Adam came by the house today to see what was causing our well water system to not operate correctly. He checked the system out and it appears that a check valve and part of the pressure switch had gone bad. He replaced the parts and got us back up and running. I live in College Park, and I knew that my water (municipal water) was leaving gross scale on our bathroom fixtures and was therefore hard water. I also noticed that our water smelled very heavily of chlorine. I wanted to hire a company to soften our water and install a reverse osmosis drinking water system, but I honestly didn't know where to start. Something like 20 years ago in a different state we had purchased a Culligan water softener system, so I started my quest to look into water softener companies by calling Culligan. I am a member of Costco, so I also called Costco's water treatment folks, who happen to be Carroll Water in my area (who sell EcoWater systems). Both the Culligan and the Carroll Water systems seemed nearly identical; both use electricity, have electric timers for their salt water washes that you have to pre-set and worry about re-setting if the electricity goes out, are rather large systems, etc. One was a bit more expensive than the other (it actually annoyed me to no end that EcoWater/Carroll Water/Costco have some kind of buy-a-water-system-get-a-HUGE-Costco-gift-card thing going on...just seems way too gimmicky). My father, an engineer with tons of patents, lives in another state and had purchased a Kinetico water softener system and loved it. He told me I really needed to try to find a Kinetico dealer in my area so I could take a look at them, also. So I found Mermaid Water. I was impressed that their system didn't use electricity and that the salt water backwash system kicked in because of usage and not because of electric programming. To me, this seemed much more efficient than having a system that just always backwashed on Sundays at 3 am or whatever. The Mermaid Water representative who came to my house initially (Ed Owens) was also very flexible about the installation process - far FAR more than the Culligan or Carroll Water folks. I also LOVED that the Kinetico system was so much smaller and had such a smaller footprint than the Culligan or EcoWater systems, for we were limited on space. Even though Kinetico/Mermaid was a bit more expensive than Culligan and Carroll Water, I chose them. I'm very glad I did, but I didn't really understand why until after I had the installation team come in with our new equipment. The Kinetico installation team was absolutely amazing. Truly. Brad King, the son of the owner, did the install, and he is absolutely a master plumber. No one could have done a better job. He came into my house, created phenomenal ways to get the job done while minimizing the footprint of the machines and maximizing the benefit to my house - I am so grateful to him. And as he did the install, I asked him a thousand questions and he was SO patient and answered them all. And it was during this time that I became much more educated about the equipment and so grateful that I had chosen to purchase it rather than anything else. For example, I watched while Brad set the clockwork discs/gears that tick down to when the softener enters a backwash cycle. Basically what happens is that as you use water, the machine slowly ticks down via a small clocklike gear until it's time to start a backwash cycle. Then one part of the machine backwashes while the other is still filtering your water. The cool thing is that the Kinetico equipment actually backwashes itself with treated water (the others don't), which lengthens the life of your equipment. And since only one side of the water softener (there are two sides - basically two water softener units that sit side by side) regenerates/backwashes at a time, the other side is always still filtering your water. Whereas with Culligan or EcoWater, their machines don't do this - the whole setup backwashes all at one time, leaving untreated water coming into your house. Also, because usage is measured via a mechanical clockwork gear and not an electrical panel in the Kinetico systems, there are less electrical parts that can fail in the future, and you don't need an electrical outlet nearby to plug the machines into (which made me happy - I didn't have to get an electrician out to run wiring for a new plug). The Kinetico system typically backwashes more frequently than the other systems, since it backwashes based on usage, leaving me to surmise that you could absolutely be put in a position with units that only do this based on timers where your system is gunky and needs to backwash but hasn't yet done so because the timer hasn't told it to. And the Kinetico system uses far, FAR less salt during backwashes, thus FAR less salt overall. I would much rather have equipment that backwashes when it knows it needs to based on its own usage than a system that backwashes once a week based on a timer. Their reverse osmosis system is also stellar; it has powerful water pressure - much better than other RO systems. We are THRILLED with our Kinetico equipment and THRILLED with Mermaid Water! The best brand of equipment out there. read more

I can't understand why anyone uses culligan. Mermaid put a whole house softener in my restaurant after my second water heater blew up from scale buildup. Culligan had a softener in here but every time I call them, a different person showed up, charged me 300$ for something they said they did and said "Give it a few days to generate and you will be fine". Terrific small company that sells Kinetico (hands-down-the-best) reverse osmosis drinking filter system. Service tech was gracious and knowledgeable, came out to Gambrills, MD within a couple of days to evaluate my water, and installed my new system within a week. Excellent service, very professional. From my first call to Mermaid Water was to Lisa she was so professional, and friendly. The price I got from Mermaid was less than half of another company. Kody came out first and tested my water and mentioned what he thought I should get. I did ask for more info and Brent came out and explained to me how things work and his thoughts. My next contact was with Becca who is also amazing she went out of her way to get the install as soon as possible. Thus leads me to Jason. This man has amazing customer service. He explained everything and how to operate my equipment. Jason went way above and beyond what was asked and expected of the company. Jason took the time to treat my home as if it were his own. I've had Mermaid Water Kinetico for 8 years now and their customer service has been excellent. My water tastes great and my friends love drinking my water, they were so surprised at how clean it tasted. My representative Randy is a down to earth people person and is very helpful and knowledgeable. I would recommend them to anyone looking for better water and better health. The Kinetico concept sounds great, but in my experience the products fail to deliver. It may in fact be partly due to the installation (Mermaid). Whatever the case, my experience included numerous service calls for "debris" in the head. Assertion that the periodic briny water coming from the tap just couldn't be. The addition (at my expense) of a lockout device that would certainly solve the problem - but didn't. Multiple service calls from Mermaid where they failed to bring sufficient chemicals. Info given to the call taker that never gets passed to the technician. Also consider the value of a 10 year warranty when you get hit for a couple hundred in labor costs every couple of months. Personally. I'd recommend a less pricey, less proprietary solution. read more

Solved my hard water problem in about 4 hours! The previous owner of the house installed a whole home filtration system, but it wasn't stopping the huge amount of chlorine or hardness from Spotsylvania county water. Nick, the installer, went over every section of the system to help me understand how it works, and how to maintain the system, which is minimal - open the lid, if the salt is low, add some more...simple. A small leak happened overnight and he was back the next day to fix it. I would definitely recommend Mermaid to my friends or anyone who is looking for a water softening system. read more

First and foremost I want to acknowledge the Exceptional customer service from Russ, an installer/repair guy at Mermaid Water. Due to some special requests I had for my installation, I had to have installers out here 3 times. Russ was here the first time and did a great job and was extremely professional and very easy to work with. The second guy that came out was ok, but didn't do the job right. I requested Russ to come out and fix the issue from the previous guy and again, Russ did a great job. It is rare to find someone as genuinely interested in what the customer wants and in ensuring everything is as expected before leaving. Thanks for the great work Russ. Overall my experience with Mermaid was excellent and the water softening system I had added to my home has worked great. I recently called Mermaid Water about a problem with a small water heater upstairs. They determined it was the anode rod (inside the water heater). We were so impressed with the customer service we received from the minute we decided to call Mermaid Water. We were also impressed they showed up when they said they would and on time! We didn't know what kind of system we needed, just that we were tired of having iron stains on our tubs & toilets & having very hard well water. Randy went over all our options & helped us find the best system for our house & budget. They came out the very next week (they gave us a 2hr window and were actually early) and installed our new Kinetico water system within 1.5 hrs as estimated. The team they sent (Josh & his assistant -sorry so bad with names)were so knowledgeable & efficient. They both were very friendly and even liked our dogs! I live in Howard County, Maryland. We got a reminder card in the mail for annual service and scheduled it. The bill was $402.00, and included a i$219.00 "Trip Charge", which was more than half the bill. In the past, service came from a location in Maryland and the bill was around $200. I asked for a refund of the trip charge, and they never responded. Beware of this business, They should have disclosed the trip charge before coming. I will not use them again. read more

We have hard, acidic well water in our house and, as a result, have had numerous problems with our well and our water system (plus every appliance in our house that uses water). Our water stopped working last night--AGAIN--so we called Mermaid. They sent out a technician first thing this morning. He did a thorough check of our water system and found that the well pump is not working, so we will have to call another company for that service. Mermaid's technician, Nick, was knowledgable and professional, and explained each check he performed. He took a lot of time to diagnose the problem, but did not charge a service fee since he wasn't able to correct the problem. Great service, would definitely recommend this company. read more

Do not use this service provider for anything. I only called them because their water softening system was in the house I bought. I called for a tech to come out and service the system. The guy shows up, services the system and leaves. A few hours later I go back down to my basement and the salt bin is overflowing and flooding. I called them to come back out and fix the problem, they show up and say it wasn't their fault, even though their guy had just serviced the unit. They refused to do anything thing to clean up the mess, though they did fix the valve in the salt bin. I will never call them for anything and I would encourage anyone in the market to seek out someone else to provide service. They will not stand by their work. read more

I called them because they are apparently who installed the system here, they sent out a young kid named Josh. He was very rude and condescending when I asked him a question. He left and when I went downstairs to turn off the lights, he left on, I saw water all over my floor. My brine tank was leaking everywhere, I called him back and he tried to say it was my fault, even though he was just there and I did not even touch it. He told me I did not know what I was talking about. He just plain out rude and argumentative. Upon looking up other reviews for local water treatment companies the same 'Josh' name pops up, I am fairly certain this is the same kid, he has the same demeanor, I see he has this issue with ALL companies he has worked for. BEWARE of this technician! He is very rude and lies!! I will never call Mermaid again if this is the type of people they hire. Funny thing is he tried to sell me on calling him from now on and not the company. He obviously has no moral, Mermaid would be doing themselves a favor and getting rid of this crap so-called water treatment technician. read more
