Our front door lock had been hard to turn for awhile, and today my key actually broke and became stuck in the lock due to my clumsy attempt to force open the door. Thank goodness someone was home to let me in and I immediately consulted Yelp for a local locksmith. Call me old fashioned but I like to use a brick and mortar store when it comes to locks and security. (Had a bad experience in the city from a "mobile locksmith" years ago but that's a story for another day). I spoke to Jose at Merrick Master Locksmiths, we agreed on a price range and he was at my house in less than 30 minutes. Jose extracted the broken key and fixed the lock in about 10 minutes including a nice hit of WD-40 to lube it up, something I'll do in future periodically to keep things working well. Price was reasonable for a house call and he even threw in 2 free spare keys made at the store later that day. Lock is working perfectly now. I own an arcade style pinball machine that I keep in my basement. It's huge and heavy as one can imagine. Anyways every pinball machine has a front door that opens by lock and key. My lock was jammed and key wouldn't turn. Called these guys the so called master locksmiths and asked if they could help. The idiot answering phone asked if I could bring the pinball machine to him. I told him it was massive and weighed a ton. He asked me how did I get it into my house then. I told him his question and comment was the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard and thanked him for his time. He proceeded to scream FUCK YOU in the phone and hung up on me. They came to help me get in to my car on a Sunday! The guy was so nice and he spent time trying to unlock my Honda drivers door. When I realized that my keys were not inside he car I was so upset because I didn't know A) where my key to the car was and B). How was I getting to work!!! Well the guy said call me tomorrow and he would help me out!!! Super nice and willing to go the extra mile. Moral of this story is... Seemed a little on the pricey side -- $160 to change the keys/locks for both my front and back door home entrances -- but I didn't do much research because they were local and could come the same day. I say seemed pricey because I did very little research ahead of time. They could very well be fair in terms of price. read more
