I found the rest of the bowl was a bit too saucy that it was a bit overwhelming. Carne Asada Bowl: The bowl came out way too greasy that the bottom of the bowl was quite oily. Hard to write this review. I have been to the downtown location several times found the tacos way better there-it was my first time trying the square one location. I came here craving their tacos especially In cod we trust which is a fish taco. The fish topped on the taco was barely any and the tacos were cold. Bummer bummer all the way. Next came the corn which is their signature appetizer. It was phenomenal as always. We also ordered the churros which are pretty good I would rate them a 7/10. The service was great. I've been to La Carnita a few times but this is a first for their patio. We got there around 6pm on a Friday just before dinner rush, however we still waited for around 30 mins. They don't have a text or call option like other places so you have to be in the area when they call your name. This can be super difficult especially when they tell you that the wait can take up to 90 minutes. They do have a few chairs out front for you to sit while you wait. We ended up getting the LC nachos ($21.95) to share between two people. I would say that the portion was quite good and can be enough to share between 4 people even. We then got 2 of the Achiote Chicken, Pollo Frito, and a In Cod We Trust. The Pollo Frito was definitely the best one with 2 big pieces of fried chicken and the sauce was amazing. However, the piece of cod was tiny! A lot smaller than the last time we came and it was quite bland compared to the other ones. Overall, the tacos are quite small. It usually takes me 3 to 4 bites to finish and I take pretty small ones. Each one is about the size of my hand. The waiter was great though, checked up on us the perfect amount of times and was super nice. Dimly lit and complete with a bar and rustic tinge, La Carnita is the ultimate date spot. My friend and I came in a Thursday night and were immediately seated. We shared a Mexican Street Corn, which cost $9.95 for two full cobs slathered with cream, cheese, spices, then grilled. The corn was tasty - the sweetness of the kernels contrasted beautifully with the saltiness of the crumbled cheese and the rich crema. It was a little messy to eat, but was a great appetizer! I then ordered the Baja shrimp taco and the spicy mushroom taco. I tried the shrimp one first, not wanting to mute and muddle my taste buds with the spicy mushrooms. The shrimp one was delicious! I loved that I had 3-4 chunks of fried shrimp, and the pickled kohlrabi balanced the tangy garlic mayo. I loved the bright pop and vibrant flavour that the kohlrabi imparted. The mushroom taco had a nice kick to it, though the flavours fell a little flatter. There was a pleasant earthiness, and I enjoyed the contrasting textures of the crispy shallots against the soft mushrooms. The taco fillings and flavours were delightful, but I really didn't enjoy the tortilla. It was grainy, bland, and also had a slightly stale aftertaste. Compared to the house-made ones offered at Campechano, these definitely paled in comparison and were quite disappointing. In fact, it was so jarring that I couldn't help but pause after my first bite - the flavour threw me off so much! Overall, I liked La Carnita, but wasn't impressed by their tortillas. I've had tacos at one of the La Carnita downtown locations before and also tried a taco kit from one of their other locations earlier this summer, so I was eager to see whether this location measured up. I'm happy to say that it did based on my recent visit here for my takeout order, which is great that the locations are consistent! I got the taco kit for about $33, which is a great price for everything that you get. It comes with your choice of protein like Mexican chorizo, chicken or vegan chicken, 10 tacos (hard or soft), as well as a whole bunch of toppings like lettuce, cheese, salsa, guacamole (awesome portion!), shallots, pickled onions and jalapeños. It also comes with sauces like chipotle mayo, cream sauce and hot sauce - all are delicious no matter which protein you order! I was happy with how everything tasted and it was great how this was enough for two meals for 2 people. When I'm in the area again, I look forward to trying even more items off their menu. I have only been to Square one a handful of times. I heard about the Food District from a friend of mine. When i saw the plans and what was opening up there, i only had eyes for La Carnita! We were heading home from Georgetown, so we decided to stop at the mall. The plan was, feed the kidlets at the food court and then go to La Carnita for lunch. We arrived just before 1pm on the last Saturday in April. It was packed and really busy, but it didn't take long to be seated by the hostess. Our server (i could kick myself for not remembering his name - but the music was way TOO loud!) was AMAZING! He was quick to take our orders, bring us drinks and our appetizers out. Explained the menu to us, offered some suggestions etc. Hubby & I ordered just a few items to try out: Mini Tostadas - little bites of heaven - literally! Black Bean, sesame, pomegranate, corn salsa & sprouts - super delish. We ordered 2 since our server explained that there are only 3 small tostadas a little bigger than a toonie per order. Tortilla Chips with Guacamole & Corn Salsa - tortilla sauce with seasoning that had a little kick. Our kids were disappointed as my 5 year old found them to be too spicy. This is where feeding them at the food court was a win for us! lol. The guac was fresh, the corn salsa had a good amount of heat with the sweet corn. I could've eaten them until closing. Well, it's cheap for a reason and in fact, I would consider it expensive for what you actually get lol. It's literally the size of a McDonald's cheeseburger. The lettuce adds more height tho lol. He said it was just whatever and literally finished it in like four bites. He was hoping it came with fries or something, I mean, they could've at least included a few tortilla chips? I have eaten at La Carnita's a few times previous to the pandemic and had a craving for the best tacos ever! Their shrimp tacos are like no others... definitely my favourite on the menu. The breaded shrimp is nice and crunchy, the sauce compliments the toppings perfectly and I love the portioning because the fillings don't spill out everywhere. As for the cod taco it was my first time trying it and I did not enjoy it at all, I asked the employee taking my order to remove a spicy sauce that they add and it wasn't removed when I got home and opened my box. It's one of those places that always have a line up, take no reservation. So you give up many times. We went in on a Sunday. The atmosphere is very dark, the seating have no salt and pepper because its bar like. Half price Sangria's on Sunday!! Yum. We ordered quite a lot. Quesadilla, the Ceviche, the spicy mushroom, the cod, the shrimp, the Mexican. Ordered a lot! Each taco is around 5 to 8$ with a single taco. They are towered with ingredients all assembled on order. Orders are received on a tablet so you know your order is at the kitchen the moment its punched in. The servers are attentive. It did not taste like authentic tacos I've had, but definitely tasty. I think a lot of them are a touch salty and I may ask to pull back the salt but I doubt they can because a lot are premixed and it's a quick prep and assemble. I would say the salt level would compliment if had with beer. The fried ones, like shrimp and cod were basically like fish and chip in a taco, but I did notice the fry was very dark; the oil had not been changed in a while! O_o The cod was not hot, so it was just batched later and the shrimp was hot. Was not a fan of the spicy mushroom. It tasted like a mix of soy sauce and mushroom sauce; or the juice of mushroom blended with mushroom sauce and corn starch. It just couldn't put my finger on the taste. It was too "Chinese-try-hard" for me in a Mexican mix. Just a light mushroom with texture would have been fine for me. It's a very lively location and the space that can handle a party if you just wanted to booze it up and pick at tacos. Expect your taco experience to cost you 20-40$ per person if you're ordering 3 to 6 in one evening. Didnt try the washroom, but there is hand sanitizer at the entrance of the mall. Yes, they were flavourful, but again, small. I asked if my friend wanted to try my tacos and she said she felt "bad" because they were soo minuscule! Heard a lot of hype about this place. Decided to try it out. The uniqueness of the place itself is nice. But food wise, meh. Not only are they expensive for what you get, portions are small, and the tacos themselves are very hard to hold and eat. Big pet peeve of mine when eating tacos. You'd think they'd use shells that actually hold together a reasonable amount. But nope. They fall apart right away. So you're left with pretty much a salad (ie mess of food) on your plate. The other thing I didn't like was how cold the food was. Sure, most of it was nice and fresh in terms of the ingredients. But I was literally holding cold tortillas in my hand. We called in on Saturday for a snack and refreshments while we checked out the new Food District at Square One. We sat at the bar and enjoyed the atmosphere, listening to some music being played on a really good sound system. The kitchen is open to the bar area and quite busy. We were served promptly and I enjoyed a glass of Merlot from Huff Estates. We tried some tacos which were very good. They were quite spicy and fresh. Came in on a Sunday afternoon and to my surprise it wasn't packed and full. We got seated right away and server came over relatively after. Server was nice but no menu explanation or suggestions given and no questions like "Is this your first time? Would you like some suggestions? Here are some of our popular items..." Only order was taken. Food came out slow considering how little people were there but the fish were made fresh. However the taco shell itself was cold and no limes we're provided for the tacos especially cause we did order the In Cod We Trust, fish tacos ... This was rather disappointing. Finally tried this place out after countless good reviews from others. This is a super busy place with limited seats. We had to wait an hour but were able to get seated at the bar before getting proper seats. Food: Their menu is a little different so be aware and read all the ingredients on the menu before ordering. I had the chips with 3 dips which was pretty decent. Fish tacos, crispy chicken taco and a chicken taco with pineapple salsa. The chicken taco with pineapple salsa was the only one I liked even though I took out most of the pineapple salsa out of it. I was super excited about the churro's but had to return those as they lacked texture and taste. I will most definitely not be coming back to this location but will definitely try out the downtown location. Ambience: Super chic bar like vibe. Our server was also Bartending was absolutely a sweetheart and the reason why I've given this place at least 3 stars. Cons: For those coming here on game night, there are no TV's. Always the best service and quality of food is out of this world. We've been to the Toronto location numerous times but the Mississauga location now holds a special place in our hearts. The go to: the Mexican street corn is our forever favourite! Pair it with their Mexican cola and you'll have the best meal. Obviously the tacos are amazing too -but sometimes the corn and cola are the perfect little snack!! read more
