Came here last night. I didn't know too much about it, but thought would give it a shot to see what it's about. It's super small, would not take an hour to go through. A few photo opportunities. A few cool artist sensory displays.

This place popped up on my Facebook feed. Showed my friend and she was down. The place is a little tricky to find but you have to pay attention. It's a small place. All the displays are interactive and have signs. They all were very interesting!!

Came to Mesmerize with my 2 year old as it's an all-ages activity and children under 3 are free. My son was so surprised when we entered! He's never seen anything like it. When you first step in, you'll first notice all the lights and colors. Super cool atmosphere giving an art gallery-ish vibe. My favorite part was the wishing wall area. You're able to read all the written wishes from past visitors and write one yourself. Overall, I think it's a cool sensory activity for kids. As an adult, I wouldn't be interested. The space is very small and only takes a few minutes to get through. My son wanted to stay for a whole hour and spent it looking, feeling and playing through all the different installations. Overall, I'd say it's a great way to introduce kids to art in such a fun space. I don't think adults would spend more than 20 minutes there lol.

Came here today with my wife, son and dad. Truly unique experience. A blend of science and art and the exhibits have great ingenuity. Highly recommend this museum. Just be advised that no strollers are allowed; I carried my son in a baby sling carrier without an issue.

First things first: They were very, very safe, clean, and distanced when we were here. Yay! Now for the review... Loved this experience! When you enter you have a second of confusion before you can orient yourself and then you're just in awe. There are beautiful & sometimes trippy environments contained within, and you have ample time to view them all. The amount of people per hour is kept small so that you can keep distanced and have time "alone" with each part of the multiverse. If you like taking selfies, this is definitely a place for you--even bug your friends to take pictures of you with the incredible scenery. There's a little story to it, too, and it's very cleverly written. Altogether I enjoyed very second of it; a good bit of it was interactive, which was a delight. There was plenty of hand sanitizer available. Thanks, Mesmerize! We dig you. (-:

A must-see attraction nestled in the super convenient nook between downtown proper and the east side. Mesmerize is inside Native Hostel (a uniquely designed spot with a cafe, bar, and fantastic people watching within). It's a homegrown creation with contributions from all locally based artists, and the art featured is trippy, whimsical, and fun. There are interactive installations throughout this self-guided adventure and plenty of things to look at and play with. Ultimately a very calming and awe-inspiring experience. I mean...it was cool, yes BUT pretty pricey considering it takes about 15 minutes to get through...the exhibits are neat enough but I definitely dont think it was worth the price. It's also inside of a bar so idk if its a kid friendly as they suggested. read more

Disappointing. Not worth the $25. The rooms that you do go through are cool, but it's all quite short. The idea behind it all is great, but the $25 and on top of it being way short -- I don't recommend. read more

Fun place for a date! It's a little smaller than I had expected so it's definitely good to take your time. Grabbing drinks air whatever your drug of choice is- beforehand is a good strategy. Once you're in it's a bunch of fun stuff though. Lots of good ops for the perfect profile photo on social media! read more

It's in Native Hostel so that's already a plus. We arrived and were warmly greeted by Stephanie who was, by herself, worth the cost of any tickets to the installation. Once inside the installation had its moments and instagramable angles but the space was smaller than I thought. Best part was the "dj" booth!!! Worth checking out since it gets you out and can be followed up with coffee or a stiff drink. read more

This place was super cool an fun to be in decided to get some tickets so my friends an I can go in and take pictures, videos,. It's a fun place to go with a group of friends or go on a date. Turrell is a great living artist and this is my favorite of his works. Plus, the benches inside are heated. It's also really beautiful when rain is falling through the oculus. The light show starts at a different time every night according to the time of sunset. It is about an hour and 5 minutes long. You have to walk onto the roof of the student activity center at UT Austin to find it, but someone will be there to check you in and answer questions. The light show is free but it fills up so I recommend making a reservation online.

We are blessed to have 2 installments in Houston and another in Austin. This one is on the 3rd floor of the SAC (student activity center). It is open to the public, and does not require an ID to enter. When you get to the 3rd floor just make a right and walk outside onto the rooftop patio area. They do have reservations online, but there isn't anyone there to take them. Just like many of the other exhibits, you are there to observe the sky. It usually is very peaceful and quiet. But you are more than welcome to take pictures. Come as close to sunset as possible if you want to see the many colors of the sky along with the interior lighting.

In East Austin, you can find this complex full of art studios of various mediums sprawling over several buildings. They have a big parking lot but if you go during Open Canopy, we saw people waiting for spots. There aren't enough spaces for all the humans! However after parking, the area doesn't feel congested with human traffic so that's a good thing. Canopy has their very own coffee shop full of drinks & eats, so fear not if you come here hungry. Check the Sa-Ten listing for reviews on the eatery/beanery. Again I was lucky enough to be in town during Open Canopy which happens the first Saturday of every month from 1-4pm. I found there near opening and found it only got busier as the day went on. Not only were many of the Art Studios open, but also most of the shops, plus they had live music! I was not expecting a DJ, nor to see so many cute dogs roaming around, but was pleasantly surprised. There were so many talented artists with their pieces on display. I took a couple business cards and hope to buy a few things. I was happy to see so many forms of art for sale, as well, with some real creativity and fun on display. Not just paintings, but jewelry, decor pieces, 3d works, weaving, tons of different types of things. I saw many of the artists eagerly chatting about their work, while my introvert self shuffled through each studio. And that was okay, too, by the way. Artists were pleased to just say hi & bye, definitely no sales- stuff going on here. It was truly like walking thru art galleries. People watching was fun here, too. This event is called Open Canopy which happens on the first Sat of each month which is such a nice community event. Basically Canopy features a huge amount of artists in this artsy compound, countless studio offices in a handful of buildings (I believe there were 5 areas you could go to and some were occupied). Definitely peruse and even pick up some pieces if you fancy anything, there's something for everyone here. Pottery, paintings, sculptures, textiles, and much more artsy offerings. It feels like an elevated art fair you get to walk through.

The gallery celebrates Texas women artists as well as women artists in general, two subjects that have vastly been overlooked for centuries upon centuries by art circles. I've discovered remarkable talents such as Lisa Ludwig and Sarah Lasley through a show called "Sugarcoated" back in May, which, pointing back to point #1, served pink champagne, frosted animal cookies and doughnut holes instead of the stuffy wine and cheese fare more typically associated with a gallery opening. 3. They encourage new talent, giving several opportunities a year to participate in showings alongside relatively established artists. For $40 you can join as a friend of the organization and have four images of your own art included in their online slide registry project. I believe there is a discounted rate for students and educators. 4. The giftshop kicks ass. Can I say ass? Most of it is tangible, practical art made by local artists or women artists elsewhere. Some of it is less than practical, such as the felt orange bird with pink feathers spewing out of the tail I purchased last Saturday. There's a fantastic selection of books on women artists and some really unique jewelry. Why would you buy anything from a department or corporate store again with such quality, and the money going directly back into the hands of the lady that made them?

It's a lot more spacious in the back than it seems, opening up to plenty of seating where groups were seen chatting or playing tabletop games. There weren't many vendors but a great wizard was there giving away little fortunes that was very wholesome. Overall, great spot for a date or for one of their themed nights. They showed us around their garden and then brought us back to their museum which was located in the back of their property. This museum definitely keeps Austin weird. Jen and Scott eagerly told us stories behind their collections. There was a strand of Willie Nelson's hair, parts from the original Ferris wheel, a taxidermy flamingo head and so much more. She honestly made the experience great, and I would give her 5 stars any day. We were allotted a few open studio hours during the course to come in and work independently. These were pretty strictly monitored, and the weekend time slots tended to fill up quickly (understandably) For the price that I paid, I was pretty pleased with taking classes here however I would add some caveats: 1. There are a lot of restrictions here (glazes are pretty limited, you cannot make pieces larger than 8 in, can't bring in most outside glazes that are runny) 2. There were a lot of different skill levels in my class. A majority of the students seemed to be repeating students from the previous cycle, and had a lot of wheel experience. There were only 1-2 people in my class who were beginners. If I hadn't already had some exposure to the wheel, I think I would've been completely lost as most of the class time was spent on demos that the class requested instead of set lessons. If the cost wasn't almost half of what other studios in town were charging, I would probably go to another studio because of the above reasons, but honestly the deal is too good to complain. If you're able to get off the waitlist and get a class here, I'd recommend trying it out if you have some experience already! Otherwise I would try to take a more beginner friendly class elsewhere first

The theater room is decent sized and you can see and hear pretty well. We were in row 3 or 4 to the right if on stage. The troupe was good and there were some clever songs. It is about an hour and while the murders do factor in its mostly about the growing city and political dealing. I know it's an art center first but two quick things. The chairs are awful. They took me out of the play several times as I could not get in a position that didn't cause pain. Two: I can go without a snack or food but I need liquids. Water, soda, something. If you don't want to sell it allow us to bring lidded bottles or Yetis. Yeti like cups wouldn't leave trash and would allow for less issues. But that said I really otherwise enjoyed this. Shana, the woman who married me, agrees place is very cool. The cast signed a book we had on the killings which was cool. The songs were mostly fun and entertaining. The cast did a good job and told a fun story in just an hour. There were a few things that felt a little out of place but overall it was a good time.

Best known these days for delightful children's programming, the ASRT also serves as a rentable events venue, the site of many interesting touring act performances, and the ongoing home of one of the oldest Freemason groups in the state, Austin Lodge #12. The building was constructed in 1871 as a German opera house called Turner Hall, and you'll still find many interesting architectural details that hint at the original use. There's even an official state historical marker medallion out front. The seats are comfortable and the room is gorgeous, from the old-time decor around the stage to the dreamy night sky on the ceiling and the priceless hand-painted antique backdrops. I really enjoy the intimate listening space and ease of movement out to lounges and the restroom, especially from the first row of the back of the theater. Parking for evening and weekend events is not too bad. There's a small surface lot at 1710 Colorado that is free for theater visitors after 5:30p and on weekends. If that doesn't work out, there is ample metered street parking managed by Texas Capitol (not by City of Austin) and a few private surface lots around with pay-on-site or reservations through ParkWhiz app. I usually don't have to walk more than a couple of blocks or pay more than 5 bucks. One thing that is not easy to do is to understand when upcoming public events are happening at ASRT. The theater's calendar lists only productions that they are managing directly (such as children's plays), and this is only a small sliver of what goes on here. However, if you are tuned into our local performing arts & culture scene, chances are that you'll see some upcoming events scheduled at ASRT and promoted through the hosting organization, such as SXSW, Sonic Guild, Russian Speaker Society of Austin, and others.
