However in the case of Willow, an unexpected…read moreboutique in Petworth on a street more known for restaurants and bars (Petworth citizen and Domku) this word is absolutely fitting. This store has been open for more than a year and I can't believe me and my credit card haven't found this place earlier. This store is the cutest boutique I have been to in DC! Whether you're looking for a gift for a young women in your life, or looking to expand your wardrobe, a trip to Petworth will definitely pay off!! If you like brands like YA and Tulle, this is the place to go. There are no shortages of cute dresses and tops, with affordable prices (it's also the least expensive boutique I have been to). They also have one rack of vintage clothing, that's all in good shape and look repurposed. I tend to not wear vintage clothes, not cause I am a snob, only because people from the past were really really thin and my modern day thighs won't fit a thing here, but if you're lucky and thin, don't pass this rack by. I nearly dragged in half a rack of clothing into the dressing room with me, and thanks to Lia who reminded me of exactly how many striped dresses I own I walked away with only a cute peplum top for $26( https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=529507513830592&set=a.150739758374038.31207.127311010716913&type=1&theater) which looks like nothing I own and perfect for going out. Lia however did not remind me of my polka dot addiction, and I also walked away with a set of four tiny vintage cute ceramic bowls in red and white polka dot pattern. I know this is a clothing boutique mainly, but definitely if you find yourself in here do not overlook the vintage homewares. Cute plate sets (4 for $19), ring holders and ceramic casserole dishes are everywhere. It's like cute Anthropologie stuff without the inflated nonsense prices. The owner who was completely delightful invited us back for a 30% off event party, which is timed perfectly with my next payday. Coincidence? I think not.

It's also one of my go-to places for cute and unique cards and gifts (jewelry and a few household goods like DC themed glassware!). Have a friend expecting a baby? Pick up a DC flag onesie. This is a wonderful part of the Upshur retail area and definitely worth a trip if you don't live in Petworth. (The owner, Julie, also owns the delectable Lulabelle's Sweet Shop on the block!)

My mother recommended G Street Fabrics to me after our local JoAnn closed, and she spoke highly of…read morethe store from her years of shopping here. I wanted to continue supporting it for that reason and for its sense of community, but my experiences have been consistently disappointing. Yesterday was my final straw. I am new to sewing and come in seeking guidance on fabric selection and product education, yet nearly every visit is met with dismissive or rude customer service. The older representatives in particular often do not greet me and respond reluctantly or faintly when I ask for assistance. Help is provided, but it often feels like an inconvenience unless they are in the mood. Yesterday, when I asked a representative at the fabric counter for help understanding a product, she was short-tempered and instead told me they were closing at 5:15 p.m., despite the website listing a 7:30 p.m. closing time. The interaction felt rushed, dismissive, and disrespectful. At checkout, I asked for a bag for several small tools and fabric. The cashier said they were running low, and etc and tossed the bag at me. This type of behavior has happened on multiple visits and consistently dampens the experience. I truly wanted to like this store, but the repeated lack of basic courtesy--especially toward newer customers--has made me unwilling to return. I hope management takes these ongoing customer service issues seriously.

They've been in business for over 80 years, and their deep sewing knowledge really sets them apart from other stores. Most employees have been here for years--some for decades--which truly shows their dedication and love for what they do. Even the store owners are very dedicated; you'll often see them on the floor greeting customers, which shows how much they care. Courtney is super helpful and really knows pattern making, Linda has been part of G Street for decades, and Leo is incredibly knowledgeable and always willing to help. You'll soon know everyone by name because they naturally become your sewing-expertise coaches. I even call them the fabric whisperers because they always seem to know exactly what you need. I bought my sewing machine here with Esther's help--she is so kind and genuinely wants you to succeed long after your purchase. They also offer upholstery services and sewing-machine repairs--both of which have saved me more than once. And I have to give a special shout-out to Lew, the sewing tech. He's the absolute best and always knows exactly how to fix any issue. I can't recommend G Street enough. It's a must-visit for anyone who sews, creates, or simply loves beautiful materials.

I teach dollmaking and other crafts, and have even purchased ready-made African outfits from here for cultural celebrations. The owner and his family have always been friendly, courteous, and helpful. They are one of the few surviving stores that carries the latest African fabrics in the Prince Georges County area. Please give them your business, and regard some of the other negative reviews perhaps as coming from people whose expectations were not met with their idea of an African fabric store. This is not a fancy store, or one like the big chain fabric stores. Admittedly it is arranged in a way that is very different from traditional fabric stores. If you've ever shopped in the garment district in New York in one of its places where fabrics are piled to the ceiling, you'll almost feel like you are in one of those types of stores. This store is loaded with tons of fabrics and sewing notions, as well as jewelry and ready-made outfits. The fabric for the most part is on large heavy rolls, thus it is not easy to move them around a lot as one previous reviewer complained that the owner would not do. The store has its own charm, personality, and atmosphere. Give it a try. If you really want quality fabric, buy here, and put your high expectations to the side, and walk away with the fabric you came to buy.

Everyone wears a name tag (as someone who is not good with names, I LOVE this!). At the beginning of class everyone does an introduction. Everyone was so friendly and it was a very nice community. The instructor (Valerie, I believe) was very detailed in her instructions that included threading a machine, debugging, ironing, sewing different stitches and lengths, assembling and dissembling the machine, and making a mini pillow. After she demoed different steps, she would have us try and wandered the room quickly correcting us if something wasn't quite right. We also had to repeat each action twice to develop the muscle memory. There are classes available for all things a beginning sewer needs to know up to how to make your own bodice at advance levels. The store has patterns, fabric, and take-home kits. If you cannot make a scheduled workshop, you can do the lesson over private instruction. I had followed YouTube instructions before and done lots of searches trying to figure out how to sew with limited success. This class multiplied my knowledge by 1000 and helped me identify what I was doing wrong on my own so I could course correct. If you're interested in learning to sew, this is your place!

Upon entering we found ourselves surrounded by a huge selection of the most beautiful variety African imported fabric we could ever have possibly wished for: lace, george, aso oke,, wax prints, silk, velvet, brocades, chiffon, batik..., you name it and you will find it here. There is also beautifully-designed men's and women's clothing for sale, from everyday wear to fashions for a glamorous evening out, or an elegant wedding. We will encourage family and friends to shop here with our people, where the customer service was excellent; friendly, kind, helpful, respectful and welcoming, even though we discovered it was actually closing time, We are so pleased in every way to have found a new business to support.
