EDIT: I updated from 1 star to 3 star. When I spoke with a higher level manager I got a better understanding of what happened. Hiding the review because he said they would implement a procedural approach to make sure this doesn't happen to others. He also offered us a free couples massage at another time. It turns out the massage therapists are independent contractors who only see their schedule unless they look at the others. So there wasn't something specific on a general schedule that showed the room was already booked. Meaning it was easy for something like this to happen. They were going to add a step that the massage therapists need to check the upcoming schedule for the couples room before using it. The couple that wound up in there had booked two separate rooms online (because you have to call to book the couples room) then asked to move it to the couples room when they showed up 30 min before we were scheduled. I hope they follow through on their plan to add a process fix. No massages for us! Edit: It gets worse! When they called me to apologize at first the guy was saying it wasn't their fault because the location to a first come first served basis. It absolutely is your fault (as a company if you allow your only couples room to be double booked!) Turns out that a couple booked massaged online for 30min before us. However you can't book the couples room. So when they showed up they asked for the couples room and were given it despite the fact that we had it booked starting at 1pm. Not cool! I literally called instead of booking online since you can't book the couples room online. (Doing the massage another day is easier said than done for a variety of reasons.) Just showed up for our couples massage appointment to find out that the couples room was already being used. I was really looking forward to our day date while kids are out of town so I'm bummed. The woman helping us said she would talk to the manager about waiving our same day cancellation fee since we didn't want to get two separate massages. Yeah, not paying that! She also mentioned that they do double book rooms when I asked what happened. So, this can't be an uncommon event. Amazed by all the great reviews if this is how they do business! Visited Mellow Massage recently and it was a pleasant experience. I will say the location is pretty convenient and there is some parking available. We were a little late for our massage appointments as I accidentally missed a turn and drove to the plaza across the street. I was slightly confused and couldn't find the business initially, so I think more visible signage could help, at least with the PB location. The interior is pretty simple, with a front counter to check in and some seating on the left side. The massage rooms are cozy and on the smaller side but seemed pretty adequate. I booked an 80-minute Swedish Massage and I believe the therapist was Sally. It was a great massage and I requested that she focus on my shoulders and back. The first part of the massage was alright, as I had trouble relaxing and the pressure was a bit much, but the massage improved significantly afterwards. There was an aromatherapy component, and I recall Sally applying a peppermint scented oil. My mom had a massage as well, and thought it was good, but felt it was a bit rushed. This could be due to the fact that we were the last appointments of the night (before a holiday) and since we arrived a little late. Pricing for our massage services were reasonable and you can use a promo for 10% off as a new customer. Just a note that if you're in a room closer to the front entrance, you may hear other customers and folks talking in the lobby, which wasn't super great, but luckily the noise was brief. Mellow Massage Pacific Beach is beautiful to walk into, and the quality of massage therapists is superb. I joined the monthly membership (no required length) because it is a great deal. I used my monthly credits towards a prenatal massage with Kiana that made my body feel incredible for the duration of my pregnancy. I used another credit and my discount towards a couples massage for my husband and I after baby arrived. Jackie did a restorative massage for me with lovely frankincense aromatherapy. She was conscious of my needs, providing a chest pillow to make lying down more while I'm breastfeeding, and focused on trouble areas common in parents caring for a newborn. Chad did a deep tissue massage on my husband and really worked out his knots! I've had a small hiccup with billing a time or two but they always make it right. All of the massage therapists I've worked with have made us feel comfortable, relaxed and helped make improvements to trouble spots on our bodies. read more

This place doesn't deserve the rating it gets. First I did extensive research on their certified masseuses as my partner has scoliosis. We arrived and she explained once again she has scoliosis. The masseuse looked confused and just said ok. They took us back for our massages and when I say this was a rub down not a massage I meant it. She rubbed my shoulders for the entire time and applied no pressure what so evert throughout the massage. My partner received the same type of service just a rub down with heavy oil. We both left extremely disappointed. I immediately went across the street to down to earth thai massage and they did an incredible job making sure they got all our kinks out and were extremely knowledgeable about scoliosis. It made my partner feel at ease that she was in good hands. The owners of mellow spa reached out that night to ask how our experience was. We wrote back that it was a terrible experience and we would never come back. He answered apologized and offered a full refund. Then back tracked every chance he got to not give us refund but wanting us to come back for another session. Which we obviously denied. They ended up only refunding for one massage and said bc we paid Venmo for the other they wouldn't refund it. After a few days of fighting for the entire refund we gave up and only received a rerun for one massage. As we didn't want this to consume our entire trip. I would never recommend this place to anyone. read more

On July 13, 2024, I corresponded with Kelly via email (info@mellow-massage.com), and on behalf of Mellow Massage, she confirmed that my membership had been canceled and that a refund had been processed. She also mentioned that the receipts for the refund had been sent to me. While I did receive refunds for the charges on June 4, 2024, and July 24, 2024, I have recently discovered that I continued to be charged $109 each month from August 2024 through January 2025, totaling $654, despite the previous confirmation that my membership was canceled. As these charges were made in error, I want the total amount of $654 to be credited back to my American Express card. I have made several recent attempts to contact Mellow Massage both by phone and email to resolve this matter directly, but unfortunately, I have received no responses. Don't bother !! Me and my wife received a couples massage yesterday- the worst massage I've ever had . They walked us into the room a little after 1 by the time they walked back in for the massage was about 1:15 and they finished at 1:50 supposed to be a hour massage. Be Aware. I did not realize until now that Mellow Massage has been charging $109 on my credit card each month, the same day since September 2024. And it automatically added me as a member because I'm a recurring visitor (twice). I never signed a contract that I had to pay each month. And the credit card I used to pay in person automatically saved my credit card. When I tried to remove my credit card online it would not let me do so. Super disappointing. I booked a massage ON my actual birthday (today), as a treat to myself at 10am. The receptionist called me about 15 minutes before my scheduled appointment time and said the therapist was running about 15 minutes late bc of car trouble. I went to run an errand and arrived around 10:25am. When I arrived she tells me she won't be able to give the full time of 50 minutes, only 20 minutes, since I was late. Uummmm?? I was called and asked to come late!!! And that was never mentioned when the receptionist called me. She said "yea well I was still in the area and ended up getting here on time". Soooo how was I supposed to know that?! I also had multiple people contact me, including the receptionist when he called to tell me to come late, trying to get me to sign up for their monthly subscription service. I have received two gift cards for Mellow and gotten great massages there! however I am not interested in a membership. Walked in to the pacific beach location in hopes of buying a nice gift card for my mother for Christmas- we waited around 30-35 minutes at the front desk before a worker came out to retrieve another waiting client, he simply looked our way and then walked back without offering us any help or asking what we were in need of. My ex-girlfriend got me a gift card to Mellow Massage for my birthday. She doesn't live in San Diego so I'm not exactly sure how she found Mellow Massage, but I'm happy that she did. This place has a great location. I've never had trouble finding parking (there is a lot, but I park on the street). It's 2 blocks from the beach. You can walk to the beach post massage and enjoy the moment. It's spacious and dimly lit inside. The environment is peaceful, but not faux hippy. More like Lofi peaceful. I'd never had a male Massage Therapist before. I was initially reluctant to go because I only saw male therapists at the time that I wanted. I also requested Deep Tissue and needed someone strong. So I selected Apollo after reading the positive reviews. Excellent decision! Apollo is like a VERY knowledgeable, professional, and a great Therapist. He is attuned to body mechanics. He also gives me great workout tips. Apollo is jacked. He looks like he lives in the gym.. I'm happy that I stepped out of my comfort zone and gave him a shot. I now have a membership. I've left reviews for numerous massage places. I wasn't always thrilled with the service that I received. Apollo at Mellow Massage changed the game for me though. In 2 Deep Tissue/Stretching sessions I can feel my body loosening up and getting back to its old form. At this point it would be difficult for me to find a Massage Therapist with the skill set to match Apollo. I went here to get a massage. The online booking process is easy. Just as other people mentioned, I got a call 2 hours before my appt to join their monthly membership and I declined as I have never been here before. I was about 15 mins early for my appt. Parking is a designated lot out front but is primarily 30 min only so I had to street park as my massage was longer than 30 mins. I walked in and the overall look of the place is beautiful but they do not have a receptionist. I was greeted a few minutes after arriving by another masseuse. She checked me in. Once it was time to be called back, my masseuse seemed frazzled setting things up once we were in the room. The room was nothing special; just a table, small table for your clothes, and some dimmable lights. The massage was less than great. The masseuse did ask me about problem areas but then did not address them in any way during the massage. I felt like I was being beat with her hands but when she was using the hot stones it was comfortable (which is the massage I booked). Pressure was inconsistent. Her nails were also so long that they were constantly digging into me. 24 hrs later, I have more discomfort than when I went in. At the end of the appt, since they have no receptionist, it is awkward to check out because you are tipping the masseuse right in front of them. Price was fair for what I got. I don't think I'll be going back here. Very weird experience; I'd rather pay the extra money to go to my usual spas. read more

Worst massage experience ever. The masseuse was extremely unprofessional and massaged me at inappropriate areas beneath the sheet. At first, I convinced myself that maybe it was a typical procedure at this specific massage parlor and that maybe all clients received the same massage treatment. But after consulting a friend who received a similar massage here, I learned that I was, in fact, groped inappropriately. The entire 60 minutes, I laid there while a revolving door of thoughts played out in my head, rehearsing what I would do if this masseuse took things any further. Afterwards, I tried to leave as quickly as I could so that I could move on and forget about the experience. Before I could leave, the front desk attendant went ahead and scheduled me for a massage with the same masseuse WHILE HE WAS STANDING THERE! Of course I wasn't going to say no and make things awkward, so I called a few weeks later to cancel the appointment discreetly. Now there is a charge on my card for a "no show." I called in and explained the situation and the receptionist said she would try her best to get it refunded. Still no refund and now I'm faced with reliving this experience more than I would like. When we arrived, they told us they had accidentally canceled our appointments. They promised to compensate us and reschedule. We realized we couldn't make the new date, so I called to reschedule for today, May 22. I called to confirm our appointments today and was told there were no appointments scheduled for us. I wanted to communicate with a manager about this privately over email rather than call or leave a review, but management didn't respond. After discussing with other professional massage therapists, I think it's important I say something. I went to the PB location last weekend for a massage with a male therapist. His demeanor with me was professional, but there were a few things about the massage that left me feeling uncomfortable. Let me preface, I came to get a massage without disclosing that I was a massage therapist because I just wanted to relax - I didn't want to make the therapist uncomfortable nor did I want to "talk shop." My friend recommended this place, and I have no problem paying for quality bodywork. First impression was not glowing: the therapist was nearly 10 minutes late walking in the front lobby where I was waiting. We spent maybe a minute discussing where I wanted focus and then he left. The "intake" conversation didn't really address what I had mentioned on the online form, and he didn't ask about medical history or possible contraindications. I undressed quickly but still waited a good 5 minutes as I overheard him talking with someone outside the door. Despite this time spent, he ended before the end of the hour so I received roughly 35 minutes of massage when I paid for 55-60. The massage began and he undraped the sheet so that not just my back but my entire butt was OUT, crack was completely on display. When I went to massage school, we were informed to keep the gluteal cleft covered, and for men to be especially crisp in their draping. This was in 2007 in Arizona - have draping requirements changed? I'm not certain if my lady bits were exposed when he did some leg stretches, and I couldn't discretely open my eyes to see if my boobs were out, but felt a draft there too. Even if he had given me a neck rest or eye pillow to make me more comfortable (which he didn't), I was on edge thinking things were out on display. There were no hot towels used on my feet or back, but I was appreciative of the working hot pad on the table with such a cold and sterile room. I understand the aesthetic, but bodies tend to chill when not in motion. The therapist didn't make me feel uncomfortable at any part during our interaction, but it was jarring and not relaxing for me to be so exposed during the massage. read more

I just had a massage with Heather at the Pacific Beach location and I honestly must say that this was the best massage I have ever received in my life. I've gone to probably 20+ locations in the San Diego area and am a regular when it comes to massages, and Heather was absolutely incredible from start to finish.
