    Cod risotto

I love this Portuguese restaurant in Rio, very authentic. Most of the dish are cod based. It gets very busy so make sure you make a reservation or get there early. The store front is a grocery with Portuguese specialties. The only problem is that none of them speak English, so the ordering took a little bit long. They do have English menu and they just compare both menu to take the order. So if you have any question you might need to have a good translator. The sadine appetizer comes with two 6inch long fishes and they are whole fish not cleaned with small bones, so be warned if you are not a fan of the bones. Their specialty dessert is very sweet, very delicious with a lot of custard filling. It's good to share since it's a very big portion. All the other food we ordered are very delicious. A little bit on the salty side because they all cooked with olives.

We walked by this place several times during our stay here in Ipanema and finally made it our last night 1/25/20 and I'm so glad we did! Service was great! The restaurant was clean, food was amazing!! We started off with the Alheira croquettes - they are made with chicken, Portuguese chorizo, bread crumbs, olive oil, garlic and onion and served with a lime. DELICIOUS!! Not dry at all and deep fried to perfection. They were not greasy either. Next we had the Tábua da Adega which is basically a chartreuse board with 3 types of meat, 3 cheeses, walnuts, cashews, apricots and 2 bread rolls Based on the menu here's what was on it: -Queijos Grana Padano, Gouda e Brie, Salame espanhol Casaponsa, salame tipo italiano e Jamon Serrano com 12 meses de cura. Mix de castanha de caju e nozes, damasco seco e dois de nossos pães rusticos. For my entree I had the Mixed Skewer -Filet mignon, chicken, pepperoni sausage, peppers, smoked bacon, and onion marinated in spiced oil. Accompanied by sautéed calabrian potatoes with onion and peppers, egg farofa, roasted banana and pineapple vinaigrette Let me tell you I've never had a skewer that tasted this good before. The pineapple vinaigrette paired perfectly with ALL of the meats. The egg farofa is like mothing I've ever tasted before. It wasn't "eggy" at all. It was like a fluffy egg stuffing. I'm not quite sure how to describe it. It wasn't dry, it wasn't moist or gooey. It was seriously PERFECT! The potatoes were also cooked perfectly. Not overcooked or undercooked. This is a MUST stop if you are in the area

Wondering around for a place to have dinner we ran into Mercearia. All the tables were taken and we interpreted it as a good sign and it certainly did not disappoint us. The fillet mignon in a bed of potatoes and caramelizaré onions was great! The service was also very accommodating to use Google translator to answer our questions. Friends enjoyed the ceviche and cod dish as well.

Great service, the waiter did not behave like we needed to keep ordering to keep the table. He let us be and come around every so often to see for more drinks orders. I was very happy that they left us alone and let us hang out and take our time. I always like places like that cause over Time my friends and I will spend more and not having the feeling of being rushed is pretty nice. Outside sidewalk sitting, they have tables at the sidewalk where they have plenty of covers so you are able to sit outside even if it is raining. Home made spicy sauce that is worth the try for sure. But not for the faint of heart. it is a strong sauce so make sure to try very little before tossing the sauce over all the food. Strawberry ginger caipirinha - nice and strong, there was plenty of strawberries in there and we even got to choose if we wanted cachaca or vodka in it. Yuca and cheese balls - strong yucca taste however the cheese is also present on the taste. This is a more acquired taste for sure but none the less very tasty and above all filling appetizer. Crab pastel- amazed, the amount of filling is very satisfying. They come out fresh! You can drop lime on it and just enjoy it's amazing an pastel. Cod croquette- if you are a cod lover this is a must, although ironically I had to add some salt to it, none the less it was pretty tasty! With the olive oil and their home made spicy oil this is going to take your cod love a whole another level. It is a pretty name appetizer and as expected fried to order and super fresh. Dog friendly, you can have your best friend with you with no issues. at the end they charge your card with a mobile machine so you get charged right then and there no need for them to take the card inside and wait till it back, super convenient. I would love to go back there. I had a great time, the next day while walking the street the waiter even recognized us and said hello!!!

If you are a foreigner or tourist, I recommend you go to Gaja d'Oro instead…read more Much better food, better service, similar Portuguese high end menu and in a far superior location. Rancho Portuguese is directly across from a well lit gas station on a double lane highway. I used to come to Rancho Portuguese often. Been more than 10 times. But sadly one day I realized they prefer Brazilian clientele and hate serving foreigners or gringos. You experience these sort of ignorant Cariocas here and there when you spend a lot of time in Rio. So after waiting over an hour for food and watching my glass sit empty for 20 minutes while also observing him attentively serve every Brazilian, seeing their food arrive, etc....I asked to cancel my order. Instead of apologizing or even making an attempt to fix the problem, his cocky response was to smile broadly, give me a sarcastic thumbs up, insult me in Portuguese while thinking I don't understand him, and mockingly wave at me as I walked out of the restaurant. So now I go to Gaja D'Oro. It is in a beautiful building by the beach, offers much better service, a similar high end Portuguese menu, and I have never been offended to my face after being a loyal customer who spent more than 500 reals per person every time I went.

We were a a party of 14, and i know it's a lot to handle but from the start we were not attended correctly. Ordering food and drinks was a mess bc the server never asked for our drinks so we were all asking whoever passed by at different times since we had to be divided into 3 separate tables. Also we didnt receive everything that was promised with the feijoada rodicio. We were supposed to receive some sort of "shots" but we did not. It's a fairly small restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating, and the crowd seemed to be mostly locals--which is always a good sign. They're known for their traditional Feijoada (black bean stew), but I decided to go with the Filé Mignon com Catupiry (Filet Mignon with Catupiry cheese). I was a little skeptical at first--I'd never had filet with a cheese sauce before--but oh my god, it was delicious! The Catupiry cheese is seriously amazing. I definitely recommend this place if you're in the area. Next time, I think I'll finally try their famous Feijoada!
