My god, this food is incredible - reminds me of truly authentic Dominican food. This place is literally a hidden gem. It's unfortunate that the food tastes good at this establishment. I had a terrible service experience the last time I ordered from here. It takes over an hour for them to prepare their food, which I have come to accept. However I stood at the counter waiting to pick up my order for 10 minutes. When one of the several workers finally acknowledged me, I told her I was here to pick up my order. She asked me if I speak Spanish and unfortunately I do not and when I said no, she proceeded to ignore me and continue what she was doing. It made me feel extremely uncomfortable and I continued to wait till one of the other workers would assist me. Then she proceeded to tell me I owe them money when I paid for this order online. I was very disappointed with my order which I placed through Uber eats. I paid $14.95 for Oxtails, and yet after an hour of anticipation (I was really, really looking forward to my food), my order arrived with rice, beans, but no oxtails. I was agitated that I hadn't even received so much as a call to let me know that what I ordered was unavailable. Thankfully, Uber was able to reimburse me. This isn't the first time this has happened. Before, I've ordered food, and small parts of my order, such as appetizers/sides (Maduros, Tostones, Empanadas, etc.), were missing without warning, but this is the first time the main part of my order wasn't included. In both cases, the Uber driver was not at fault. Meson Tropical has great food (maybe some of the best in the area), and their pricing is very reasonable. Called at 8:30pm to get a specific item which they said was freshly made & I was advised that I had to wait a bit to let it cool off before picking it up. I inquired about their hours & they stated they were open until 10:00pm. I get there at approximately 9:10pm at which time a lady advised me through the window pane that they were closed. I advised her that I called and she just stated we're closed! I can't believe they seriously just wasted my time. They have definitely lost future customers. Probably some of the best mofongo I have had including when I have it in the Dominican Republic. They aren't stingy with their portions either and I love coming here. I always get their chicharron de puerco (fried pork belly) which is like pork candy it's unreal. Their chicharron de pollo is outstanding and not what I'm used to (breaded like fried chicken) but that's ok because it is phenomenal. For my main course I get the pork mofongo because it is the best I have had in a long time. Squeeze some lime and hot sauce and I'm telling you that stuff could win awards. I however took a star off because the empanadas were very disappointing. I went for lunch but they tasted like "yesterday's " leftover batch and I'm not ok with that. I hate to waste food but you give that to staff to take home at the end of the night not heat up the next day. Came here last night on a double date for some really good Dominican comfort food. And we got just that. Authentic, Dominican comfort food. It was like my grandma cooked it all. I even drank a Country Club Frambuesa soda which I haven't had in years!!! That soda is a Dominican staple! It's just pure sugar and some red food coloring but there's a sense of nostalgia there; it brought me back to my childhood. So the food-just so delicious. We ordered meat empanadas to start...let's just say we each ordered more. So good. Then as the entrees, my bf and our friends all ordered the Churrasco steaks and I the Churrasco Mofongo. Everything was great. I even ate the leftovers (which were plentiful) this morning for breakfast. The service was not terrible. The waitress was nice. Ok so let me start by saying I walked in here the other day 3 minutes to closing and got really good food considering it was the end of the work day and all that. I ordered 1/4 chicken arroz con gandules and sweet plantains. So since I got good food I decided to get food delivered. I placed the order via yelp and ordered the same as before but this time relleno de papa an empanada and garlic bread they called me shortly after and informed me they ran out of chicken so I got the pernil instead. I ordered at 7:20 and received the food at 8:53. The food was warm. No biggie. This time around the food was not good at all. Like a 4 out of ten. Everything tasted like olive juice. The food here is really good and while the workers seem pleasant, their customer service is lacking. I've been ordering from the restaurant for over 2 years. Their delivery service always takes forever, 1-1.5 hours on average, but the food was always good so we'd deal with it. However, tonight we ordered over $50 in food. 2 skirt steak orders and I asked for an order of Chicken Mofongo. When I looked over at the receipt I noticed that it said "Chicharon Mofongo" which is pork. I unfortunately don't eat pork. I immediately called the restaurant and the young woman asked for my receipt number and when she pulled up my order she mentioned that our receipt stated Chicharon. I understood that but mentioned I asked for chicken. Rather than apologizing for their error it seemed like they were trying to prove that I ordered the wrong item. She then mentioned that I needed to send back the wrong item before they could send me the correct order. While I get some people might try to scam to get a free meal but being a long standing customer and having spent over $50, you'd think they would be more accommodating. Mind you, the original order was placed before 7pm, called back to correct the order before 8, and only received my food after 9pm. I handed the delivery driver the incorrect food, got my chicken, and plan on looking for another Dominican restaurant to order from when we're craving. read more

The food is good but I'm not sure I'll ever get it delivered again. I've ordered at least 15 times from this restaurant and have ordered rice and black beans every single time and they neither bring it nor call to say they don't have it. Only once maybe twice out of 18 orders have I gotten the beans I ask for. They always send rice and peas instead. I've even tried saying please in the comments. I've tried ordering different days of the week thinking maybe they only serve it on certain days. I don't know what it is about black beans why I don't deserve to have it, but I'll just do delivery from another restaurant instead. The only reason I keep hoping and trying is because I like the food and it's nearby. If it's not actually something they plan to make, they should remove it from the Eat 24 menu. If I I'm in the mood, maybe one day I'll walk over there and dine in so I can assure I'm getting what I ordered. read more

Of course, they have your typical spanish selections ranging from pernil, bistec, & chorizo. Again, mediocre at best. Although I will say this, the convenience factor for me as a patron is A1. I ordered delivery for the first time at Meson. I ordered the mofongo with shrimp, half rotisserie chicken, side order of white rice, black beans, fried plaintains and beef and chicken empanadas. The mofongo with shrimp was very good. The rotisserie chicken was very dry...even the dark meat was dry...didn't think it was possible to dry out dark meat. Since moving from Brooklyn, we wanted some good Spanish food. Took a chance and ordered for pick up here yesterday evening. Got the fried pork belly, whole baked chicken with yellow rice and peas, black beans, sweet plantains, avocado and fried yuca with red onions and garlic. Grubhub said the wait was over an hour. I was already in the lot waiting. I called and spoke to the owner Josie and she was kind enough to put a little rush to my order and personally brought it out for me. Got home and as we took out all the food, noticed the sweet plantains were missing. Called and spoke with Josie's brother and they were really very nice and kept apologizing. I live in Cranford and was already settled in to eat and could not go back. They told me they will take care of me next time which I am fine with because the food is FANTASTIC. Food- 5 stars The food is always good. We've been ordering here for years and have tried most things on the menu. The empanadas are tasty... Beef, chicken and shrimp. The tostones are yummy and the garlic sauce it comes with is even better (if they don't forget to include it in the order), the tilapia is plentiful and delicious. The PERNIL is out of this world. The masitas are always tasty and you get a generous portion. The beef stew is wonderful as well as the oxtail. For dessert, the tres leche is phenomenal and authentic and good to the last bite. I wish they would put it in a container where it doesn't drip onto everything in the bag. Service -4 stars Service in the restaurant is okay. The owner is pleasant and courteous. The younger ones are not as professional but polite enough. Delivery-1 star As I've said above, I've been ordering for years but many times when we really want Meson but are super hungry, we will order something else even though we really want their food. And this is why...delivery time is ridiculous. It's beyond ridiculous at times. Sometimes the food comes and it's not hot. And the worst part is some times, you don't get everything you asked for, particularly the sauces that go w the empanadas and tostones.
