The cookies here are fantastic. I found Melly's on yelp and found a few other places (trip advisor, etc) validated that there were worth the stop. On a sunny afternoon I dropped in not expecting too much. I ordered one of their chocolate covered alfajores. I walked out with it in a napkin and proceeded to continue on my walk. I took one bite and thought, "f*ck these are good." I decided it would be what I brought home to my friends in family. On my last day I stopped in and ordered 4 boxes. They were wonderful. They packaged and boxed everything for me. So easy. I would highly recommend making a stop or two (or three) at Melly's. read more

Melly's Stroopwafels failed to deliver my order and refused to issue a refund. When my package ended up in a pickup locker without an access code, I contacted them multiple times -- they ignored every email for weeks. Under EU consumer law, a seller is legally required to ensure proper delivery to the customer. Melly's Stroopwafels not only failed to do so, but also blamed me for the delivery failure, despite knowing the package was still sitting uncollected in the locker. I had to fight for five months through my credit card company to get my money back -- a chargeback they even disputed. Three star coffee, one star cookie. That's the real deal with Melly's Cookie Bar. For a place with "cookie" in the name, I expected a much higher quality cookie. I was disappointed. We stopped in for a quick coffee and treat and were warmly greeted by the woman working the counter. The assortment of baked goods were tempting but since this was a cookie place, we got a traditional chocolate chip to share and a couple of cappuccinos. It's awesome too that Melly's provides FREE TAP WATER for customers. This is something that just isn't done in most of Europe. It's out on the counter with little self-serve glasses so there's no awkwardness of having to ask for it. The coffee was great and as expected, but the cookie was a colossal letdown. Melly's committed the worst sin of all for a bakery: the cookie was stale! Considering that Amsterdam is the home of what I consider THE best cookie in the world, Van Stapele Koekmakerij, it just seems a shame to waste carbs and calories on a place like Melly's. I did like the limited seating here, making it a great place to rest your feet (as long as you come at off times to avoid crowds). I have had an obsession with Stroopwafels since I randomly got on during a plane ride a few years ago, so when I went to Amsterdam I knew I had to have one freshly made. When you're here you get to pick your type of wafel (plain or dipped in dark, milk or white chocolate). Then you get to choose a topping. I got the milk chocolate and small chocolate candies, but they had options like coconut, sprinkles, caramel, etc. There are so many combinations that you can try. However what really won me over was watching them make it fresh in front of my eyes, and being handed a warm fresh wafel. It was so warm and delicious. It took a few minutes, but not very long, and I would say it would be worth the wait! read more

Melly's specializes in alfajores, which are traditional South American sandwich cookies filled with dulce de leche. I'm used to seeing them made with a cornstarch shortbread (alfajores de maicena), but they also had alfajores made with meringue cookies here. The alfajor de maicena that I tried was good: the cookies are fairly bland so you can really taste the generous portion of dulce de leche. They had a case full of other pastries which looked amazing. You can also buy a jar of dulce de leche to take home for around €8! I wanted some coffee to accompany the sweet cookie but unfortunately my espresso was kind of gross and grainy. Maybe I should have gotten a beverage from the attached wine bar instead! For location, Melly's can't be beat. It's right around the corner from Dam Square, so you can escape from the crowds a little bit. Unfortunately there's not a ton of seating inside, but the atmosphere is really cute so you'll want to hang out if you can. Apparently there's free wifi but I didn't bother asking for the password. Not to be a troll, but I honestly don't understand the overly good reviews of this place. I found Melly's cookies to be very bland and sweet, too sweet. It's very conveniently located next to the palace on the Dam square. Inside it's small but cosy. It's pleasantly decorated. I've been here twice and both times I tried a few cookies and cakes and I have to say, I'm a sucker for pastry and cookies but everything pretty much came down to one flavor, or should I say taste: sugar. Pure sweetness, and very little real flavors. The textures of the cookies offer very little to be pleased with when the only taste reaching your receptors is just sweetness emphasized by the lack of flavors. I honestly hope they'll improve their recipes over time. I'll be going back to check it out but not anytime soon. If you like cookies but you don't like excessive sweetness, I recommend you keep looking around. There are tons of alternatives around. read more

Melly's was my favorite place to get a good espresso drink in Amsterdam. It was conveniently located near the Dam Square. The owners were amazing. We can in two mornings in a row and the second morning they remembered our names. They showed us around their kitchen where they bake all of the goodies. They work on a system of trust which I thought was very cool too. If you are having your coffee inside, you don't have to pay until you leave. The lattes were amazing. I just had a latte one day and a mocha latte the other. We also split a muffin and it was to die for. Stop in here! read more

A cookie bar?! Who had this idea? I love it! They put the Argentinian cookies front and center, and I like that because you probably haven't had them. They are a little pricey per cookie in my opinion, but the shop is in prime real estate, so that might have something to do with it. There are more cookies to the left of the main display case. Yes, the cookies are sweet, but I think that's just the kind of cookies they are. They are an Argentinian delicacy, so I can't really say much about it. But those cookies are two "soft" cookies with their caramel in the middle covered in the various kinds of toppings. I thought they were very good and satisfying! I had the lemon meringue one, but it wasn't lemony from what I could taste. And the hot chocolate is REAL hot chocolate, not that Chocomel stuff. I'm sorry, but I don't get why that stuff is everywhere. After reading another review I can add an update; Melly's now accepts credit cards. There's a .50 euro fee to use a card, no minimum required. We had a slice of carrot cake, an Argentinian chocolate cookie and Oreo muffin. All were delicious! Like other places, there's a small fee added for carry out. Huge selection in such a small space. My mouth starts watering when I remember the fantastic coffee and the most amazing almond cookies. This was a yelp find after reading through different reviews on places to eat in Amsterdam. I couldn't ignore all the positive comments, and kept it on my list of things to try and see while wandering through Amsterdam. Thankfully I happened upon Melly's on my last day. My nose found this place before my eyes did. Upon entering you are overwhelmed by the many options to choose from both within the glass case, and don't forget the options in the wood shelves on the left side. This is a very small space and can get very crowded fast as people are ordering and waiting for their coffees to be made. Best chocolate cake and espresso in Amsterdam - hands down. The place has a cozy nice 'my home kitchen' feel to it, the delicious baked goodies are all moderately priced, and the friendly staff makes a HUGE difference. Stepped in for a quick pick me up when the wind picked up. Seems like a really nice place. Warm & cozy, it's a bit tight inside. There's a second room labeled wine cellar that looks like a pizza or cookie kitchen. Not sure what's up with that. They've got a pretty complete coffe menu. My espresso macchiato was totally solid - a bit above average. That earns 4 stars. I also opted for a ham & cheese toastie on a croissant. So tasty! Great espresso here made the correct way. Never had any food although the cookies do look good. I like to stop in for an espresso every now and again though. The inside is very small but there are some seats at the window that face outside so you can watch the swarms of tourists walk by. Don't be fooled by this places location though, it is not a tourist trap, good espresso and not expensive. read more

I love all the cute little cafes scattered all over this city. Nina and I were in the mood for a caffeine pick me up and to get out of the cold for a short while. The inside was relatively small, but there weren't too many people there. I ordered a small latte and their pistachio cannoli. Both were wonderful, but I was enamored with the cannoli. Melly's Cookies... What an interesting combination of Argentinian baked goods, coffee and wine tasting in the basement?!? Let's start simple! Coffee and Sammies: Not much to say here other than nice coffee and the toasties are simple, but quite yummy! Just the right amount of gooey cheese/ham ratio on nicely toasted bread. The perfect picker-uper when you've got the munchies while in the 'hood. So now there is NO EXCUSE for people to eat from the hotdog stands at Dam square since Melly's is just on the other side!! Baked Goods: Some of the reviews say that the sweet breads like carrot cake, banana cake, etc are a bit dry and bland. I actually agree with this! I tried them a couple of times and probably won't get them again. Hooooooowever, what I DO come here for is for the god damn Alfajores! These sweet dulce de leche sammie-cookies are sure to cause some cavities, but when my stomach is pleased, I can't be bothered by such dental details. They make them fresh here AND if you like the D de L, you can buy jars of it here! Wine Tasting: When you walk into Melly's, you would never think there is wine tasting here unless someone told you about it! If you walk to the right of the counter passing the kitchen, you'll see steep suspicious looking spiral stairs heading down to the rustic looking basement. Your initial impression might be whether or not you will be stuck on the head with a golden candlestick by the Butler in the Library... But after being greeted by the friendly Argentina wine connoisseur, the gezelleg-ness of the place will start to settle. This place has a library of imported Argentinian wines, and for a small fee, you can taste four of them while munching on crackers and cheese. What I want to tell the Yelp world is that they have AMAZING white wines. I told the dude that I was not a fan of white wine so with a cocky smirk on his face, he poured my first tasting glass full with white wine. THE BASTARD!, I thought... then I sipped the wine and realized I was the bastard for never having tried this wine before! I feel bad because I can't remember the name of the wine but I think it was torrentes?? Anyway, you can come here as a group and the wine dude will show you a good time! OR, you can come as a couple and he'll sit you on a nice red chair for two and amaze you with some wines. Just a few steps from our apartment, we cannot resist visiting Melly's Cookie Bar, a haven for everything that is sweet. Rather than ordering cookies, we went for the jugular and ordered non-cookie items such as cubanos and chocolate torte. We would have wanted to order more, but this place was quite expensive. Cubanos is just barquillos with dulce de leche filling. I miss barquillos :) Chocolate torte was quite heavy and super charged with chocolate. An Argentinian friend invited me and my partner (who is also Argentinian) along to Melly's to sample the alfajores, Argentina's favourite biscuit. An alfajor is a soft biscuit which conceals a layer of dulce de leche, South America's favourite condensed milk spread. Traditionally they are coated in desiccated coconut or crystallized sugar though a popular contemporary variation is the chocolate covered option. Melly's offers more than the alfajor; there are several delicious looking cookies and cakes available, and jars of homemade dulce de leche. The sitting area is quite sparse, with just two tables available on site, but when we visited it wasn't busy so we easily got a seat. The café enjoys a prime location in a quiet corner behind the main square and close to Amsterdam central station. Overall tasty cookies and nice addition to Amsterdam's café culture. read more
