Standard deli meat sandwiches but not a place to go if you aren't willing to endure a long wait. It was going to take 30 minutes for sandwiches to be ready and the poor girl running the registered seemed to have lost an order. To bypass the wait, we opted to get the premade ones in the fridge which there were 4 options to choose from. The Cape Coddah with turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce wasn't anything special so I'd recommend opting for something else. The space itself seemed nice with lots of seating and natural light. There is an open upstairs seating area where you can watch the action below. While there is space to work out of there, it's a bit loud and I didn't see many outlets about. We stopped here while visiting the Cape out of season and could not have been happier! This quaint local spot was tucked away in Dennis and filled with happy customers. It's a locals go-to spot for a cozy morning coffee, a quick lunch, or an afternoon pastry. With options ranging from freshly brewed Cape Cod coffee to delectable pastries, and a menu featuring local and regional specials you're sure to find something you'll love! I haven't had something that I dislike here. I've been getting lunch from this spot since the mid 90's. It's as consistent as you could possibly get. I have my favorites on the menu (chicken salad sandwich called the Ploughman or the Turkey sandwich called the Mouthful) but I love knowing that on any given day I could just randomly choose ANYTHING on the menu to mix it up and know that I will enjoy it. The employees always greet you with a smile and kindness even when they are slammed with a lunch crowd. It has a classic ambiance of a lunch / coffeehouse with local artists work on the walls, nice old wooden floors, neatly written chalkboard menus in a great location north of 6A in Dennis and it is always CLEAN. It really doesn't get much nicer than that. The Merc is clearly managed with passion and care. As a side note I was recently diagnosed with celiac disease and I was thrilled to find that they offer gluten free bread, muffins, cookies and other assorted baked goods. Not only that but they are very careful to use a clean work space and make sure everything is safely prepped. Anyone who has to deal with any sort of severe food allergy know this means so much more than just having a good meal. I don't typically write reviews but I'm just grateful to have this spot to go to, finding solace that I can safely enjoy a meal there and know that I will love it every single time! read more

Honestly after reading the reviews about bad service I was nervous to come here but we stopped on the way to the beach for a couple sandwiches and had a great experience. The girls that work there were extremely nice and even helped us with some local tips on parking for Mayflower as the lot was full. Yes they're all teenagers but everyone we encountered was working fast and customer service was great. Sandwiches were very good, chicken salad sandwich is a must try. read more

Enjoyed our sandwiches here last year so made a note to go again this summer. Unfortunately service is extremely slow (30 minutes for 4 sandwiches) and our order was not correct once we received. We had waited so long we just made do, but our sandwiches were pretty dry. They have a lot of staff working (I saw 7 different people) but only 2 making sandwiches-a bigger counter to make orders and more staff on sandwich duty would probably make this a better experience all around! read more

An organization that can produce a quality product with lots of flavor absolutely gets my positive vote and that is the Mercantile or the Merc. Love those raspberry almond muffins. And the girls behind the counter that pick up the phone and put my order together this summer we're awesome!! Props to them. They understand customer service. Hidden gem! Walking up it's not unusual to see a dog just lying around enjoying the day on the porch. Inside it's not unusual to see a bunch of locals sitting around the huge dinning room table talking about books, politics, sports, other Cape Cod happenings. Coffee - excellent self serve. Muffins - tons of 'em Sandwiches - yummy made to order. Fish cakes, maybe not everyday but they should be - some of the best! Look for their daily lunch specials. This great little sandwich shop and bakery is probably the best "let's get something to take to the beach" place in Dennis and maybe on the Cape. Tucked off of scenic Rt 6A, it's within a 5 minute drive (20 minute walk you lazy nut) from some of the best Cape beaches around and next door to a lovely little art gallery. It's Cape Cod at it's best. I've been going here for years and I usually get the same thing. A cup of good chowder (maybe not the best from the shores but it's perty darn tasty) and a sandwich (roast beef, swiss, sprouts on fresh baked anadama bread). Sometimes chips and a drink too. From what I've seen and heard from others who go there is the rest of the food and sandwiches are beyond amazing. The baked goods have always called to me but I've never answered. I save room for the occasional second sandwich to stuff me at the beach. It's worth it. Fresh ingredients, friendly young staff, great location and the perfect spot for that afternoon snack between beaches. They have multiple employees for a small establishment which should mean fast fast service, unfortunately this is not the case. It takes 30 minutes to get a cold cut sandwich when they are slow. Just went there for lunch today, it was so good! Lots of sandwich options plus some fresh made soups and entrees. I had a lentil patty on roasted butternut squash with a parsley sauce. Inventive meal, cheap for what it was, very tasty, and looked nice on the plate. The butternut squash and caramalised onion Mac and cheese sounded really good too. I appreciate the well thought out veggie options! Especially in what was a quick sandwich café type place. On a recent trip to Cape we decided to stop here for breakfast to go. My husband had a blueberry muffin that was the best he'd ever had. "It had a ton of blueberries!" I had bacon to go (keto diet!) and coffee. This place is adorable. The upstairs has beautiful art work displayed. There were also little kids playing up there. Cafe is open early AM to Mid-afternoon and is a great place to grab some beach food to go or go up stairs to enjoy gallery up stairs that features local cape artists. I used to love this place, but it seems to have gone downhill. My sandwich cost about $2 than it really should, and the service was weak (and exceptionally slow). In addition to the high prices, I was overcharged. Also, I don't understand how a sandwich store can run out of sourdough every single day. I would expect that they would realize its popularity and adjust their supply levels. Although the old building retains some of its charm, I was overall very disappointed with my experience.
