Burritos: $9 each + $3 each for cheese add
    Cherilyn L.

Respect and appreciation to the owners and their team for their story and commitment to quality! Their team was incredibly helpful making recommendations and always on the move. This is a good place to try given the recognition, however it is not my preference, which is okay. Anything we ordered that came with beans, is BEAN HEAVY. If you like beans, then you will enjoy. The tacos are very filled. Guaranteed spillage out the other side of the tacos. For a $9 burrito + $3 cheese add (each), and mostly beans in the steak burritos it is hard justifying a small $12 burrito. 4 tacos & 2 burritos cost $54!! Again, for what they served, it did not feel worth it. I understand paying for quality, though my experience was not quite captivating enough to warrant going out of my way for. It is busy and I recommend going at off peak hours (I went around 2:30pm) I left a bit disappointed and maybe it was overhyped from the NYT article and other reviews. Overall the ingredients were fresh and the tacos had deep flavors, which were nice The salsa was not an exciting add to the tacos or burritos. No regrets to try and support small local businesses.

The line at 11:30a. It took about 30 minutes from the back of the line to having a taco in our mouth!

Mesa Agricola lives up to the NYT Top 100 list for sure! Every item has a depth of complexity that you just don't find that often in So Cal Mexican. The stand outs for us were Chicken en mole rojo, Chipotle Chicken, and pork em salsa verde. Also, the basque cheesecake was the BEST cheesecake any of us can remember having anywhere!

This place just earned a spot in the New York Times Top 50 Restaurants in the United States list! That's right - Mesa Agricola! Congratulations for providing such great food. Mesa Agricola serves mostly guisados. Guisados are traditional Mexican home-style stews or braised dishes, typically cooked slowly in a pot until tender. In Mexican cuisine, they are often served inside warm corn tortillas as tacos de guisado, offering a hearty, comforting meal featuring rich, slow-simmered meats (like tinga, birria, chicharrón en salsa, or carne con chile) or vegetables (like rajas con crema or nopales). Thanks you Gemini for that! I tried the three chicken tacos today and all three were outstanding. Big and full of flavor, as to be expected from a top eatery. The ambiance was good, although the shop was too small. I suspect that they will grow as the place has only be open for a year. Definitely try Mesa Agricola next time you have a hankering for tasty Mexican food! Five enthusiastic stars!

Worth the hype hands down. Mesa Agricola is a small hole in the wall on Escondido. There's very limited seating, but that didn't bother me. People come and and go often enough where you probably will be able to snag a chair. The service was amazing, everyone is really friendly and patient despite the lunch rush! Overall the food is worth the hype! High quality, handmade tortillas are soft and fluffy. I think they're also known for their farm to table ingredients. Their agua fresca was made from melons from their farm and it was incredible! Will have to return for their cheesecake and cookies..and more tacos!

I first heard about Mesa Agricola through social media after seeing that it was featured on the New York Times' list of the 50 best restaurants. This little hole-in-the-wall spot in Escondido specializes in tacos and burritos made with slow-cooked guisados, served on homemade flour or corn tortillas. When we arrived, there was already a long line of people waiting outside to order. The restaurant is very small, with limited indoor and outdoor seating, so many people were taking their food to go. Since it was a beautiful day, we were lucky to find an outdoor table. We wanted to try a little of everything and ordered chicken tinga, chicken chipotle, bean & cheese, and mushroom & ajillo tacos on their delicious homemade corn tortillas. We also tried a cheese quesadilla with homemade corn tortilla and Chihuahua cheese--and it was so good! My favorites were the chicken chipotle taco and the quesadilla -- so much flavor in every bite! Most of the tacos come with rice and beans inside along with the other flavorful ingredients. Everything was delicious, although I personally would have preferred some tacos without rice. I also wanted to try the turkey mole taco, but it had already sold out. The jamaica agua fresca was also a refreshing addition to the meal. One thing that surprised me was that, despite eating more than I normally would, I didn't leave feeling overly stuffed or uncomfortable. It could be due to the freshness and high quality of the food. I'd recommend going earlier in the day, as they can sell out of popular items. By the time we arrived in the late afternoon, the flour tortillas were already gone. The customer service was excellent. Despite the crowds and constant flow of customers, the staff worked hard to keep up while remaining friendly, welcoming, and appreciative. I also love the story behind this husband-and-wife team--she's a farmer and he's a culinary chef. It's wonderful to see a small local business built around farm-to-table ingredients and traditional cooking succeeding. If you're new to guisados or already a fan, Mesa Agricola is definitely a local spot worth trying!

Best Mexican food I have had! AUTHENTIC!!! Saw this restaurant on New York Times and was so excited to be right by it the other day. The owner was working cash and was insanely kind, passionate, and helpful. You can see by the line their business has blown up and for good reason! The tacos had so much flavor and were perfect. I loveeeed the hibiscus drink too! Perfect pick me up lunch or cozy dinner. Super easy ordering too!

Been seeing people rave about this place since it was named under NY Times 50 favorites. They opened at 11 and we arrived around 11:30. There was already a line formed outside. Very limited parking in back so you'll most likely have to find street parking and walk in. Tiny location with only a few tables inside and out. It took us about 30 mins to get inside to order and another 15-20 mins before it came out. You basically place your order then wait outside. Your food will be brought out to you once it's ready. The agua fresca is good. Refreshing & not too sweet. The taco meats are flavorful and the tortilla is fresh but IMO street tacos are way better. TBH it just tastes like different types of meat braised or stewed inside a crockpot with different types of veggies and spices. These tacos have way too much rice and beans in it. By the time we got home to eat it, they were breaking apart. We asked for their spicy hot sauce and it wasn't all that spicy at all. Glad I got to try it but I will not be back only because it's not my preferred style of tacos.

Rated as a 1 but I meant minus -1. Not only cold when we finally got it (20 minutes to slop beans, rice, cheese and maybe some meat on a cold and tiny tortilla??). So you've got a big tub with this "stuff" in it and you just spoon it over. Flavor? Taste? Quality? None of these happened. After a couple bites I threw it away. Also too salty Why, Why, Why does this place exist! Also: bad location, no parking, no seating, no anything!

We happened to drive by last week. "What the heck is going on there?" Looked it up. Great reviews. Terrific marketing and social media. And what??? The NYTimes says it's a top 50 restaurant or something like that. Nevertheless, a small Escondido restaurant gets written up in one of the world's most respected newspapers, we gotta try. And we know we'll have to wait. That's okay. Select your guisado. Decide if you want it as a burrito or a taco. Okay. Made my guisado decision and I'm going to get a burrito. We were there at 5:00ish. They close at 6:00 pm and they're out of burritos for the day. Okay. Never thought I'd hear that. Wait thirty-ish minutes for our four tacos. Look great! Excited to try. They look nice and sloppy, so I'm happy we were able to get a table. As I'm eating the tacos, what struck me was why did this take so long? Seems as though the guisado wa made. Sitting in a pot and it's slathered on. The corn tortillas were delicious, but I gotta say the guisado wasn't very flavorful. A bit boring. What struck me most that after waiting as long as we did, I'd expect the food to be piping hot. Lukewarm at best. Disappointed overall, but excited for Escondido and to try again.

Excellent tacos and would highly recommend this place to anyone. We haven't had a taco yet that we don't like. It can be a bit busy but the wait is worth it.

Tacos were absolutely fantastic. I drive by this place all the time as I'm a local in Esco but the line can get long. Finally caught the line SHORT so I pulled over and have this place a shot. I'm someone who HATES waiting in lines I will just leave and even with a very to door line I waited almost 30 mins plus total time if they can ever get people in and out quickly I would go all the time but anyways the tacos were really some of the best I ever had. Just clean light and fresh you can taste. I order the 2 different types of chicken they had available and with these salad I should have got more of they were great.

Chorizo con Nopales ($4.50) - All their tacos were so unique and utilized fresh ingredients, but this one stood out! The chorizo was so flavorful the nopales went so well with it. Steak Jalisco ($4.50) - You can't go wrong with steak and I appreciated how this came with veggies, beans, and rice! This would've made a good burrito. Chicken Mole Verde ($4.50) - I don't usually get chicken tacos but I highly recommend this one! It was bursting with flavor and I love pepitas.

The first time I visited a few weeks ago, I had a really positive experience. The location was a little hard for me to find, but once I got there, it seemed worth it. I walked in craving a breakfast burrito and was helped by a very nice, slender gentleman at the counter. I asked for a ham, bacon, and sausage breakfast burrito and also requested that it be cut in half. He was friendly, said no problem, and within minutes I had exactly what I ordered. That burrito was delicious. The salsa station was stocked and convenient with self-serve cups readily available, and the atmosphere was nice. The people around me were friendly, and one gentleman even mentioned this was the place that used to be near Peterson's Donuts. Overall, it was a great first impression and I left happy, already planning to come back. Fast forward to today, Saturday, April 25, 2026 around 10:30 AM, and unfortunately, my second experience was the complete opposite. This time there was a young woman working the register, and from the moment I approached, she didn't seem very welcoming. I told her I wanted to order a breakfast burrito but wasn't sure what kind I wanted today. She told me the only options were bacon, egg, cheese and tater tots, or egg and cheese. I politely asked if I could add ham and sausage and pay extra, since that's what I had ordered before. She immediately responded that they "didn't have that type of breakfast burrito." That response confused me because I had literally ordered one there before. I wasn't going to argue, especially because her tone and attitude made me feel like I was bothering her just by asking questions. I then asked if the burrito could be cut in half and never really got a clear response. I also noticed the salsa station no longer had the little self-serve cups available, so I had to ask for those too. The same cashier asked how many I needed, and I said two. A few minutes later, another woman called my name and handed me the burrito. I sat down and realized it wasn't cut in half like I requested. At that point, I had to go back up and ask for a plastic knife and fork just to cut it myself. Which was not a problem or issue for me. I ate half of the burrito, but honestly, it wasn't nearly as good as the first one. The taste was underwhelming, and by the time I left I was just so disappointed. I ended up throwing the other half away after I left. Consistency matters, especially when the first experience set the bar high. The food was great the first time, but the service and quality were lacking the second time around. My honest opinion: if someone is having a bad day, they probably shouldn't be the first face customers interact with at the register. I may update this review depending on how management responds, because I know this place can do better based on my first visit.

I ordered a #1 combo (shredded beef taco, cheese, enchilada, beans/rice) for myself, and two shredded beef tacos à la carte for Mom, to eat at home a half mile away. Upon opening, the combo looked good, although the tiny smattering of pico on the taco and particularly the super skimpy portions of both beans and rice immediately stood out - a real bummer as I REALLY love Mexican beans and rice. So presentation was quite disappointing. Then, the second I picked up the taco, it was apparent it didn't survive the trip, having completely disintegrated on the bottom. This appeared to be from using a thinner than usual tortilla to make the taco, which was then set directly in a puddle of unusually watery enchilada sauce. So that was strike 2. As for the cheese enchilada, there was so little cheese had I not known what I was eating I wouldn't have been able to tell you. In addition, it was swimming in the same watery enchilada sauce that caused the demise of the taco. As for the à la carte beef tacos, mom reported they were good. So at least she was happy (Whew! Thank goodness!). The good news is, the food all tasted good, with the issues all relating to quantity and plating, not quality or taste. So despite the low rating, I'll be back at least once more to give them another go, if only because it's so conveniently close to home. Fingers crossed...

We came with an appetite and tried a little bit of everything across the menu: Garlic Shrimp Tacos (2) & Grilled Fish Tacos (2): Generous portion size with a fantastic meat-to-veggie ratio. Balanced, fresh, and super satisfying. Chips & Salsa: Crunchy chips paired with a flavorful salsa. I personally loved the kick of spice, though more than half our table found it a bit too hot for their palate! Red Snapper: Ordered deep-fried with garlic butter sauce on the side. We ordered and paid for our food, then went to the restroom to wash our hands. To get there, you have to walk through the kitchen all the way to the back, and that's when everything changed for us. Back there, we saw large bins of food, what looked like beans sitting out, open containers of chips, and food exposed with doors open. It didn't look clean or properly handled at all. The bathroom itself also wasn't in great condition. On top of that, there were shared sauces on the tables in open containers with spoons sitting inside, which didn't feel sanitary. After seeing all of that, when we got our food, we honestly didn't even want to eat it. We ordered birria tacos, carne asada, and carnitas. My husband didn't finish his food, and I didn't let my daughter eat any of it. Unfortunately, after eating there, I ended up getting very sick and was dealing with what felt like food poisoning for about a week, which affected the rest of our trip. The only thing that tasted okay was the lime water. I don't understand how this place has such high ratings. Based on what we saw and experienced, I would not recommend it, and I think it should be looked into for basic health and safety standards. We would not return.
