I stopped by Mermaid Winery on a beautiful sunny afternoon and decided to try their Sweet Wine Flight. In the summer I tend to gravitate toward lighter, sweeter wines, so the flight felt like the perfect choice for the day. Not surprisingly, my taste buds traveled straight to Italy. The Italian wines on the flight ended up being my favorites, with the standout being La Doria Moscato D'Asti. It was light, slightly bubbly, and perfectly balanced -- sweet but still refreshing. If you enjoy Moscato-style wines, this one was definitely the highlight of the tasting for me. The winery itself has a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere that makes it easy to settle in and enjoy a glass (or a flight). They also offer a selection of light bites if you want something to snack on while you're tasting. I ordered the house biscuits with jam and butter, which are made in-house, along with an order of fries. Both worked well as simple bites alongside the wine. If I had been with a group, I probably would have ordered the charcuterie board -- the one at the table next to me looked very generous and easily shareable. Service was friendly and welcoming, and since it wasn't overly crowded when I visited, it made for a relaxed afternoon tasting experience. Patrons beware: Restaurant may impose a restricted special-event menu without prior notice, even for reservations made weeks in advance. I booked a Valentine's Day reservation four weeks ago. Three days before the date, I received a text notifying me of a special Valentine's Day menu. I reviewed it and found it consists mostly of seafood or red meat items, with very few options other options. I immediately called to confirm whether this special menu is the only one available that evening. The restaurant confirmed that it is. This information was not disclosed at the time of booking or in the weeks following. Had I been informed upfront that only this limited menu would be offered, I would not have made the reservation. Took family to the Mermaid Winery on Shore drive to celebrate daughter's birthday. Seated right away. Service was excellent. Food was outstanding. We ordered appetizer of artichoke dip- some of the best we have had. We each ordered a variety of the salads. This included Cesar, beet, and house Mermaid. All were outstanding. Very large could have easily shared one for 2 people. Entrees included grilled salmon, duck and lamb shank. Everyone said they would reorder the same dish and recommend for other folks. I love pesto and sour cream so felt like the mermaid fries were literally made for me lol! We ate them all and the waiter was friendly. I also got the scallops dinner which was delicious too. We went here for my birthday dinner. They gave me a complementary birthday drink with a candle in it which I loved! We started with the spinach and artichoke dip which was delicious - good balance of flavor and creaminess. I had the chicken pasta - literally the largest plate of pasta ever. The sauce was quite good and had some fresh notes. The chicken was a little dry. My husband had the duck. It was a cohesive dish and each element was well done. For desert we had the chocolate cake. Most review ratings are relative. If you've been to an array of really great restaurants then the rating would be based on minute details, differentiating only by a hair. But when my beau and I have had 2 weeks eating at various restaurants here in VA Beach and OBX and Wilmington NC and most are mediocre, Mermaid Winery unequivocally bubbles to the top! A nice spot for a group outing! We were visiting VA beach and after a day at a beach this was a great place to wind down and have dinner. We were lucky enough to get a same-day private room reservation for our large party of 10. Also, I'm a HUGE sucker for charcuterie boards (so if you are too, then this is your place!) I also ordered the Soup of the Day and the Chicken Pasta, which, I have to say, the portions are gigantic, so you will not leave hungry. Baked Brie and Charcuterie Board: My friend ordered this and I got to try some. If I had to order one, I'd probably pick the Baked Brie, but mainly because I just love gooey melted brie. Also, whatever those pita chip things they serve with these boards is SO GOOD. The only thing I didn't quite get was the side salad served with the charcuterie, I thought that was odd and not a normal thing you'd see with a charcuterie board. Soup of the Day: Didn't catch the name, but the day we went it was some sort of Thai creamy potato soup with chorizo sausage, crab, and shrimp. It was LOADED. This soup was so good - salty, creamy, and there was so much stuff in it (it's not one of those empty soups). And again it was a LARGE soup. I definitely filled up on the soup alone and it was pretty heavy, so keep in mind it might make it a little hard to finish your entree! Chicken Pasta: Definitely looked creamier in photos than what I got, I was expecting a little more sauce. The pasta was good, but the grilled chicken was very very salty and slightly on the dry side. They have free wine tastings on Friday's starting at 4pm, otherwise wine tasting was $20, reasonable for the amount received. They make their own wine and offer other wines and liquor. The wine glass rack tree they serve the tastings in has regular size wine glasses for the normal 1oz pour. Great presentation! Great wine and an interesting collection of wines to choose from. I want to love Mermaid on Shore Drive, but after multiple tries I keep running into the same issue. The place tends to have an unappealing odor. This is probably not a huge deal for most, but three out of three visits have been marred by an appetite-killing general smell. The experience we just had at this winery was extremely underwhelming and disappointing. To start the hostess was non-existent when we came in. There was a party that had been waiting for a bit before for a table to be prepared and seemed like they might have even been forgotten about. Then we went through three different servers at our table before anyone actually said they were our waiter. The second waiter who we thought was our waiter declined taking our drink order and said she had too much to do as she was walking away from our table (in case anyone cares she is a young lady with brunette hair and a grouchy disposition). Our actual waiter didn't even introduce herself, we had to ask her name and extend a salutation. Her name was Morgan and she clearly was having a rough night as she was covering both the bar and two other tables. So it seems as though staffing is an issue for this location, especially at dinner time on a Friday evening. We ordered appetizers and a wine tower, but our menus did get removed from our table so we ended up not ordering anything else. It pretty much felt like we had been ignored most of our time there. It seemed most everyone was having a grand time (including some of the cooking staff) conversing with a woman at the bar. Which by the way one of the line cooks ate from her plate, seems she is family or something. But we were barely checked. Which was a bummer because once I looked up the menu on my phone and saw they had good desserts options, I wanted to order a creme brûlée. But because no one came back to offer a dessert menu or even our check, my husband went to the bar to get our check so we could go. My husband and I had a really nice time here this past Saturday. The food was delicious (Southern Belle Burger and Blackened Tuna Tacos). The fresh, hot fries were also yummy. It was a really nice setting. We were disappointed to hear that we couldn't do a flight because it took too many glasses and they didn't do tasting for groups over 4. Went in on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Not too busy but they put us on the covered porch in the back which was lovely and private for our party of 10. Service was very slow. Staff wasn't very knowledgeable on the wines and it took a long time for us to get 2 bottles of wine. 2 servers kept coming back and forth but did not deliver. Note: we could not do flights. Great winery with two locations in VB and Norfolk. The Norfolk location is nicer though. The hostess at this one was a little rude when explaining that they don't offer tastings only flights. She also couldn't figure out how to check us out for the bottle of wine we bought. The waiters were lovely. The crème brûlée was delicious and the fruit was fresh. Quite pricey at $10 for the crème brûlée and $15 for the flight. The wines were all $25+. While the wine is pretty good, $30 is a bit steep. read more

Came here with some girlfriends to celebrate after a day of wedding dress shopping. We started with a few flights which were pleasant, and ordered a charcuterie board and our entrees. The charcuterie board was...underwhelming. We spent extra for the assorted meats (otherwise they are NOT included) and were immediately disappointed. She was nervous to tell the waitress, but when she let the waitress know, her verbatim response was "well you don't have to eat it, but you do have to pay for it". Craig was the bartender of the evening, who was beyond awesome. He was knowledgeable about the menu and a pleasure to chat with throughout the night. He suggested their signature flight, which featured five of the Mermaid wines. Overall, the flight was fantastic. The Poseidon was my favorite, although I didn't expect to love it. Even after trying the array of wines, I would probably continue to get the flight since it's so balanced and fun. No complaints! Food-wise, I ordered the beet salad, assuming it would be a nice starter before ordering an entree. To my surprise, the portion was bigger than I expected and filled me up nicely. It was a great salad; flavorful candied pecans, light dressing, creamy burrata and perfectly toasted bread alongside. It was delicious, try it! Mermaid Winery was a very welcoming and fun atmosphere. I had only visited their Norfolk location back when they very first opened and maybe one other time after that, so when I heard they opened a location in Virginia Beach I decided to try it out. I tried their mermaid flight as I wanted to be able to try their wines rather than wines from another company. They were pretty good; the peach and Malbec were my favs. I will say the pours are the smallest pours I've ever had in a tasting or flight. We also tried some of their food. We did a cheeseboard where we chose 3 different cheeses: burrata, one with their Malbec, and a honey goat. They were all good, especially the one they make. The board was filled with lots of yummy accompaniments. For lunch I had the chicken salad sandwich. This was HUGE and delicious. I wasn't expecting there to be Brie on the sandwich, which was a great surprise. I opted to upgrade my side to the beet salad which comes with candied pecans and burrata, which were both on the board but I still loved it. If I came back I would maybe just do the sandwich since it was so big and I couldn't finish - or maybe share. Since it was a weekday lunch, it also came with a glass of wine. I was able to upgrade my wine for $4 to any wine I wanted, so I upgraded to their Mermaid sparkling wine which was really nice. For dessert we got the fondue chocolate board. This was decent, but it doesn't come with a lot of fondue. It's definitely a dark chocolate and the accompaniments are heavy so it was a bit much. Glad we shared between 3 people! I've been to this winery twice now. I love mermaids and I love wine, so this winery was a win/win! Both experiences were great ones, and the wines were delicious! The first time, I got the mermaid flight and really liked it, except the Cabernet. I'm not a Cabernet girl anymore for personal reasons lol. But a friend got the cab flight and loved it. The second time, I got the rosé flight and that was much more my style. I enjoyed all the rosés on that flight. The sweet kisses wine is also delicious, and we get a bottle of that each time we come as well. This time, we decided to stay and have dinner as well. It was delicious! The wine flights here are the tiniest pours I've ever had. $15 for five glasses that have two sips each. The carrot cake was different than I've had before but good in its own way with caramelized pineapple on top. Be forewarned if you have a party of 8 or more there is a more limited menu and no wine flights offered. So we decided to split a meal. The Atlantic Salmon served 2 grilled fillets so it was perfect! When it came out, I couldn't wait to dig into it. The coconut quinoa, fresh greens and carrots paired so well with the salmon! Wasn't heavy and hit the spot. We enjoyed dinner so much that we had to check out their wines after we payed the bill. I got the salmon , that usually comes with quinoa but I asked for the truffle mashed potatoes instead. It was so good! I also tried their tuna bite nacho appetizer. My lady is truly a wine enthusiast, and I'm a bit of a wine geek myself, so we thought we'd search for a winery while in Virginia Beach. We found this place on Google, and unlike many other wineries in the area, they weren't all about sweet wines and fruit wines. Plus their food menu looked good too, so we thought we'd stop by for dinner... And it was absolutely a great decision! My lady and I stopped by a around 6pm and they didn't seem busy at all. The place itself is much bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside. When we walked in, we were greeted right away by the friendly host staff, and seat right away in a very nice outdoor area. Our server, Evan was immensely friendly and super knowledgeable of the menu and wine selections. Their wine menu is a mix of their own wines and wines from other wineries. Their food menu isn't huge but has a great variety. We started out with the Mermaid Flight (Mermaid Winery Poseidon's Red chambourcin, Mermaid Winery Cabernet Sauvignon, Mermaid Winery Norfolk Express (Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon), Mermaid Winery My Beach Peach Chardonnay, Mermaid Winery Raspberry Zinfandel of wine and a charcuterie board complete with aged manchego, malbec, brie, house cured salmon, capicola, soppressata. All the wines on the flighy were very tasty and the charcuterie board was LOADED with all sorts of goodies. At first, we thought we'd get two entrees after the board, but when we were done, we decided to split one entree instead, and we decided to split the Atlantic salmon. Perfect since it came with two pieces of salmon. We also ordered a bottle of Two Mountain Cabernet Franc since the bottles were half off for happy hour (half off excludes Mermaid Winery wines). The salmon was amazing and went so well with all the coconut quinoa and greens. It was decadent but healthy at the same time. Surprise there, right? And the wine went very well with it too. When we were done with it all, we decided to check out their bottles for sale, and got a few bottles from their winery to take home with us (a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Cabernet Franc). They have lots of options for bottles to go. This is a great spot for wine enthusiasts, wine geeks, and wine snobs as well as people who aren't so much into wine and just love fine cuisine. Absolutely nothing bad to say about this place. This location is a huge step above the location off 21st street in Norfolk. The parking lot is spacious, and so is the restaurant. They have seating outside as well as in, a tasting room, and a nice view of the barrels that store their wine. I went here for my birthday lunch and was very pleased. The server was very knowledgeable, patient and accommodating. There are multiple types of wine flights for all types of wine drinkers. At the table: Cheese & Charcuterie Board: This had 3 different cheeses, pickles, olives, smoked salmon, almonds, raisins, kimchi, crackers, etc. (See picture. I've had plenty charcuterie boards, but nothing on this scale. This was the king of all charcuterie boards. There was absolutely no way this was going to be finished. Sweet wine flight: This consisted of 5 different samples of wines. Fritz Muller Sparkling, Baci Dolci "Blonde", Pineapple Moscato, Sobara Lambrusco, Baci Dolci "Sweet Kiss". I purchased 3 bottles to go. Although this wasn't a lunch or dinner experience, my time here was much needed and Mermaid Winery didn't disappoint.
