I wanted to get tiles for the backslash project we were doing and went to 5 stores looking and ended up back at menards. They did not have enough tiles that matched, so the floor help said we could just order 40 new pieces that would all be the same dye lot. So we ordered them and then they told us before we arrived home that are ordered had arrived already. But come to find out it was the tile we looked at that did not match. What a joke. The customer service here is abysmal! You can walk down the aisles and see employees chatting with each other, not bothering to ask if you need help. I was standing in the lighting department next to two employees chatting, and neither one of them bothered to ask if I needed help. I may as well go to Walmart if I want to be ignored. Today I was there browsing and was shocked to have a young man come up to me and ask if I needed help! That never happens here. Home Depot's employees will stop and ask if they can help, even if they are on their way to another department! Customer service is everything! read more

My wife and I have been using this Peoria, IL store for probably 20 years. It used to be really good and well staffed, but over the past 10 years their customer service has been declining and recently has taken a big decline. Most bad experiences have been minor, where it was just obvious that the employees didn't care about whether they were helpful or friendly. It appears this store has had a lot of turnover and there are not really any familiar faces and those that are familiar look stressed and unhappy. Anyhow, today was the final straw for my wife and me. I had re-entered the store from the outdoor garden center after picking up a couple bags of gravel when I was confronted by an employee who demanded I put on a face mask. I actually apologized for that and told him I had forgotten I had taken it off when I went out and I did promptly put on the mask as he demanded. The man stood there glaring at me and so I mentioned to him that he was quite a good "mask policeman", at which point you could see he got very angry and he stepped towards us and asked if we were "going to have a problem". I replied to him I didn't know what he meant by that, but maybe it would be a good time for him to go get his manager. He replied he was the manager... So instead of arguing any further I told him to leave us alone and then my wife and I turned to continue shopping. He then got very angry shouting at us "are you disrespecting me" and I again asked him to go away and I could tell my wife was getting scared. He kept following us repeating his question several times about "disrespecting him" and finally he turned and stormed off. My wife was upset and asked me to leave the store right away with her since she was afraid of this guy. We left a cart full of items in the aisle and we do not plan on returning to the store ever again. I'm still trying to find out if in fact this guy was the store manager or not, as I want to file a complaint and I want to send it to the appropriate level above him so it doesn't get lost or ignored. read more

I looked all over the store for an ice scraper and a shovel. Being that I'm from Florida, I didn't really come to Illinois prepared. Anyway, 3 employees walked past me without even making eye contact.So I continued looking around but still, no luck. I asked someone up front where these items could be and they told me to ask someone on the floor. Fair enough. Every cloud has a silver lining, an employee by the name of David M. not only told me where these items were, but also walked me there. Btw, he is the ONLY reason why this place deserves 3 stars. I asked him for advice on what else a Florida boy would need in 7 degree weather. He spent a good 10 minutes helping me find everything I needed. Thank you, David! If you're coming from somewhere warm, then you've probably never really had to experience the icy roads/snowy winters like here. This is just like any other home improvement store. Well, except the lack of enthusiasm here is strong. Seems like no one wants to help. (I got here at 7:20, they close at 8) Hopefully you will have better luck than I did with the service. I hope it's possible to finish this review leaving it with 0 stars because that is truly what this Menards store deserves. I have never had such poor customer service somewhere EVERY time I walk into a store. I once attended this store with my dad to order windows ....the customer service person was so rude to us and basically told us WE'D have to find someone else to help us. More recently, I attended this store to get a new blind. We needed the blind cut so we got someone to cut it for us. Besides having no friendly skills he questioned everything we were asking making us feel stupid. It's not the first time I've hung or bought a blind so just do what I asked of you. My mom was in search of some putty to hold her gazing ball in addition to me getting the blind. We had 3 high school/college age kids standing around looking at us like we were stupid for asking for that. They had no clue what we were talking about....and you work in the garden center?! Then when we rounded the corner you had the audacity to look back at us and laugh like we were crazy?! Sorry Menards, I won't be returning to this location. You need some serious help with people skills and product knowledge. read more

It's a home improvement store....what can I say. Plenty of stuff, decent prices, the people were fine, though a little improvement in customer service might help improve their sales. Nothing specific, just more of a lack of enthusiasum among the couple of employees I encountered. Otherwise, the delivery prices were cheaper than a couple other places in town, plus the trucks you can rent from them are generally an even cheaper option than delivery. read more

Let me tell you about my terrible experience with Menards the past two days. First, I do research online for a lawnmower that I would like to purchase. There is only one left in stock in my area about 20 minutes away. I drive to purchase this lawnmower and it is nowhere to be found in the store. Essentially, Menards lost the inventory or sold it under the wrong sku. I then settle for purchasing a similar model, take it home, put it together, and it will not start. I had three other people look at the mower and none of us could get it to start. The next morning, I take apart the lawnmower to return and squeeze it into my car. I then carry it in to return in three loads. Not one person asked me if I needed help, but I was approached for not wearing a face mask and told I could purchase one or leave. The state mandate for facemasks being worn in public had not taken affect, which I made sure to vocalize to the employee and she allowed me to return my item. I wait in line, and when it is my turn the same employee that watched me make three trips to my car to carry in this lawnmower told me that I was not able to return it. She then gave me a paper of two places I could get it serviced. I said "I am not going to pay to get a lawnmower serviced that I just bought yesterday." She made sure to tell me in an unprofessional tone that "I didn't say you had to pay for it." I go to call the number that serviced the mower closest to me and half the number was not readable (which was typed and then scribbled through on every paper) & the address printed was incorrect. I then have to load up this broken mower again, take it to the repair place, fill out a claim, upload my Menards receipt, and hope that they will be able to fix it. I think it is absolutely absurd that I cannot get a refund for something I purchased the day before that doesn't work. Also, that I have to go through the trouble to take it to be repaired. Why would I want something new that needs fixed? read more

While never being a fan of Menards quality of merchandise as well as their refusal to allow people to leave reviews which would benefit potential customers (that's a red flag on its own), I've never liked the gimmicky 11% off when they know that a large percentage of customers will for one reason or another forget to send it in time. However my new financial circumstances find me having to live on just under $20,000 a year and with a passion for providing winter food and water to the wild birds I'm now shopping for their seed at Menards. I try to stock up for the winter ahead of time and last week I went for 2 sacks each of their favorite seeds. When the cashiper was ringing it up I thought she rang up 3 safflower seed and told her you rang up 3 when there is 2 and she vehemently denied it, backtracked for a split second to show me what had been rung up and before I could get close enough to see the screen she reverted to the last items and thinking I must have been mistaken I let it drop. I take it home and unload, put the receipt on my table and went back to check the replacement pickets I purchased. They were too wide so I put them back in the car and grabbed the receipt to put in my purse and when I looked at it I saw that I had indeed been charged for 3 sacks of safflower seed at $21 a sack and that the receipt was missing the rebate stub. Back I go to the customer service desk only to be told she couldn't do anything about the overcharge or missing rebate stub. This has prompted me to now become a shopper who has always irritated me. The ones who no matter how many shoppers in-line they wont clear the isle for the next shopper until they read every charge on the receipt, I now understand why and have become that shopper. So I hope Menards enjoys my $21 donation along with the $17 rebate that I should have had. I'll now be driving 15 minutes longer to buy my seed at Blaine's. read more

I have shopped at Menards for decades and have generally been happy with their employees and service. Yes I once complained to management when employees ignored me as I was loading heavy items into my van, but since then I have discovered I need only ask for help. Not once has a Menards employee refused to help when asked, and when employees don't know the answer they will find someone who does. Seven years ago my wife and I built a house and spent tens of thousands of dollars at Menards. They set us up with a contractor credit card and a representative who was always eager to help us find whatever we needed. He knew us by first first name. Our contractor credit card has been expired for years now, but just the other day our former representative said, "Hi Roger," and asked how we were doing. I had long forgotten his name. read more

This Menards wanted to charge us a 45% restocking fee to return two rugs because we weren't returning them to the same location we purchased from (St. Louis). On top of that, the customer service gal was rude. Are you kidding me??? (Plus...the reason I was returning is that one of the rugs was mis-labeled, so it wasn't even the style I wanted! That's why I was returning them to begin with!) Their is NOTHING on their website or the receipt that says anything about a 45% fee! Grrrrrrr. Used to like those stores. No more! Austin is one great guy! Thoughtful, eager to help and so polite. I've had the distinct pleasure to have had his help on 2 different occasions. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is that one evening I went in when Austin wasn't working and some inept yard worker loaded some crescent shaped edging blocks. Once I get my rebate and use that I won't return to this store. Customer service has always been lacking and Menards layout has always been sub par. I can go to any other hardware store and fairly easily find what I'm looking for but not menards for some reason. Anyway my last encounter with an employee in this store was terrible. Not only was he just standing in an aisle bullshitting with a coworker I was apparently wasted his time asking if he knew where something was. Told me I needed to talk to someone in that department and told him nobody over there. No offer to grab someone for me or maybe take the ambition to help me out just back to his conversation that I apparently interrupted. When I drop a $1000 in a store I better damn well at least be able to get some help without roaming around endlessly. My suggestion to others go to Lowe's or Depot for your large purchases. You may pay a little more but at least you will be treated like a customer and not a nuisance. Wood quality is better at the other stores as well. You won't have to dig all day to get straight wood. read more
