    Scallop Dinner

I love pesto and sour cream so felt like the mermaid fries were literally made for me lol! We ate them all and the waiter was friendly. I also got the scallops dinner which was delicious too. The vibe is awesome it's not too loud but not too quiet where you feel like people can hear you talking. They also have an outdoor heated section that we wanna try sometime!

We went here for my birthday dinner. They gave me a complementary birthday drink with a candle in it which I loved! We started with the spinach and artichoke dip which was delicious - good balance of flavor and creaminess. I had the chicken pasta - literally the largest plate of pasta ever. The sauce was quite good and had some fresh notes. The chicken was a little dry. My husband had the duck. It was a cohesive dish and each element was well done. For desert we had the chocolate cake. The texture was more like a brownie and it was held together with a cream cheese icing. Fun presentation. Our server was kind and accommodating. We brought our three month old son and felt comfortable with him there. Thanks mermaid winery!

Most review ratings are relative. If you've been to an array of really great restaurants then the rating would be based on minute details, differentiating only by a hair. But when my beau and I have had 2 weeks eating at various restaurants here in VA Beach and OBX and Wilmington NC and most are mediocre, Mermaid Winery unequivocally bubbles to the top! The ambiance is a 5. Feels casual upscale and spacious inside. We got seated in the back room which is a covered patio. Well appointed and cozy. Service is good. Waitress was friendly. Food is a 5. Calamari was good. I loved the ahi tuna served with seaweed salad; my beau liked his bison burger.

A nice spot for a group outing! We were visiting VA beach and after a day at a beach this was a great place to wind down and have dinner. We were lucky enough to get a same-day private room reservation for our large party of 10. Also, I'm a HUGE sucker for charcuterie boards (so if you are too, then this is your place!) I also ordered the Soup of the Day and the Chicken Pasta, which, I have to say, the portions are gigantic, so you will not leave hungry. Baked Brie and Charcuterie Board: My friend ordered this and I got to try some. If I had to order one, I'd probably pick the Baked Brie, but mainly because I just love gooey melted brie. Also, whatever those pita chip things they serve with these boards is SO GOOD. The only thing I didn't quite get was the side salad served with the charcuterie, I thought that was odd and not a normal thing you'd see with a charcuterie board. Soup of the Day: Didn't catch the name, but the day we went it was some sort of Thai creamy potato soup with chorizo sausage, crab, and shrimp. It was LOADED. This soup was so good - salty, creamy, and there was so much stuff in it (it's not one of those empty soups). And again it was a LARGE soup. I definitely filled up on the soup alone and it was pretty heavy, so keep in mind it might make it a little hard to finish your entree! Chicken Pasta: Definitely looked creamier in photos than what I got, I was expecting a little more sauce. The pasta was good, but the grilled chicken was very very salty and slightly on the dry side. Being $20 and for the portion I got, it was still a solid deal. Liked the vibes, check it out if you're looking for a low key dinner spot with a group of friends!

If your looking for a date night place or even just to unwind this is your place. A good space for a parking is always a plus.. the selection of wine is also very good. We went on late Saturday, the service is fast and very accommodating. Our server DAN is very kind. The lamb shanks is really tasty. The Duck is highly recommended, its a must try on their entrèe. The charcuterie board also is delicious the pecan and the salmon is mouthwatering.

As California wine snobs we absolutely loved this place. The service was amazing and the wines were great. We got the classic flight which was all the Mermaid wine. Some grapes from Lodi CA some from Charlottesville VA. Spinach artichoke dip was great. The wine tasting rack was unique and very cool. Would highly recommend

Came here on a Friday afternoon for lunch and wine. The winery has a full menu and food was tasty. They have free wine tastings on Friday's starting at 4pm, otherwise wine tasting was $20, reasonable for the amount received. They make their own wine and offer other wines and liquor. I forgot my wallet, thank goodness they had Apple Pay. Staff were incredibly friendly. Look forward to returning.

Oh my God, I can't say enough about how amazing this place is! I strolled in on a Thursday evening--no wait, no stress--and was immediately blown away by the atmosphere. The ambience is warm, inviting, and just perfect for a relaxed night out. My waitress (Betty) was absolutely wonderful--attentive, friendly, and made the whole experience even better. And the food? WOW. Every bite was delicious! On Thursdays, they have this Dinner for Two special for only $50 (yes, total--not per person!), and the quality and presentation are top-notch. You can see from the pictures how beautifully everything is done. I've officially found a new favorite spot, and I'll definitely be back again soon. Mermaid Winery, you've got a lifelong fan!

Great wine and an interesting collection of wines to choose from. I want to love Mermaid on Shore Drive, but after multiple tries I keep running into the same issue. The place tends to have an unappealing odor. This is probably not a huge deal for most, but three out of three visits have been marred by an appetite-killing general smell. Otherwise great location and very friendly service.

Came during brunch for the first time and it was pretty good. Our server was Jonathen and he was amazing! Started off with the sweet flight and i highly recommend if you're a sweets wine person. Tried the artichoke and spinach dip, grazing charcuterie board, and a Caesar salad. Was nice and satisfied with the meal and ended it with the crème brulee.

My husband and I had a really nice time here this past Saturday. The food was delicious (Southern Belle Burger and Blackened Tuna Tacos). The fresh, hot fries were also yummy. We both enjoyed those, as well. Wine sampling was fun - my husband realized if he's going to drink wine he'd prefer white. I think I agree :0) Our waitress was awesome - very friendly and attentive with a great sense of humor. The atmosphere is great - relaxing, casual and comfortable. Check them out!

We stopped in in hopes of tasting some wine. The winery wasn't crowded but they seemed to struggle to seat our party of 8. We ended up sitting outside on the covered patio. It was a really nice setting. We were disappointed to hear that we couldn't do a flight because it took too many glasses and they didn't do tasting for groups over 4. Our server wasn't knowledgeable about wines and gave us incorrect information which was disappointing. Another server recommended a wine saying she didn't know much about them but it was a really pretty bottle. Not really the recommendation you expect at a winery. Disappointing!

Went in on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Not too busy but they put us on the covered porch in the back which was lovely and private for our party of 10. Service was very slow. Staff wasn't very knowledgeable on the wines and it took a long time for us to get 2 bottles of wine. 2 servers kept coming back and forth but did not deliver. Note: we could not do flights. Only parties of 4 can do flights. Was told it's because they don't have enough glassware? What if the restaurant was full?? Odd. Need to change that rule! We ordered some cheese plate which wasn't very good, tasted fishy, and hummus which was very small for the price. Lovely atmosphere but could improve.

We were the only patrons for much of our visit. My birthday daughter and I ordered wine sample flights and chatted up the owner. Wife shopped the gift area and picked out a nice bauble. The good: the owner was very engaging and told us about the wines (and wine slushies) they offer. We asked where the grapes came from and she explained that some came from Chile, some from California (I believe) and other places, and that she blends them here. (This would be expected with no attached vineyard.) The place was very clean, and the restrooms were easily accessible and spacious. The price of the flights was a mere $5 for six communion cup sized samples -- you choose 6 of I guess 12 - 15. Mulled wine is a welcome option on a winter day. The disappointing: While there is a good assortment of wines, and many were on the good side of okay, none stood out and said BUY A BOTTLE OF ME. The fruity sweet wines were VERY sweet, not really good for dessert wine or sipping. (Sorry.) But again, the reds especially were drinkable and pleasant. Verdict: a good stop if you need a break and a glass or two to go with your conversation. Just don't set expectations too high and you'll be fine.

I saw the event advertised on social media and knew I had to check it out. It's gourmet specialty hot dogs paired with a wide selection of martinis, from classics like lemon drops and cosmos to more unique options like the pickletinis and caprese tinis. I went with a couple of friends around 5:45 and it was packed, but luckily people were leaving as we arrived so we were able to grab a spot. It was a little too chilly to sit outside, but they do have additional seating and I'd definitely sit out there when it's warmer. The food was great. I got the kimchi hot dog and loved it. The brioche bun really stood out, and the chili truffle oil fries were amazing. Everything comes out on a cute little tray, which was a nice touch. For my drink, I tried the pickletini. It was good, but definitely strong, especially if you're new to martinis. One friend got the caprese-tini, which was surprisingly good and came with a caprese skewer, so you get a little snack with it. My other friend got a dirty martini, which she enjoyed, and even as someone who isn't big on olives, I thought it was pretty good. After our tasting, we decided to sit down and order one of our longtime favorites: the short rib with mashed potatoes and vegetables. We hadn't had it in a few months because the last time was an epic fail, but we figured we'd give it another shot. As always, the pretzel bread and butter were a highlight -- that part never misses. The entrée, however, was another disappointment. The vegetables were noticeably undercooked -- still hard and crunchy -- and the dish came out with barely any sauce, even though I specifically asked for extra. For a short rib dish, you expect that rich, flavorful gravy to tie everything together... and it just wasn't there. A manager did come over after I pointed it out, and she genuinely tried to make it right, which I appreciated. We were offered another meal to take home, but at that point we were honestly just over it. To end on a positive note, I tried the Banoffee Pie for the first time (recommended by the manager), and it was actually really good -- rich, sweet, and worth trying. I also ordered their chocolate cake to go (which I usually love), but when I got home, it wasn't in the bag. I had to call for a refund, which they did handle -- but it just added to the overall frustration. At this point, it's become a pattern. When I first started coming here over a year ago, everything was consistently great. Lately, though, the dinner experience has been more miss than hit. We'll absolutely continue coming back for the wine tastings -- those are still top-tier. But for dinner? We're done trying.

The tour comes with complimentary breakfast and lunch. We got picked up at the little station behind Freedom Car Wash and Wawa. The bus was brand new and very comfortable. The muffins and sweet potato pastries made by a contestant on Master Chef Junior and the muffins were great. I didn't have the pastries because I don't like sweet potatoes. We were offered a bag with water and a granola bar with brochures for wineries and some for the ones we were going to. The was also a scent bag with soy candle samples from Pink Zebra. They smelled great. Next on the list was gathering the rest of the group for the trip from Norfolk. Once we got everyone, we were offered mimosas; candor l cranberry or orange. We chose orange. Deanna introduced herself, daughter, and granddaughter. She also introduced those who she knew who were on the trip. She provided some great historic facts like the origin of witchduck. She discussed the history of Virginia wine and information about Virginia Born presidents. Our first stop was New Kent Winery and our host was great and very polite. The tasting was very informative and fun. Their wines were fantastic and the Vineyard was amazing. It wasn't on the itinerary, but Deanna put it on there. Next was Michie Tavern. We had lunch there and the buffet was great. The wine tasting, not so much. Third stop was Baubersville and the wine was ok. We weren't really a fan of the environment because I felt out of place even though I was dressed pretty nicely. Last stop was Horton and our host was amazing! We had so much fun! It is also my birthday month and have had my eye on this tour for awhile. It was fate! Not knowing what to expect, I jumped the gun and paid immediately. When Rex, the owner, sent the itinerary, I saw 3 local restaurants, Catch 31, Rockefeller's, & Tautogs. My first thoughts were, "I hope this isn't lame...", "I could go to these places myself..." The group met at Virginia Aquarium for an optional tour inside for the first 30mins. I arrived late. Now, I wish I made it on time to hear more about oysters. Rex tried finding the group for me & we walked all around the museum. It was way too crowded, I was late, & didn't mind waiting. Perhaps walkie talkies as a communication tool for the husband & wife team. Not just for late arrivals. :) Could be distracting too but, just a suggestion. The aquarium attendants had no idea who or where the group was. I did appreciate the effort. Not many would help me catch up with group especially, since I was late. Our first stop was Catch 31. Table was set and ready to go. We had three chefs(one including one of our guides, Chef Patrick Evans-Hylton) and the sommelier at our table. They educated us about the oysters & wine. They walked us through the various types of oysters & wine, regions, how to eat, & how to taste. We were served 4 oysters each from one of the 7 regions & two wine tastings. There were condiments and crackers on the table. I thought this was definitely the most informative restaurant out of the three. Next stop was Rockefeller's. Again, tables were set & wine was poured! No menu w/ descriptions. We had 2 raw oysters and 2 oysters rockefeller. Then, we were served hush puppies w/ pimento cheese which were amazing. Last, was coconut cake! This restaurant had more food offerings which was good because after several glasses of wine, I was hungry & others were too!! Last stop was Tautog's. They sat us outside & setup was more buffet style. Glasses of wine were on a table for us to pick up as we walked in. The presentation was beautifully prepared. They had 3 of their house sauces which were delicious! I thought the sauces were needed with these oysters. Others agreed. Didn't taste as fresh as the previous restaurants. I believe they were Lynnhaven and I've had Lynnhaven oysters before. So, not a reflection on the tour. There was also fresh cut fruit on the oyster platters. Only because TT asked, my recommendations would be: * Posting sample itineraries on social media * Clearer description of what to expect with regards to food so people know whether or not they should eat prior to the tour or pack a snack/sandwich. * Website shows they would be "happy to provide water and light snacks." None were offered. * Market/advertise the 10% off Yelp Check-in offer * Advise up front the 10% off Yelp Check-in is NOT valid for the Oyster & Wine tour. A portion of proceeds go towards non-profit which I totally understand & appreciate, just set the expectation. Overall, this was a lovely experience that one can comfortably do solo! I did and I truly enjoyed! Hands down. I am so happy to see a company like this on the East Coast and executing with such class. Please don't think this is a drunken wild party bus. It is a tasteful informative experience with subject matter experts who also enjoy partaking in libations while sharing their knowledge! :) I hope to see more food tours added to their current list. Rex, Lisa, & Chef Patrick were cordial, knowledgable, fun, and professional. Thank you so much for a memorable experience!

The music playlist was from my mid 1980's HS years...loved that Our server was pleasant and knowledgeable of the menu, checked on items that she wasn't sure of, regarding our spice/allergy levels. The Brussel sprouts appetizer was phenomenal! We opted to have the feta on the side, due to one of our preferences, they were totally accommodating. I had a tasting of the white wines, wonderful broad spectrum of palate pleasing flavors and textures. There is a large private room for reserving. The gift shop has an array of gifts from, of course, their wines, but also candles, wine accessories, and canned/bottled sangrias and much more. Great monthly events are scheduled at the Waters Edge, too!!

AMBIANCE: It was pretty dead on a Friday in October, I think there was 5 tables. I guess it was nice that I could hear my friends talk. SERVICE: Server was okay, not especially friendly but did her job well. FOOD/DRINKS: I had the california cab. We wanted to have the slushy but I think that was only a Summer thing. I ordered the crab cakes and although they were yummy, they were a bit overpriced for the quantity and size. Will I return? I think only for drinks and appetizers but not for dinner.

My friend invited me out to Crystal Palate for a wine tasting on a Wednesday and I couldn't wait to…read morestop in. As a wine lover, I love trying new places where I can indulge in a variety of different wines. I was pleasantly greeted as soon as I walked in and I couldn't help but notice how beautiful this place was. They not only offer an assortment of wine, but also a variety of crackers, cheeses, olives, honey and other treats as well. We were offered a sample of the Sage Derby Cheese and it was so good, I bought two lol. Once everyone arrived, we went into the Wine Tasting Room to learn about the wines of the Pacific Northwest and to sample wines from that region. The class was very educational and I learned quite a few things. For example, Cabernet Franc is the parent of Cabernet Sauvignon, which is my favorite wine. Once the tasting wrapped up, we were able to socialize with the group and the staff. We inquired about the membership and they even shared that they offer opportunities to wine school as well. Overall, I had the best time at Crystal Palate! The staff were extremely personable and the wines were great! Wine Wednesday EDUtastings are a great way to learn about different wines from specific regions so definitely stop in if you are a wine lover like myself! You will not be disappointed!!!

Okay... I officially have a new favorite spot, and it's Crystal Palate…read more At this point, my Wednesdays might as well be reserved because their wine tastings are THAT good. Each week they feature a different region and really take you on a full deep dive -- this week was the Pacific Northwest, and between the four wine samples and the education behind each one, I left feeling like I actually learned something (while still having a great time, of course). I brought a friend with me this time -- the same one who originally introduced me to Cooper's Hawk -- so it felt a little full circle being able to put her onto a place for once. And let me just say... she was impressed. Like, immediately texting people about it impressed. Now let's talk about that in-house herb cheddar. I don't even remember exactly what herbs were in it, but I DO know it was so good I had to buy some to take home... and my friend liked it so much she bought two. That should tell you everything you need to know. What really sets Crystal Palate apart though is that it's not just a tasting -- it's an experience. They offer classes, events, and even certification programs if you want to really get into wine and learn how to educate others. You can tell they genuinely love what they do, and it shows in every part of the experience. Honestly, I loved it so much I even asked if they were hiring -- that's how you know it's real. Great wine, great atmosphere, great energy... this place is a whole vibe. So if you're wondering where I'll be on Wednesday nights... you can find me and Lexi right here at Crystal Palate
