I was hoping to love this place because it's so close to my summer house but they need to get their priorities in order. I've been 3 times and each time was a alright experience, enough to go back but not enough to write a good review, today was a different story. Today I ordered 2 bagels and 2 iced coffees. Iced coffee is mediocre at best and its DIY, fill your own cup with ice, pour the coffee, and then add your milk and sugar if you want, kinda annoying since they have 5 people buttering bagels, it's not Starbucks, regardless, let's get to the food. I ordered 2 bagels, the next 3 people all ordered breakfast sandwiches. I finished my iced coffee and they all got their bacon egg and cheeses before I got my 2 bagels. I legit waited 20 mins for my 1 bagel toasted with butter and 1 with cream cheese. My tip is order a bfest sangy if you want something to eat quick. I ordered one last week and the egg is precooked, not ideal and borderline gross. Finally I get my bagel and its burnt to a crisp. Brutal! 2 stars instead of zero stars for location, being open, having some sort of caffeine, and the girls behind the counter have good attitudes, they deserve a raise. Nothing says "Cape morning" like a steaming cup of coffee and a muffin from the Mercantile. The iside has creeky wood floors and a warm yellow glow. Upstairs you'll find a small art gallery, as well as additional seating (tables and lounge chairs), a great selection of magazines, and free wifi. There's also outdoor seating out back and rocking chairs on the front porch. Great little place with lots of charm! read more

This place is tucked behind the post office. Great sandwiches, fresh ingredients. I'm pretty sure they make their own bread. I usually get the Italian Stallion, They have baked goods as well. I've only tried the China cookies - the first time they were fresh, but the second, a bit stale. read more

Food is always a 5/5. But the girls that work here are unfriendly and not concerned about providing exellent service. Yeah yeah I bet you wish you were on the beach working on your tan, but you could atleast pretend to care about your costumers. Cape Cod is filled with lovely friendly beach towns its too bad the service here is completely lacking. Probably because the guy who took over here is also unfriendly and doesn't seem like he really truly cares about the merc. It's a shame. The Merk is one of my favorite spots to get a sandwich, on or off cape. Family owned, great service and quality products. They have their sandwich creations, which stay the same year after year...and never disappoint. The roast beef is delish, and the BLT is better than any other. Can't leave Dennis w/out a stop! Enthusiastic five stars! My sister and I contacted Mercantile to cater for a backyard surprise birthday party for our parents 70th birthdays. It was for a group of family and friends -- about 50 in total -- with some food allergies and requirements. Mercantile was on board for the challenge and created a perfect menu for the event. We had appetizers and entrees that were delicious, with easy heat up instructions and garnishes. Guests from the Truro area (and elsewhere) raved about the food and asked where it was from. Their sandwiches would otherwise be good but not spectacular if it wasn't for the bread which is absolutely fantastic, homemade and to die for. Had chicken salad on marble rye and couldn't stop eating it. Loved the atmosphere too, with the art on the second floor. Great place. read more

The Merc' is the heart and soul of Dennis. I have been a customer of the Mercantile for over three decades and it has never changed in its quality and customer service. Yes, of course (as a few "NY minute" based reviews claimed) there are busy days when you have to wait a bit longer and of course they run out of their FRESH products from time to time but isn't that better than hauling stuff out of the deep freezer or off the back of a Sysco truck? As THE community place to go for nourishment of the body and the soul, the Merc is an institution in Dennis that can't be beat - and for good reason. The home made food - pastries, muffins (apple crumb can't be beat), desserts, generously portioned gourmet sandwiches, hot/cold deli salads, soups and luncheon specials - are always fresh and delicious. The art, congenial gathering spaces and nooks both downstairs and upstairs, wi fi, good reads, community bulletin board, and the owner Megan's always cheerful, gracious and efficient manner... make the Mercantile such a wonderful place to go. It's always bustling and people go out of their way to hold doors, give up seats or make room for others - it's that type of vibe. Their catering is second to none and ALWAYS exactly what you want. A gorgeous whole salmon with a variety of sauces and garnish? 3 meat stations? A vegetarian display that even avid meat eaters will devour? A small luncheon for 8 or the works for an outdoor birthday party with 80 guests? They do it all and consistently top notch for everyone that hires them. Menu looks good HOWEVER it states they close at 4:00 got there around 2:45 and the girl says "we close at 3:00." We quickly look at menu to make our order (there was 3 of us) get up to the counter and she says "we only have bread for 2 sandwiches." Why didn't she say that BEFORE we looked at the menu?? We won't be going back. We found better sandwiches for less money just a little ways up the road. read more

Everything I have tried here is delicious. The kitchen salad is out of this world especially the ploughman. Their garden salads are amazing. They make their own almond butter. I originally came in here for lunch last summer. They had a number of sandwich and soups available. The homemade bread was delicious! We had the Cape Coddah (Turkey breast, homemade stuffing, cranberry sauce) and the simple Turkey Delite (Havarti, tomato, bacon). Both were so simple yet good that we asked if they would make our pies for our wedding. Yes, we decided to have a pie bar instead of a big wedding cake. Megan at the Merc was a pleasure to work with. She was organized and worked with our caterer to make sure everything went smoothly. They had a tasting of four different pies which blew us away! We ended up getting Apple Cran Crumble, Kentucky Bourbon, and Strawberry Rhubarb. All three we're some of the best pies I've ever had! Highly recommended! read more

Food is good and so is the coffee. Service is HORRIBLE. The two girls taking orders had the personalities of dead fish. Like they were annoyed we were in there. They are also slow. The icing on the cake was when I ordered toast for my son. The chalkboard lists toast with jam as $2.10. I ordered toast with butter. The girl taking my order says it will be $3.58. But the toast is only $2.10, I say. She shrugged & said,"I put in toast and that is what it says". I responded by saying that on the menu board it is $2.10. She again shrugs (never making eye contact) and says, " I don't know. Maybe it is tax or something." I said it was not tax. She never responded and walked away. And there were 2 other people behind the counter that could have jumped in or that the employee could have asked to make sure the amount was correct. So disappointing. We have a home in Dennis and prefer to support local businesses over chain stores. I don't care how good the food is, we will never be back nor will we recommend this place to our seasonal renters. read more

I have been going to the Merc since I was a kid and am still finding more to love. My favorite sandwich has to be the French Connection, turkey and brie yum! Was cruising thru a part of the Cape we were unfamiliar with and looking for a good place to grab lunch. The Yelp app pointed us in the direction of the Mercantile...so happy we ended up here!! My hubs got the Cape Coddah, I had the veggie, and my kiddies had the ham and havarti. The breads were great, everyones plate was clean! I grabbed latte for our ride home, it was delish! Friendly and efficient staff, decent baked goods. Nothing earth-shattering, but solidly ok. Raspberry almond muffin was good. Ginger peach muffin was ok. Scone was a bit dry. Strawberry rhubarb turn over was ok. Decaf latte was good. Iced coffee with coffee ice cubes was a nice touch. Best muffins on the cape. Get there very early and get all the different varieties. You should get extra for your freezer. The cranberry almond was my nieces favorites. The merc muffin is a sort of morning glory, that my favorite. We usually get sandwiches there but not this week. They are always awesome. Go here and you'll be happy. read more

This place is a must-stop if you're in Dennis. I've been coming here for years, and it seems each year they get better and better. It's a very welcoming place. They have probably the best muffins on the cape. Great, big sandwiches with plenty of options. They're cookies and bars are incredible (buffalo chip cookie is unbelievable). They make they're own bread. They are reasonably priced and they give pretty large portioned sandwiches (many people get half sandwiches). The only down side of this place, if any, is that it can be insanely crowded on a summer Saturday (which means you know its good). But, it's worth the wait. They do call-in orders which is very helpful when you want to get sandwiches for the beach. Great food, friendly people, an all-around awesome place, in my opinion. read more

We've been here before and probably will come back, but today was not a stellar day at the Merc. Every thing was okay just not exceptional. I had the salad with turkey and chose dill dressing as it's not commonly a choice. Hubby had the Cape Coddah. He said it was just ok, but would give the dark roast coffee 4 stars. read more

Not quite sure why this place has gone down hill. It used to be a contender. Staff is pleasant, sandwiches would be better if the bread wasn't so dry.How could this happen on a Monday unless the bread is a few days old. Now the pea soup was another story. It was by far the worst I have ever had. We were a party of four each having the same pea soup which tasted as if they ran out and just added hot water. Not a place I could recommend.
