Merb's has fantastic chocolate... milk and dark... triangle-shaped break-apart and also pecan clusters, non pareils and more. And chocolate marshmallows and eggs for Easter. They have their own flavor that is similar to other dark chocolates but so nice and creamy... thankfully you may be challenged with determine - crunch it or let it melt in your mouth... or have two triangles and enjoy it both ways! Merb's is home of the bionic apple and also makes licorice and other non-chocolate candies; chocolate-covered strawberries at the right time of year. Thank you Merb's for providing one of the joys of life - chocolate! read more

Each holiday season, I receive approximately one dozen work-related gifts, small tokens of appreciation for another good year of working together. As the calendar page turned to December, I realized how much I was looking forward to a box of "snappers" from Merb's. This is unusual, because candy usually isn't the first thing I think of eating at the holidays, or any time of year. For the uninitiated, Merb's snappers look like the candy often called "turtles" by other confectioners. From my perspective, they seem both lighter and "meatier" (can you say that about the nut in a candy?). Turtles sometimes are a hunk of sweet gunk that stick to my teeth. But snappers seem more like an elegant dessert, especially the dark chocolate version. I'm not describing snappers very well. But I think you get the point that in the category of "candy," I hold snappers in high regard. My experience inside the shop was tops. Parked on the side street, was buzzed in, served immediately, all questions answered. My boxes of snappers were prepared, a mix of dark and milk chocolate (gifts to spread the Merb's love), and I purchased a bag of dark-chocolate almonds for the road. Thanks Merb's, your snappers are the best. read more

Been buying chocolate caramel marshmallow eggs for 50 years.....this year, 2026, have to ask where's the caramel???? Tariffs or something caused cutting back the caramel! If they weren't so far away from this 78 year old lady, I would return the 18 eggs that's left. Very disappointed! read more

This place is legendary. And I'll just say WHY for me...chocolate covered strawberries and bionic apples. Customer service in person and by phone (i used to order bionic apples almost annually when i lived in Atlanta) is a 10/10. And efficient and professional. I'm a firm believer that the quality of their products live up to the pricing. read more

First time ever putting a negative review on yelp. I actually only about a hand full of times gone off on a vendor. Hard to call because they leave the fax on. I sent something from merbs to my friend in Asheville, NC because she had lost someone and because of Helene issues. She didn't receive the product. Tried to get resolution from FedEx online and got a picture saying that this was a SmartPost shipment. The person sending needed to contact FedEx. Merbs said since FedEx had a picture of the box at the house, they were no longer involved and that I was now responsible with dealing with FedEx. My friend sent me pictures of how the package had been opened and no candy was inside. Someone tucked it back up on the sides where they had cut it and slipped it out. Who steals candy? I tried to send emails but they were bounced back after two days. The lady at Merbs wouldn't give me a manager, said they never have issues with shipping and just hung up on me because she had to get back to work. The shipping was $19.95 for a pound of chocolate. A pound of chocolate was $35 dollars, I paid the $ because I thought I was working with a quality company. So sad Merbs. I gave two stars because I didn't have issues with the s. County store, all shipments are done from the Grand store. Merbs says call FedEx and FedEx says call Merbs. At my old house, I saw people take a picture and then start to leave with the box, there I just opened the door and followed them down the sidewalk to retrieve the box. BS. Update: filed a complaint from FedEx and they said Merbs had to make the complaint. They filed my complaint, but that had no actionable consequence because I did not ship, Merbs did. Called Merb again. This time I was more cooler, less volume, but my voice was high pitch because I hate confrontation. The lady I spoke to said she was the owner. Owner said I was being rude and will not contact FedEx. She said she could tell from the drivers pic, (pic included), that there was candy in that box. The box was open on the other side. Even though I said it was on FedEx and stuck to the facts, the owner is blocking any resolution from FedEx. The owner implied my friend or I was lying. My friend or I do need to scam a box of candy from Merbs. read more

The chocolate covered strawberries were perfection! Walked in a few days before Valentine's day and received great service. They are only allowing 4 customers inside the store at a time, so there was a small line outside the front door (as to be expected before Valentine's Day). Other days when I have driven past, there is no line. There was a uniformed officer inside the store on the day of my visit. I don't necessarily thing he was needed, but he did add an extra sense of security on s busy day. There is only street parking available on Grand and the side street, no parking lot. Keep in mind there is a bus stop at this corner and to avoid parking in the bus stop. Check their website for current offerings. You may want to call ahead if you want to make sure they have what you are looking for. I was interested in their caramel sauce, but when I arrived, they only had their caramel sauce with nuts on top. Obviously, still delicious. The caramel wasn't actually a sauce, but more like taffy. I needed to cut it with scissors or pull really heard to get it our of the container. No spoons! The cashier was wearing a face shield and she was behind plexi at the register. I felt safe with their social distancing and masking protocols. read more

I went to buy some chocolate covered strawberries for Valentine's Day this evening. I called beforehand and they told me I could buy them by half a pound, but when I came in, they insisted that I buy a full pound only and when I asked, the lady was very rude. I was disappointed because the candies themselves are not even pretty and and do not have any drizzled icing on the top. Very disappointed, rude experience I would not recommend.! read more

The absolute best candy store in st, Louis, And their caramel apples are incredible and second to none

Merb's was right on time for today's dark chocolate fix! Conveniently and awkwardly located on the corner of S. Grand and Osage you'll miss it if you don't do a slow roll. Most known for their delicious chocolate covered strawberries and gigantic caramel apples; Merb's also has a plethora of milk and dark chocolate bark, truffles, snappers, clusters, puffs, crisps and solids to choose from. They also stock rock candy, Twizzlers, taffy, tootsie rolls, push pops, Now & Later's and more. The girls working the counter were friendly and very helpful. The inside is well organized, clean and inviting. I left a happy camper with my dark chocolate pecan bark, a dark chocolate pineapple cream and a dark chocolate lemon cream. I'll be back! read more

The Chocolate Alone Is Amazing And Then They Add The Caramel And Pecans, Almonds And Cashews That Takes It To The Next Level!!

Worst customer service! Ordered bionic apples, they arrived damaged and one of the apples did not even have a stick in it. Called the owner who said her name was Taylor and she basically called me a liar because Merbs would never send an apple without a stick and that Fedex must've did the damage. Did not offer store credit or to replace them. I even offered to send pictures but the owner did not care. Again the worst customer service ever!!!! read more

I bought my first (and probably only) Bionic apple at Dierbergs yesterday. I am very sad that my $9 apple has nuts that are not fresh (have that sharp, old taste) and the apple had a bad spot that had to be cut off. Caramel was amazing as usual, but like everything else these days, seemed to be less as in the past. I'm very sad. read more

Got here an hour after Google and the door said was their opening time and no one was here. Called the store and the voicemail box was full.

We stopped by on Saturday, July 24. We want to sing the praises of the wonderful young lady working behind the counter. Our last three visits (during the past 12 months) have wowed us with fabulous service. Her attitude was absolutely fantastic as was her work ethic and organization. Saddened to see reviews about poor customer service on this site. They do seem to stem from 2018 so perhaps those individuals have moved on. The candy was delicious as always. The lady behind the counter did inform us that cream candies are not made during the summer months, which is understandable. That was a wee bit disappointing, but we just doubled up on the caramels to get our chocolate fix. I noticed a mint patty and after the young lady had boxed up all of our chocolates I asked her if it would be too much trouble to add a mint. I had never seen mints at the store before (and I have been going there for years). She explained that it was a new product and she was more than willing to add it to our order. (Fabulous attitude.) The mint was delicious and will be added to our orders in the future. The one "knock" on Merb's Candies doesn't affect the rating at all...it's just that we would love to see them market themselves more. They have two great shops, they have an excellent product, but they don't seem to advertise or use social media to the fullest extent possible. On the other hand, maybe they are comfortable in their niche. It's their business. Stop by. Say hello to the lovely workers and buy some candy. Don't forget to stop by again in the fall for the iconic, bionic apples. read more

Try the chocolate covered strawberries! They're the best! Everything I've tried is great. Can't go wrong.

I love Merbs! If you've never tried a Bionic Apple, I'm sorry and I pity you. Did you not see the billboard they had on Hwy 44 this year?? The Bionic Apple is--in a word--perfection. They start with an apple, but this is not any ordinary apple. It is the biggest, tartest, crispest (that is apparently a word, go figure) Granny Smith that I've ever had. They get their apples special. From where? Some orchard of the gods. Then on top of the apple, there is the creamiest caramel and crunchy nuts. The combination of tart, crisp apple and creamy, sweet caramel is worth every penny of the $5 they cost. They also sell them without nuts, and they sell tubs of the caramel, which are very, very tempting though I've never bought one. The only way to successfully eat a Bionic Apple is to buy multiple, because if anyone sees you with them, you will be forced to share. Also, my family and I have been buying Bionic Apples for years, and we'd never had a bad one until this year. This year we bought 6, but the apples were bad. My sister brought her 3 back and explained. They immediately gave her 6 new ones that were fresh and perfect. They were very nice. I love Merbs! Edit: Apologies to those of you, whose taste buds I teased, but Bionic Apples are unfortunately only available in the Fall. read more

Lesson learned - no gift compares to a couple bionic apples and/or box of chocolate covered strawberries. I've given them out a few times as random gifts - engagement parties, housewarmings (pretty much any event where everyone else is bringing wine) and they've always been a big hit. Highly recommend the Grand store - they are quick and friendly, and you get to see the iconic 'Merb's Candies' painting on the south side of the building. #ShopLocal read more

Did you know that they have a huge conveyor belt in the back that enrobes your goodies in luscious milk chocolate? Did you know that the dark chocolate enrober is upstairs? Neither did I until I attended the monthly Downtown Dutchtown (DT2) event in my neighborhood. I got to send some strawberries and Oreos down the belt, and sample some of Merb's finest chocolates. Valentine's Day is right around the corner (like you need a reason for some chocolately goodness.) Stop in and grab a heart-shaped box. Or some molasses puffs. Or some S'mores. I already did! read more

What a charming little shop filled with delicious treats that I wish I could afford to eat every single day! A lack of funds and a potential pants size (or five) increase deters me from visiting more often. The bionic apple is the best caramel apple I have ever had in my life. They also have chocolate and old school candies there. I picked up some root beer hard candy, laffy taffy and Mary Jane (the candy! what kind of place do you think this is?) while I was at it. Prices are a bit steep, but it's a specialty shop, so that's expected. read more

I am sooo disappointed! I bought several Merb's caramel apples at Straub's in Clayton fully anticipating the wonderful creamy sweetness of past years. The caramel tasted quite different than usual. It was a much thinner coating, The buttery/creamy taste was absent. The pecans were fewer and the overall taste lacked the sweetness and richness it usually has. Merb's, I know times are tough, but being cheap with the ingredients means that those of us who have been buying your apples for over 40 years will leave for Bobby's Caramel Apples! Reverse course and raise the price to pay for the ingredients! read more

I LOVE Merb's bionic caramel apples. They are a staple of Fall and NO caramel apple compares. I always have bought them at Straub's. In the past, you were able to buy caramel apples with no nuts there, but they haven't sold them plain for a few years. So I recruited my candy lovin' sister to go with me to check out the plain caramel apple situation at the true Merb's store. We walked into a candy wonderland! This is THE candy store if you want original candies, not just the prepackaged stuff at a place like O Lolli Lolli. They make all their candy and they have so many treats, from chocolates to fudge, gummies, eyeball gum and many seasonal favorites. And PLAIN CARAMEL APPLES!!! I got a few and asked why they stopped selling them at Straub's. I don't mind the nuts but I like the plain better. Apparently it takes much longer for the plain ones because they have to dip them more times and let them dry more. Huh. Ok. In any case, this is now my go to candy place. LOVE!!! And keep them bionic apples coming! read more

Merb's is adequate for a local chocolatier place, but for other candies (e.g., jelly beans, sours, spice gum drops) look elsewhere because it tends to get pricey. these candies (not chocolate) are already pre-packaged, so you have to buy what is already sitting on the shelf rather than those candy shops that provide for self-serve service. i did order a half box of chocolates as a gift and the staff was able to assemble one in no time, since there weren't any already packaged. the chocolates behind the counter looked quite desirable and yummy, so i must come back to taste some of them. other than that one experience of getting last minute candy for gingerbread cutouts, i can be influenced to return to try out the chocolate. previous yelpers seem to heart the bionic apples and chocolates, so i must assume a second visit is due. read more

The bionic apples are super delicious. Picked up one the other day and am still thinking about the caramel!!! Shop local, shop Merb's!

We came here to get some strawberries on Valentine's Day and obviously it was Valentine's Day but it was also not very busy and it was a really weird experience. We got the chocolate covered strawberries but you had to buy a large box of them and you couldn't buy them in smaller amounts but it seemed like nobody wanted to be there and we were really put off by the service. They have a cop in there and he just looms over you the whole time you're there. The lady working there was very crabby and unfriendly she was very insistent on a weird rule that we had to buy at least a quarter pound of anything you couldn't mix or match many things and it was just super unfriendly and a really frustrating shopping experience. We certainly didn't feel welcome at all. The candy was good but maybe get some people in there that don't hate their jobs. You would think they would want to make the process fun and welcoming and that it would be a destination. I don't know what has gone wrong there but obviously the neighborhood is not the best and maybe that makes them all hate their jobs. The candy was amazing though. read more

Their molasses candies are good, weird and chewy. The crunchy ones are almost chalky, like a harder meringue. Fall - Bionic Apples, the heck with beautiful color leaves, pumpkins, etc., try a Merb's Bionic Apple and this too will become your favorite part of the fall season. So good, I also give them as gifts. The combination of the large tart apple, soft carmel and pecans - too good to miss. So big, you almost have to share....or maybe not! Valentine's Day - Chocolate Covered Strawberries, better than all the rest! Easter - Marshmallow Eggs, warning try them once and these too will become a yearly addiction. My favorite, the dark chocolate, carmel marshmallow eggs. The same soft carmel of the apples tops a delicious marshmallow, both covered in the best chocolate. Also in milk chocolate, or without the carmel - all wonderful! I enjoy giving Bionic Apples and Marshmallow Eggs as gifts to clients and vendors, a unique gift, everyone will enjoy & Christmas can be a little over done. read more

We were hoping to do some pretty extensive Christmas shopping at Merb's and get some treats for our kiddos. When we pulled up at the store this morning, the neon "open" sign was on as well as all of the other window signage. It was a few minutes before nine, but the door was unlocked so we went in. The girl who was working clearly was NOT happy to see us, and grumbled a response about being open 9-3 and then walked away and ignored us. We'll take our money somewhere else. A couple of tips for the brat who opened the store this morning--#1: Adjust your attitude. #2: If you're going to work in customer service, be kind to your customers. #3: You represented your whole city today. Not impressed. #4: If you're not open, don't turn the OPEN sign on. Don't unlock the door. read more

Merbs Candies is great! It's in a totally sketchy area so watch your back! You have to be buzzed in. The candies I ordered were fine. The environment in which I placed the order, specifically 3958 S Grand Blvd was not. The person working in the back of the store was banking and slamming utensils while I was attempting to decide what to order and continued to get louder. Bought a box of chocolate covered strawberries for Valentine's Day on Thursday the 12th. Kept them in the fridge and delivered them Saturday morning. When I took them out of the bag, they had leaked all over. Undaunted, I took a bite - rotten, soggy, awful strawberries. I tried another, the same. Oh well, stuff happens right? I called them, explained the situation and figured I'd get a refund or exchange. Nope! How about a 'voucher' for half-off another box. Are you kidding me? 30 bucks a box, 12 rotten strawberries that probably sat on the shelf all week before being sold, a worthless Valentine's gift and you don't even offer an exchange?
