I have taken hand-building and multiple wheel classes. I'm currently in the advanced wheel class where the owner is my instructor and she is truly amazing. I can see my progress with every class, and I feel like I have gotten a lot out of my experiences here. I have really awesome pottery I have made myself, but I also find myself feeling more confident creatively! McKenzie is very easy to get in contact with, she is very responsive to any questions I have asked, and really does what she can to make sure you get the most out of your class. Owner Rebecca Koop is the perfect host and tour guide through her magical land of art, nature, education, commerce, conservation and most importantly community. The pottery for sale is amazing and the prices are right in line. Most pieces for sale are both functional and beautiful. There are also classes available to learn the art of ceramics. While this would define most pottery businesses, Back Door's magical element actually lies outside the building. As you approach the building make sure that you take a close look at the front façade; it may look like a intricate paint job but it is actually a ceramic tile mosaic that was 15 years in planning and 2+ years of installation. It is truly mind boggling to see it up close and discover the details and hidden creations in the 450 square feet of art. After you are awed by the tile work, step to the west side of the building and observe the mural that wraps itself around the the side to connect to the mosaic - fascinating in it's own right. The Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood garden is also on the property and is fascinating to explore with the garden beds, small orchard, water retention systems and folk art all condensed on to a large city lot. Back Door Pottery is just one more hidden jewel that makes Kansas City a true arts mecca!
