Memorial Tattoo - New tat by Phil! - Tattoo Near Me - Atlanta, Georgia

I saw the owner of Memorial, Phil Colvin, for my fine line/color/floral/watercolor tattoo. I was assured that Phil (w/ 35 years of experience as a tattoo artist) had the abilities & experience to handle this particular style. I provided Phil with a design in the initial consult and a (slightly edited, but essentially the same), design via email a week before the tattoo date. I also brought the image to the actual tattoo appt. Phil is a very nice guy, and owns a clean and professional establishment. He clearly has many years of experience as an artist. While I receive many compliments on the end result, I felt very frustrated during the process with the following: 1.) He added black outlines to a tattoo with very little black outlining (design had it only around the daisy). I found this out the hard way, as I had my eyes closed at the start to manage pain & was trying hard not to move. I didn't realize he had done it until I asked "What are you working on right now? I'm trying so hard to be still for you, that I'm having to keep my eyes shut." I have read much online about the topic of black outlining, and the responses are a mixed bag. 2.) His colors (the shade of green on the leaves, etc.) often did not match the original 3.) He did not choose-- or was not able-- to include the level of detail that the original design represented 4.) He made some other minor artistic decisions that were different than the original (ie: the shading on the daisy). 5.) A couple (not all) of the watercolor marks on original design did not turn out well, and I had to return 2 weeks later to get them covered up with leaves. I spent another $200 going back to Phil to get the small corrections made. In general, if any tattoo artist feels they cannot or do not want to accurately transfer design --- body (or feels that a specific element will not transfer as well), they should COMMUNICATE that to the customer. Something to the effect of, "I see that the design you provided doesn't have much black outlining. I think that black outlining is important because of ______ reason. Therefore, I am going to recommend that we do_______." Two-way communication is critical to the process of getting something permanently inked onto your body. He also was dismissive of the tattoo artist that I hired independently to do the design (a Germany based woman who does freelance design work, through fiverr.com). He said, "She just probably grabbed these photos of flowers off the internet; she's clearly not a tattoo artist." Which couldn't have been further from the truth! read more

Their professionalism is outstanding and they are so clean! when you are walking into the tattoo shop, you are always greeted right away. Everyone there is super nice, and it does not feel intimidating at all. I have seen Sayana for several tattoos now and she's an incredible artist as well as being easy to communicate with. Update: My "tattoo" has healed perfectly, but the skin around it has not.. I came into the shop last month to get a tattoo to cover my dermatologist scar that was left on my stomach as seen in the picture, ALEX did a wonderful job on the tattoo and you couldn't see the scar anymore. after the tattoo was done he put this plastic wrap over it and told me to not remove it until 3-5 days. Never have i ever been informed these instructions because usually i'm told to remove the wrap to let the tattoo breath, but since he was the artist i decided to leave it on for 3 days. everyone around me kept telling me to take the plastic off because "those instructions" didn't sound right and (blood & ink) was filing up the plastic area around my tattoo, but i decided to ignore them which was a mistake. fast forward to 3 days later when i removed the plastic the tattoo was fine and it was healing good as i was cleaning it correctly. 2-3 days afterwards i started to feel a burning & itching sensation around my tattoo then i started seeing red scars around it. at first i thought it was the soap i was using or my eczema acting up but i was actually incorrect. i started seeing the red scar turn into brown marks and i knew that wasn't normal so i reached out to the tattoo artist alex, and i didn't get much of a response so when i went into the shop to visit him he told me "i may have took the wrap off wrong :| " then he took full accountability because as you can see in the pictures ( THE SCAR IS LITERALLY THE FUCKING SIZE AS THE PLASTIC WRAP HE PUT ON ME ) so he said to keep applying my eczema cream (which i started using 3x daily) and to keep him updated. so a few weeks later i kept applying the cream and i seen NOO results and i got convinced it was a scar because i had to keep applying lightening cream to my skin regularly !! I was so disappointed and hurt by this artist because I feel like he didn't care.. i literally got this tattoo to COVER A SCAR & I LEFT WITH A SCAR !!! A month after getting the tattoo and the scar is still here, i've been so embarrassed to show my tattoo because it looked hideous after all this !! it looked worse then the scar i was covering up, i have to walk around with a box tattoo. MEANWHILE, alex haven't been much of a help during the whole process!! i wish i could get a refund because this tattoo literally ruined my skin over something that wasn't my fault. i've been spending money after money to fix my skin around it. Our tattoo artist was great! However, they almost lost our business because the guy that greeted us was unwelcoming and bitter! 1. He told me the artist couldn't do what I wanted- lies he did a fabulous job. 2. I asked if they had examples of infinity loops and he said: we don't have examples just laying around. 3. It's kind of a funny thing, writing a Yelp review for a tattoo shop, but this place deserves it. I've worked with Malia now on two pieces: one a gorgeous original on the outside of my arm, and the other her repairing and rejuvenating a piece on the inside of the same arm. I've gone to quite a few different artists for work, and Malia is BY FAR the best. Not only is her work incredible (fantastic lines, awesome saturation, and gorgeous drawings), she's super nice and funny and tries to keep you distracted during the appointment. She's fast and you can tell she loves what she does. The shop staff is great too. Every time I've been in there they've been friendly and chill, and the atmosphere is really welcoming (unlike some other places, where as soon as you walk in the door they're blaring death metal and treat you like you're bothering them). Yes, they may have a long wait time, but this is something that's going to be on your body for the rest of your life! Can't recommend Memorial and Malia enough. read more

Wanting to take the plunge and get a tattoo is a pretty big deal. Well, assuming you don't want a run-of-the-mill tattoo that everyone and their mother has. With ideas and sketches on multiple sheets of paper, I was unsure where to go. Research scared me, so finally I went with someone to Memorial Tattoo to watch them work. I immediately loved the atmosphere of this location. An older home turned haven for skin art, friendly artists providing plenty of conversation, and no sales pitch or forced work. In fact, while there another customer came in for the third time. Apparently he'd chickened out twice before, and while he chickened out again, the artist he was working with never once scolded him or made him feel awful for being unsure. A tattoo is a pretty big deal and a lifetime commitment, so I was glad to see the entire staff being open and honest about the entire ordeal. I met with Malia, a newcomer to the shop at the time. Her work was beautiful, and she spent a while talking to me about the process, size, position, and even took all my sketches to create the tattoo I wound up with. She's very skilled, not heavy-handed at all, and praised me for spending 4 hours under the needle (I figured why not complete the whole thing in one go?). Other artists would wander in as she worked, chatting with me about my career, life, and travels. You really feel like one of the family here! In the end, I wound up with a beautiful tattoo that I love, and the compliments I've gotten around the world have been glowing. When people stop you in a conservative town to tell you they love your tattoo, you know it was well done, quality work! Besides making great art, the entire place is clean and before starting, I was shown a new needle being opened and all fresh inks set up on the table. There's nothing sketch about this place aside from all the drawings going on! I scoured through lots of local artists' portfolios and chose Malia because of her beautiful work with nature scenes, faces, and bright colors. My rating for the place overall, 4/5 but my guy Jet deserves 5/5 for sure! The people up front are not unfriendly, just...surly. My husband and I went in together and it's his first tattoo. I had emailed and spoken with the shop all week before choosing them and I ultimately went with them due to the high reviews and they took walk ins. After waiting for my artist to finish the stencil I asked "who's doing my husbands tattoo?" and he shrugged and said "I dunno" with his head still down. A few minutes later I said "is the guy that's doing mine doing his too?" Silence. Ooookay. Once Jet came our everything was great, he was personable, polite, and calming which is what you need when getting a rib tattoo. Dave Tetter did my husband's tattoo and he was equally nice in a different way, very friendly and almost jovial! Fun to talk to. If you come I recommend coming knowing which artist you want (it should be Jet or Dave!) It's also very affordable, $75! Even though tattoo places were some of the first things I researched when I moved here, it took much longer to get my next tattoo done. These things are expensive, yo! And I knew the next one I wanted was going to be bigger than any before it, so shekels needed to be saved. The reputation of Memorial obviously precedes it, but I also had a friend specifically recommend Malia. Further research indicated that she was the Flower Queen, which fit the bill for my tattoo. Plus, I'd never had a lady tattoo artist before and that seemed wrong to me. So I called to set up an appointment with her, talked about my idea some using words like "Art Nouveau" and we set up a meet. When I arrived for a consultation she already had out a couple of books on Art Nouveau style and design, which let me know she totally understood the look I was going for. I showed her some inspiration art and she took some notes. I like her right off the bat and the studio seemed rad, and I was super excited by every other word out of her mouth because it just confirmed that she totally understood what I wanted and would make it awesome. At the appointment itself she showed me the drawing she had done and it was even more badass than I had imagined. For the next two and a half hours we bro'd out about our home state of California (which included lamenting the lack of awesome burritos here in Atlanta and missing the water.) She checked in with me frequently to make sure I was doing alright (my answer varied at different points) and answered questions about how tattooing works and technique. As much as is possible when a needle is being gauged into and dragged across your flesh for a prolonged period of time, the time really flew by! When it was all over I was totally in love with both my tattoo and Malia. In addition to her line work, her color mixing was spot on and her shading was lovely. A great overall experience with the studio and I'll definitely be getting tattoos 6 and 7 (and possibly beyond...) with Malia! read more

After wasting time, gas, day-time minutes, energy, and waiting two months to hear back from the guy at Prestige Tattoo off Buford Hwy, and getting the same "I left it at home, but I'll email you," response for literally two months, I figured that there's no way in heck that that was remotely normalcy for anyone to have to wait for a sketch. I moved on, bruised but not broken. Somber music enter, curtain closes, chipper music begins. Enter Memorial Tattoo Stage Right. Da ta daaa! Lee was my first introduction to the shoppe and she was so inviting, welcoming, and greeted me with terms of endearment. She sounded like a warm mother, and that's just what I needed to not be scared away from getting a needle drilled into my side. I am a virgin, after all. I head over to Memorial Tattoo, and it's spacious, clean, and I hear the infamous buzzing hum that is indigenous to all ink places. I am engaged by the art, and infected by the need to get tatted before my skin is too wrinkled to be worth it the drama. I looked through all of the portfolios, as per Lee's suggestions, to get some inspiration for the abstract ideas that I already had in mind. I needed something concrete, but wasn't sure how to pictorially depict my idea... Phil and Malia's work grabbed my attention, and I ultimately booked with Malia bc she was available, spoke with me for a mini consult after she'd meticulously tatted and cleaned her studio, and helped me sort out some things. I am eagerly awaiting her sketch. Guess what? She set a date and time (EGAD! NOT TWO MONTHS OUT, Only a few days away!) for me to see the sketch, and I just may end up a tat addict. I fell in love with Sarah B.'s work from Malia, and althoguh Phil has the best faces I've ever seen ANYWHERE up and down the East Coast, I didn't want a face, nor did I want to wait til Oct to see him. So after a long drought of being too cheap and lazy to go get tattooed, I had one of those days where I knew I had to go get something permanently engraved into my, ahem, lower boobie curve region. I had previously accompanied my gentleman-friend, a few months prior, to Memorial on Moreland and observed as Sten tattooed a magnificently detailed and badass chainsaw on said gentleman's forearm. It looked great, and I was impressed. So when I woke up one Sunday thinking that I must get tattooed, it was surprising that we didn't immediately think of Memorial. We visited a few other shops, ones where we knew people, etc., but all were either closed or too busy. Was there no room at the inn for my lower boobie curve region? But then we remembered...Memorial on Moreland! And drove there hence, where, lucky us, Sten was there and free and happy to fit the both of us in. In my left lower boobie curve region, I now have precise, exquisite, fine, and lovely linework reading "lux et voluptas." It is so pretty and so perfect and delicate that every time I see it in the mirror I grin. Sten is amazing. Everyone else there is great, I hear. The shop is cool and relaxed and clean, Prices are reasonable and reflect the quality of the work. I'm sure I'll be tattooed at other shops and by other people at some point, but for now, my first stop in Atlanta is Memorial. No question. read more

I followed Jason Kelly to this tattoo parlor after I kept getting compliments from everyone, including old ladies, on the butterfly tattoo that he did. This is one situation of a tattioist taking a simple concept as a butterfly and making it the most awesome butterfly ever. All I had to do was tell him the size and the colors I wanted and bam! awesome job. Since then, I've also been tattooed by Malia who was just superb. Apparently she does not know how popular she is on the tattoo blogs, everyone knows she is the flower queen. Surprisingly, there was no ego here. She was nice, funny, patient (which is important in their profession) called me to remind me of my appointment, had such a gentle hand and was so courteous. The entire shop is nice. Usually when you go to some of these tattoo shops and you're not the everyday tattooed up the wazoo lady, they tend to give you this look like "Charlotte from Sex and the City just walked in." However, this does not happen at Memorial tattoo. Most times, the tattooist is waiting at the door for me to arrive and greets me with a smile. In the process of shopping around for some new artists to work on me, I was directed to Memorial 2 by fellow Yelper Lee Y. Phil was expecting me and even though he was tattooing, he still took the time to talk to me about my ideas. He was very up front about his schedule, pricing, and a lot of details that some artists don't like to give right away. Generally, he was just a really nice guy. Jason was equally helpful with scheduling me and helping me find the artwork I wanted to show Phil. When I forgot my appointment card at the shop, Jason called to remind me of my times. I thought that was going above and beyond. Most would be like "Oh well, hope she remembers!" I'm scheduled for my first session with Phil in late spring, so expect an update around then. If you want great art, unpretentious artist and honest work then definitely visit Memorial tattoo. I've lived in lots of places and seen and had art work done by many artist. I promise never to see anyone other than Phil Colvin. I am a fan for life. I think It speaks volumes for a person's portfolio when the answer to my question, "who does your work?" was usually, "Phil Colvin". That was my experience after moving to Atlanta. I would see brilliant, original, beautiful pieces all over the city and finally made an appointment to go see him. He was at the original location in Cabbagetown and I've since followed him to the location on Memorial. I've never had anything but a stellar experience each visit. I have been in enough shops where upon entering you are knocked over by the pretentious, holier-than- thou sentiment of the people who work there. That has never been the case at Memorial. Everyone that I've met that works there impresses me. Phil always greets with a smile and is open and honest about any choices I've made. I respect his experience and he respects my time and the fact that I'm a customer in his shop. You don't get that at most shops. I've never seen the placed trashed (as mentioned below) and everyone there is usually too busy working to "horse around". Yeah, you might have to wait. Life is one big effin waiting room. Get over it. Brilliance takes time. If you want factory-like results where people are churned out from assembly line workers, then I suggest you check out another local shop. I had a tattoo that I have wanted to cover up for over 10 years. I hadn't done anything about it because I've seen cover jobs - none of them were good. I figured it would be better to have a tattoo I no longer wanted vs. a really bad cover job. Then, I had the good fortune to befriend someone with a multitude of amazing tattoos. Whenever I pointed to one and asked, "Who did that one?" the answer was, "Phil Colvin." I thought long and hard about what I wanted my cover tattoo to be. I decided on an Asian dragon. Lo and behold, Asian art is one of Phil's specialties (He has many). My husband asked me how I could be so sure that Phil was the right artist for my cover art. I showed him the pictures of Phil's tattoos on his website. 'Nuff said. I still cannot get over the beauty and accuracy of his portraits! I was further reassured when I did my consult with Phil. I just dropped in one day while I was in town. He was finishing up a tattoo and asked me to wait for a few minutes. While waiting, I had time to peruse the shop. I fell in love with the layout. It's a house that has been converted. Each artist has their own room, decorated in their own style. It's clean, artistic and very laid back. Anyway, I showed Phil the tatt that I wanted covered and talked about options for the dragon - size, location, colors, detail, time to complete, number of sessions, pricing, etc. Then I made my appointment ... for 7 weeks out. While that may seem like a long time to way, check out Phil's work. It's worth it! I have had my dragon for 7 days and I love, love, love it!!!! It is so beautiful that I had to ask Phil 3 different times if he really drew it free-hand. Of course, the answer was, "Yes." The best compliment I can give Phil is this .... I showed a close friend of mine the dragon. She asked, "Where was the teddy bear (the old tatt)?" Pretty impressive considering she's seen the old tatt several times, wouldn't you say? While I was there, I also had Phil put a small, tribal frog on the inside of my left wrist. I'm still amazed at how much detail he was able to get in such a small space. Currently getting a half sleeve done by Phil, and all I can say is, PHIL IS THE MAN. He's an expert at his craft, trade and tools. Came in with some swipe/images for the direction I had in mind. Phil got the direction in like .5seconds and improved on it in .6. The piece started off amazing and is currently moving towards a god like aesthetic. Still have 3 more sessions to go, but I'm honestly so content and impressed with the level of service and skill so far that I don't feel the need to wait till it's completed to leave a review. The shops decor is super dope. It's tattoo artwork galore. The walls are covered in all types of tattoo artwork from different genres, which shows the diverse skillset and interest of the shop. In short, Memorial Tattoo rocks. Very professional, personable and they know how to make you comfortable and give you an amazing piece of art. In long, Lee is a total blast and super friendly. We walked in for my appointment and were greeted by her and a big smile. As I introduced myself Phil walked up and introduced himself. I, being a tattoo virgin, was a little on the nervous side (maybe not as much as others but still...) but was totally comfortable once I met the crew. As we waited a couple of minutes for Phil to set up we spoke with Lee who was a lot of fun to speak with and really down to earth. Phil called us back to his room, clean and comfortable and he got to work. Pretty relaxing during the process, Phil is a true professional and really easy to have a conversation with. Both pieces complete and I'm really happy with the work and with Memorial. So happy that I have a few others I'm bringing with me next time to get their work done.
