Above average taqueria in a city ubiquitous with good TexMex fare. I stopped by Mendez cafe after an earlyish Sat morning run. I got there around 8:45--by 9:30, when I left, it was standing room only. The restaurant is small with around 15-20 tabletops max. Lesson: if you're gonna go, it might be best to go during off hours to avoid the line. It's down the street from Port SA or whatever the hell the old Kelly AFB is now. I had their huevos rancheros. Nothing fancy but it's my go to dish at a new restaurant. Hard to mess it up but, I think, offers a glimpse into the restaurant's potential. The eggs were cooked superbly. I asked for over medium--I received light, fluffy eggs w/ a gooey yolk. Just as I like. The ranchera sauce was the star, however. It wasn't just good, it was *really* tasty. The potatoes were cooked well. Soft with a hint of a crispy outside shell. I only wish they would drizzle some of that fantastic ranchera sauce onto the potatoes--I'm not a fan of eating plain, dryish, albeit well-cooked, potatoes for breakfast. I like sauce covering them! But that's just my preference. I only tasted the refried beans--they are what one would expect. The tortillas were good. They tasted fresh and are homemade which is a plus. Oddly enough I thought the coffee was pretty damn good for a taqueria. It's not craft coffee or whatever but it tasted great. Service was a bit slow. To be fair, when I got there the server was friendly (as was everyone I interacted with including a few patrons) & attentive but it just became really busy so I waited awhile for both coffee refills and my meal. Not a huge deal, but noticeable. All in all, a pleasant experience. I'd certainly go back if I was in the area and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Mendez Cafe to anyone looking for TexMex on Yelp. ProTip: Bring cash, they don't do debit cards.

These were probably the best tacos with flour tortillas I ever had. I went with a Carne Guisada with Cheese Taco and the Bean and Cheese Taco. Loved how the tortillas were warm and fresh. The Guisada was flavorful and had the right level of spicy, which I loved. The beef was also cooked perfect, fork tender, easy to chew. One of the best tacos I ever had. How many places can you go where you get filled up on a couple of tacos and soda and come in at under $6 (before tip)? If in the area, I highly recommend. Get there in the morning as they close at like 1pm and double check they are open as they will sometimes randomly close.

My parents brought me here for breakfast. I ordered a bean and cheese along with a carne guisada taco. I enjoyed the bean and cheese but the guisada taco had a lot of gristle. My dad had the pork chops and I was disappointed with the size. The were about a quarter inch thick and looked like jerky. My dad wasn't satisfied with his meal this day.

Lunch was good. I ordered 3 tacos, carne guisada with cheese, picadillo and potato and egg and bacon. I think the potato and egg with bacon was the best, I just wish I had told the waiter I wanted it all mixed in the egg, but it was still good. The star of the tacos was the flour tortilla, hands down, probably some of the best tortillas ive ever eaten (and I've eaten a lot of flour tortillas in my life!)! They were soft and chewy, had a nice Comal charr to them. Very good! If I lived or worked in the area I'd order breakfast tacos from them all the time. If you get a chance, stop by and grab some good food. Cash only though.

Best cheese enchiladas in the city. Huevos Rancheros are always delicious. Been coming here since I was a kid and now we bring our own kids.

Service is fast, place is decently clean for the foot traffic, the servers all look happy and eager to work. I ordered tortilla soup, I usually like it with a cup of rice and avocado like most places serve it. However, I definitely think this is a safe Mexican food restaurant when it comes to not overdoing it with spices and the extra stuff. My soup had a decent amount of chicken. I had a mimosa, loved that they used fresh orange juice. Flour tortillas were delicious! Before heading out you need to have the sweet bread!! So goooodd!

People say when in San Antonio, do like the San Antonian's. Nobody really says that. I mean, I just…read moredid, but I also just made it up. With that being said, let's make up a review. Except I'm not actually making the review up, I've been to the place. Both San Antonio and the restaurant moments away from being reviewed. I'm always down for solid Mexican food. It's always pretty damn good. I mean, at the pure base of things, it's basically the same few ingredients, just different vessels to get it to your mouth. I'm never bad about that. I love transportation. Mi Tierra was a pretty great looking place. Plenty of space, a nice outside waiting area, plus a bakery. I have never been to a place with a bakery that I didn't like. It seemed like a very authentic place, and that's coming from a resident of Michigan. A resident that eats Taco Bell. A resident who eats Taco Bell and think's THAT'S authentic Mexican. The first thing I noticed was that this place did not seem to serve burritos. Not a marker really for me, but it was something I've never came across before. I also thought that you were stuck ordering enchiladas or tacos in a meal type of setting. Upon further questioning, you can order a la cart. That was a relief. I ended up ordering the enchiladas Verdes because sometimes I ignore my color palate and go for green. And because I can't just stop eating one form of meat, cheese, and sauce, I ordered a taco. Actually, I just ordered a taco because I wanted a dryer enchilada. Or did I order the enchiladas because I wanted a wetter taco...I don't know anymore. Anywho, I ground beef, American style taco. Now, I've always been a big fan of chips and salsa. Some salsa hits, some miss. Some salsa is pureed and is basically red water. Some salsa is just a full tomato. I like my salsa like I like my orange juice. With extra calcium. Wait. Mild pulp. That's it. This salsa pretty much hit those notes. Had good flavor and a little spice left to linger. The main course came out and everything looked delicious. Green enchiladas looked exactly like I expected. However, it took me a moment to realize I was not looking at a burrito...but instead, my taco. It was served a peculiar way. wrapped, seam down, with a little bit of the meat on top, pico and lettuce on the outside, next to it. It was a burrito peacocking as a taco. I've never seem this display before, and I have been to many Taco Bell and non-Taco Bell restaurants. The taste was pretty good, though. All the taco flavor in a burrito jacket. The enchiladas were pretty decent, too. Everything tasted like it had all the ingredients and that they were in all the right spots. No doubt about it, I was full after e

It was delicious! The concha was soft, buttery and flaky, with just the right sweetness. We took home the majority of it and it stayed nice and soft instead of turning hard like so many others. We decided to try several appetizers to go along with our concha to get a wider taste of their food than we would by just ordering a couple entrees. Let me tell you, this was a great idea! We ordered the Tosti-Ceviche Verde, Panela Asado, Mexican Street Corn, and their Spicy Bean Dip. The Ceviche Verde was excellent, the freshness of the fish and shrimp was wonderful with the chipotle mayo and avocado. We chose to have it on the salsa Verde Tostitos and it was all great combination. The Panelo Asado was a completely new dish for us and was extremely good with a savory flavor from the salsa Tlaquepaque that mixed well with the Panela cheese. Their tortillas though not made in house, are made for them and taste like mom made them. The Mexican Street Corn was great and had the perfect bit of char taste from the corn. It was creamy and flavorful, we did think it could use just a tad more lime juice though. The Spicy Bean Dip was very good. You can't go wrong with Oaxaca, Chorizo, and pieces of pork mixed with some mildly spicy beans. Our server was fantastic. She had great recommendations for us, and was quick with checking on our drinks and generally helping us throughout our dinner. The food was prepared quickly, was hot, tasteful and refreshing. We definitely will be going back, and recommend Pan Fila to all of you.
