Merriam Pianos has been at the heart of the piano industry not just in Toronto, but across the world, for 25 years. Merriam has built strong ties to many of Canada's largest and most prestigious universities like McMaster University, University of Western Ontario, Queens University, Humber College, and the University of Ottawa. We also have close and highly respected relationships with our carefully chosen suppliers, like Mason & Hamlin, Kawai, Roland, Perzina, and Korg. And perhaps most importantly, we're all pianists! Alan Merriam, founder and president, himself an accomplished pianist with an extensive professional playing background, has carefully surrounded himself with like-minded team members, so when you walk into Merriam Music for your new digital, upright, or baby grand piano, you know you'll be talking with a highly experienced piano professional.
Meet the Business Owner: Alan M.
Alan Merriam began his career as a performing jazz musician in Ottawa at the age of 15. He studied jazz piano at the Humber College School of Music and traditional piano with Darwin Aitken, one of Canada's most celebrated piano coaches. He played on several TV and radio programs and also performed across Canada with his trio. In his late 20's, he left his performance career to manage the Toronto Steinway dealership and then in 1988 founded Merriam Music Inc. By combining sound investment practices and prudent financial conservatism, and his passion for music and the arts, Merriam Music has grown to become one of the most successful, progressive and innovative schools of music and piano retailers in the world.
Merriam School developed and publishes its own Keyfest Music Method, and the Keyfest Syllabus and Examination System (beginner to artist levels).
Merriam's Enriched Studies and Band Chops programs have received critical acclaim from some of the most recognized Universities.
