I came here with a group for lunch on a weekend and were seated right away. I think this is my favourite Mexican restaurant I've tried so far! The food was great. The chicken chorizo chimichanga was very big, filled with cheese, with a crispy outside. The only downside to my visit was having to wait for the waiter to come to take our order. We were seated near the back, and we felt forgotten about. One of us had to walk to the front to kindly ask for someone to take our orders. However, the staff were very kind :) read more

We got the nachos to start. Amazing app, meat was authentic, the sauces paired well together but the nachos themselves were a tad stale. Definitely was a good app I rate it a 8/10. For the meal I got Birria tacos and they tasted great as well, although a lot of cilantro, 7/10 on the tacos. The spice level was good and thanks to the server I did not over do it. The service was good as well the food came out almost instantly and the drinks were tasty! Overall I give mesa a 7/10; there was definitely somethings that were not the 10/10 but nothing ever is. On return from a day trip to Paris, Brant, Ontario, we dined at Mesa in Hamilton. We had no reservation, but the hostess graciously took us in, which we later discovered was fortunate as the place was soon filling up and started turning walk-ins away. We ordered simple: a Pozole soup and a Gringa with chicken for mains and 2 beverages. Both dishes were triumphs of skills, patience and traditions: rich, saturated, well balanced flavors that married together still nothing overshadowed the others. The time and care showed in the 2 dishes. The soup, which came with your choice of crispy nachos or soft corn tortillas, was sufficient as a dinner as I wanted something small. The Gringa was filling, so order away if you are hungry. Food was reasonably priced per food quality/portion, location, service and ambiance. I was finally able to visit a friend and we decided to meet in Hamilton at one of her personal favourite spots Mesa. It's been so long since I went out for quality Mexican food at a restaurant so I was excited to try this spot out. We started with the grilled panela which was oaxaca cheese topped with pulled chicken and nacho chips to dip! For our mains, we each ordered a Barbacoa Chimichanga which I had never had before! my Date and I decided to check this place out great place to enjoy authentic mexican food, at the time we went I did enjoy the quality of the food but wasnt crazy about where they seated us..I was right across from the view of seeing all the work being done in the kitchen, wasnt the nicest view for date night and the table was close to the kitchen door. Parking is on the street in that area which can be challenging if its a busy day or night, so if you have to find parking be prepared to walk a bit to your location. read more

After being disappointed with Mezcal, we were referred to Mesa for more straight forward Mexican cuisine. Yes, it was more traditional, but still did not hit the mark for me. I found the food bland and salty in a preservatives / pre-packaged kind of way. Still on the search for excellent Mexican food in Hamilton, haven't quite found it yet. The restaurant itself is a nice dining experience. I would consider coming back for drinks and a snack, but probably not a whole meal. read more

I finally made it to Mesa! After so many pics on IG & friends urging me to try it. My boyfriend and I came to Mesa on a Saturday night. It seemed very busy when I inquired within but we were told we'd be seated quickly. We sat by the bar for about ~15 minutes and were able to order drinks while we waited for our table. AMBIANCE: 4/5 Mesa seems like an extremely small restaurant and very extremely popular. That means it's ALWAYS packed. The tables are very close together for them to maximize space. The decor inside is homey and comfortable. The bar itself is like a work of art - with different coloured liquor lining the walls. FOOD: 4/5 The food here is DELICIOUS 1. Nachos: I absolutely LOVED these nachos. We added ground beef with ours & it was plentiful + phenomenal. The chips they use were sturdy and crunchy. The only downside is they didn't use enough cheese so the lower layers were dry. 2. Barbacoa Burrito (Mild): This was HUGE. I ordered my burrito with the red sauce. The burrito was juicy and delicious with black beans, rice, and beef barbacoa. So much protein packed into one wrapping. I packed this up to be eaten as breakfast for Sunday 3. Steak Tacos (Mild): My boyfriend didn't like this as much as the rest of the meal. The steak was dry and a little bland. The rest of the plate was amazing however. Their black bean sauce is the best I've had in Hamilton. 4. Flan: The flan was okay. It was a little to sweet for me but it seems like a popular choice amongst other dinners. 5. Horchata: GET THIS. SERVICE 4/5 The service was great but also spotty. The restaurant was so packed and there was not enough workers to manage the crowd. Overall: 4.5/5 I've been craving the nachos since we left. Easily the best Mexican food I have had anywhere in Canada. Do not come here if you want flavourless food and do not appreciate the effort put into making good food with fresh ingredients. I started with green tomatillo steak soup, and wow the best way to describe it is a flavour explosion. The onion, gentle spice and lime give this girl the happy approval for knowing I made the right choice to drive out this way for a visit. Comes with homemade chips. We also had some guac to start, also with homemade chips. My only thing to nitpick here is I prefer a bit more citrus and jalapeno, but it was still fantastic. Now the star of the show, the chicken chorizo chimichanga done at their hot level. I asked for it enchilada style which they don't advertise but were happy to do. A perfect portion of meat, cheese, chimi goodness. Heat level hot is actually hot, bonus points for that. My dining partner had the beef chimi in medium and said lots of taste with perfect heat level. Great dining room and a cool street to go for a walk and enjoy a neighborhood vibe. Loved it. read more

Came here tonight for dinner just after 8pm. It was fantastic. Not quite sure what the relationship is with Mex-I-can, but for fans of that old stomping ground, they will love this place. Shortly after walking into the restaurant we were greeted by a young waitress. There were no tables left, so she asked if we wanted to put our names on the list or sit at the bar, we opted for the bar as we had drinks with friends at 9pm. Once a table opened up, she asked us if we wanted the table and we promptly moved. She could have left us at the bar, but didn't. Kudos to her for the wonderful service. I ordered the regular burrito with barbacoa beef in medium spice (I could have handled the hot) and my husband ordered the large burrito with chicken chorizo in mild spice, it's plenty hot. Thank goodness the waitress warned my husband of the spice level. Both our meals were wonderful and so tasty and fresh. I'd read reviews about poor service, but this was not what I experienced at all. Our food came out fast and hot, we were checked up on, and no one rushed us. While we stopped in specifically for their horchata (in which they didn't have tonight), the food was fantastic. Maybe next time. If you're in the area - check this place out! read more

Stopped in for a snack on a Thursday evening before heading to a concert. I've passed by here a ton of times but usually been on a Sunday when they're closed. Was so worth the wait! The Mr. and I had a couple of ice cold beers and shared a couple of starters. Food was super fresh with just the right amount of heat. We asked for spicy and it might have been a little hotter than expected but manageable. I felt the food was authentic and felt like I was back in Mexico! I loved that you are given a choice between corn and flour tortillas for the tacos. Service was a little slow and the bathrooms were a little odd. The floor was super sticky in the restroom and for those 2 reasons a star was taken away. I would definately recommend this place and look forward to returning to sample other offerings on the menu. read more

Came to Mesa at the recommendation of a friend. We came early before a movie. Strike 1 ordered nachos to start asked for NO BEANS and came loaded with beans. Waitress most interested that I know she asked for no beans. Totally threw kitchen under the bus. Who cares. Strike 2 my main course Steak burrito literally came COLD inside. I mean frosty to the touch. Again asked the waitress, and her response was "That is the way they make it. Sorry Mesa, I had high hopes and you came recommended. But even the person who reccomended you, who was with me can't believe what happened. Never again, and Mesa, please save your" Please give us another chance response " I won't be back. Honestly delicious Walked in and was really impressed by the decor and cleanliness. Our server was friendly and the food was a must eat. I had the chimichanga and he had the chicken tamales. Both came out quick, hot and as described. Loved the pico de giao, the guacamole was flavourful and beans were beans ... not overwhelmed but not disappointed. We got the hot chocolate spiced medium to go and it honestly blew my face off. Way hotter than we thought it would be, but it was stills delicious. I was disappointed in the lack of flavour in the Enchiladas. There was too much lettuce and tomato sprinkled all over everything. I had asked for my dish to be spicy hot and I don't know if the server ignored my request, or the chef in the kitchen is not tasting the food they put out. Went here with a friend who recommended we check it out (he ate here before). I ordered the regular-sized beef burrito with hot sauce and... it was 'JAM!' The portion was a lot bigger then I expected as I could barely finish it (but of course I did!). I kept hearing about how good the food was and to their credit they delivered the goods! Washed it all down with a Tecate cerveza, flush. Be forewarned as it gets incredibly busy here practically any evening of the week. Make a reservation in advance or go here during the day for lunch and you won't be disappointed. I absolutely love Mexican cuisine and I've been all over in search of a proper good one... Met here with a colleague at lunch time. Place was packed and literally just rotated people in and out of tables (that being said, we never felt rushed). The waitresses are pretty blah but they do their duty so I didn't really care. They have gluten free options for almost everything - pretty much whatever comes in a tortilla can be made gfree. I had quesadillas (which I haven't had in FOREVER!) with beef (barbocoa?) and it was phenomenal. My only wish was to have sour cream for dipping and the only time the waitress came by, my mouth was stuffed with food so I couldn't ask. The prices were reasonable (around $20) for the entree, refried beans, a tiny salad (which was essentially shredded lettuce) and rice. I swear Hamilton has the best restaurants. I'd recommend this place 100% read more

Terrible service. I've been 3 or 4 times now, and it always takes an extremely long time to have our drinks brought out. Half of the time, they don't even bring you water after saying they will. Also doesn't seem to have a system as to whom is actually serving you, because we always have at least two people serving us. The last time I went, they kept forgetting parts of our orders, along with people around us. The only good part about the restaurant is that the food is amazing! read more

I had heard of this place online a few weeks back so me and my boyfriend decided to drive from Toronto to Hamilton to check this place out. Upon arriving there was only one girl working the counter, Juana. Without offering us a menu, she told us what two items were on the menu that day and didn't mention their prices so we asked her what would she recommend we try as it was our first time at Mesa. She told us we should try the chicken burrito as the large is enough for two people to share so we agreed and ordered one serving of that. She ended up charging my boyfriend a little over $32 for one large burrito which we tipped on top of leaving the bill being around $38 which seemed strange to him so he asked me to check their prices online which ended up telling us that our meal should have been $13 instead of $32. We went back to her and asked for the receipt as he had paid credit and without even looking at the receipt she began to say " oh no, I have to refund you guys". We asked her why she had to refund us and she couldn't give us a straight answer and kept making excuses that did not add up on how she managed to overcharge us by that much all while avoiding eye contact with us for the rest of our time in the restaurant. Thankfully we caught this and got his money refunded. It seems to me that Juana saw that we weren't familiar with this restaurant and their prices and thought she could take advantage of us and pocket our money. It's unfortunate that this happened as the food tasted amazing but the poor service has left a permanent sour taste for us. If you do come here, watch out for the staff trying to take advantage of you. read more

Really great Mexican cuisine! I got a chimichanga and it was fried to perfection. The guacamole was nice and smooth too!

Awful service. I've never been kicked out of a place before after paying the bill (and I'm from Toronto!) but the waitress came over and rudely said that we needed to go because there are other people waiting to eat. We paid our bill, my friend went to the washroom, and then when she came back I was finishing my alcoholic beverage for 5 more minutes before the waitress came over. If I owned an establishment, I would want to know that my staff are encouraging paid guests to chug their alcoholic drinks so that they can dismiss them so rudely after they paid and no longer matter, rather than ensure they're digesting and leaving in a good state to get home safely. Again, we were sitting just there no more than 10-15 mins past paying the bill. I personally don't consider that a disrespect of time, but clearly this establishment had no issues disrespecting us.
