I adopted a beautiful 1 year-old tortoise mom from here, and surprisingly, she was spayed and ready to take home on my first visit! When walking me through the adoption process, the volunteers/staff were really patient, kind, and informative about the background of the pet that I wanted to adopt. The environment was always full of energy and I never felt cramped or interrogated as I felt when going to Mewtopia. Did I also mention that the dogs and cats were incredibly nice and comfortable around others? If you are looking to adopt a furry friend, then you should definitely consider giving this place a try. Omg! This place is so unprofessional and the staff is just plain horrible. I went to adopt a puppy on Saturday . I showed them the one I wanted to adopt. I told them Saturday that it appeared that the paperwork was messed up. The puppy I picked out Saturday was a boy but the paperwork was saying he was a girl. I kept telling them that and they claimed they were going to get the paperwork straighten out but never did. They called me Monday to pick the puppy up and it wasn't the puppy I selected on Saturday. They tried to give a completely different puppy. Then had the nerve to act like I was the problem. These people can't be serious. No, one seemed to care they went on like oh well. No , one showed any empathy for the mix up or anything. It was like they were saying pick another puppy or move on. I will never go there ever again. I was trying to save a puppy life and instead my day was ruined. Now, I am out of $400 on things I bought for the puppy I never got. If, you are trying to adopt a pet from here don't expect much. The Memphis Animal shelter needs a complete overhaul from director on down. The current director couldn't hold his last position in Midland, TX through the probation period before they FIRED him. The council thought he was a good candidate to be in charge? Are you kidding me? They just had a dog die as a result of being left outside in a high summer temps to bake to death. The helpless captive dog died on June 24 while in the care of MAS. Ultimately it is the responsibility of the director, TY COLEMAN, to make sure animals have at least basic care and that includes shade. Anyone that cares about animals knows that. Heck, even most people who do not care for pets, knows you can't expose an animal to high temperatures for an extended amount of time. They will die and die with much, much suffering. So very sad and easily fixed if MAS cared. read more

i had a dog pit-golden retriever mix he was 3 years old when they took him someone had walked up in our yard and shot kodie he got hit in his leg he suffered from a broken leg due to the shot wound. He was in Memphis animal service from September 16 or 17th all way until September 27 he was put down due to aggression. They said he was treated for his wounds at the animal emergency center on summer avenue, they said during his time there he have not showed no aggression. He was in pain but no aggression Memphis animal service is not the service that you would want to take your dog or were you want to drop a dog off and/or surrender a dog they put dogs down due to the fact of them saying they have no room or the dog is aggressive. The last time I seen my dog alive was July 16 in the morning I was gone to a military school from July 16 to December 17 of 2022 I've been looking for Cody from December 17 to January 17 of 2023 I found him but not alive. They put him down September 27, 2022 due to aggression. ive called around and asked about him and from what I heard He was the sweetest little thing and all he wanted was love and was him he was in pain , and now he's gone forever. Thanks to memphis animal service and a coworker by the name of Miss golf. She told us she was a Memphis animal service coworker to call Memphis animal service I get with the info that I needed and they told me they didn't have no one by the name of miss golf that work there. This is just the beginning of my journey to figure out who is Ms. golf why did she take? My dog is my other dogs alive? We tried getting a few dogs here and it just didn't happen. Each time something came up. The first dog we wanted was heartworm positive on the paperwork but not in the computer. They told us they would test him again the next day and spay him. They didn't. They told us they still hadn't tested him and still weren't sure if he was a candidate for surgery to be fixed. You'd think they'd put priority on a dog they know someone wants to adopt but apparently not. Another shelter told me the test doesn't even take a minute but they do need a lab tech to do it. Anyway, this place also never told us we could go ahead and adopt him and get him fixed ourselves. By the time we learned that someone else had already adopted him. The people here are friendly but this place is crazy unorganized. While there I saw dogs with the same ID number, paperwork saying one thing and the system saying another, and a general lack of organization. I get that a lot of dogs come through but I wish they would get it together. read more

No animal shelter is going to be perfect. After all, they're housing literally hundreds of animals. It's a big job, but all the staff I've met at MAS have been friendly and helpful. Their costs are low and they provide great care for the pets being adopted out. They spay/neuter, give shots, microchip, provide heartworm treatment, etc. Their in-house vets are caring and competent. We have adopted both a dog and a cat and visited numerous times. The CLEANEST pet and animal facility I have ever seen in my entire life (53 years old). I never smelled any odors. We visited the shelter the day before Thanksgiving, thinking it might be slow. The animals were all so well cared for, the animal pens were immaculately clean, not even a splash on the side of the pens, absolutely no odors at all, and the staff was absolutely professional, compassionate, and attentive during our visit. All of the animals were bathed and had medical care or were being treated for medical issues. Many were in recovery stage or severely abused. These were getting lots of medical care. Way too many were wonderful pets someone just left somewhere. I got a chance to meet Dr. Wall, and she chatted with us a few moments. She was wonderfully compassionate. She gave my son and I little personal tour and showed us how hard her support crew works to keep the facility in top shape. She is normally super busy, and I am sure we would not be able to get that much attention, but gosh, that was really nice of her to show us around for a few minuets. We were visiting family from out of state. The office people were very kind, thoughtful, attentive, and compassionate. If Memphis would do it, I would rather take my pet here for kennel service than the one I had to use. They have better facilities than my vet office does. Please, give these guys a good report - they work really hard to take care of the animals. They work really hard finding them homes and providing desperate medial attention. Thank you MAS! read more

We had such a great experience finding our new family member, Rosie. Tommie was so patient with us and took time to show us all of the dogs and lug us interact with Rosie outside. He was so sweet to all the pups and you can tell he loves his job. Gerianne helped us with finalizing the adoption and although wearing a mask never stopped smiling. The appointment process and covid prevention kept us feeling safe. I can't express how thankful we are for MAS keeping these babies safe and providing an excellent experience for potential adopters. read more

The dog area will absolutely break your heart. It's just so hard to see so many pups crying and wanting love. I had to leave the dog area because it was just too hard on my heart. I have adopted two kittens from here. The first kitten never had a rabies shot and I had no idea until I adopted my second kitten. They gave me a voucher for the second kitten to get a rabies shot, so that led me to inquire about my first kitten. I am glad I asked or I would not have known to tell the vet to give her a rabies shot. I assumed they gave her all of that at Memphis Animal Services since it was listed as included in the price. She wasn't old enough to get a rabies shot when I adopted her, but I had no idea. They never told me. So, if you go here ask questions about everything you might wonder concerning future medical care. read more

They don't care... we were rescuing a pit baby from them and the day we went to pick her up she had been put down because one of the staff members got their information mixed up and told us the wrong pick up day and all they had to say is o sorry and then wanted to charge us full price for another baby and not honor the precious price of the adoption event because the even was over.. so u put my dog down and now choose to say I have to pay more for another dog.. this place is a joke I only go there because they are the biggest kill shelter and these animals don't deserve that... read more

Came here on a Saturday morning. The place was very crowded, but the staff had time to talk to me and allow me to look at the cats. I picked out 2 sisters (kittens), and filled out the paperwork. On Tuesday they called and stated the cats had been spayed, and my application approved! I picked them up on Wednesday - they had all shots, were spayed, and all the vet paperwork (history) was given to me. I had to sign a form saying that i would take them to my vet within 7 days, to ensure there were no difficulties. He said they are in great shape. The cats were a bit feral at first, but have now settled in and we love them! The people who work here are SO nice! They all were so happy to see the kitties go to a loving home, and thanked us over and over. (especially for taking 2). I had a wonderful experience here, and would highly recommend people to adopt from here! read more

The place was really nice. The dark skinned African American front desk lady has a slight attitude sometimes but other than that the service was delightful. I am 18. Recently, we had to give away my little sister's cat because of her going to college and I wasn't there when she dropped him off. I had never been to the place before and was nervous that they would treat him badly. But once I finally got a chance to stop by, I felt more comfortable about her leaving him there. Of course he had been adopted fast (within a few days of being there) being the best pet in the history of the world. The place is clean and the pets are very well kept and groomed. They seem to enjoy it there. Of course they still would like a home. If you're looking for a fury friend to join your family, you should really consider this shelter. read more
