However, the actual cause of the problem was never clearly identified because most of the visit was spent trying to upsell us on additional services or a new unit. I was repeatedly told that the unit was old, poorly maintained, and that the best option was to replace it. The first repair estimate was around **$6,000** for a compressor replacement. Later, I was offered another option for about **$900** to replace the start capacitor and relay, along with a coil cleaning. We declined both repairs and simply paid **$224** for the service call. Afterward, I drove to Home Depot, bought a replacement start capacitor for about **$20**, and installed it myself in roughly **15 minutes**. The AC unit started working again. Will the unit fail again soon? Probably--it is old. But for now, it works. Could an experienced technician have identified and repaired this particular issue quickly instead of focusing on selling a replacement? In my opinion, yes. When they finally came to repair the broken pipe, they charged us $711. It was 90 degrees and my 88 year old mother is home bound, so we paid.
