Two years ago, I was mysteriously felled by joint pain that left me unable to do more than walk…read moreslowly. I went to several doctors, and after several blood tests the results came up nil. "We don't know what's wrong with you. Let's take yet another blood test that isn't covered by your health insurance!" Why I didn't go to acupuncture immediately as soon as any and all major chronic illnesses were ruled out, I don't know. But finally I did, to the very capable and easy going Dr. Hou. He is a very lovely and kind man, with a gentle demeanor that almost belies his vast expertise. He is a medical doctor of both western and eastern persuasions, teaches at Harvard Medical School, and has a fervent fondness for his home town of Shanghai, hence the name. I was in chronic, terrible pain for two month's straight, and after two weeks of lying on Dr Hou's table with needles sticking out of my forehead, ears, and shins, I started to feel better. Within a month I was back to my old self. I received a student discount, with each session being $45, back in 2006. The rates may have gone up, but this seemed reasonable to me, particularly since I'd spent $500 on blood tests that produced no results whatsover. Also, he had very, very flexible hours - he can meet you very late (like 7pm) or very early, whatever you need. I would highly recommend Dr. Hou. Check out his website for full details on all the ways he can help you.

I've been going to Shanghai Acupuncture for the past 3 weeks and I really like this place…read more I was being treated at Dana Faber cancer institute and my oncologist suggested I visit the Zakim Center for Integrative Therapies to make an appointment to start acupuncture treatment. When I did, I was informed that the first available appointment for a consultation was 3 weeks away. The receptionist gave me the names of the 3 acupuncturists who practice there and suggested I google them to find out where else they practice in case I could get to see one of them sooner So this is how I came across Dr Hou whos practice is close to Coolidge Corner, across a Green Line T stop. Being new to acupuncture I wanted someone who has specialized in treating cancer patients, and the endorsement doesn't get much better than being employed by a cancer clinic. I started my treatment 3 weeks ago and I'm close to finishing my first course. In my experience Dr Hou is always courteous and efficient and goes out of his way to accommodate your schedule and needs. I can't say yet whether the treatment is working or yet but I've decided I'm going to continue going and have a second treatment course The only problem is that you have to pay out of pocket and get your medical insurance to reimburse you. I haven't had any money back yet so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I will but to be fair, this would have been the case had I been treated at Dana Faber. Some medical insurance providers don't have many acupuncturists on their lists I haven't tried his herbal services so can't comment on that

I believe he has the intuition and sensitivity it takes to tune into a paerson' constitution, temperament, metabolism and more. His consultation is brief. His charge is affordable even for people with limited finances. ?It is a very good investment in one's health to use herbs even as preventative, like tune-ups, so one does not become ill. The herbs Dr Wong prescribes, and need to be cooked at home in a non-corroding ceramic or enamel pot, are inexpensive, effective and have no side effects, unlike Western alopathic pharmaceuticals covered by insurances.

Dr. Wang is a miracle worker. Back in July, I broke out into a very severe rash. I went to the…read moredoctor several times to try and identify the cause to no avail. They gave me steroid cream. They drew blood for allergies tests. Everything came back normal even the test for lobster, which I happen to know I am allergic to. When I eat lobster, my breathing becomes affected. Perplexed by the results, I called the doctor to tell him that I thought the tests were wrong. He was looking at my records and said to me, "Well, you're seeing the allergist on the 17th. In the meantime, you can do your own allergy testing." "What do you mean, Doctor?", I replied. "You can eat some lobster", he said. Dumbfounded, I lost my ability to speak for a moment. Then he said, "What happens when you eat it?" I said, "I can't breathe" to which he replied, "Oh. Don't do that." He then wished me luck and the phone call ended. So did my confidence in the medical establishment. During this whole debacle, my friend told me about Dr. Wang. A long time ago, she broke out into a serious rash and Dr. Wang healed her. After the phone call with my doctor, I decided to pay a visit to him. I went to his office mid-afternoon on a Tuesday, signed in and was seen almost immediately. Dr. Wang did a pulse reading on me, asked me some questions, and confirmed some things about my health (he said my lungs were weak which is true - I have asthma). We spoke for a few minutes and he asked me if I was able to drink the tea. I said yes. He mentioned that it did not taste good. That was okay with me. I was beginning to look like Jeff Goldblum in "The Fly" so I figured the taste might appeal to me or I would endure it out of desperation. He gave me the instructions on when and how to take the tea. Patients have the option of brewing the tea themselves or buying it pre-made; I opted for the latter. I had to wait for about 90 minutes for the tea to be ready which was totally fine with me. I ran some errands while I was waiting. The pulse reading was $20 and is free if you buy the tea. The tea, I am happy to say, is not the worst thing I have ever tasted. Based on some of the reviews here I anticipated it would taste like vomit. It is quite bitter and basically tastes like a herbal remedy. I probably would not chose this brew at Tealuxe but I have been able to drink it with no problem at all. I have about three teas left. The best part this whole thing is that the itching has subsided and my rash is almost completely gone. Dr. Wang is a true expert and healer. Some of the complaints on here are directed at the fact that he does not spend a lot of time with you. He doesn't have to. He is an expert and can accurately diagnosis within a very short amount of time. What I love about his approach is that it is truly holistic. He got to the root of the problem instead of just trying to get rid of the symptoms. Dr. Wang is a very nice man. I will go back to him in the future for other treatments. He healed me and I am very grateful to him.
