Each holiday season, I receive approximately one dozen work-related gifts, small tokens of appreciation for another good year of working together. As the calendar page turned to December, I realized how much I was looking forward to a box of "snappers" from Merb's. This is unusual, because candy usually isn't the first thing I think of eating at the holidays, or any time of year. For the uninitiated, Merb's snappers look like the candy often called "turtles" by other confectioners. From my perspective, they seem both lighter and "meatier" (can you say that about the nut in a candy?). Turtles sometimes are a hunk of sweet gunk that stick to my teeth. But snappers seem more like an elegant dessert, especially the dark chocolate version. I'm not describing snappers very well. But I think you get the point that in the category of "candy," I hold snappers in high regard. My experience inside the shop was tops. Parked on the side street, was buzzed in, served immediately, all questions answered. First time ever putting a negative review on yelp. I actually only about a hand full of times gone off on a vendor. Hard to call because they leave the fax on. I sent something from merbs to my friend in Asheville, NC because she had lost someone and because of Helene issues. She didn't receive the product. Tried to get resolution from FedEx online and got a picture saying that this was a SmartPost shipment. The person sending needed to contact FedEx. Merbs said since FedEx had a picture of the box at the house, they were no longer involved and that I was now responsible with dealing with FedEx. My friend sent me pictures of how the package had been opened and no candy was inside. Someone tucked it back up on the sides where they had cut it and slipped it out. Who steals candy? I tried to send emails but they were bounced back after two days. The lady at Merbs wouldn't give me a manager, said they never have issues with shipping and just hung up on me because she had to get back to work. The shipping was $19.95 for a pound of chocolate. A pound of chocolate was $35 dollars, I paid the $ because I thought I was working with a quality company. So sad Merbs. I gave two stars because I didn't have issues with the s. County store, all shipments are done from the Grand store. Merbs says call FedEx and FedEx says call Merbs. At my old house, I saw people take a picture and then start to leave with the box, there I just opened the door and followed them down the sidewalk to retrieve the box. BS. Update: filed a complaint from FedEx and they said Merbs had to make the complaint. They filed my complaint, but that had no actionable consequence because I did not ship, Merbs did. Called Merb again. This time I was more cooler, less volume, but my voice was high pitch because I hate confrontation. The lady I spoke to said she was the owner. Owner said I was being rude and will not contact FedEx. She said she could tell from the drivers pic, (pic included), that there was candy in that box. The box was open on the other side. Even though I said it was on FedEx and stuck to the facts, the owner is blocking any resolution from FedEx. The owner implied my friend or I was lying. The chocolate covered strawberries were perfection! Walked in a few days before Valentine's day and received great service. They are only allowing 4 customers inside the store at a time, so there was a small line outside the front door (as to be expected before Valentine's Day). Other days when I have driven past, there is no line. There was a uniformed officer inside the store on the day of my visit. I don't necessarily thing he was needed, but he did add an extra sense of security on s busy day. There is only street parking available on Grand and the side street, no parking lot. Keep in mind there is a bus stop at this corner and to avoid parking in the bus stop. Check their website for current offerings. You may want to call ahead if you want to make sure they have what you are looking for. I was interested in their caramel sauce, but when I arrived, they only had their caramel sauce with nuts on top. Obviously, still delicious. The caramel wasn't actually a sauce, but more like taffy. I needed to cut it with scissors or pull really heard to get it our of the container. No spoons! The cashier was wearing a face shield and she was behind plexi at the register. I bought my first (and probably only) Bionic apple at Dierbergs yesterday. I am very sad that my $9 apple has nuts that are not fresh (have that sharp,old taste) and the apple had a bad spot that had to be cut off. We stopped by on Saturday, July 24. We want to sing the praises of the wonderful young lady working behind the counter. Our last three visits (during the past 12 months) have wowed us with fabulous service. Her attitude was absolutely fantastic as was her work ethic and organization. Saddened to see reviews about poor customer service on this site. They do seem to stem from 2018 so perhaps those individuals have moved on. The candy was delicious as always. The lady behind the counter did inform us that cream candies are not made during the summer months, which is understandable. That was a wee bit disappointing, but we just doubled up on the caramels to get our chocolate fix. I noticed a mint patty and after the young lady had boxed up all of our chocolates I asked her if it would be too much trouble to add a mint. I had never seen mints at the store before (and I have been going there for years). She explained that it was a new product and she was more than willing to add it to our order. (Fabulous attitude.) The mint was delicious and will be added to our orders in the future. The one "knock" on Merb's Candies doesn't affect the rating at all...it's just that we would love to see them market themselves more. They have two great shops, they have an excellent product, but they don't seem to advertise or use social media to the fullest extent possible. On the other hand, maybe they are comfortable in their niche. It's their business. Stop by. Say hello to the lovely workers and buy some candy. I am sooo disappointed! I bought several Merb's caramel apples at Straub's in Clayton fully anticipating the wonderful creamy sweetness of past years. The caramel tasted quite different than usual. It was a much thinner coating, The buttery/creamy taste was absent. The pecans were fewer and the overall taste lacked the sweetness and richness it usually has. Merb's, I know times are tough, but being cheap with the ingredients means that those of us who have been buying your apples for over 40 years will leave for Bobby's Caramel Apples! I love Merbs! If you've never tried a Bionic Apple, I'm sorry and I pity you. Did you not see the billboard they had on Hwy 44 this year?? The Bionic Apple is--in a word--perfection. They start with an apple, but this is not any ordinary apple. It is the biggest, tartest, crispest (that is apparently a word, go figure) Granny Smith that I've ever had. They get their apples special. From where? Some orchard of the gods. Then on top of the apple, there is the creamiest caramel and crunchy nuts. The combination of tart, crisp apple and creamy, sweet caramel is worth every penny of the $5 they cost. They also sell them without nuts, and they sell tubs of the caramel, which are very, very tempting though I've never bought one. The only way to successfully eat a Bionic Apple is to buy multiple, because if anyone sees you with them, you will be forced to share. Also, my family and I have been buying Bionic Apples for years, and we'd never had a bad one until this year. This year we bought 6, but the apples were bad. My sister brought her 3 back and explained. They immediately gave her 6 new ones that were fresh and perfect. They were very nice. I love Merbs! In the past, you were able to buy caramel apples with no nuts there, but they haven't sold them plain for a few years. So I recruited my candy lovin' sister to go with me to check out the plain caramel apple situation at the true Merb's store. We walked into a candy wonderland! This is THE candy store if you want original candies, not just the prepackaged stuff at a place like O Lolli Lolli. They make all their candy and they have so many treats, from chocolates to fudge, gummies, eyeball gum and many seasonal favorites. And PLAIN CARAMEL APPLES!!! I got a few and asked why they stopped selling them at Straub's. I don't mind the nuts but I like the plain better. Apparently it takes much longer for the plain ones because they have to dip them more times and let them dry more. Huh. Ok. In any case, this is now my go to candy place. LOVE!!! Merb's is adequate for a local chocolatier place, but for other candies (e.g., jelly beans, sours, spice gum drops) look elsewhere because it tends to get pricey. these candies (not chocolate) are already pre-packaged, so you have to buy what is already sitting on the shelf rather than those candy shops that provide for self-serve service. i did order a half box of chocolates as a gift and the staff was able to assemble one in no time, since there weren't any already packaged. the chocolates behind the counter looked quite desirable and yummy, so i must come back to taste some of them. other than that one experience of getting last minute candy for gingerbread cutouts, i can be influenced to return to try out the chocolate. previous yelpers seem to heart the bionic apples and chocolates, so i must assume a second visit is due. read more

We came here to get some strawberries on Valentine's Day and obviously it was Valentine's Day but it was also not very busy and it was a really weird experience. We got the chocolate covered strawberries but you had to buy a large box of them and you couldn't buy them in smaller amounts but it seemed like nobody wanted to be there and we were really put off by the service. They have a cop in there and he just looms over you the whole time you're there. The lady working there was very crabby and unfriendly she was very insistent on a weird rule that we had to buy at least a quarter pound of anything you couldn't mix or match many things and it was just super unfriendly and a really frustrating shopping experience. We certainly didn't feel welcome at all. The candy was good but maybe get some people in there that don't hate their jobs. You would think they would want to make the process fun and welcoming and that it would be a destination. Their molasses candies are good, weird and chewy. The crunchy ones are almost chalky, like a harder meringue. However the inside of the store is kind of disappointing because the place looks like it will be a cute old fashioned candy shop but it's just basic and looks like a chain store would. read more

The person working in the back of the store was banking and slamming utensils while I was attempting to decide what to order and continued to get louder.
