sushi / seafood and I love margs / tacos / Mexican so it was the perfect mix. He got sushi and I got tacos and they were both sooooo good! (He's picky with sushi and loved it!) Our waitress Natalia was amazing. She was so sweet and recommended sake to his preferred taste! She went out of her way to bring over a shot and dessert for his birthday and had him ring the gong ( a lot louder than we thought lol) Overall, 10/10 highly recommed! Disappointed with our experience at Mesu. We went for the Restaurant Week deal with a party of six, and the lack of communication about their policies was frustrating. When making the reservation over the phone, no one mentioned the one-check policy or the auto-gratuity of 25%. Even when we were seated, there was no heads-up. This led to an unexpected increase in our bill by nearly $200. To make matters worse, the food was underwhelming--just mid-tier at best and not worth the price tag. Transparency is crucial when it comes to such policies, and I feel like it's the norm to be made aware ahead of time rather than surprised at the end. Only had 2 nights in Charleston SC and the family had such a great time the previous evening, it was decided to go back here and sit at the bar again. Luck for us a group of 4 had just left. We sat down in just about the same spot as the previous day. We had Mike serving us at the bar and couldn't have been any nicer. Two of us ordered the same sushi again, 1 changed it up slightly and my wife who doesn't really care for Sushi, ordered the Tsunami Roll that she had a slice of mine the previous evening. We are staying at the Hyatt Place around the corner from Mesu. We tried the Lobster Rangoon Roll which was probably one of the best rolls I've ever had. Bartender was very helpful in menu selection and really knowledgeable. He also recommended the clothes pin taco and the fish tacos which we tried as well. 2 days later we went back and had Mike and Nathan as our bartenders. Mike also gave the same recommendations and suggested the Shrimp and Chorizo taco which was delicious. He also had a ton of knowledge about tequilas. Also, the street corn was excellent! First time here!! We are from Myrtle beach and thought it was pretty interesting to have Mexican and sushi in the same restaurant, but the food was great!! My boyfriend and I were absolutely starving and happened to stumble upon this place late at night. We got the trio dip app with chips, one of each taco, and the taco salad. Everything was AMAZING! We were actually fighting over the chips and dip. I've been craving it every day it was so good. Doesnt look like much from the outside but let me just say if you give this place a shot you are in for a treat. The food and service is absolutely through the roof. I was honestly surprised how much I enjoyed the weird combination of Mexican and Japanese food. Me and my girlfriend of 2 years came and here were greeted by a waitress by the name of Natalie. I went here with my boyfriend on a Thursday night. We made reservations for a table but decided to sit and the bar instead. We started off with chips and queso and the street corn, both were delish. We also ordered the egg roll sushi and it was also amazing. I had two cocktails, the Mesu margarita and the expresso marg. I preferred the classic margarita over the expresso. Overall we had a great time and loved the music they played. I highly recommend this place if someone's looking for a chill yet fun atmosphere. read more

This place is awesome! Mike the bartender is the best! Looks out for his customers helping with food, tequila, and even recommends other fun bars and restaurants on King Street. Tonight was our first visit to Mesu and we will definitely be back! We are visiting from out of town and thought the menu looked interesting. The food was delicious and the service was even better! Natalie took great care of us and went above and beyond to make sure our picky daughter had a dinner that she enjoyed. My husband had 3 tacos and I had the lobster roll, all were absolutely amazing! This fun new restaurant on King is amazing! It's one of those rare finds where you can go in casual or dressy and have a great time. The service, food, and drinks are delish! I had the closed pin tacos, poke tower, and of course Churros!! The make your own Margarita was fun, especially since I love mine with grand marina! Can't wait to go back!! Interesting blend of Mexican and Sushi items. My wife was pleasantly surprised to see a Quinoa Taco on the menu, and she loved it! I'm more of a carnivore, so I had the Shrimp/Chorizo Taco and it was equally tasty. We also enjoyed one of their sushi rolls. Definitely a place to stop at for a meal when in Charleston! Oh, and if you remember, make a reservation as they can be really busy during the dinner hours. read more

YALL. I am a sushi guru and this place is hands down one of the best if not the best in Charleston. Make sure to say hi to the awesome Sushi Chefs Angel and Ian who are THE BEST and make the experience wonderful for all (even those who don't like sushi) they make it work. It was such a good vibe inside. The food was amazing and the tsunami roll was the best sushi roll i've ever had. The service was AMAZING, everyone in there was very nice. Great little Asian fusion place with a fish taco to die for. The Hawaiian fish bowl was amazing, it was loaded with fresh fish. Highly recommend from someone who knows fish tacos and fresh fish.
