Melbourne Cinematheque is a weekly curated film program that screes at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) on Wednesday nights from 7pm.
Cinematheque's byline sums it up well: "Dedicated to screening rare and significant films from the history of international cinema".
Every Wednesday there is around three or four hours of film screenings (usually comprising two feature films) that run as part of three or four week programs, defined by director, theme, genre, etc.
The Cinematheque curators (including the Creative Director of the Melbourne International Film Festival) go to great pains to source rare and brilliant material, so it's always a valuable educational experience, even if the occasional selection slips over the line from austere to boring.
The full yearly membership fee is $110 (which is a steal at around $1.50 per film if you managed to see them all). read more
